Southern Miss Thanksgiving Tournament FOR STARTERS: After a huge emotional home victory over Central Arkansas last Wednesday, the Ladyjacks struggled out of the gate on Saturday at UTSA and were never able to quite recover. The Ladyjacks will not have played a game for six straight days entering the UT Arlington contest. LAST TIME OUT: Despite outshooting and outrebonding the Roadrunners last Saturday, SFA still saw themselves on the wrong end of a loss in San Antonio. The Ladyjacks were nearly able to overcome 19 first-half turnovers but poor free-throw shooting down the stretch proved to be the demise for SFA. THE MAVERICKS: UTA has struggled mightily this season, winning just two of their first 15 contests, including three straight defeats to start conference play. The Mavericks are coming off a home loss to A&M-Corpus Christi and will carry a five-game losing streak heading into Saturday. vs UT-ARLINGTON: After dropping six straight matchups dating back to tje season, the Ladyjacks got a bit of revenge last season by beating the Mavericks twice, both of which by less than five points. SFA actually owns a commanding all-time in the series. Through 16 games last season the Ladyjacks held a 4-12 record as opposed to this season where through the exact same amount of games SFA stands at The Ladyjacks actually have one of the top 10 turnarounds in the nation in team winning percentage (.750) when compared with last year s.400 mark. The difference in winning percentage is currently the ninth best improvement in the country. ROBERTS FRESHMAN OF YEAR CAMPAIGN: After a bit of inconsistency that had much to do with foul problems, freshman forward Porsha Roberts has begun to establish herself as a Southland Conference Freshman of the Year Candidate. The Waco, Texas native has scored in double-digits in four of her past five outings, including a career-high 14 points at Southeastern Louisiana. Over her past five games, Roberts is averaging 11 points while shooting 50 percent (21-of-42) from the floor and 81 percent (13-of-16) from the free throw line. She also has 12 blocks over the same stretch of contests. TOP DEFENSIVE TURNAROUNDS: By allowing just 56.4 points per game, the Ladyjacks have made huge strides on the defensive end over the period of one season. Matter of fact, SFA is currently 10th in the nation in biggest improvement in Division I in points allowed per game, a difference of 13.2 points per game. MARION DIALING LONG DISTANCE: Senior guard Tammara Marion, who became SFA s all-time leader in made three-pointers earlier this year, is now 41st in the country in three-point field goals per game (2.5) and 20th in threepoint percentage (41.2). Marion actually has a higher FG percentage from long distance than her regular FG percentage (35.0). PARTY IN THE CUSA: With their back-to-back wins over Rice (68-64) and SMU (66-60), and their win over Southern Miss earlier this season, the Ladyjacks have defeated three Conference USA squads in a season for the first time since the campaign when SFA knocked off Southern Miss, Louisiana Tech and Tulsa. PRESEASON POLLS: With one of the top recruiting classes in the nation, the Ladyjacks earned four first-place votes in the coaches poll and three more in the SID poll and a second-place finish; however, each poll has UTSA in the top spot in the league s West Division. MARION PRESEASON ALL-SOUTHLAND: Tammara Marion was named to the all-southland Conference preseason first team on Wednesday while the Ladyjacks were selected to finish second in the SLC West according to the preseason polls of league coaches and sports information directors. Marion, who was a second team all-conference selection last year, ranked third in the conference in in scoring (16.1). 800-WIN CLUB: The Ladyjacks became the sixth member of an exclusive club with their victory over Sam Houston State in SFA became only the sixth women s program in NCAA Division I history to record 800 wins. The Ladyjacks joined Tennessee, Louisiana Tech, Old Dominion, Texas and James Madison as the only schools to ever accomplish the feat. The Ladyjacks clinched a trip to the Southland Conference Championship Tournament and nearly pulled off an upset of No. 3 Central Arkansas in the first round before falling Schneider also oversaw the development of senior guard Tammara Marion, who was named to the all-southland Conference second team and led the Ladyjacks and was fourth in the league averaging 16 points per game for the season along with 3.2 rebounds and 3.2 assists. She also set the singleseason record with 72 made three-point shots. The Ladyjacks also led the conference in offensive rebounding with 16.8 per game The second-year head coach will have higher expectations after assembling a signing class that s ranked 35th in the nation according to Premier Basketball Report, of which includes four McDonald s All-American Nominees. Schneider was named head coach of the Ladyjacks on April 20, Recognized as one of the top names at the NCAA Division II level, Schneider came to Nacogdoches after a highly successful 12- year stint at Emporia State. The Canyon, Texas native is the second all-time winningest head coach at the NCAA Division II level. Schneider came to Nacogdoches from Emporia State where he guided the Lady Hornets to a (.810) record, and the 2010 NCAA Division II National Championship. The school s all-time leader in wins and winning percentage, Schneider ranks among the all-time top 10 in fastest coaches to 100 victories, and third fastest among women s basketball coaches. Schneider spent the previous 12 seasons at ESU guiding the Lady Hornets to 11 NCAA tournament appearances. During that stretch Schneider s teams recorded two 30-win seasons, and nine 20-win campaigns. Along with the 2010 national championship, Schneider coached ESU to four NCAA Division II South Central Regional titles, two Final Four appearances, six regular-season conference crowns and three league tournament titles. Schneider made it tough on conference opponents during his time with the Lady Hornets winning 80 percent of those games. ESU posted a (.801) record versus MIAA foes. The Lady Hornets were nearly unbeatable at home sporting a (.917) record under Schneider. Schneider posted a (.600) record against nationally ranked opponents, which included four wins over No. 1 ranked teams, and was (.677) in the NCAA tournament. Schneider was the first MIAA rookie head coach to win both the MIAA regular-season and tournament titles. In 2006, the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association of four-year colleges voted Schneider as its coach of the year. He was also a three-time MIAA Coach of the Year. The 2010 Bulletin Women s Basketball National Coach of the Year and the WBCA South Central Region Coach of the Year, Schneider s players have reaped the rewards of his guidance. He has coached seven All-Americans, including two NCAA Division II Player of the Year selections, 13 firstteam All-MIAA honorees, eight conference MVPs and seven players have gone on to play professionally, including one in the WNBA. Schneider was a 1995 honors graduate of Wayland Baptist. During his time at Wayland, Schneider was a four-year letterman in men s basketball and was the school s first-ever academic All-American, capturing the honor three times.
