After a buzzer-beater loss to Indiana Wednesday, Penn State has its second loss by just three points in Big Ten play. The Lions' three league losses have been decided by an average of 5.3 points. B1G START At 3-3, Penn State is off to its best Big Ten start under Patrick Chambers and overall since With a win vs. Purdue, the Nittany Lions would be 4-3 in Big Ten play for the first time since the season when they went 6-3 before absorbing a fourth loss. The Nittany Lions used a 14-point comeback for its third league win vs. Minnesota (1/14). It's the third-biggest comeback under Patrick Chambers and largest since coming back from a 17-point deficit against Drexel (12/19/15). [MORE: Page 6] TOUGH D In Big Ten games only, Penn State is ranked fourth in the league in both field-goal defense (40.9%) and scoring defense (64.8ppg). Three opponents have been held below 70 points and each of the last five have scored well below their season averages entering the game. 1,000-POINT CLUB With a made jumper at the 12:19 mark in the first half against Michigan State (1/7), Shep Garner became the 33rd Penn State player all-time to eclipse 1,000 career points. He now has 1,026 career points with a scoring average of 12.1 points per game over the last three seasons. He is ranked 27th alltime in Penn State career scoring. [Scoring chart: Page 6] WATKINS NAMED FRESHMEN OF THE WEEK X 2 Mike Watkins earned his second Big Ten FOW honor Jan.16 after producing a double-double (15 pts, 15 rbds) in the comeback win over Minnesota (1/14). It was his fourth double-double of the season, breaking the PSU freshman record. He shot 67 percent (6-9) from the field with three dunks, marking sixth game this season with three or more slam dunks. Watkins is among the league leaders in field-goal percentage, converting on nearly 58 percent of shots over the last five games. Watkins previously earned FOW honors after producing 15 points, 13 rebounds, four assists and three blocks in the Nittany Lions win over St. John's (12/18) in Madison Square Garden. The first award was the first freshman of the week honor for the Nittany Lions since the rookie recognition began in BOARD GAMES Penn State is 7-1 on the season when outrebounding its opponent. They have tallied more rebounds than their opponent in three of their last four games and have a +2.5 rebound margin during Big Ten play (-0.4 on season). Penn State has a +3.6 rebound margin in 11 games won, compared to a -5.9 spread in games lost. Mike Watkins leads Penn State with 8.4 rebounds per game on the season and 8.2 in Big Ten play, fifth among all league players in conference games (first among freshmen). PHILLY PRODUCTION In the win over Michigan State (1/7), Penn State s six Philadelphia natives showed out in front of the home crowd, providing 76 percent of the teams scoring. Three of the Philadelphians (Stevens, Carr and Moore) finished in double figures scoring. MAN OF STEAL Josh Reaves leads the Big Ten in total steals (36), despite only playing in 14 games. He averages 2.6 per game, which stands as first in the league and ninth in the NCAA. He had a career-high five steals at St. John's in MSG (12/18) and against vs. Minnesota (1/14). Players must participate in at least 75 percent of their team's games to technically be included in Big Ten and NCAA stats. Reaves missed the first five games with a knee injury and will reach 75 percent mark at Purdue. MICHAEL SWAT-KINS Mike Watkins has the second-most blocks (51) of any player in the Big Ten and the 11th-most of any Division I player. He is second in the league and is 14th (first among freshman) in the NCAA with 2.7 blocks per game. Watkins entered the Top 10 in PSU season blocks and is on pace to break into the top half. All four of the top spots are held by Calvin Booth with his rookie total (101) holding spot No. 2. Penn State has now had at least one player with 50 or more blocks in each of the last four seasons, a feat not achieved by the program since Calvin Booth in Watkins had eight blocks vs. Wright State (12/3), which is tied for the sixth-most all-time by a Penn State player and are the most since He is the only player besides Calvin Booth to tally at least eight blocks in a game. MONEY IN THE BANKS Payton Banks is in the Top 4 in the Big Ten in total 3-pointers (50), 3-point percentage (38.8) and 3-pointers per game (2.6). Nearly 70 percent