1 Blue Jays In The Spotlight A Glimpse At The Achievements Of Some Current and Former JHU Basketball Players... Amanda Leese ( 06) Amanda missed several games last season to study in Bosnia, and her sacrifice paid off. She recently presented at a closed conference of ambassadors and representatives from the international police force and defense intelligence agency. The event, titled Brcko: Durable Model for Peace was a two-day panel presentation on the merits of unique models for reconstruction that have met particular success in Brcko, Bosnia, and their potential applicability to localities throughout the former Yugoslavia. Amanda spoke on the research she conducted last spring. Alissa Burkholder ( 05) Ashanna Randall ( 05) Last spring, Alissa and Ashanna designed and built a system that uses sound emitters to enable blind people to play basketball. A large piezoelectric sound emitter powered by a 9-volt battery and mounted behind the backboard sends out low pulse tones to help players locate their shooting target. A smaller sound emitter embedded in the basketball sends out a higher continuous tone to tell players where the ball is. The project was completed for an engineering design class in their final year at Hopkins. Alissa is now in graduate school at Stanford. Amanda Leese (third from right) with current and former Deputy High Representatives in Bosnia, a representative of the United State s largest investor in Bosnia, and the chief police officer who integrated Bosnia s only police force. in Rio de Janeiro, where placing first would earn Team USA a trip to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Kathy also designed the team logo and the official web site, Erin Perry ( 01) Erin graduated from Jefferson Medical College in 2005 and is currently in Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at Stony Brook University Hospital in Stony Brook, Long Island. She is married to Cary Moyer and has two step children, Drew (11 years) and Brett (six years). The couple is expecting its first child together in November. Julie Anderson ( 98) Julie lives in the San Franciso Bay area and is a pediatric nurse practitioner at the Stanford Children s Hospital. Sylke Knuppel ( 92) Sylke was inducted into the Howard County Hall of Fame last summer. She played for Glenelg High School before coming to Johns Hopkins, where she still ranks fifth all-time in points scored (1,305). Before graduating from Hopkins, Alissa Burkholder (middle) and Ashanna Randall (right) designed a system to enable blind people to play basketball. Kathy Darling ( 03) Kathy has been playing team handball for the USA Women s National Team since May She scored seven goals in five games for her team at the Pan-American Championships in Brazil, and is now preparing for the USA Cup next June and a European tour in July. The team will compete at the Pan- American Championships for a World Championships qualification and then at the Pan-Am Games Heidi Sumser ( 02) Heidi continues to work in fundraising at the Pan American Health and Education Foundation in Washington DC. She is applying to graduate school for the fall of 2006, and she recently ran the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington DC on October 30. Heidi trained with the AIDS Marathon Team in Training for six months before the race. Cindy Harper Covington ( 88) Cindy and her family recently moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where she is a stay-at-home mom with four kids (the boys are nine and four, and the twin girls are two). Cindy hopes to get back into the writing world soon. Shyamali Mallick ( 88) This past August, Shyamai finished her residency and fellowship in Surgical Oncology at City of Hope in Los Angeles, California. Shyamai began a new job in November in private practice, and she is also the medical director of the cancer center in a community hospital about 10 miles south of Stanford. Shyamali lives in Saratoga, California, with her husband Dave and their 18-month-old (as of December) daughter Janhavi. Her husband works for Cisco in Silicon Valley Women s Basketball 13

2 Opponent Information 2005 Blue Jay Invitational November 19-20, 2005 Goldfarb Gymnasium The Blue Jay Invitational is traditionally the kickoff tournament for both the Johns Hopkins women s and men s teams, but this year the men s tournament will be held separately in January. This season s tournament is the 14th for the women since 1990 and the 15th annual for the men, who have hosted it every year since Last year the women defeated Emory and DeSales to win their ninth Blue Jay Invitational Championship, which included their 15th-straight season-opening win. The Johns Hopkins women have advanced to the championship game every year with their only losses coming to Holy Family (1990), John Carroll (1992), St. Thomas (2000) and The College of New Jersey (2002). The Hopkins women have produced nine Blue Jay Invitational MVPs including Ashanna Randall ( 05) in 2004 and current junior Julie Miller in Karen Hoffman (1993, 1994) and Julie Anderson (1995, 1996) are the only two-time MVPs in tournament history. 