Hopkins returns for only its second home game of the season, as the Blue Jays have played four of the last five away from the confines of Goldfarb Gym, posting a 2-2 record. Since the season, Hopkins owns a 6-1 record against the Mules, including six in a row. Saturday s contest also marks Coaches vs. Cancer day, as donations for the foundation will be collected on both ends of the doubleheader, beginning with the women s game at 2 p.m. The mascot of NCAA Basketball, J.J. After Swarthmore forced a tie with 10 minutes remaining in the half, Hopkins pulled ahead to stay, cementing the lead with a scoring stretch between the 4:26 mark of the first half and the 12:14 point of the second. Danny Nawrocki (Syosset, NY/Chaminade) knocked down a pair of free throws with 3:21 remaining in the game to give Hopkins its first 19-point cushion, at Nawrocki and T.J. Valerio (Blue Bell, PA/St. Joseph s Prep) were the only Hopkins scorers to reach double figures with 17 and 10, respectively. Both players tied a team-high with six rebounds. Leading the Garnet Tide was sophomore Steve Wolf, who posted a 25-point night, good for a career-high. Wolf was 8-of-17 from the floor and 8-of-9 at the free throw line. Scouting the Mules Muhlenberg dropped its Centennial Conference opener, falling at Haverford on Nov. 29. With the loss, Muhlenberg s attempt at a 4-0 record for the first time in nine seasons was put to rest. The Mules held a advantage with 67 seconds remaining in the second half, but Haverford s Johnny Elefterakis knocked down a pair of treys, including a 25-footer with 3.9 seconds remaining to send Muhlenberg to its first loss. Prior to that game, Muhlenberg had won its previous three games by an average of 15.3 points. Leading the way individually is junior center Jeff Stewart, who averages 15.3 points and 9.0 rebounds per contest. Last meeting Terence Coppola nailed a runner in the lane with seven seconds remaining to lift Johns Hopkins to a win over visiting Muhlenberg on Jan 29, Muhlenberg had turned a deficit into a lead as a basket by Jimmy O Brien and two free throws by Jeff Stewart gave the Mules some breathing room in the final minutes. However, T.J. Valerio hit a three pointer just 12 seconds after Stewart s free throws and Coppola s game-winner came shortly after. The contest saw six lead changes and two ties in the first half alone. Eric Toback led the Blue Jays with 19 points, while Valerio turned in an 11-point effort. Stewart posted 17 points and 12 rebounds for Muhlenberg. November reign Since Bill Nelson began at Hopkins in the season, the Blue Jays have racked up a record in November games, compiling a winning percentage of and counting Head coach Bill Nelson is entering his 20th season at Hopkins, sporting a (.625) record. Nelson earned his 300th win in a win at Cal Tech on Dec. 31, Under his guidance, Hopkins has compiled 10 consecutive winning seasons, including five 20 win campaigns and six NCAA Tournament appearances. Nelson has logged 25 career seasons, including two at Rochester Institute of Technology and four at Nazareth, giving him a career record. 500 times The Nov. 26 game at Furman marked the 500th time that the Blue Jays have taken the court with head coach Bill Nelson at the helm. Since 1919, Hopkins has played in 1,623 games. Nelson s tenure with the Blue Jays has spanned over 30 percent of the games that the program has played since its inception. Sideline staples In a revolving-door world of assistant coaches, Bob McCone and Ed Richardson will patrol the Hopkins sideline once again. McCone signed on with the Blue Jays in the

In Bill Nelson s 19 seasons, Hopkins is on the Goldfarb floor. Making his mark After two complete seasons, Danny Nawrocki s name appears in the Hopkins record book, as a career scoring average of 12.7 places him 11th all-time. Nawrocki also has an opportunity to finish his career among the leaders in field goal percentage, as he s made 60.9 of his attempts in two seasons. Dan Jackson ( ) heads up the all-time list with a 60.9 career percentage. Lock-down defense Last season, Hopkins held its opponents to 40.2 percent shooting from the field, while the Blue Jays enjoyed 46.7 percent shooting. Behind the arc, Hopkins has been even tougher to score on, as opponents only hit on 25.9 percent of their chances last season, leading the Centennial Conference in both categories. Hopkins held its opponents to fewer than 60 points seven times in Nationally, the Blue Jays ranked 40th in Division III scoring defense (64.2 ppg), 43rd in field goal percentage defense, Seasoned juniors Coming into the season, the junior class and its six members (Armen, Griffin, Morley, Nawrocki, Valerio, Ward) have collected the most minutes along with the most points and rebounds of any of the three returning classes of players. The juniors have made a combined 67 starts, as opposed to the sophomores 27 and the 25 for the seniors. On the scoresheet, the third-year players have been the most dominant, collecting 1,347 points, while the sophomores and seniors have combined for 577 points. The juniors have also cleaned the glass, collecting 790 boards, while the sophomores and seniors have 303 total rebounds. Minimizing the losses Hopkins only loses one player from its starting lineup in : Eric Toback. A First Team All-Centennial Pick last season, Toback was the team s leading scorer with 14.5 points per game. Toback was the game-high scorer for Hopkins nine times, including four games with 20 or more points. Toback closed out his career 12th on the Hopkins career scoring list with 967 points. Inside contribution In , Matt Griffin s success provided a significant boost for the Blue Jays in the win column. Griffin got in double-figures in points eight times; in those games, Hopkins posted a 7-1 record. However, Griffin only led the team in scoring three times all season, including a career-high 22 points against Dickinson on Jan. 22. All-tournament A pair of Blue Jays got Pride of Maryland All-Tournament nods, as Matt Griffin and T.J. Valerio led Hopkins to a 2-1 record during the tournament. Valerio scored 51 points during the three-game stretch, while Griffin averaged 16 points per game, shooting 69.2 percent from the field. For both Griffin and Valerio, this was their first career all-tournament nod. Charity stripe success After hitting on only 61.6 percent of their tries from the line in , the Blue Jays connected on 76.2 (16-22) percent of their attempts in the season opener against Salisbury and 77.3 percent of their tries (17-22) against Villa Julie. Highlighting the first game at the line was T.J. Valerio, who went 7-of-8 and Danny Nawrocki, who knocked down 7-of-10 tries. Nawrocki was only 45.5 percent from the line last season. Against Villa Julie, Matt Griffin was 9-of-11. Continuing the trend, Hopkins made 71.4 percent of its free throw attempts against D-I Furman, including 4-of-4 in the first half. Overtime struggles Hopkins loss at Villa Julie in the Pride of Maryland Tournament was their fourth overtime loss in five tries since the season. The Blue Jays picked up their only overtime win this decade last season in an win over Frostburg State on 11/19.
