Frontcourt SFA LUMBERJACK BASKETBALL Outlook in Brief Aside from one of the deepest and most experienced returning front lines in the Southland Conference, the SFA frontcourt returns arguably the best one-two punch the league has seen in years. Seniors Josh Alexander and Matt Kingsley spent the season battling back and forth for the team scoring and rebounding titles, with Alexander the 2008 SLC Player of the Year eventually winning both battles. Alexander, a small forward, averaged 16.1 points per game and 5.9 boards per contest, while center Kingsley checked in at 15.7 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. The duo finished third and fourth, respectively, in the SLC scoring race last season. But, more importantly, they are the only two players among the league s top five scorers from a year ago who are returning for the season. No other conference team had two players in the top 10, let alone the top 5, last year. SFA brings back a third senior starter up front in the person of power forward Nick Shaw. Shaw was fourth on the team in scoring at 6.2 points per game a year ago and ranked third in rebounding with 5.0 boards per outing. He combined with Kingsley and Alexander to account for 54 percent of SFA s total scoring output and 48 percent of its rebounding effort last season. The experience doesn t stop at the three starters, though. The SFA frontcourt has a fourth senior in the stable in Benson Akpan. Akpan proved to be a more than capable stand-in at center for Kingsley, averaging more than four points and two rebounds in 12 minutes per contest. But his biggest contribution came as a stopper and momentum-shifter on the defensive end of the floor. Akpan blocked 46 shots, which ranked fifth in the Southland Conference and accounted for 40 percent of SFA s 114 blocks as a team. SFA s 3.6 blocked shots per game is the best average, by far, for a Danny Kaspar-coached Lumberjack team % % % % % % % % % % Field Goals 3-Point Field Goals Rebounds Assists Blocks The top four up front will be augmented by a trio of talented reserves, all of whom feature dynamic offensive skills. While the first of the three won t necessarily be a newcomer to the Lumberjack bench, the season will mark his first opportunity to make an impact on the court. Jereal Scott will join the SFA rotation after utilizing his redshirt season of eligibility in Scott averaged 18 points per game for his career at La Porte High School. He improved his defensive game by guarding Kingsley and Akpan in practice daily last season and could see time at both center and power forward this year. Freshman Zach Williams and junior transfer Aaron Smith will compete for playing time at the two forward positions. Williams is perhaps the most heralded Key high school recruit brought to SFA during Kaspar s tenure. The small forward 2007 Total from Dallas Skyline was rated the No. 16 overall recruit in the state by Rivals.com, and TexasHoops.com listed him as the No. 17 recruit in Texas. Smith, a power Lost forward, has good agility and a nice shooting touch to go with his 6-8 frame. He shot 42 percent from 3-point range Returning Steals Points Minutes Prospectus % % % % % %
last season at Salt Lake Community College, including a 59- percent effort in conference play Scoring Output % % % Kingsley/Alexander Combined All Other Returning Players All Players Lost Rebounding Output 9.38 % % % % Backcourt The biggest hole left by offseason player departures is in the backcourt. Senior shooting guard Gerald Fonzie accounted for 32 percent of the Lumberjacks 3-point field goals last season and was third on the team in scoring, contributing 13 percent of the team s total points. Perhaps most importantly, though, Fonzie was able to move seamlessly from his spot at the offguard to the point guard position, providing a solid option for when starter Eric Bell needed a breather. Last season, Bell led the Southland Conference and finished 30th in the nation with 5.7 assists per game. With 182 total assists, he was just 10 dimes shy of setting a new single-season school record. As good as he was distributing the ball, Bell might have been even better when it came to protecting it. His 2.46 assist-to-turnover ratio led the SLC and ranked 19th in the country. But he started all 32 games and played an average of 32 minutes per contest. The Lumberjacks have several options when it comes to Bell s understudy for the season. Heading into fall workouts, the leader appears to be junior transfer Girod Adams. Adams is a pure point guard out of Cloud County Community College who Kaspar predicts will... give Eric Bell a run for his money. Freshman Jarrod McDaniel from Oklahoma City is the other newcomer at the point guard position, while sophomores Eddie Williams and Preston Davis could each potentially see time at the point. Williams was SFA s