6 2004 Season Review The Tradition Continues Johns Hopkins finishes the season with a 21-5 record and in second place in the Centennial standings M ake it nine. The Johns Hopkins women s basketball team finished with at least 20 wins for the ninth time in head coach Nancy Funk s tenure, including the last three years and nine of the last 11. Since Funk s first 20-win season in , the Blue Jays have been conference championship contenders each year, and this one was no different. The Hopkins women finished 21-5 overall and 16-2 in the Centennial Conference, winning its last eight conference games before falling to perennial rival McDaniel in the Centennial tournament semifinals. The Blue Jays and Green Terror not only split wins during the regular season, but also in every year since After defeating Johns Hopkins in Baltimore in the semifinals, McDaniel defeated Dickinson in the conference championship game and advanced to the second round of the NCAAs, where it lost to then-#1 Scranton. Meanwhile the Blue Jays were left to reflect on a season that fell short of a third straight conference title game appearance and an NCAA bid. The season started where last year left off with Hopkins at the top of the conference standings. Despite losing to McDaniel in the Centennial championship game in , Hopkins was picked to finish first in the preseason conference poll, receiving five more votes than McDaniel. The Blue Jays were also ranked #23 and #24 in the USA TODAY/ESPN/WBCA and D3hoops.com preseason polls, respectively. Hopkins kicked off its season as host of the 13th annual Blue Jay Invitational, a tournament it had won eight times. Sophomore Julie Miller got off to a strong start defending her title as the Blue Jay Invitational MVP, as she posted career highs of 24 points and six steals in the win over Emory in both teams season opener. Senior captain Ashanna Randall added 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds while fellow classmate and captain Ashley Felix had a solid seven points, six rebounds and two assists. Freshman Chevanie Smith opened her career with a nine-point, seven-rebound performance, and twelve of Hopkins 13 players scored to help the Blue Jays advance to the championship game against #24 DeSales, which defeated Hendrix DeSales led Hopkins by as many as 12 points in the first half and by nine in the second before the Jays rallied to win their ninth tournament championship, Randall finished with 15 points, eight rebounds and three steals, and was selected the tournament MVP. The following day, Randall was named the first Centennial Conference Player of the Week of the season, and Johns Hopkins jumped seven spots to #17 in the D3hoops.com Poll. Conference action started immediately with Washington College visiting Goldfarb Gymnasium before the Thanksgiving break. Randall shot 6 for 9 and finished with 12 points, while 12 other Blue Jays got on the board in the win. Freshman Andrea Dodrill gave a glimpse of what she has to offer the program, as she scored eight points off perfect shooting to go along with six rebounds. Hopkins shot a season-best 55 percent from the field and held the Shorewomen to just 28 percent shooting in the conference season opener for both teams. But before the tougher portion of the conference schedule got underway, the Blue Jays prepared against more non-conference opponents. The Case Western Reserve Spartans traveled to Baltimore, where they found Hopkins feisty point guard too much to handle. Felix scored a career-high 19 points and added seven steals, five assists and four rebounds in the Blue Jays rout of Case, while Miller recorded the first double-double of the year with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Randall was one point shy of a double-double, finishing with nine points and 12 boards. The win helped Hopkins take another huge jump in the national rankings that Monday, from #17 to #12. Feeling the pressure of nearing the Top 10 list, the Blue Jays started slow at Gettysburg that night; they trailed by five points in the first half and led by just five, 41-36, at halftime. After nine lead changes and with the game tied three minutes in the second half, Randall scored nine points in a 14-4 run that gave Hopkins its biggest lead, 61-51, with 12:50 to play. Sophomore Whitney Davis, who scored 10 points in just four first-half minutes, came of the bench to score 12 straight points in 1:33, turning a edge into a lead with nine minutes to play. Davis finished with a career-high 31 points including five three-pointers and 21 second-half points. No Blue Jay would reach the 30-point mark in a game the rest of the season. But Davis performance didn t hide the fact that Hopkins was struggling. Two days after playing Gettysburg, the Blue Jays suffered their first loss of the year, to Lebanon Valley. The Flying Dutchmen shot 63 percent from the field to recover from a three-point halftime deficit in Baltimore. Hopkins fell to 5-1 overall. Maybe the loss was good for the Jays. Back on its home court two days later, Johns Hopkins easily put away Dickinson for a conference win that would prove crucial down the road it was the Red Devils only Centennial loss of the regular season. Senior Alissa Burkholder hit three three-pointers and had 11 first-half points to give Hopkins a lead at the break. She finished with 15 points while junior Katie Kimball recorded 12 points, eight rebounds, four assists and a school-record eight blocks. She passed the previous single game mark of seven blocks by Julie Slye in the