Brandon Causey scored the lone goal of the weekend for the Purple Aces while Eric Teppen posted 15 saves while playing in goal during both games. Evansville posted a record last season About Saint Louis Saint Louis is 1-0 this season after opening the 2013 campaign with a 3-1 victory over Oral Roberts. Robert Kristo, Francisco Vizcaino and Kingsley Bryce each got on the scoresheet in the contest. Saint Louis is ranked 14th in his week s NSCAA/ Continental Tire Poll, and as high as seventh in the nation this week (Soccer America). Last year the Billikens fi nished with a 16-5 overall record, winning the Atlantic 10 and advancing to the NCAA Tournament. Coach Luzzi On the Weekend We are going to have another challenging weekend. Evansville is perennially a very good team, they are well coached, they are organized, they will be hard to break down and they are quite good on set pieces. With Saint Louis, they are ranked in all the polls, somewhere in the top-15 and for good reason. They are a very good team and we will have to have a very good performance to get something out of that game. The biggest thing for us is that there were a lot of positives from last weekend, we were very unfortunate not to come out of the weekend 2-0, and I think the guys are up and excited to make amends for what happened last Sunday. Lucky 13 Senior James Stevenson scored his fi rst goal of the season, and the 13th of his NIU career, in the season opening victory over Cincinnati. Stevenson scored three goals last season and is the career leading scorer on the current Huskie roster. Gaschot Gets His First Bertrand Gaschot scored his fi rst career goal by netting NIU s fi rst goal of the 2013 season against Cincinnati in the Wolstein Classic. Gaschot, who appeared in 13 games last season as a freshman, claimed his fi rst career points with the goal. Gaschot was named to the Wolstein Classic All-Tournament Team. Glaeser Posts a Zero Andrew Glaeser, making his fi rst appearance in goal as a Huskie, made four saves and earned a shutout in NIU s season opening win against Cincinnati. A redshirt sophomore transfer from Oregon State, Glaeser had played just 30 career minutes during his time with the Beavers. Glaeser was named to the Wolstein Classic All- Tournament Team. 10 Make Their Debut NIU had 10 players make their Huskie debut in the Wolstein Classic against Cincinnati or Ohio State. Seven Huskies, Shawn Vroom, Cody Witkowski, Daegen DeBono, Adam Lightner, Chris Bernard, Richard Hall and Miles Herbert, were see-

2 ing their fi rst collegiate action. Two, Sanel Hasanovic and Andrew Palumbo, were seeing their fi rst Division I action after playing two seasons in junior college, while Andrew Glaeser saw his fi rst action at NIU after beginning his career at Oregon State. Huskies Tabbed Third in MAC Preseason Poll Northern Illinois was picked to fi nish third in the MAC Preseason Coaches Poll. Akron was selected as the favorite in the conference, followed by 2) West Virginia, 3) NIU, 4) Bowling Green, 5) Buffalo, 6) Western Michigan and 7) Hartwick. Exhibition Recap Northern Illinois went in its two exhibition contests. The Huskies hit the post twice and had a penalty saved but drew with IUPUI, 0-0, on Aug. 17. NIU then defeated UIC, 2-0, on Aug. 24 behind goals from Isaac Kannah and Bertrand Gaschot. Challenging Slate As has been customary under Eric Luzzi, Northern Illinois has put together another challenging schedule in Two Huskie opponents are ranked in this week s NSCAA/Continental Tire Poll (No. 5 Akron, No. 14 Saint Louis) while four more, Fairleigh Dickinson, Michigan State, Northwestern and St. Mary s, are receiving votes in this week s poll. New Kids On the Block With just 12 returnees on the 2013 roster, the Huskies have turned over nearly half the roster as 11 newcomers help make up the 23-man squad. NIU s 11 newcomers hail from: England (3), Illinois (2), Missouri (2), Florida, Michigan, Washington and Wisconsin. New Faces on the Bench In addition to the newcomers on the fi eld, NIU also has two new members on its coaching staff as assistant coach Mark Jones and volunteer assistant Ross Brady each begin their fi rst season at NIU. The lone returnee among NIU s assistant coaches is Garrett Biller, he is in his fi fth season at NIU. The Trio in Goal With the departure of four-year starter Jordan Godsey, who fi nished his NIU career ranked 13th in NCAA Division I history with 35 career shutouts, the Huskie goalkeeping