of Banks' field goals this season (50-72) are from behind the arc. He has had four or more 3-pointers in five games this season. Since being named the 12th head coach in program history June 6, 2011, the Philly native quickly energized his players and staff, as well as the Penn State fan base with his passion, enthusiasm and his team s all-out style of play. The freshman class - the first Top 30 recruiting class in PSU history - clearly illustrates the progress Chambers and his staff have made during their time in Happy Valley. The future continues to be bright as Penn State will welcome a four-member consensus Top 15 class (at the time of signing) to begin their Nittany Lion careers in Chambers has sent players into the professional ranks in each of the last two years with Tim Frazier ( ) spending time with the New Orleans Pelicans, Portland Trail Blazers and Philadelphia 76ers, and with D.J. Newbill ( ) playing professionally in Europe in Turkey. The senior class produced a Euroleague player (Newbill), a Kansas City Chiefs practice player (Ross Travis), a Ford engineer (Alan Wisniewski) and a Penn State graduate student in accounting with eight-consecutive semesters of a 4.0 GPA (Kevin Montminy), proving all venues of success are available. Penn State has had 16 or more wins in a season six times since , including each of the last three seasons under the direction of Chambers. The Nittany Lions had not previously reached 16 wins in three-consecutive seasons since joining the Big Ten Conference. These wins include five over Top 25-ranked teams in his tenure with two coming last season alone vs. Indiana and Iowa. In both victory and defeat, however, the Philly native s teams are heralded for their work ethic, perseverance and relentless attitude. During his time with the Nittany Lions, Chambers has guided five players to a combined seven All-Big Ten honors, including Tim Frazier s first-team nod in 2011 and most recently with Brandon Taylor s third-team selection in Frazier ended his career as the all-time leader in assists at Penn State a record Chambers also holds to this date at his alma mater Philadelphia. When D.J. Newbill s PSU career ended, he was the fourth-ranked scorer in Nittany Lion history, after just three seasons, and Ross Travis has the third-most rebounds of any player to ever don the Blue and White. To Penn State students, Chambers is known around campus for his infectious energy. He ordered up a pair of golf carts and began making spur-of-the-moment trips around the University Park campus distributing t-shirts. In his first few years, he visited amusement parks, pep rallies, student groups, and classes and threw out first pitches. Chambers even went as far as to go behind the counter to serve free Big Macs to students at State College s downtown McDonald s and donned a Penn State football jersey and helmet to fire up the famed Nittanyville student campout. The Spartans missed too many buckets instead, missing 16 of 23 3s and they shot 37 percent from the floor overall in the second half. Penn State earned its first win over Michigan State since 2011 and the first under head coach Patrick Chambers. The Nittany Lions are 3-0 all-time against the Spartans on neutral courts. The Nittany Lions have won each of their last three games played in the Palestra. With a made jumper at the 12:19 mark in the first half, junior guard Shep Garner became the 33rd Penn State player all-time to eclipse 1,000 career points. Penn State effectively distributed the ball, making assists on 69 percent of its field goals 18 of the 26 Penn State baskets were assisted. Sophomore guard Josh Reaves posted a season-high tying six assists Penn State claimed the edge on the boards for the second game in a row, holding a advantage in rebounding. The Nittany Lions are 6-1 when out-rebounding their opponent. Penn State is now 7-0 this season when holding opponents below 70 points. Penn State s six Philadelphia natives showed out in front of the home crowd, providing 76 percent of the teams scoring. Three of the Philadelphians (Stevens, Carr and Moore) finished in double-figure scoring. The Nittany Lions keyed in on Michigan State s top player in Miles Bridges to earn the win. The freshman, who leads MSU s scoring efforts with 15.4 points per game, was limited to four points on 25% shooting from the floor PENN STATE BASKETBALL PAGE 31