season. In its last game before the winter break, Johns Hopkins defeated Swarthmore to improve to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in the conference. Hopkins survived despite shooting 28 percent from the field and being out-rebounded (54-46) for the first time of the year. Junior Amanda Leese, who missed several games with an injury, and Felix led the Jays with 10 points and eight rebounds apiece. The nailbiters resumed after a 21-day holiday break when Hopkins traveled to Phoenix, Arizona, for the Grand Canyon Classic. The Blue Jays edged Gwynedd-Mercy by four points at the half and stretched their lead to 14 points early in the second, but the Griffins never let up. With 24 seconds remaining, Gwynedd-Mercy took its first lead, 54-53, since 6:52 to play in the first half, and forced Hopkins to either convert on its final possession or lose its second game of the season. Kimball stepped up and hit an open jumper in the lane, and Felix sealed the win, 56-54, with a free throw. The next game of the tournament pinned Hopkins against the surging Saints of St. Lawrence. The Saints led from the start (6-0), at the half (36-29), and for the entire second half. Hopkins made it a two-possession game, 50-44, with 10 minutes remaining, but St Women s Basketball

7 2004 Season Review Lawrence capitalized on three Blue Jay turnovers and finished with the win. Junior Katie O Malley led Hopkins with a career-high 14 points, including four three-pointers. The following week, Kimball was selected the Centennial Conference Player of the Week after hitting the game-winning shot and blocking five shots against Gwynedd-Mercy. Despite suffering its second loss of the season, Johns Hopkins remained ranked in both national polls #23 in the D3hoops.com Poll and #25 in the coaches poll. With much to improve on, Hopkins entered its busiest time of the year, playing five games in 10 days before facing the #1 and #2 teams in the conference, McDaniel and Dickinson. The Blue Jays opened the New Year with easy wins against two teams at the bottom of the conference standings. Dodrill set career marks with 12 points and eight rebounds in the Hopkins win over Bryn Mawr, while her rookie classmate Smith led the defense with a career-high seven steals. Three days later at Haverford, the Blue Jays opened with an 11-0 run and Miller finished with a career-high 25 points in Hopkins rout of the Fords. Sophomore Tamera Means led the Jays on the boards with a personal-best 13 rebounds. As conference competition heated up, so did the Blue Jays... especially their senior leaders. Randall scored a career-high 27 points and tied her best performance on the boards with 13 rebounds, while Felix had five steals and four assists to lead Hopkins stampede over the Mules. Muhlenberg entered the Ashley Felix (left) and Ashanna Randall game leading the country in scoring with 90.0 points per game, but was held to just 64 points, while Randall was simply unstoppable, shooting 11 of 16 from the field and 5 of 8 from the foul line. Three other Blue Jays also scored in double figures in their win over Muhlenberg. Hopkins improved to 11-2 overall and 7-0 in the conference. Next up was Ursinus, a middle-of-the-pack conference team and a must-win game for Hopkins. The Blue Jays out-shot, out-rebounded and out-played the Bears to win their fourth straight game by more than 30 points. Kimball shot 3 for 3 from threepoint range and tallied 15 points, seven steals, five rebounds, two assists and two blocks in the win. Miller finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the season and her second in the last three games. She was named the Centennial Conference Player of the Week after averaging 15.6 points and 10.0 rebounds in the 3-0 week for Hopkins. The dominating wins continued at Carnegie Mellon, the final non-conference opponent on Hopkin s schedule, on January 17. This time Kimball had the hot hand, as she shot 7 for 9 from the field including 3 for 4 from three-point range. As a team, Hopkins hit 12 of 23 (52 percent) behind the arc en route to the win. Felix had seven steals to eclipse the school s career record, surpassing Leslie Ritter s mark of 316 steals from On a five-game winning streak, Johns Hopkins hosted its greatest conference and state rival, McDaniel, in a sea of blue and green at Goldfarb. The Green Terror had already lost one conference game to Dickinson and was third in the standings behind the Red Devils and Blue Jays. As expected, the teams played parallel early on and the game was a onepoint decision at halftime, when Mc- Daniel led But winning the Blue Jay vs. Green Terror matchup means playing your best all 40 minutes, and Hopkins faltered in the second half. The Jays shot just 4 for 22 (.182) and committed 15 turnovers, while the Terror out-scored Hopkins in the second half for the win. Leese finished with a team-high 12 points off 6-for-7 Whitney Davis shooting while the rest of the Blue Jays went just 10 for 50 from the field. Johns Hopkins, McDaniel, and Dickinson each had one conference loss, but that would change two days later when the Blue Jays visited the Red Devils for their second meeting of the season. Whereas Hopkins dominated from the start in the first matchup, Dickinson never let this game out of its reach. After five ties and four lead changes, the Devils