The Roadrunners played from behind the entire way but made up some ground late in the third quarter on a 10-0 run. Texas State held on in the final quarter for the win to lead the all-time series. Tesha Smith and Niaga Mitchell-Cole lead the club in double figure scoring with 12.0 and 11.8 points per game respectively, while Smith adds a team-leading 8.4 caroms a night. Smith has also scored in double digits in each of her last three outings, including a career high 22 points against Illinois State over the Thanksgiving holiday. The last time the Roadrunners started the season 2-3 was during head women s basketball coach Luby Lichonczak s first season at the helm in That same year, UTSA finished and 4-12 in Conference USA. OKLAHOMA AT A GLANCE: Oklahoma welcomes UTSA moving up in the ranks as the Sooners check in at No.17/18 in the national polls. Off a win over in-state foe Tulsa, the Sooners improve to 8-1, which is their best start since the season when OU had an identical record. Oklahoma is out-scoring its opponents by a 16.0 point margin and is led by Kaylon William s 14.1 point and 8.6 rebounds per game. Redshirt junior Peyton Little chips in with 13.8 points and 1.9 steals per outing. After dropping one to North Texas on Nov. 16, the Sooners have won seven straight games. LAST TIME OUT SAN MARCOS UTSA was outscored in the final minutes of Thursday night s I-35 rivalry game and Texas State walked away with a victory at Strahan Coliseum. UTSA saw itself down by nine points at the half, 38-29, after shooting only 38.7 percent (12-of-31) from the field and Texas State ending the second quarter on a 7-0 run. The start of the game saw both teams trading 3-pointers, combining for six by the 4:22 mark, and the Bobcats leading, In the second quarter, Texas State (3-4) reached a double-digit lead, but the Roadrunners cut the deficit to five, 28-23, with 4:53 remaining. A pair of Texas State turnovers and a missed shot led to a UTSA 6-0 run during that stretch. UTSA (2-3) faced its largest deficit in the third quarter with 1:38 on the clock after Texas State sank its 11th 3-pointer of the game along with a pair of free throws to lead by 13, The Bobcats 12 3-pointers was the most allowed by UTSA this season. With less than a second remaining in the third quarter, Niaga Mitchell-Cole sank a three that sparked a 10-0 run for the Roadrunners, which made it a two-point game in the fourth quarter, Mitchell-Cole ended the night scoring in double figures for the third time this season with 16 points and added four rebounds and a career-high six steals. The Roadrunners eventually tied the score at 56 in the fourth quarter at the 7:37 mark when Carlie Heineman completed her second free throw. Texas State eventually pulled away in the final minutes scoring 16 points to lead the all-time series Heineman was the only other Runner to score in double digits with 10 points on 3-of-8 shooting, including 2-of-4 from 3-point range. Taeler Deer led three Bobcats in double digits with 27 points. Deer had 11 of the team s 19 points at the end of the first. Kaitlin Walla and Toshua Leavitt added 11 points apiece.

Last year, UTSA tied for fourth with a 11-7 league mark. UTEP match-up to air on ASN American Sports Network selected the Roadrunners road contest at UTEP on Jan. 17 to air on its network. It was one of five women s games to be selected. Along with the season opener on the Longhorn Network, the Roadrunners will hit the airwaves twice this year. The 2016 Conference USA Basketball Championships returns to Birmingham, Ala. and this time will feature all 14 member schools. The tournament is scheduled to run from Tuesday, March 8 through Saturday, March 12. Games will be held at the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center and Bartow Arena. UAB hosted the 2015 edition, as well as the 1999 C-USA Men s Basketball Championship and the 1996 C-USA Women s Basketball Championship. Lichonczak adds 5 for season After losing five players to graduation and some to transfer, head women s basketball coach Lubomyr Lichonczak adds five to the season, including former volleyball standout Dempsey Thornton. Lichonczak will add two true freshman in Alexus Dukes (Harker Heights, Texas) and Sara Anastasieska (Sydney, Australia); junior transfers Kasia Kiejdrowska (Gdynia, Poland) and Loryn Goodwin (Houston, Texas); and Thornton. Mukosiej rounds out coaching staff In late April, head women s basketball coach rounded out his coaching staff with the addition of Ela Mukosiej, who will head up international recruiting for the Roadrunners. 8

She also played professionally overseas and was instrumental in her team s success in becoming the top Polish League. Annual holiday classic in memorial of Blair UTSA has hosted its annual holiday tournament for the past 11 years. With the passing of Rae Blair back in the summer of 2014, the UTSA women s basketball program has dedicated its Holiday Classic and renamed the event to the Rae & Craig Blair Memorial Classic (Dec ). UTSA to play a pair of ranked teams UTSA will open its campaign on the road against nationally-ranked Texas. The 8-1 start for OU is the best since the season - The Sooners are out-scoring opponents by points per game - Two Sooners lead the season box score with Kaylon Williams averaging team bests of 14.1 points and 8.6 rebounds per game - Redshirt junior Peyton Little chips in with 13.8 points and 1.9 steals per game - OU and UTSA have one common opponent for the campaign - North Texas. The Mean Green handed the Sooners its only loss of the season. - UTSA will be the Sooners final nonconference match-up of the season Smith amongst top in league in double-doubles Junior Tesha Smith is best known for aggressive play on the court as the Roadrunners sixth player of the bench. Through two seasons at UTSA, Smith has combined for seven double-doubles, which ties for sixth in the league with four other players in Conference USA. Dukes with stellar debut Harker Heights native Alexus Dukes had a stellar collegiate debut for the Roadrunners against nationally ranked Texas. The true freshman scored 18 points off of 6-of-9 shooting from 3-point range, adding six rebounds. Dukes also made her first official start after earning a pair of starts in exhibition action. Neighborhood watch: Niaga Mitchell-Cole Niaga Mitchell-Cole entered her final season with UTSA with a career 45 blocks and is now 15 away from cracking into the UTSA all-time record books. In the 10-spot is Keelah Wilson (98-00) with 61. D-fense! D-fense! Since the inception of quarters for the season, UTSA has held opponents to single digits in three quarters, both coming in its wins during the Thanksgiving Classic. UTSA did it again two days later against Houston Baptist holding the Huskies to just seven points in the third quarter. Watch your back! As of late, UTSA has been quick to steal the ball from its opponent and has recorded double figures in each of its last three games, averaging 10.0 steals per night. The Roadrunners tie for third in C-USA and rank 64th in the NCAA. In the team s last outing at Texas State, Niaga Mitchell-Cole had six of the team s 11 total steals. The Roadrunners tallied a season high of 17 against Houston Baptist over the Thanksgiving holiday, which was the most steals since March 7, 2015 when the Roadrunners met with North Texas on the road in the final regular season game of the year.