sixth man a year ago, as his 5.1 points per game and 18.8 minutes per outing were each the best averages posted by a non-starter. Most of his playing time came as a shooting guard, but he also played at small forward and adequately handled some spot duty at point guard in the SLC Tournament, making him a potential back-up for Bell this season. Davis averaged just 4.9 minutes per game, but nearly all of that time was spent at point guard. Depending on which other options emerge as Bell s reserves, Davis could again fill that role in the rotation. But it is also possible that he will see significant time at the off-guard position, where his combination of shooting, passing and ball-handling skills would make him a strong triple-threat from the wing. Kingsley/Alexander/Shaw Combined All Other Returning Players All Players Lost Deadball Rebounds Junior Walt Harris is the third newcomer in the backcourt. The transfer from McClennan Community College spent his freshman year teamed with Bell in an impressive guard tandem. Harris edged Bell for North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year honors that season. Bell settled for the Defensive Player of the Year title, an award Harris took following his sophomore campaign. No slouch on the offensive end either, Harris averaged 12.3 points per game as a rookie and 13.5 points per contest last year. At 6-5, Harris brings great size to the SFA backcourt and looks like a strong candidate to take over the starting two-guard spot vacated by Fonzie. Junior shooting guard Cameron James also returns for SFA after seeing his first action in uniform last season. After gaining eligibility at mid-season, James played in seven games Prospectus
SPECIAL SEASON: SFA s 26-6 mark in is the best record for a Lumberjack team since the program joined the NCAA Division I ranks in the season. The Southland Conference title is the first for the Lumberjack program since joining the league for the season. It marks the third 20-win season in head coach Danny Kaspar s tenure and is the highest win total for a Kaspar-coached Lumberjack team to date. SFA finished the regular season with a 25-4 (.862) mark. The last time an SFA team finished the regular season with a better winning percentage was , when the Lumberjacks went 25-3 but failed to qualify for postseason play. Only four times in the 84-year history of Lumberjack basketball has a team won 25 or more games in a single season, with the 25-win total having been eclipsed in the regular season only twice and RANK AND FILE: SFA was ranked 14th in the season s final CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll. SFA had spent the previous two weeks at No. 9, after climbing to a record-high No. 6 ranking that included the program s first-ever first-place vote on Feb. 25. The Jacks spent a program-best 15 consecutive weeks in the Mid-Major Top 25 after entering the poll at No. 25 on Dec. 10, following the Lumberjacks upset win at Oklahoma. SFA then moved up in the poll each week, jumping to 22nd, 16th, then 11th, before cracking the Top 10 for the first time in school history earlier this season. VOTE OF CONFIDENCE: The Lumberjacks received at least one vote in one of the two major national basketball polls Associated Press and USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll five times last season. SFA picked up one vote in the March 10 AP Top 25 Poll. The Jacks got a school-record seven votes in the previous week s AP poll and landed two votes in the Feb. 25 balloting. SFA received a vote in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll in each of the last two weeks of December. This marked the first time since SFA LUMBERJACK BASKETBALL Notes From the Season the season for the Lumberjacks to earn a vote in a national Top 25 poll. That year, SFA earned one vote in the Associated Press poll. TOPS IN TEXAS: Only one NCAA Division I basketball program in the state of Texas posted a better win total than Stephen F. Austin, through the end of the regular season. The University of Texas posted a 26-5 record, while SFA finished at At.862, SFA s regular-season winning percentage was slightly better than the Longhorns.839 regular-season percentage. Of the 18 other D-I programs in the Lone Star State, only five had posted 20 or more wins through the end of SFA s regular season. That list includes Sam Houston State (22), the University of Houston (22), Texas A&M (22), Baylor (21) and North Texas (20). Division I Programs in Texas School... Record Texas Stephen F. Austin Sam Houston State Houston Texas A&M Baylor North Texas Lamar UT-Arlington UT-Pan American UT-El Paso Texas Tech TCU UT-San Antonio Texas State SMU Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Prairie View A&M Texas Southern Rice PLAYING THE PERCENTAGES: SFA finished the regular season with the 10th-best record