led at halftime and remained ahead for the rest of the game. The Blue Jays were within two points, 50-48, with just over a minute to play, but Dickinson ended the game with a 5-0 run to win Randall led Hopkins with 17 points and 13 rebounds, but no other Blue Jay scored in double figures. On a two-game losing skid, Hopkins faced Muhlenberg, who had lost its last five, for the second time. The Blue Jays won by 27 points in the first meeting, forcing the Mules to slow down their distinctive uptempo style. This time Muhlenberg held Hopkins to 61 points 30 less than in the first game but once again couldn t out-score them, as the Mules put up a season-low 53 points. Kimball led all scorers with 17 points and Randall had her second double-double against the Mules with 10 points and 13 rebounds. The win over Muhlenberg improved Hopkins to 14-4 overall and 9-2 in the conference, and it ignited an eight game winning streak to close the regular Women s Basketball 19

8 2004 Season Review season. Franklin & Marshall was Hopkins next victim to open the month of February. The Diplomats stayed with the Blue Jays for the first five minutes before O Malley scored all six of her points in the next eight minutes to lead a 16-2 Hopkins run. Miller finished with 10 points and nine rebounds, while Randall added 10 points and eight boards in the win. Hopkins then faced every conference team for a second time, beginning with a rout of Bryn Mawr. Burkholder scored a game-high 16 points and the nine other Blue Jays who played all scored. Dodrill had a career-high 12 points in Hopkins 16th win of the year. Three days later, it was time for another meeting with McDaniel a new game but the same story, as the Terror and Jays traded baskets throughout the first half. Johns Hopkins entered halftime with a edge but McDaniel gained the lead five minutes into the second period. The Jays trailed by its largest margin, 57-48, with 8:30 remaining before they rallied. Burkholder scored 14 of her career-high 19 points as the Blue Jays crept within one, 67-66, with 1:59 to play, but McDaniel then hit two free throws to make it a three-point game. On Hopkins final possession, Davis, who scored seven points in the second half to this point, was left open on the arc for an open three, Haley Wojdowski which she drained to send the game into overtime. The game was tied at 79 with a minute remaining in the extra period before McDaniel hit one free throw to take the lead. With 30 seconds to play, O Malley found Miller open at the foul line for the go-ahead basket, and the Blue Jays shut out McDaniel in its final possession for the overtime win. With that win, the Jays were back in the hunt for the top seed in the conference tournament. Johns Hopkins and McDaniel each had two losses and were tied for second place behind Dickinson, whose only conference blemish was the early-season 16-point loss to Hopkins. The Blue Jays would need to win out and hope for a Dickinson loss in order to win the regular season title, or at least win the remainder of their games to keep their #2 spot in the standings. The final stretch began with a home game against Haverford, which Hopkins cruised past Sophomore Haley Wojdowski, starting in place of Kimball (back injury), shot 7 for 14 from the field and 4 for 7 behind the arc and finished with a career-high 19 points. She added six rebounds, two steals, and two blocks, while Randall had 11 points, 11 rebounds, three steals, and two blocks. The Blue Jays then checked Gettysburg off their list with a win behind Burkholder s 15 points. She finished 5 for 11 from the field and 3 for 6 from three-point range, while Davis and sophomore Brooke Strange added nine points apiece off the bench. It was the third time in four games that Burkholder led the team in scoring, as the senior stepped up her play in the final games of her career. Three days later, Hopkins rolled past Ursinus for its seventh straight win. Miller led the Jays with 20 points, while Randall added 15 points and eight rebounds. Hopkins shot 50 percent from the floor, went 7 for 10 from long distance, outrebounded the Bears by 20, and ended the game with a 13-2 run that included back-to-back threes by Davis. The Blue Jays were hot. Johns Hopkins played its final regular season game at Franklin & Marshall on February 22, needing the win to secure the #2 seed in the conference tournament. The top seed was out of reach; that night Dickinson finished its season with a 17-1 conference mark. Randall entered the final regular season game of her career needing 12 points to reach the 1,000- point milestone, and she finished the game with 14. She scored her 1,000th point on a free throw with 11:12 to play, becoming the 11th player in Johns Hopkins history to score 1,000 points. Moreover, Randall led Hopkins to the win over the Diplomats. The Blue Jays held just a slight lead, 29-22, at the half, but Davis scored 10 of her 13 points and Kimball had nine points and seven rebounds in the second period as Hopkins outscored Franklin & Marshall after the break. Kimball finished with her second double-double of the season with 12 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, three blocks, and two steals in 24 minutes, while Felix had another solid night with perfect 3-for-3 shooting, four assists, and four steals. The Jays shot 