Since the 0 season, Hopkins is 8-2 in those games, all of which came in the Blue Jay invitational, scheduled for Jan.3-4, 6. Opening act: For 16 of the last 17 seasons, Hopkins has opened its regular season on the floor of Goldfarb Gym, compiling a 14-2 record, including wins in each of the last three season openers. Masters of their domain: From the through the 4-05 season, Hopkins has racked up a record in Goldfarb Gym, the second-most home wins among Centennial Conference teams. In Bill Nelson s 19 seasons, Hopkins is on the Goldfarb floor. Tourney time: Tournament games have been a time to shine for Danny Nawrocki and Bobby Sharafeddin. Nawrocki has three career all-tournament nods, including twice last season (Blue Jay Invitational, Cal Tech Holiday Festival). In the Blue Jay Invitational, Nawrocki compiled 41 points in two games. During the 3-04 season, Nawrocki was placed on the Lopata Classic All-Tournament team. Sharafeddin earned his first career all-tournament selection last season in the Blue Jay Invitational, highlighted by a career-high 16 points on Nov. 20 against Keystone. Long time, no see: With their season opener set against Salisbury in the Pride of Maryland Tournament, the Blue Jays and Sea Gulls will face off for the first time since Jan. 10, In the last meeting, Hopkins earned a victory at Goldfarb Gym. The all-time series is tied at one. Scouting the Sea Gulls: For the first time since 0-01, Salisbury recorded 10 or more wins, finishing overall in The Sea Gulls have suffered four consecutive losing seasons, including 20 losses in Since the 0-01 season, Salisbury is 6-4 in season-opening tournament games, including a championship in the McDaniel Tournament Nov , earning wins over Chestnut Hill (70-64) and McDaniel (70-57). Leading Salisbury into the new season is junior guard Segun Odumeru, a Second Team All-CAC pick last season. Odumeru produced 15.8 points per game, averaging nearly 30 minutes per game. Scouting the Green Terror: With first-year head coach Bob Flynn at the helm, McDaniel looks to rebound from a 5-20 season in However, the Green Terror will have to do so without the services of their two leading scorers from last season, Kyle O Connor (13.6 ppg) and Sam Amstead (11.2 ppg), who were lost to graduation. Shouldering the load will be senior point guard Mike Dipiero, who scored 7.6 per game, averaging 28.6 minutes. McDaniel will also rely on its inside game, anchored by junior center Jemar Daniel, who averaged 7.1 points and 4.7 rebounds last season.

McDaniel extended the lead to early in the second half, but the Blue Jays countered with nine unanswered points to grab a advantage, one that they wouldn t relinquish. Eric Toback led the way for Hopkins, accruing a game-high 23 points, including 5-for-8 shooting from three point range. Jeff Thompson handed out eight assists and T.J. Valerio was 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Kyle O Connor and Chris Rutland both scored in double figures for McDaniel, with 15 and 13 points, respectively. Scouting the Bobcats: Looking for its third straight winning season, Frostburg State enters the 5-06 season with only two of its starting five from last season returning. Picked to finish fifth in the AMCC Preseason Poll, Frostburg will rely on senior forward and second team all-conference performer Dan Ryley to provide the spark this season. Ryley got into double figures 17 times last season, eclipsing 20 points four times. Senior point guard Victor Arana, who posted 8.0 points and 2.9 assists per game will also be leaned on this season. Last meeting: Danny Nawrocki s basket with 2:19 remaining in overtime gave Johns Hopkins an advantage and capped off a 25-point, 12-rebound performance in the Blue Jays overtime win over Frostburg State in the first game of the Blue Jay Invitational on Nov. 19, 4. With Hopkins clinging to a lead, a turnover late by the Blue Jays gave Frostburg a chance to tie the score and Jamal Peterson capitalized with a buzzer-beating runner. Hopkins erased a halftime deficit with a 10-2 second half run. Daniel Ryley was one of three Bobcats in double figures, scoring 16 to lead the way. Down the road: Fans can expect to see changes in the Pride of Maryland Tournament in With nine D- III teams in the state, one of these teams will not return next season, making way for St.Mary s, who will not participate in the inaugural weekend. Other changes include the tournament dates, which will be changed to the week of Thanksgiving. Each team will play a mid-week first round date, before all eight teams come together for the semifinals and finals on Saturday and Sunday. Return of the Postseasons The Blue Jays are seeking their first postseason appearance since a trip to the ECAC South Tournament in 3-04, where they fell to Albright. Hopkins last trip to the Big Dance was during the season, where they were ousted by Centennial Conference foe F&M, During Bill Nelson s tenure, Hopkins has qualified for seven NCAA Tournaments and three ECAC Tournaments. Snapping the streak: Heading into the 5-06 season, Hopkins will have the task of breaking a four-game losing streak. The slide began on Feb. 16, when