in the nation. The Lumberjacks.862 winning percentage was tied for 10th in the country through games of March 9. TOURNEY TRENDS: SFA is now 1-2 all-time in the National Invitation Tournament. The Lumberjacks have made two appearances in the NIT. SFA made the field in but was defeated on the road by eventual championship game participant U-Mass. SFA earned a bid and hosted a first-round game in SFA defeated James Madison, 70-63, in the William R. Johnson Coliseum in the tournament s first round, then suffered a loss at Arkansas-Little Rock in the second round. The Lumberjacks went 22-8 overall that season with a perfect 10-0 run to the Gulf Star Conference championship. SFA moved to the Southland Conference the following season. DEFENSE FIRST: SFA s defense was dominant in The Lumberjacks held opponents to an average of 56.4 points per game, which ranked second in the nation. While good defense has long been a mark of Danny Kaspar-coached teams, the Lumberjacks had never finished better than 12th in the national rankings in terms of scoring defense. During the season, the Lumberjacks held 21 opponents to 60 points or fewer and only allowed four teams to break 70. SFA held opponents to 39.6 percent shooting from the field, which finished the season ranked 17th in the nation. EARLY BIRDS: SFA did a good job of getting the jump on the competition in the first half of games during the season. The Lumberjacks held the lead at halftime in every game but three their loss at Texas Tech, their win over UTSA in the first round of the Southland Conference Tournament and their defeat at U-Mass in the opening round of the National Invitation Tournament. SFA was 25-4 on the season when going to the locker room with the lead. DOUBLE-UP: SFA posted just three double-doubles all of the season Josh Alexander had two, and Matt Kingsley recorded one. SFA more than doubled that mark in with seven double-doubles each of the first four coming from a different player. Kingsley posted the first with 22 points and 13 rebounds against Jackson State. Nick Shaw then Prospectus
scored 17 points and pulled down 16 rebounds against Louisiana-Monroe, and Eric Bell had 18 points with 11 assists at Northern Illinois three days later. Alexander finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds at Jackson State, then recorded his seventh career double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds at Nicholls State. Kingsley scored 13 points with 10 rebounds against Texas State on Feb. 27, then recorded his fifth career double-double with 26 points and 11 rebounds including nine offensive boards in SFA s SLC Tournament win over UTSA on March 13. FOUR OF A KIND: The Lumberjacks had at least four players hit double digits in scoring in a single game six times last season against Jackson State, Louisiana-Monroe, Southern, at Oklahoma, versus Paul Quinn and against Sam Houston State. The quadruple-double against Jackson State marked the first time four SFA players hit double digits in a single game since Jan. 11, 2007, when SFA took a overtime victory at Lamar. In the Lumberjacks win over Sam Houston State, five players reached double digits the first time since SFA s Dec. 30, 2006, win over Howard Payne for SFA to put a quintet in double figures scoring. DIAL 1 FOR ASSISTANCE: Sophomore point guard Eric Bell (jersey number 1) averaged 5.7 assists per game and finished the season ranked 30th in the nation in assists per contest. He posted a career-high 11 assists at Northern Illinois. That marked the first double-digit assist effort for a Lumberjack since Marcus Clark dished out 10 in a game during the season. Bell also finished the season ranked 19th in the country in assist-to-turnover ratio at ALEXANDER THE GREAT: Junior forward Josh Alexander enjoyed a record year in The Shreveport, La., native scored 15 or more points on 20 different occasions last season, including eight performances with at SFA LUMBERJACK BASKETBALL Notes From the Season least 20 points, and had three doubledigit rebound efforts. He finished the year with 1,290 career points, moving him into 12th place on the list of SFA s career scoring leaders. During the season, Alexander became the school s all-time leader in career 3- point field goals. He hit 94 3-pointers a new career-high for triples in a season and has 239 for his career. KING FOR A DAY: Two days, actually. That s how long Matt Kingsley s dominant performance in the Southland Conference Tournament lasted. His two big games were overshadowed somewhat by the team s elimination in the semifinals, but King certainly made his mark. Kingsley averaged 24 points and 9.5 rebounds in a win over UTSA and SFA s loss against Northwestern State. He scored 26 points with 11 rebounds against the Roadrunners, then came back for 22 points and eight boards against the Demons the following