50 percent from the field for the second straight game, and finished their regular season 21-4 overall and 16-2 in the conference. Amanda Leese Despite having the same conference record as McDaniel, the Blue Jays earned the #2 seed in the Centennial tournament because they were 1-1 against #1 seed Dickinson, while the Terror went 0-1 against the Red Devils. Hopkins would host McDaniel in its first game of the tournament. Fueled by its overtime loss to Hopkins two weeks prior, along with its #3 seed in the tournament, Mc- Daniel entered Goldfarb Gymnasium with much to prove and much desired. Five different Terror scored in the first 6:30 as McDaniel jumped to a 12-2 lead and never relented. O Malley hit two free throws and Kimball made a fastbreak layup to bring the Jays within six, 14-8, but that was the closest they d get in the loss. Miller finished with 19 points and a career-high 17 rebounds, while Burkholder had 14 points, three assists and three steals. McDaniel advanced to the Centennial Conference Championship game, where it defeated Dickinson to avenge its early-season loss. At the season s end, Randall was named first-team All-Centennial Conference and third-team D3hoops. com All-Region, while Felix was selected to the allconference second team. It was Randall s third and Felix s second appearance on the list. Randall finished her career with 1,010 points, the 11th highest amount in Hopkins history, and with 716 rebounds, good for fourth on the all-time list. Felix ended her four years as the all-time leader in career steals (348) and fifth in assists (316), while Burkholder finished with Hopkins all-time best career free throw percentage (122 of 147,.830) Women s Basketball

Knuppel made a name for herself on the national level in track as the NCAA Division III National Champion in the javelin as a junior and senior. Her winning throw as a junior was the second-longest throw in NCAA Division III history at the time and it remains the third-longest throw in Division III history. She placed seventh at the NCAA Championships in the javelin as a sophomore and was a three-time Middle Atlantic Conference Champion in the javelin as well. On the basketball court, Knuppel led the Blue Jays to a four-year record of (.642) and three appearances in the MAC Playoffs. She helped transform the program into a postseason contender that has since made a mark at the national level. Knuppel finished her career as Hopkins all-time leading scorer with 1,305 points and still ranks fifth on the all-time scoring list at JHU. She remains among Hopkins all-time leaders in minutes played (2,304), rebounds (572), steals (115), and free throw percentage (.764). In leading the Blue Jays in scoring and rebounding as a junior and senior, she became just the second player in school history to amass over 1,250 points and 500 rebounds. She was a two-time all-conference selection. Cindy Harper Covington (Class of 88) Inducted October 5, 2002 Cindy Harper Covington was a standout member of the Johns Hopkins women s basketball team for four years while also competing for the track team for three years. A prolific scorer and rebounder, she left her name throughout the women s basketball record book and is one of just a few players from prior to 1990 who remain among the program s all-time statistical leaders. Harper Covington finished her career ranked second on the all-time scoring list at Johns Hopkins with 1,056 points and still ranks 10th on the all-time charts. She also became just the second player in school history to record 1,000 points and 450 rebounds and she remains one of just seven players in school history to reach these milestones. Harper Covington still holds school records for points (39) and field goals (16) in a game and ranks in the top 10 in field goal attempts (1,040), field goals made (436), free throw attempts (378), free throws made (184), and rebounds (489). Juliane Rolapp Huguely (Class of 91) Inducted October 6, 2001 Juliane Rolapp Huguely will always be known as a player who helped turn the Johns Hopkins women s basketball program into the power that it remains today, as she guided the Blue Jays to a record during her career. A two-time Middle Atlantic Conference MVP and three-time MAC All-Star, Rolapp Huguely scored 1,227 points during her career, good for second place on the all-time scoring list at Johns Hopkins when she graduated and a total that still ranks sixth all-time. Despite the growth of the program over the last 10 years, she still ranks sixth all-time at Johns Hopkins in minutes played (2,416), fourth in field goals made (510), fourth in assists (342), and eighth in steals (180). Rolapp Huguely was named the team s MVP three times during her career and also earned All- UAA honors two times. She developed into one of the best three-point shooters in the MAC and UAA during her career and still holds school records for career three-point field goal percentage (.421) and single-season three-point field goal percentage (.520). Dawn Richards Tolbert (Class of 85) Inducted September 26, 1998 A four-year standout for the women s basketball team, Richards led the team in scoring in each of her final three seasons, averaging over 20 points per game as a sophomore and a junior. She is the only player in school history to average over 20 points per game in a season and the first player in school history to score over 300 points in three straight seasons. Still ranked among the all-time leaders in numerous statistical categories, Richards finished her career as the all-time leader in scoring (1,388), field goals (589), free throws made (210), and rebounds (587) and remains one of just six players in school history to score over 1,000 points and grab over 500 rebounds Women s Basketball 29

