We struggled in the first half with their offense, but we made some adjustments at halftime. Seniors Derrick Obasohan, Donny Beacham and Keith Howell scored the first 29 points of the second half for UTA as they stretched a halftime lead to a edge after a Beacham basket with 14:09 to play. Nicholls could get no closer than eight points the rest of the way. After the Colonels cut the lead to after two Shawn King free throws with 7:35 to play, UTA went on an 11-0 run to put the game away. A 3-pointer by Brady Dawkins with 5:19 to play ended the run and gave UTA a edge. UTA jumped out to an 8-2 lead to begin the game thanks to a 3-point-play and a 3-pointer jumper by Beacham. Nicholls State used three, 3-pointers by Blaszczynski in the first half to rally for a lead with 7:53 to play. The NSU built the lead to six, 29-23, after a Jason Wilkins jumper with 5:21 to play, before UTA ended the half on a 12-4 run. A Stephen Floyd tipin at the buzzer gave the Mavericks a halftime lead. SCOUTING THE BEARKATS Sam Houston State faded in the second half of losses last week to McNeese State (78-65) and Stephen F. Austin (71-61) to drop to 7-7 in the SLC standings. Junior forward Joe Thompson and Wilder Auguste are the only players scoring in double figures at 16.0 and 10.6 per game, respectively. The Bearkats have seven players averaging 7.0 points per game or more. SHSU is 3-10 on the road this season and 3-4 in SLC games. This is the only meeting of the year between the two teams. The Bearkats won both games last season, including a setback at Texas Hall on Jan. 16, (GO TO PAGE 21) Texas-Arlington Men s Basketball Roster Numerical No. Player Pos. Ht. Wt. Year. Exp. This is the only meeting of the regular season between the two teams. Derrick Obasohan needs three rebounds to become the seventh UTA player to score 1,000 career points and grab 500 career rebounds Steven Thomas is in seventh place on the single-season free throws made top 10 list. Thomas currently has 125 made free throws this season. The most free throws in a single season is 149 by Eddie Stalling in the season. UTA can tie a school record with its eighth straight win tonight. A UTA win and two losses by Southeastern Louisiana would give UTA a chare of the regular season crown for the first time in school history. A top two finish in the regular season would give UTA the home court advantage for the first two rounds of the SLC Postseason Tournament.

21 Page 21 Maverick Basketball THE SERIES Sam Houston State leads the overall series, SHSU has won four of the past five meetings. There have been three overtime games in the past 13 meetings, dating back to the seasn. MAVS MAKE PRESEASON All-SLC SQUAD UTA senior forward Derrick Obasohan (Houston, Texas) and senior center Roy Johnson (Houston, Texas) were named to Preseason All-Southland Conference Team. Johnson joined the 500-rebound club with four boards against Nicholls State on Jan. 29. Obasohan needs 35 points to move into third place on the career scoring list and three rebounds for 500 boards at UTA. UTA FAVORED BY COACHES, SIDs The University of Texas at Arlington edged out Stephen F. Austin in balloting by the Southland Conference s coaches to be the pick in the annual preseason poll, released Oct. 21. SFA received more first-place votes (4) than UT-Arlington (2), but the Mavericks won the consensus. In the poll conducted by the sports information directors, UTA and SFA tied for the top spot with 105 total points. If anything, the polls proved this year s SLC race will be balanced. Five different teams received first-place votes in the coaches poll and four in the SIDs. UTA has never won a men s basketball title since entering the league in 1964, but a record in and a third-place finish in the conference with a 13-7 mark has carried over to the upcoming season. UTA HEAD COACH EDDIE MCCARTER The winningest coach in UTA history, McCarter is in his 12th season as the head coach of the Mavericks. McCarter is the fourth winningest coach in Southland Conference history with 150 wins at UTA. This marks the first time in McCarter s 12-year stint at UTA that the Mavs have posted back-to-back 15-win seasons. If UTA can maintain their secondplace in the SLC standings, it would mark the highest finish in the league since a second-place finish during the season. UTA has never won the regular season title in the 40-year history of the league. Only Tom Tinker, who coached for 23 years, including UTA s first seven as a four-year school, has paced the Mavericks bench for a longer period of time than McCarter. McCarter, the sixth coach in UTA s 43-year, four-year history, trails only Louisiana- Monroe s Mike Vining as the dean of the SLC coaches. OZIER, McGRATH TO REDSHIRT Senior forward Stevin Ozier (Freeport, Texas) will sit out the season and become eligible for his senior season in after transferring from Stephen F. Austin. The Southland Conference Freshman of the Year, Ozier was one of the Southland Conference s top shot blockers as a sophomore. He ranked fifth in the SLC with 33 blocked shots. Averaged 7.2 points and 4.2 rebounds in Also, freshman guard/forward Cody McGrath (Mountain Home, Ark.) will redshirt this season after missing the first half of the season with a knee injury. FREE THROWS UTA continues to rank among the top 20 teams in the nation at the foul line, shooting 74.5% for the season after Saturday s win at Nicholls State. UTA shot a season-best 90.0% (18-of-20) from the foul line against Texas State on Feb. 21. Prior to the TXST game, UTA was shooting 65.6% (88-of-134) from the foul line the previous three games, including a season-low 55.0% (22-of-40) against Stephen F. Austin. Derrick Obasohan ranks third in career free throws with 277 made. The all-time free throw leader is Paul Renfro s 398. OBASOHAN IS AWESOME Senior forward Derrick Obasohan (Houston, Texas) appears destine to become UTA s first first-team all-southland Conference player since Damon Johnson in after leading the Mavs in scoring for the eighth time in the last nine games. He became the 16th player to score 1,000 career points with a 25-point effort at Texas on Jan. 2. Obasohan ranks third on the career free throws made list with 277 and fourth place on the alltime scoring list (see page 10). He can move into third place on the all-time scoring list with 35 points. He will also become the seventh player in UTA history to scoring 1,000 career points and collect 500 career rebounds with three more caroms. He was named to the USF Holiday Classic All-Tournament Team after averaging 17.0 points and 5.0 rebounds in losses to New Orleans and South Alabama. Obasohan was named to the SLC Player of the Week honorable mention list the past four weeks, averaged 21.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game in the Mavs wins at Northwestern State and Nicholls State. THOMAS IS TREMENDOUS Sophomore forward Steven Thomas (Fort Worth, Texas) has embraced the role as sixth man of the Mavericks after starting 19 of the first 20 games. Thomas averaged 8.0 points and 2.0 rebounds last weekend. He averaged 16.0 points per game the first 12 games of the season, but moved to the bench after 20 games. Over the last six games, Thomas is scoring 7.5 points per game. Thomas ranks seventh on the single-season free throws made list with 125. He can move into sixth place with three more free throws and needs 24 to tie the all-time leader Eddie Stallings 149 in the season. Playing in his 41st game, Thomas made his mark in the UTA record books by becoming the 21st player in school history to score 30 or more points in a game with a career-best 30-point game against UTSA Jan. 10. Thomas recorded the Mavs first double-double of the year with 23 points and 10 rebounds at Texas-Pan American. A POINT OF EMPHASIS Sophomore transfer Jarrett Howell may have answered the Mavs season-long search for a point guard with 70 points, 16 rebounds, 20 assists and 10 steals during the Mavs current seven-game win streak.