night. Kingsley was named to the All-SLC Tournament team for his effort. Kingsley reached double figures scoring in 11 of his final 12 appearances last season with eight showings of 15 or more points. FAST START: SFA opened the season with a 12-1 record, the best start to a season since the program joined the NCAA Division I ranks. The fantastic start was the best 13-game mark for the program since the season, when the Lumberjacks opened the season with seven straight wins and went on to post a 14-1 record before finally picking up their second loss of the season in the 16th game. SFA s 10-game winning streak during its 12-1 start was the program s first double-digit run since the Jacks won 13 in a row during the season. NO MISTAKING: SFA was one of the more careful teams in the nation in The Lumberjacks committed just 12.3 turnovers per game, which ranked 29th in the country. At the same time, SFA s 17.0 personal fouls per game was the 58th-lowest average in the NCAA Division I ranks. SFA led the Southland Conference by far in each category. ROAD WARRIORS: SFA s 10-game winning streak early last season included five straight victories in nonconference road games and a neutralsite win. This marked the first time in program history for the Lumberjacks to win five straight road games against Division I, non-conference opponents. It was the first time since the season for SFA to win more than three straight out-of-conference road games against any level of competition. Overall, the Lumberjacks went 13-5 in games outside of William R. Johnson Coliseum, including a five-game road winning streak against Southland Conference foes that they will carry into the season. STINGY ON THE GLASS: The Lumberjacks gave up the fewest rebounds per game in the Southland Conference last season. SFA allowed just 31.2 rebounds per game. HOME-COOKED: The Lumberjacks posted a 13-1 record in home games at the William R. Johnson Coliseum and began the season with a 12-game home winning streak. The last time a Lumberjack team won more than three in a row at home to start a season was in , when SFA went 16-0 at home as part of a 31-game home winning streak that dated to the previous season and was the longest active streak in the nation by the time it was finally broken. SAFE AT HOME: In eight seasons under head coach Danny Kaspar, the Lumberjacks have compiled an (.765) record in the William R. Johnson Coliseum, including a 13-1 home mark last season. SFA is (.706) all-time in the Coliseum. The Jacks went 10-5 (.667) at home in SFA defeated UT-Tyler, 63-47, in the season opener. Kaspar s teams are a perfect 8-0 in home openers at SFA Prospectus

Head Coach Danny Kaspar Entering the season, head coach Danny Kaspar had already put his stamp on the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack basketball program. But his eighth season in charge at SFA might have been his signature campaign. The Lumberjacks finished the season with a 26-6 record that stands as the best mark in the 22-year history of the program s NCAA Division I tenure. Only four seasons in the Lumberjacks 84-year history overall have ended with better win totals, with just two of those totals having been reached in regular-season play. SFA s.862 winning percentage ranked 10th in the nation at the end of the regular season. But, perhaps most importantly, Kaspar guided the Lumberjacks to their first-ever Southland Conference championship. SFA compiled a 13-3 record in SLC play to win a share of the league s hardware and earned the No. 1 seed in the Southland Conference Tournament. This marks the first league title for the program since SFA won the Gulf Star Conference in the season, under Harry Miller, one of Kaspar s mentors. The Lumberjacks achieved their success in by playing basketball Kaspar s way. SFA put together one of the best defensive performances in Southland Conference history. Through the end of the regular season, the Lumberjacks 55.0 points allowed per game ranked second in the nation and would have been a new SLC record. It is the best defensive average for an SFA team since joining the NCAA Division I ranks and is the best mark for a Lumberjack squad in the shot clock era. Team success wasn t the only kind enjoyed by the Lumberjacks in Junior forward Josh Alexander was named the SLC Player of the Year, following the conclusion of the regular season. It is the first such honor for an SFA player since the Lumberjacks joined the league in the season. Alexander, a former SLC Freshman of the Year, led the Jacks in scoring with 16.5 points per game, through the 29-game regularseason slate. He became the school s career 3-point field goal leader after hitting a personal best 89 triples and is knocking at the door of the school s top 10 scoring leaders with more than 1,200 career points. For his efforts, Kaspar was named