Gilman travels to Baltimore and meets with the trustees on December 29. He tells them that he would create a major university devoted to research and scholarship. The Trustees elect him president the next day Daniel Coit Gilman begins his term as the first president of The Johns Hopkins University 1876 The first lecture at the new university is delivered on October 4. The university is located on the west side of Howard Street near Centre Street The university issues its first bachelor s degree Alexander Graham Bell lectures to an audience in Hopkins Hall on his experiments with the transmission of sound by using rays of light instead of wires The Johns Hopkins Glee Club gives its first concert. Woodrow Wilson sings tenor. Wilson receives his Ph.D. in 1886; in 1913 he becomes the only U.S. president to hold an earned doctorate The university s seal is adopted The Johns Hopkins Hospital opens Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky performs at the Peabody Conservatory The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine opens The university relocates to its current Homewood location The first Reserve Officer Training Corps in the United States is established on the Homewood Campus at Johns Hopkins The Applied Physics Laboratory is established to research and develop a radio proximity fuse that will explode a warhead near its target. History The Johns Hopkins University was founded in 1876 as part of a $7 million bequest left by Baltimore merchant Johns Hopkins to establish a research university and teaching hospital. It soon became the first modern university in America: a graduate institution offering collegiate preparation where knowledge would be assembled and created as well as taught. Today the school continues to reflect the ideals upon which the University was founded. Hopkins students learn, above all, how to think for themselves in an environment that fosters independence and creativity. The Homewood Campus Located just north of downtown Baltimore, the Homewood campus combines the best of urban and suburban surroundings. The campus encompasses 140 acres of parks, lawns, and gardens, bounded on all sides by residential areas of the city. The campus was originally the Homewood estate, built for Charles Carroll, Jr., son of the signer of the Declaration of Independence. Today, Homewood serves as the University s center for undergraduate studies, housing both the School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering. The Students Johns Hopkins is the nation s smallest major research university with 4,300 undergraduates and 1,625 graduate students. Students come from all 50 states and 30 foreign countries. Approximately 60% of the undergraduates are men and 40% are women, while about 28% are minority students. The Faculty The Hopkins faculty is among the nation s most distinguished a lengthy roster of celebrated scientists, scholars, authors, and engineers. The men and women engaged in scholarship and research here achieve a balance between that work and their committment to teaching. Their active involvement as leaders in their professional fields cannot help but benefit their students. With a favorable student/faculty ratio of 8:1 in Engineering and 10:1 in Arts and Sciences, most upperclass undergraduate and graduate classes are small and give students an excellent opportunity for advanced training and creative investigation. Introductory classes are usually larger because so many students must take such courses before moving on to more advanced work. These classes, however, tend to be smaller than other universities and are usually taught by outstanding members of the faculty. Johns Hopkins Quick Facts Founded in 1876, Johns Hopkins is the nation s smallest majo research university with 4,300 undergraduates and 1,625 graduate students. Approximately 60% of Johns Hopkins undergraduates are men, 40% are women, and 29% belong to racial minorities. Hopkins students represent all 50 states and 30 countries. Undergraduate studies are centered in the School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering, both located on the Homewood Campus. The student-faculty ratio is 8:1 in Engineering, 10:1 in Arts and Sciences. Almost two-thirds of Hopkins alumni enter graduate or professional schools within one year of receiving their degree -- one of the highest proportions in the nation. Of the one-third who enter the job market directly after graduation, the median starting salary for the class of 1997 was about $42,500 for Engineering graduates and $29,000 for Arts and Sciences graduates. Academic Programs The academic program at Hopkins is extremely flexible. There are no University-wide core requirements in the curriculum; undergraduate students are expected to put together their own programs with the help of faculty advisers. Students in the School of Arts and Sciences can select from 37 