LFSN Radio (90.9 FM "The Light") THE STARTING 5 - LIBERTY'S TOP STORYLINES Liberty (2-8) will tip off the women's portion of the St. Pete Shootout on Friday, squaring off against UCF (9-1). Liberty will be seeking its first-ever victory over the Knights and its first win over an American Athletic Conference foe. The Lady Flames are 0-1 against the Knights and 0-2 versus American opponents, including their last-second setback at East Carolina on Dec. 13. The Lady Flames, who are playing all five of their December games away from home, will look to snap UCF's six-game winning streak. Rebounding will be a key statistic to watch, as UCF (+7.9) and Liberty (+6.4) both own impressive rebound margins. The Lady Flames will also attempt to slow down the nation's No. 5 three-point shooting team (42.6 percent). Emily Lytle paces Liberty with 14.6 ppg during her first season as a Lady Flame. Her last visit to Florida (Nov. 9 at Bethune-Cookman) resulted in a career-high 24-point outburst. UCF Liberty and UCF are meeting for the second time ever but for the first time in nearly 28 years. The Lady Flames will attempt to snap the Knights' six-game winning streak and deal UCF its first loss in Florida since a Feb. 18, 2018 setback at USF. Liberty and UCF have played one common opponent this season. The Lady Flames lost at Chattanooga on Nov. 21. Nine days later, UCF posted a home victory over the Mocs. UCF is 1-0 against ASUN opponents in, thanks to a victory at Stetson on Nov. 14. Both teams are strong rebounding squads, with UCF owning a +7.9 rebounding margin and Liberty checking in at UCF ranks No. 5 nationally in three-point field goal percentage (42.6), while Liberty ranks No. 341 of 349 in three-point field goal percentage defense (38.7). UCF is receiving votes in the USA Today/WBCA Top 25, along with another of Liberty's opponents, Virginia Tech. Liberty's Keyen Green (Phil-Mont Christian Academy) and UCF's Sianni Martin (Neumann Goretti H.S.) both played high school basketball in Philadelphia and were each multiple-time all-state honorees in Pennsylvania. LAST MEETING WITH UCF JAN. 2, 1991 UCF 66, LIBERTY 59 ORLANDO, FLA. The trio of Yolanda Rhodes (14 points, 9 rebounds), Tari Phillips (12 points, 17 rebounds) and Brinda Green (11 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 6 steals) sparked the home team to victory on day one of the 1991 UCF Holiday Classic. Dawn Coleman (14 points, 4 3-pointers), Theresa Bream (10 points, 10 rebounds) and Kathy Wooten (10 points, 9 rebounds) all scored in double figures for the Lady Flames. Liberty would join the Big South the following season. UCF was in its first year as an American South Conference member, one season before it merged with the Sun Belt. PLANES, TRAINS & AUTOMOBILES A move from the Big South Conference to the ASUN Conference combined with an ambitious non-conference schedule will lead to a considerable amount of travel this season. By the time Liberty gets home from St. Petersburg, the Lady Flames will have taken 10 total flights through seven different airports (Charlotte, Charlottesville, Chattanooga, Daytona Beach, Lynchburg, Philadelphia and Tampa). Including this trip, the Lady Flames have spent 14 nights in hotels so far this season. TOURNAMENT TIME Liberty is aiming to win both of its games at a regular-season tournament for the first time since Nov. 28 and 30, The Lady Flames topped Penn State and host Georgia State to claim the GSU Thanksgiving Tournament crown. The Lady Flames are 0-2 in tournaments this season, falling to Charlotte and Norfolk State at Lehigh's Christmas City Classic, Nov. 24 & 25 in Bethlehem, Pa. LIBERTY IN THE SUNSHINE STATE Liberty is 3-10 all-time when playing in Florida, including 0-1 this season. The Lady Flames lost their season opener at Bethune-Cookman by an score in overtime on Nov. 9. The Lady Flames are playing more games in the Sunshine State this season (7) than in Carey Green's first 19 seasons combined (4). After this weekend, Liberty will return to the state for ASUN Conference games at FGCU (Jan. 5), Stetson (Jan. 8), Jacksonville (Jan. 26) and North Florida (Feb. 23). LIBERTY VS. AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE Liberty is seeking its first win against an American Athletic Conference opponent since the league was formed in The Lady Flames are 0-2 all-time against American opponents. Liberty has not played in consecutive NCAA Tournaments since 2012 and RULERS OF THE REBOUNDS Liberty has ranked among the nation s top 20 teams for rebound margin in each of the last 16 seasons, leading the country on six occasions ( , , , , and ). The Lady Flames' current rebound margin stands at an ASUN-leading +6.4, and they are averaging 13.7 offensive boards per game.