Coach of the Year, his first such honor at SFA. Junior center Matt Kingsley joined Alexander on the all-conference list with a second-team nod, and sophomore point guard Eric Bell was named honorable mention. The All-SLC honor was Alexander s third straight and marks the first time in program history for Jacks to land on both the first- and secondteams in the same season. Kaspar has reached his current level by turning the Lumberjack program from an also-ran in the Southland Conference to one of the most consistent teams in the league. He has guided SFA to the SLC Tournament in six of his eight seasons as coach, including twice reaching the tournament championship game. The team SFA puts on the floor these days is a far cry from the one Kaspar inherited. When the coach arrived, the Lumberjacks had gone a combined in the three seasons prior. The squad had won just four and six games, respectively, in the two seasons immediately preceding Kaspar s hiring. Since that time, though, the Jacks have turned the corner and become a competitive force in the Southland Conference. Kaspar first began showing results in his second season with the Jacks, when he led the team to a regular season record and a fifthplace finish in the SLC standings. The fifth-place finish was the highest finish for a Lumberjack team since a fourth-place showing in the season. The SLC record also qualified the Jacks for their first postseason tournament in five seasons. In year three, the Corpus Christi native saw the continued improvement of his team as the Jacks posted their first 20-win season since SFA finished the year 21-8 overall and 16-4 in the Southland Conference. Kaspar helped guide the Jacks to a second-place regular season finish and a berth in the conference tournament finals, both firsts for SFA since joining the Southland Conference. Coach Kaspar picked up career win No. 250 during the season with a victory over Southeastern Louisiana, and finished the year with a career mark of An early season victory over UT-Arlington evened Kaspar s SFA record at 35-35, the first coach since Marshall Brown to post a.500 record with the team in his first three years. In the campaign, the Lumberjacks once again won 21 games and made their second straight SLC tournament finals appearance, falling just short to UT-San Antonio, The second straight 20-plus-win season marked the first time since the mid-1980s the Lumberjacks have put together two straight seasons with 20 or more wins. The Kaspar File Overall Record: (17 Seasons) Record at SFA: (8 Seasons) Alma Mater: North Texas (1978) At Stephen F. The Lumberjacks entered the SLC Tournament as the No. 4 seed and defeated McNeese State, 72-70, in the first round, advancing to the semifinals for the third time in four years. The Lumberjacks again reached the SLC Tournament in , when they went overall with an 8-8 league record. Kaspar served as an assistant coach with the Jacks from 1983 through the 1986 season. During his three seasons as an assistant for Coach Harry Miller, the Lumberjacks recorded two 20-win seasons, won 16 games in the other season, and never finished lower than third in the conference. A 1978 graduate of the University of North Texas, Kaspar is no stranger to winning. He spent nine seasons as the head coach at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio. In his nine-season tenure, Incarnate Word posted an overall record of 219 wins against only 52 losses. That mark was the best record for any four-year institution in Texas for the decade of the 1990s. His teams at Incarnate Word posted nine straight 20-win seasons, including five seasons where his teams won 25 or more games in a single campaign. Kaspar s Incarnate Word teams also won or shared five regular season conference titles as well as four conference tournament titles. During the season, his first at SFA, Kaspar led the Jacks to a 9-17 overall record and a conference record of His team was in contention for a spot in the SLC postseason tournament until the final week of the season. Prior to becoming a head coach, Kaspar served as an assistant for some of the legends of college basketball coaching. Not only did he work for Harry Miller for three years at SFA, but Kaspar also worked on the staffs of Billy Tubbs, Gene Iba and Dr. Gerald Stockton. During his one season with Tubbs at Lamar, Kaspar helped the Cardinals to a Southland Conference title and the automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament. Lamar advanced to the Sweet Sixteen that year, losing to Larry Nance and Clemson. In 27 years as a collegiate coach, Kaspar has only been associated with six teams with losing records. In two of those seasons, the teams were one win away from.500 records or better. Kaspar and his wife, Deborah, an SFA graduate, are the parents of a daughter, 17-year-old Nicole Prospectus
