20 Head Coach Julie Goodenough Fifth Year at Abilene Christian School Record: (.689) Career Record: (.593) Hometown: Haskell, Texas Family: Husband, Rob, and daughters, Bailey and Macy Degrees: Associate of Arts in Science from West Texas College Bachelor of Arts in exercise and sports studies from Texas-Arlington Masters of Education in sports administration from Texas Tech A veteran head coach with 20 years experience at all three major collegiate levels (NCAA DI, DII, DIII), Julie Goodenough recently completed a successful fourth season leading the Abilene Christian women s basketball program. Her team went 26-4, won the Southland Conference Championship at 17-1, and earned the program s first-ever NCAA DI postseason berth in the WNIT where it lost at UTEP in the first round. In leading the Wildcats to four-consecutive winning seasons since her arrival back in the Big Country, Goodenough was named 2016 Southland Conference Coach of the Year and helped junior guard Alexis Mason win the school s first conference Player of the Year trophy since Goodenough also received Coach of the Year honors from The Rotary Club of Abilene and the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches. Goodenough s gang produced an overall win total that is the fourth largest in program history, trailing only a pair of 31-win seasons in and , and a 27-win team from Additionally, the Wildcats 17 conference victories are a program best and the most by any Southland Conference team vs. its league since 2003 when UT- Arlington won 17 games. For Goodenough a decorated 22-year coaching veteran was her winningest season since leading Hardin-Simmons to a 26-2 record and the NCAA DIII Sweet 16 in Her highest season win total of 27 came during the campaign after leading the Cowgirls to the Elite 8. ACU s postseason appearance was the 10th of Goodenough s career, but first in the WNIT. She led Charleston Southern twice to the WBI and made it to the NCAA DII regionals with the Wildcats in 2013 following their share of the Lone Star Conference Championship with Midwestern State. ACU completed the regular season under Goodenough s watch ranked No. 1 in the Southland Conference in seven categories: scoring (75.6 ppg), rebounding (40.9 rpg), assists (13.8 apg) and blocks (4.4). The Wildcats also posted the top scoring margin of +14.3, played the best 3-point defense (.279) and made the most 3-pointers per game (7.9). Within the national rankings, ACU was consistently ranked among the top-25 schools in scoring, margin of victory, 3-pointers made per game and steals. Mason averaged a league best 17.5 points per game through her 30 starts and shot an impressive 42.8 percent from the floor while knocking down 35.7 percent of her 3-pointers (89-249). Mason s number of 3-point field goals and attempts were both school season records. Additional postseason individual accolades went to junior Suzzy Dimba, who received Second Team All-Conference honors as well as her third consecutive All-Defensive Team citation, while junior Sydney Shelstead made Third Team All-Conference for the second straight season. ACU had all five of its starters average 10.0 or more points per game with three players ranked among the top-10 conference leaders in rebounding: Lizzy Dimba (7.8), Sydney Shelstead (7.4) and Suzzy Dimba (7.7). Mason led the team in scoring followed by Shelstead (14.1), Suzzy Dimba (11.8), Whitney West Swinford (11.0), and Lizzy Dimba (10.1). This same starting five finished last season all averaging 10.0 points per game or better, while in all four starters but Lizzy (9.8 ppg) averaged 11.0 points per game or more. During their first year together in the Southland, Goodenough and the Wildcats won 60 percent of their games and recorded two milestone victories. On Thanksgiving Eve 2013, ACU defeated UT Arlington, 79-72, for its first win over a NCAA DI school in 20 years, and right before Christmas the Wildcats edged their regional rivals from Texas Tech in Lubbock, The team regularly eclipsed the school s single-game threepoint records. Overall, ACU connected on 291 of 873 long-range attempts (.333) and on Feb. 18, 2014 the Wildcats hit a record 18 treys on 50 attempts. Senior Renata Marquez sank eight three-pointers to tie a single-game record shared with two others, but set a new standard for most attempts with 17. The Wildcats went on to win eight conference games their first year to place seventh out of 14 teams, and both Dimba and Marquez made the Southland Conference s list of honorable mentions. Dimba also was the only league freshman voted onto the all-defensive team. A student-athlete who was barely recruited out of Conroe (Texas) High School, Marquez flourished under Goodenough s coaching style as she ranked among the Southland Conference s top-20 leaders in scoring, rebounding, assists and steals. Marquez made Second Team All-Lone Star Conference during Goodenough s first year at ACU and finished her decorated career with 1,285 career points, 598 rebounds and 298 assists. Marquez later made the Southland s All-Academic Team and was one of nine Wildcats (out of 12) to make the Southland Conference s Commissioner s Honor Roll for the Spring 2014 semester. ACU s squad of underclassmen came within a victory of duplicating their record from the season and finished 9-9 vs. the Southland following a 1-5 start. The Wildcats also scored victories over several prominent DI programs, including Eastern Washington, George Mason and Air Force in finishing at By year s end the Wildcats ranked among the upper half of the conference in all but three statistical categories and were tops with point field goals made per game and 15.6 offensive rebounds per game. They also finished third with steals per game, which ranked them 17th nationally. A native of Haskell, Texas, Goodenough became the program s sixth head coach on March 27, 2012 and transformed a program hindered by consecutive losing seasons into conference champions during her first 20 #GoWildcats #ACUE4C

21 season on the bench. With many of the same players coming back from a campaign in , Goodenough maximized her roster s talents throughout the season as the Wildcats went on to share the Lone Star Conference regular-season title with Midwestern State at ACU and Goodenough were picked to finish seventh in the LSC that season, but they instead posted an overall mark of 21-7, which served as the program s first 20-win season since The Wildcats also earned their 12th appearance in the NCAA Division II South Central Region Tournament and first since Goodenough s efforts earned her co-coach of the Year honors from the Lone Star Conference, making her the sixth Wildcat coach in the LSC era Burl McCoy ( , and ), Suzanne Fox ( ), Wayne Williams ( ), and Shawna Lavender ( ) to earn this prestigious honor. Several of Goodenough s players made all-conference with junior guard Mackenzie Lankford being tabbed to the league s first team for the third straight year. Marquez was voted second team and senior center Kelsey Smith was named honorable mention. Point guard Whitney (West) Swinford was voted the league s Freshman of the Year, and three-years later became the first Wildcat studentathlete across all sports to win both a Lone Star and Southland Conference Team Championship. As a team, Goodenough s Wildcats ranked 12th nationally in scoring offense (74.8 ppg) as they averaged the seventh-most 3-point field goals per game with 8.4. ACU also possessed one of the best defenses in all of D-II as evidenced by its 16th-ranked scoring margin (12.7) and 23rd-ranked field goal percentage defense (.353). Opponents struggled year-round from beyond the arc, as the Wildcats boasted the third best 3-point field goal defense (.249). Goodenough s four-year record at ACU is (.689) and following the Wildcats win over Air Force in 2014 she passed the program s first coach, Dr. Joyce Curtis, for fifth place on the school s all-time win list. On Jan. 15, 2013, Goodenough won her 300th game as a collegiate head coach after the Wildcats prevailed over Incarnate Word, 76-65, and two years later she won her 50th game with ACU at Houston Baptist.