departmental majors or any one of three interdisciplinary area majors (Humanities, Social and Behavioral Sciences, or Natural Sciences). Engineering students choose from among 13 departmental majors and can select an accredited bachelor of science program or a bachelor of arts degree. Below is a list of all undergraduate majors. Early decision applications are due by November 15. Applicants for early decision are given special consideration by the Admissions Committee in light of the candidates strong interest in Hopkins. Early decision candidates are notified by mid-december. Regular decision applications are due by January 1, and applicants are notified the first week of April. Financial Aid Johns Hopkins offers a wide range of need-based financial aid, including grants, scholarships based on academic and personal merit, loans, and on-campus employment. Approximately 60% of the student body receives some form of financial assistance. To be eligible, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the Johns Hopkins application for aid. The Freshman Year All classes during the first semester of freshman year are pass/fail so that students have time to adjust to college without the pressure of grades. Students in the arts and sciences often use their freshman and sophomore years to sample widely from courses in many subject ares before declaring a major at the end of their sophomore year. Engineering students begin their studies with a more structured curriculum. Academic Advising Because education is so individualized at Hopkins, the University s Office of Academic Advising plays an important role in helping students plan their curriculum. Students turn to the Office of Academic Advising for information on everything from how to fulfill the requirements of a double major or initiate an independent research project to listings of internships, opportunities to study abroad, or graduate programs. In addition, the School of Engineering has an office of academic affairs to assist engineering students. The office also provides help improving study skills, offers a tutoring service, and administers an extensive grant and fellowship program. Along with each student s faculty adviser, full-time academic advisers are available year-round to assist Hopkins students in making the most of their education. Career Planning Almost two-thirds of Hopkins alumni enter graduate or professional schools within a year of receiving their degree one of the highest proportions in the nation. Whether students plan to attend graduate school or enter the job market directly upon graduation, the Career Services Office helps them develop a career planning strategy. Advisers help students evaluate career goals, build resume writing skills, and improve interview techniques. The Career Services Office also coordinates interviews with the many corporate and government recruiters that visit campus each year. Campus Life Campus activities offer numerous ways for students to become involved at Hopkins. More than 150 clubs and organizations provide a wide range of social opportunities on the Homewood campus, from student publications to community service. There is an active Greek system with 14 fraternities and sororities playing an important role in campus life. Hopkins sponsors 26 intercollegiate sports, with men s lacrosse competing at the NCAA Division I level and the other varsity teams competing at the NCAA Division III level. The University also has a varied program of intramural sports, organized by student members of the Board of Intramural Athletics. Student housing is provided for freshmen and sophomores in residence halls on the upper campus or across from the library on Charles Street. Juniors and seniors choose between University-owned or off-campus apartments. The Hopkins Student-Athlete Since its establishment, Johns Hopkins has been committed to educating its students to become tomorrow s leaders. That commitment carries over to the studentathletes that give their time and energy to athletics at the University. Hopkins athletes regularly achieve the proper balance between athletics and academics, as evidenced by the numerous All-America honors, Academic All-America honors, and NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships that have been earned in recent years. Success both on the field and in the classroom is not only possible, it is expected. The competing demands of academics, social life, and athletics present the student-athlete with a constant challenge. However, it is through this process that student-athletes grow and mature into individuals with the experience and knowledge needed to succeed in any walk of life Milton Stover Eisenhower, brother of the current U.S. president, is elected the eighth president of The Johns Hopkins University The Milton S. Eisenhower library is dedicated. The structure includes four and a half underground levels The first full-time female undergraduates arrive on campus Students mount a festival on the Homewood campus called 3400 on Stage. In future years the event becomes known as Spring Fair President Steven Muller announces the launch of an ambitious capital campaign to raise $100 million for the Johns Hopkins Institutions The university celebrates its centennial anniversary. The successful culmination of the Hopkins Hundreds