With the win, Smith joines Jeannie Milling as the only other UAB women s basketball head coach to reach the milestone. Milling spent 17 seasons at the helm of the Blazers and compiled a record. Smith took over for Milling in 2004 and has spent her entire head coaching career (seven seasons) with the Blazers. 3-point barrage UAB tied the school record with 14 3-pointers at Manhattan in the semifinals of the WBI on March 24. The squad set the record on feb. 12, 2009 against Tulsa. Best shooting performance UAB recorded its best shooting performance of the season at Memphis on Feb. 27. The Blazers shot at a 50 percent clip (18-for-36), including a 64.7 percent performance in the second half against the Tigers. 5 UAB s bigger in texas With the victory at UTEP on Feb. 6, UAB earned its first win over the Miners in El Paso. The Blazers were 0-3 against UTEP at the Don Haskins Center prior to the win. On Feb. 20, the Blazers earned a victory over SMU, marking the program s first win in Dallas. The Blazers were previously 0-2 at Moody Coliseum. UAB has now won at least one contest at every current C-USA school. My Dear Watson Sophomore guard Khalilah Watson produced one of the best performances of her career against Alabama State on Nov. 27. She scored her first double-digit game with 10 points and registered a career-best six steals in the contest. Watson followed that with another solid performance against Georgia State on Dec. 2, scoring nine points and grabbing seven rebounds. She also recorded a career-high seven assists against Southern Miss on Feb. 13. Watson had her breakout game at Memphis on Feb. 27, scoring a career-high 22 points, all of which came in the second half. She finished the game 12-of-16 from the line and was 5-for-5 from the field in the second half. block party UAB posted a school-record 11 blocked shots against Tulsa on Feb. 10. It marked the most blocks for a UAB squad since 2006 when the Blazers had nine against Memphis. The previous record of nine had been recorded four times in program history. UAB is averaging 3.3 blocks per game, just under the school record of 3.4 set in the season. Peterson s performance Senior guard Amanda Peterson registered a seasonhigh 27 points, one shy of her career-high, and knocked down six 3-pointers against UTEP on Feb. 6. It marked the most points by a Blazer this season. The Homewood, Ala., native followed that up three games later with a 23-point performance, including a season-best seven 3-pointers, the most by a Blazer this season. 6 Manhattan on March 24 in the WBI semifinals, finishing the contest with 21 points. 3-peterson Last season, Amanda Peterson set the school s singleseason record for 3-pointers with 83. Peterson, however, has had the hot hand from beyond the arc again this year and broke her own record, currently with 98 treys this season. Her 98 treys are currently tied for second in C- USA single-season history with Louisville s Sara Nord. Cincinnati s Valerie King holds the record with 101 set in Tops in Triples With senior guard Amanda Peterson s success from beyond the arc this season, it s no surprise that UAB leads C-USA in 3-pointers per game. UAB averages a leagueleading 6.2 treys per contest, while the Blazers 6.3 average in league games tied for first with UCF. Keeping Up With the Jones Guard Amber Jones has had anything but a sophomore slump. Jones has 26 double-digit performances this season, including 24 of the last 29 games, and has been the top scorer for UAB in 12 contests. Jones earned her first start of the season against Austin Peay on Jan. 2 and produced 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Against Marshall on Jan. 30, Jones scored 22 points, one shy of her career-high, and knocked down a career-best five 3-pointers. She followed that with a career-high nine field goals and career-best five steals at SMU on Feb. 20. In the C-USA tournament opener against Marshall on March 9, Jones matched her career-high of 23 points, which she ironically set exactly one year before against SMU in the quarterfinals of the C-USA tournament. Jones continued her hot postseason play in the WBI. She has reached double figures in all three tournament games, including a 19-point performance against Manhattan on March 24. Jones went 5-for-6 from beyond the arc, matching her career-high for 3-pointers. Turn it Over The Blazers have forced their opponents into doubledigit turnovers in 122 consecutive games. The last time a UAB opponent turned the ball over less than 10 times was Hartford (8) on Nov. 23, Freshmen Phenoms Freshmen forwards Destiny Samuels and Karisma Chapman have become key components of the Blazer rotation this season. 7 Chapman has played in 27 games and had a career-high 12 boards against Austin Peay on Jan. 2. She also collected a career-high five steals in the contest. Chapman posted her first career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds against East Carolina on Jan. 27. Against Tulsa on Feb. 10, Chapman scored a career-high 20 points and added a career-best four blocked shots. She posted a career-high five blocks against Central Arkansas on March 17 and also registered her fourth double-digit rebounding game with 11 boards in the contest. a good ol chapman C-USA All-Freshman honoree Karisma Chapman posted her first career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds against East Carolina on Jan. 27. It marked the first double-double for a Blazer since Tamika Dukes had 19 points and 13 rebounds in the C-USA tournament quarterfinals against SMU on March 7, Chapman also garnered C-USA Freshman of the week honors on Feb. 21 after averaging 15.0 points and 5.0 rebounds in a pair of games against Marshall and SMU. I ll Take That UAB s 20 steals against Marshall on Jan. 30 were the most for any C-USA team this season. The mark also represents the most steals for a UAB squad since the