Gettysburg dropped the Blue Jays at Goldfarb Gym, Hopkins slipped in its next three on the road, falling at Centennial Tournament Champion Ursinus (80-77, ot), Centennial Regular Season Champion Franklin & Marshall (74-70) and Haverford in the Centennial Tournament Opening Round (73-51). In those three regular season losses, the Blue Jays fell by a combined 10 points to three teams that qualified for postseason play (Ursinus NCAA; Gettysburg, F&M ECAC). Close calls: The hallmark of the 4-05 season was the numerous close games. Five points or less decided 15 of Hopkins 25 contests, with the Blue Jays winning only seven. Exhibition Game: Four Loyola players scored in double figures and Johns Hopkins made only 55.6% of its free throws, as the Greyhounds took down the Blue Jays, 91-73, in an exhibition game at Reitz Arena Nov. 10. After seeing Loyola grab a lead at the half, Hopkins answered early in the second, trimming the margin to at the 17:55 mark. However, the Greyhounds were able to rattle off seven unanswered, opening up a lead with just over 15 minutes remaining. T.J. Valerio led all scorers, racking up 23 points for the evening. Valerio played 24 minutes, making 7-of-12 field goal attempts, including 5-of-5 from behind the three-point arc. Bobby Sharafeddin also got into double figures for the Blue Jays, registering 14 points on

Senior guard Andre Collins, a Maryland transfer, led Loyola with 22 points. 300 and counting Head coach Bill Nelson is entering his 20th season at Hopkins, sporting a (.625) record. Nelson earned his 300th win in a win at Cal Tech on Dec. 31, 4. Under his guidance, Hopkins has compiled 10 consecutive winning seasons, including five 20 win campaigns and six NCAA Tournament appearances. Nelson has logged 25 career seasons, including two at Rochester Institute of Technology and four at Nazareth, giving him a career record. Sideline staples: In a revolving-door world of assistant coaches, Bob McCone and Ed Richardson will patrol the Hopkins sideline once again. McCone signed on with the Blue Jays in the season, the first time a Nelson-guided team qualified for the NCAA Tournament. Richardson has been alongside Nelson for 310 Hopkins wins, entering his 20th season with the Blue Jays program. Joining McCone and Richardson this season is former Blue Jay guard Danny Burruss, who appeared in 61 games for Hopkins from Making His Mark: After two complete seasons, Danny Nawrocki s name appears in the Hopkins record book, as a career scoring average of 12.7 places him 11th all-time. Nawrocki also has an opportunity to finish his career among the leaders in field goal percentage, as he s made 60.9 of his attempts in two seasons. Dan Jackson ( ) heads up the all-time list with a 60.9 career percentage. Inside contribution: In 4-05, Matt Griffin s success provided a significant boost for the Blue Jays in the win column. Griffin got in double-figures in points eight times; in those games, Hopkins posted a 7-1 record. However, Griffin only led the team in scoring three times all season, including a career-high 22 points against Dickinson on Jan. 22. Charity stripe success: At the foul line, the Blue Jays can count on Zack Armen and T.J. Valerio to cash in. Armen had only 21 attempts in 4-05, but converted on 85.7 percent of his tries (18-21). Most of his attempts came in Centennial Conference games, where he made 14-of-16, tried (87.5%). Valerio was 23-of-31, converting 74.2 percent of the time. In Centennial games, Valerio hit on 82.4 percent of his opportunities (14-17). Lock-down defense: Last season, Hopkins held its opponents to 40.2 percent shooting from the field, while the Blue Jays enjoyed 46.7 percent shooting. Behind the arc, Hopkins has been even tougher to score on, as opponents only hit on 25.9 percent of their chances last season, leading the Centennial Conference in both categories. Hopkins held its opponents to fewer than 60 points seven times in Nationally, the Blue Jays ranked 40th in Division III scoring defense (64.2 ppg), 43rd in field goal percentage defense, Bombs away: Three of the top seven returning three-point shooters in the Centennial Conference last season suit up in Columbia Blue and Black. All three players made 30 or more tries, led by T.J. Valerio, who hit on 37-of-89 attempts (41.6%). Terence Coppola connected 35-of-85 times (41.2%), while Bobby Sharafeddin nailed 31-of-78 treys (39.7%). As a team, the Blue Jays converted on 38.7 percent of three-point tries, tops in the conference and 34th in Division III. Seasoned juniors: Coming into the 5-06 season, the junior class and its six members (Armen, Griffin, Morley, Nawrocki, Valerio, Ward) have collected the most minutes along with the most points and rebounds of any of the three returning classes of players. The juniors have made a combined 67 starts, as opposed to the sophomores 27 and the 25 for the seniors. On the scoresheet, the third-year players have been the most dominant, collecting 1,347 points, while the sophomores and seniors have combined for 577 points. Finally, the juniors have cleaned the glass, collecting 790 boards, while the sophomores and seniors have 303 total rebounds.