campaign is announced. The campaign raised $108.9 million The G.W.C. Whiting School of Engineering is established as Johns Hopkins first named division The university signs a $40-million contract with NASA and AURA (Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc.) to establish the Space Telescope Science Institute at Homewood. The institute will become the world center of research in optical astronomy where scientists will receive information from the Hubble Space Telescope The Campaign for Johns Hopkins is launched with a $450-million goal. It concludes in 1989 with gifts totaling $644 million Campaign chairman Michael R. Bloomberg announces the Johns Hopkins Initiative and its goal to raise $900 million; one third of this amount has been pledged already The School of Arts and Sciences is named to honor alumnus Zanvyl Krieger, who has committed $50 million in an effort to increase the endowment of the school University board chair Michael R. Bloomberg announces a gift of $45 million to the Johns Hopkins Initiative, bringing his total contribution to that campaign to $100 million, the largest in history A new master plan for Homewood is adopted. An anonymous donor jumpstarts implementation of the plan, financing a six-month blitz on 24-acres of space in the heart of campus. 20 Athletic Facilities W hen you come to Hopkins for a game this winter, you are certain to see plenty of indications of progress on the Homewood campus. In addition to the ongoing construction of buildings throughout campus, the Ralph S. O Connor Recreation Center opened its doors to faculty, staff and students in January, The three-story recreation center contains a field house with courts for basketball, volleyball, and racquetball, an indoor track, weight rooms, a climbing wall, a fitness center and flexible multipurpose spaces. The building adjoins the Newton H. White Athletic Center, which has been home to the Department of Athletics and Recreation for nearly 40 years. The recreation center more than doubles the amount of available indoor recreation space for members of the campus community. Two former Hopkins athletes have played significant roles in making this project a reality. Ralph O Connor 51 committed $2.775 million to the Recreation Center. Wayne 58 and Elaine 59 Schelle committed $1 million to the project along with their $1 million for the Schelle Pavilion and $1 million to the School of Nursing. In addition, the France-Merrick Foundations, Pepsi Co. Foundation, and Michael Bloomberg 64, former Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Johns Hopkins, all pledged $1 million to the Ralph S. O Connor Recreation Center. The total cost of the project was nearly $15 million. Sasaki Associates, the architectural firm responsible for the building s design, worked closely with a committee of campus administrators, students and trustees on the project. More recently, after the crowds cleared from Homewood Field following Johns Hopkins 2005 NCAA Men s Lacrosse Championship season, and just days after the year s commencement, construction crews arrived and worked throughout the summer to resurface and revamp the historic stadium. The most outstanding improvement was the replacement of the astroturf with a state-of-the-art playing surface, Sportexe Momentum 151, which is the same surface used by the NFL s Baltimore Ravens and numerous other professional, college, and high school teams. A committee of Johns Hopkins athletic administrators and coaches selected the surface after comparing it with several others. The infill system of sand and shredded tires serves as the base, and synthetic grass-like fibers provide the closest option to a natural grass field. An identical surface was installed on the varsity practice field. The stadium s facelift also included the widening of the playing surface, the elimination of the track surrounding it, an increase in the size of the walkways around the field, and the addition of flag poles for the official class flags that hang in the stadium. The widening of the playing surface will allow the successful Johns Hopkins men s and women s soccer teams to be considered as hosts for games in the NCAA tournament. Future plans for Homewood Field include additional stands in the end-zone area opposite the scoreboard, permanent concessions and merchandising stands, and banners commemorating the championships won by Hopkins teams that play at Homewood Field (football, men s soccer, women s soccer, field hockey, men s lacrosse, and women s lacrosse). While some construction crews worked outside at Homewood Field, others were busy indoors in the Johns Hopkins varsity weight room. The weight room received new equipment, including Power Lift racks, Sorinex benches, Ivanko plates and dumbells, Woodway treadmills, and HammerStrengh machines. A new ceiling and floor, along with new lights, painting, and air conditioning, were among the additional enhancements to the varsity weight room. Corresponding with the physical changes were improvements in the weight room operating hours and accessibility. The Johns Hopkins Athletics and Recreation Department organized a new operating schedule to accomodate varsity team and individual workouts, while changing the locks and hiring more monitors to maintain the safety and condition of the room Women s Basketball