Blazers had 20 steals against Alabama State on Dec. 9, Peterson Leaving Her Mark Senior guard Amanda Peterson scored her 1,000th career point against Austin Peay on Jan. 2. Peterson is the 24th player in UAB history to crack the 1,000-point plateau and currently has 1,274 points, good for 16th in school history. A sturdy defense UAB s defense has been stellar this season. The Blazers have held their opponents to 50 points or less in 13 games and won 12 of those contests. UAB also is 18-7 when holding its opponents to less than 60 points. One of the biggest reasons for UAB s sturdy defense has been in the category of turnovers. UAB s opponents have turned the ball over 112 times more than the Blazers, while the Green and Gold have 99 more steals than the opposition. Brown s Best Junior center Meagan Brown has recorded career bests in points, rebounds and blocks this season. She grabbed a career-best 13 rebounds against UCF on Feb. 24 and scored a career-high 11 points at UCF on Jan. 14. Against Belmont on Dec. 5, Brown matched the school s single-game record with a career-high five blocked shots, a feat that hadn t been accomplished since 2000 when Deanna Jackson had five blocks against Memphis. Brown matched her career-high with five blocks against Tulsa on Feb. 10. Blazers Win five in a Row With their Dec. 20 win over Ball State, the Blazers earned their fifth-straight win. The last UAB five-game winning streak came near the conclusion of last season, when the Blazers closed out the regular season by winning three in a row then captured three-straight victories in the Conference USA Tournament for a six-game winning streak. Pratt s Debut Junior guard LaShaunda Pratt, who sat out last season after transferring from Boston College, made her debut for the Blazers in the season-opener against Florida A&M on Nov. 14. Pratt was solid in 18 minutes of action, scoring seven points and grabbing four rebounds. Since her debut, Pratt has been a key contributor for the Blazers. She has 15 double-digit games this season and has started 15 contests. Against UCF on Jan. 13. Pratt scored a career-high 21 points and posted five assists, in addition to five rebounds, three steals and a blocked shot. 8 five steals, in addition to four assists, six points and four boards, against Memphis on Jan. 16. She raked in a career-best six assists against Marshall on Jan. 30. Peterson Earns All-Tournament Honors Senior guard Amanda Peterson was named to the Samford Thanksgiving Classic All- Tournament Team on Nov. 27. Peterson led the Blazers with 11 points against USF then had nine points in the win over Alabama State. Peterson knocked down four treys during the two games. 187 Games and counting The UAB women s basketball program has an active streak of 187 games with at least one three-point basket made. The last time the Blazers did not sink a three-pointer was on Feb. 26, 2005 at South Florida. Senior Leadership Although Peterson is the lone senior on the squad, her experience is quite valuable to this year s youthful squad. Peterson has played in a combined 124 games in her career, including all but one last season. The Homewood, Ala., native has been an ace from beyond the arc, leading the team in 3-pointers the past four seasons. Not only has she led the team, but her output has increased each season, hitting 62 treys as a freshman, 71 as a sophomore and 83 as a junior. She currently leads the team with 98 treys this season. Speaking of Peterson Peterson continues to shatter UAB s career 3-point record. She currently has 314 career treys, surpassing the 20-year-old record of 245 held by Gina Sutko ( ). The 5-10 guard also tops the school record book with a.372 career 3-point shooting percentage C-USA WOMEN S BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP Wednesday, March 9, 2011 Game #1 - (7) UAB 56, (10) Marshall 45 Game #2 - (6) Memphis 71, (11) Southern Miss 63 Game #3 - (5) East Carolina 71, (12) Tulsa 62 Game #4 - (9) UTEP 75, (8) SMU 57 Thursday, March 10, 2011 Game #5 - (2) UCF 51, (7) UAB 47 Game #6 - (6) Memphis 63, (3) Rice 52 Game #7 - (4) Tulane 83, (5) East Carolina 72 Game #8 - (1) Houston 68, (9) UTEP 64 Friday, March 11, 2011 Game #9 - (2) UCF 81, (6) Memphis 63 Game #10 - (4) Tulane 70, (1) Houston 60 Saturday, March 12, 2011 Game #11 - (2) UCF 85, (4) Tulane 73 Academic Achievements Last year, sophomore guard Nakia McDaniel and junior forward TaRonda Randall each received the C-USA Academic Medal for maintaining above a 3.75 GPA, while senior guard Amanda Peterson was named to the C-USA All-Academic Team. The Blazers posted a GPA and nine members of the squad were named to the C-USA Commissioner s Honor Roll for maintaining at least a 3.0 GPA. Brains of the operation It s no wonder UAB earned the league s GPA award last year. This year s squad features five former high school valedictorians. Amber Jones, Kara Johnson, LaKenya Lowe, TaRonda Randall and Khalilah Watson each earned top honors in their graduating class. Building Momentum Last season, the Blazers made a historic run at the C-USA Championship, reaching the title game for the first time since UAB became the first No. 6 seed to play in the championship game and also was the first team in league history to face the tournament s top three seeds. Harris No Longer member of team Sophomore guard Jala Harris has left the UAB women s basketball team due to personal reasons. Harris was named to the All-Conference USA Preseason Team and was averaging 15.5 points and 2.9 assists per game. Last season, Harris was named the C-USA Freshman and Sixth Player of the Year. 8

Harris was the third Blazer to earn the league s sixth player award during Smith s tenure and first to earn the freshman accolade. After two straight top-three finishes in the league, a youthful Blazer squad struggled in , going overall and 5-11 in conference play to finish ninth in C-USA.