trio has a total of 30 minutes of collegiate experience entering Redshirt sophomore transfer Andrew Glaeser played 30 minutes last season while at Oregon State while senior Miles Herbert did not see action behind Godsey and freshman Mike Pavliga begins his fi rst season of collegiate soccer. Crossing the Pond Three of NIU s 11 newcomers come to DeKalb from England as Chris Bernard (Langley), Richard Hall (Billericay) and Albert Levett (Southend-on- Sea) join the Huskies. A fourth newcomer, Andrew Palumbo, spent some of his childhood in England but went to high school in Florida and junior college in Georgia. Two of NIU s returnees, seniors Gael Rivera (Oslo, Norway) and James Stevenson (Falkirk, Scotland), also hail from Europe. Conference Changes The Mid-American Conference has gone from eight men s soccer members to seven as Florida Atlantic moved to Conference USA for the 2013 season. The league will continue to play a single round-robin in the regular season with four teams advancing to the conference tournament to be hosted by the regular season champion. Up Next Northern Illinois will begin its home slate next week as the Huskies host the NIU adidas Invite. Luzzi was promoted to head coach on July 1, In his first season as NIU head coach, Luzzi made an indelible impression on the Northern Illinois soccer program. The Huskies tied No. 1 North Carolina in Chapel Hill in his second game as at the helm. Luzzi s inaugural season also saw standout victories over Oregon State, Wisconsin, and Milwaukee to retain the Lewang Cup. NIU fi n- ished the year , making Luzzi the first NIU men s soccer coach since 1969 to have a winning record in his opening season. Following a 2010 season that saw the Huskies post a record, including a perfect record against the Big Ten with victories over Northwestern and Wisconsin, as well as a Lewang Cup victory over Milwaukee, Luzzi took NIU to new heights in His third season at the helm saw the Huskies post a record, tying the program-record for wins, en route to a Mid-American Conference championship and a bid to the 2011 NCAA Tournament. NIU defeated Western Illinois 3-0 in the fi rst round of the tournament before bowing out to second-seeded Creighton. Northern Illinois was ranked as high as No. 13 in the adidas/nscaa national ranking and No. 16 in the RPI during the 2011 campaign, finishing with a program-best RPI of 24. Following the season, five Huskies received All-MAC honors and four players received NSCAA All-Great Lakes region honors - the most in the region. In 2012, Luzzi and the Huskies played one of the most diffi cult schedules in the country, playing five foes that were ranked in the top-fi ve in the country. After winning just one of its fi rst eight games, Luzzi s Huskies rallied to reach the MAC Championship game for the secondstraight season. Along the way, NIU earned quality wins against Big Ten champion Northwestern and MAC newcomer West Virginia, beating the Mountaineers twice, including in the MAC Tournament semifinals. Five Huskies earned Academic All-MAC honors in 2012 while three Huskies, including goalkeeper Jordan Godsey, earned MAC All-Tournament team recognition. In four years as Luzzi s starting goalkeeper, Godsey recorded a school-record 35 career shutouts, 13th-best in NCAA history, and also fi nished with a school-record 0.80 goals against average. Luzzi was promoted to associate head coach of the Huskies in March In 2006, he helped guide Northern Illinois to the Mid-American Conference regular season and tournament championships. That year, under the tutelage of Luzzi, goalkeeper Joe Zimka set an NCAA record for goals allowed average, and the Huskies set the NIU record for shutouts in a season with 14. In 2008, Luzzi was part of the staff that coached the Huskies to eight shutouts, a win over No. 2-ranked SMU, and a trip to the MAC Championship game for the second time in three years. A native Chicagoan, Luzzi followed up a stellar prep goalkeeping career at St. Ignatius High School as a four-year letterman and starting keeper at Saint Mary s (Minnesota). His résumé includes two campaigns as head coach for Schaumburg High School prior to his return to his alma mater, where he spent fi ve seasons guiding the Cardinals. Luzzi holds a USSF National A License, NSCAA Premier National Diploma (with distinction) and Level III National Goalkeeping License, a USSF Youth License and a Dutch Soccer Federation Youth Coaching Certificate.
