The Roadrunners improved to all-time in season openers and in home openers with a win over Texas-Pan American last Friday night. UTSA forced 23 turnovers and held the Broncs to just 19-percent shooting in the contest. It also outscored UTPA 34-4 in the paint. Twelve different players scored for the Roadrunners, led by 10 points from sophomore Kamra King, while five different players scored at least seven points. UTSA s last 2-0 start came at the beginning of the season with home wins over Our Lady of the Lake and Huston-Tillotson. The Roadrunners return 11 players, including three starters, and added four newcomers for the upcoming season. Among the returners is King, who led the team and was the Southland Conference s top-scoring freshman last season at 10.4 ppg. The Norman, Okla., native closed the season by averaging 15.1 ppg in her last seven contests. Last Time Out: UTSA used a balanced scoring attack to put away Texas-Pan American early in a victory in the season opener for both teams on Friday night at the Convocation Center. The Roadrunners improved to all-time in home openers and evened their season-opener mark to Sophomore Kamra King led UTSA with 10 points, while junior Miki Turner and freshman Niaga Mitchell-Cole added eight apiece. Twelve of the 14 players who saw action got in the scoring column. Scouting Cocordia Texas: The Tornados are coming off a 23-5 campaign that included an 18-3 mark in American Southwest Conference play. Concordia Texas won the league a season ago and is picked to repeat, while senior guard Margaret Milling was selected as the American Southwest West Division Preseason Player of the Year before going down with an injury. Senior Paige Parrish is the team s top returning scorer after starting 25 of 28 games and averaging 6.5 points per contest. Head coach Rusty Rainbolt enters his third season at the school with a record. The Series: UTSA will face Concordia Texas for the first time in program history. The Tornados are one of seven teams (Austin Peay, William & Mary, San Francisco, Utah State, San Jose State and Seattle are the others) that the Roadrunners will see for the first time this season. Opening Act: With its win on Friday, UTSA improved to in season openers and in home openers including marks of 5-8 (season) and 8-5 (home) under head coach Rae Rippetoe-Blair. The 34 points scored by the Broncs was the fewest in the series that dates back to Texas- Pan American scored 36 points twice in losses (Jan. 10, 1986 and Feb. 21, 1987) for its previous low. It also marked the fewest points that the Roadrunners have allowed since an win over Schreiner on Nov. 15, 2009, which also was the home opener that season. Exhibit A: UTSA defeated McMurry on Nov. 3 in its lone exhibition game of the season. Senior Simone Young paced the team with 13 points and five assists, while sophomore Kamra King finished with 11 points. The Roadrunners held the War Hawks to 19-percent shooting in the game, including just 13.8-percent in the second half. UTSA used a 12-0 run over the final 2:24 of the first half to break open a close game. All four newcomers made their debut in the contest, with junior Miki Turner earning the start at point guard. Freshmen Niaga Mitchell-Cole, Akunna Elonu and Mathilde Hergott all came off the bench. The group was led by Mitchell-Cole, who finished with nine points, seven rebounds, four assists, three blocks and a steal. A New Home: UTSA officially joined the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) on July 1, 2012, after accepting an invitation on Nov. 11, The Roadrunners are part of a 10-team basketball league that includes Denver, Idaho, Louisiana Tech, New Mexico State, San Jose State, Seattle, Utah State and former Southland Conference rivals Texas State and UT Arlington. UTSA, which started athletics in , had been a member of the Southland since and the Trans America Athletic Conference (now Atlantic Sun) for five years prior to that. Coaching Milestone: UTSA head coach Rae Rippetoe-Blair hit a pair of milestones in her 12th season with the Roadrunners. On Nov. 18, 2011, UTSA defeated FIU for Rippetoe-Blair s 300th career victory and she reached 200 wins with the program on Feb. 22, 2012, in the Roadrunners triumph over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Additionally, Rippetoe-Blair finished her tenure in the Southland Conference with 136 league wins. Only Northwestern State s James Smith ( ) earned more wins (340) and conference victories (210), while coaching in the circuit. A New York: Senior Whitney York returns after missing the last two seasons with an injury. The Bryan native was granted a sixth season of eligibility after being injured following UTSA s exhibition win over McMurry last year. York enters the season at No. 19 on the Roadrunners all-time scoring charts with 798 points in 70 games. She needs

Her career average of 11.4 ppg leads all returners. Wright Stuff: Senior Whitney Wright has collected 300 rebounds in 85 games to rank 33rd on UTSA s all-time charts. The Springer, Okla., native pulled down a career-high 165 boards (5.7 rpg) last year, including 43 offensive rebounds and 122 on the defensive end. She needs just 43 rebounds to reach the top 25 and 136 boards to climb to the top 15. In addition, Wright recorded 48 blocks, which was the fifth-highest single-season total in program history. She is seventh on UTSA s all-time blocks list with 67 and can reach the top five with just four swats. From Downtown: The duo of Kamra King and Ashley Spaletta proved to be a potent one from behind the arc last season as the freshmen combined to produce 73 of UTSA s 108 makes (67.6-percent). Spaletta s 40 3-pointers were the most by a UTSA freshman since Jordan Stark hit 56 during the season. Home Cookin : UTSA will play seven of its first 10 games at home in the Convocation Center this season, including three consecutive to start the regular season. After hosting the Tornados on Monday, the Roadrunners will welcome former Southland foe Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Nov. 16) to the Alamo City before their first road trip, which is to Wichita State on Nov. 18. In all, the slate features 16 home contests. During her 12 seasons at the helm, the Ardmore, Okla., native has guided the Roadrunners to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances ( ), back-to-back Southland Conference Tournament Championships in , a pair of Southland Regular Season Titles (2003/ 09) and consecutive 20-win seasons in and 08-09, including a school-record 24 in Since her hiring in 2000, she helped transform the Roadrunners into one of the top programs in the Southland. Rippetoe-Blair led UTSA to 11 Southland Tournament appearances, including four trips to the conference finals (2003/ 06/ 08/ 09). During the season, she became the winningest basketball coach in UTSA history. She currently has 200 victories (only women s coach at UTSA with more than 150) and her.557 winning percentage is second-best in school annals. Rippetoe-Blair has mentored several outstanding student-athletes during her time at UTSA, including Southland Conference Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year Monica Gibbs, who is currently playing overseas (Amicale Steesel). She has coached four Southland Newcomers of the Year (Nikki Hendrix 2002/Dewella Holiday 2003/Vivian Ewalefo 2006/Onika Anderson 2008), two Southland Freshmen of the Year (Richelle Parks 2005/Monica Gibbs 2006), 25 All-Southland selections (seven first-teamers), two Southland Student-Athletes of the Year (Nicole Dunson 2005/Ryba Pawlaczyk 2009), four Southland All-Academic selections and a pair of CoSIDA Academic All-District honorees. Rippetoe-Blair has an overall record of (60.2 percent) in 17 seasons as a head coach. The Roadrunners have averaged 16.6 wins per season during her tenure. Last season, Rippetoe-Blair became the first coach in program history to amass 200 wins, while earning her 300th overall. Both milestones were achieved in front of the home crowd with wins against FIU (300th overall) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (200th at UTSA). Under her tutelage, Kamra King led the team in points and was the conference s top-scoring freshman. Sophomore Judy Jones was second on the team in scoring and was named honorable mention all-conference. Rippetoe-Blair s teams have been ranked among the best defensive teams in the country. UTSA was ranked in the top six nationally in scoring defense in and was second in the nation in her first two seasons ( and ). While the immediate impact Blair had on the UTSA s program might be a surprise, the success should not be. A proven winner as a head coach at NAIA Phillips University and as an assistant at Oklahoma State, she has enjoyed continued success. Rippetoe-Blair turned around a Phillips program with a mark during her five seasons in Enid, Okla. She was named the Sooner Athletic Conference s Coach of the Year after a 29-7 record. Prior to UTSA, Rippetoe-Blair was an assistant coach at her alma mater, Oklahoma State, for eight seasons. As a player, she left her mark to this day on the Cowgirls program, ranking in the top 20 in five categories. As an assistant coach, she helped build Oklahoma State as one of the top programs in the Big Eight Conference and made valuable contacts among high school coaches. Her pipeline to Oklahoma has brought former Texas Tech recruit Nikki Hendrix, and former standouts Lacy Mingee and Katie Sandefur to San Antonio. Rippetoe-Blair continued to bring excellent recruits from the state of Oklahoma with the All-America candidate and Southland s Player of the Year and league s Defensive Player to the Year Monica Gibbs from Stillwater, Okla. Rippetoe-Blair started her coaching career in 1985 as an assistant coach at Southern Nazarene in Bethany, Okla. She was at SNU for two seasons before moving to Phillips. After two rebuilding seasons at Phillips, Rippetoe-Blair coached three straight 20-win teams. Phillips went 29-7 in , as Rippetoe-Blair earned conference coach of the year honors. In , Phillips was 23-8 and 20-9 in her final season before returning to Oklahoma State. As an Ardmore (Okla.) High School athlete, she ran on the 1980 state champion mile relay team, played on the 1980 Oklahoma-Texas All-Star team and was an all-state pick in track and basketball. She was the team s MVP in softball and was named the outstanding female Athlete of the Year for Ardmore High. She and her husband, Craig, reside in Boerne, Texas.
