Fairleigh Dickinson is the fourth team receiving votes outside the top-25 in this week s NSCAA/Continental Tire Poll and is ranked 30th by College Soccer News. David Cornell and Tchamy Dantse Dantse have each scored two goals to pace the offense for the Knights while Jacob Lissek has played all fi ve matches in goal, recording four shutouts while conceding just the two goals to Albany. About Saint Mary s Saint Mary s makes the trip from the west coast with a record, having opened the season with a pair of wins but now winless in their last three. Carlo Eikani leads the Gaels in scoring with a pair of goals while Andre Rawls has played four of the fi ve matches in goal for Saint Mary s, posting 18 saves with a 0.97 goals against average. This will be the fi rst trip outside the Golden State this season for the Gaels who have played four home matches, with their load road game coming at Cal State Northridge. Coach Luzzi On the Weekend These are two teams that have each made pretty good NCAA Tournament runs in the last couple of years. Fairleigh Dickinson has a heavy international infl uence in its team, so they are very mature as a group. They are also a big team and we are going to have to be sharp in all aspects of the game because they don t give away a lot. Saint Mary s is a very technical, good soccer-playing team, pretty quick on the ball. It s going to be another challenging weekend for us but our guys are in a good place. As long as we come out with the right amount of energy, I think we will have two good performances and right now I want to focus on the performance and the results will take care of themselves. Leads the Way Andrew currently tops the Mid-American Conference in goals against average and save percentage. s 0.72 goals against average is slightly better than that of Akron s Fernando Pina (0.77) while his.800 save percentage just edges Bowling Green s Michael Wiest (.760). Nearly a Year Later Sean scored NIU s fi rst goal in a 2-1 comeback win over UW Green Bay in the NIU adidas Invitational (Sept. 15). The goal for, the fi fth of his career, was his fi rst in almost exactly a year as his last tally came in the Northwestern Lakeside Classic against Iona on Sept. 16, 2012., along with Isaac, was named to the all-tournament team at the NIU adidas Invitational. Huskies Tabbed Third in MAC Preseason Poll Northern Illinois was picked to fi nish third in the MAC Preseason Coaches Poll. Akron was selected as the favorite in the conference, followed by 2) West Virginia, 3) NIU, 4) Bowling Green, 5) Buffalo, 6) Western Michigan and 7) Hartwick. Challenging Slate As has been customary under Eric Luzzi, Northern Illinois has put together another challenging schedule in Three Huskie opponents are ranked in this week s NSCAA/Continental Tire Poll (No. 10 Saint Louis, No. 15 Akron, No. 16 Northwestern) while three additional foes, including one this weekend, Fairleigh Dickinson, are among those receiving votes in the poll. New Kids On the Block With just 12 returnees on the 2013 roster, the Huskies have turned over nearly half the roster as 11 newcomers help make up the 23-man squad. NIU s 11 newcomers hail from: England (3), Illinois (2), Missouri (2), Florida, Michigan, Washington and Wisconsin. New Faces on the Bench In addition to the newcomers on the fi eld, NIU also has two new members on its coaching staff as assistant coach Mark Jones and volunteer assistant Ross Brady each begin their fi rst season at NIU. The lone returnee among NIU s assistant coaches is Garrett Biller, he is in his fi fth season at NIU. The Trio in Goal With the departure of four-year starter Jordan Godsey, who fi nished his NIU career ranked 13th in NCAA Division I history with 35 career shutouts, the Huskie goalkeeping trio has a total of 30 minutes of collegiate experience entering Redshirt sophomore transfer Andrew played 30 minutes last season while at Oregon State while senior Miles Herbert did not see action behind Godsey and freshman Mike Pavliga begins his fi rst season of collegiate soccer. Conference Changes The Mid-American Conference has gone from eight men s soccer members to seven as Florida Atlantic moved to Conference USA for the 2013 season. The league will continue to play a single round-robin in the regular season with four teams advancing to the conference tournament to be hosted by the regular season champion. Up Next NIU will return to action next Saturday, Sept. 28, when the Huskies travel to East Lansing, Mich., to face Michigan State. Game time against the Spartans is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT. Luzzi was promoted to head coach on July 1, In his first season as NIU head coach, Luzzi made an indelible impression on the Northern Illinois soccer program. The Huskies tied No. 1 North Carolina in Chapel Hill in his second game as at the helm. Luzzi s inaugural season also saw standout victories over Oregon State, Wisconsin, and Milwaukee to retain the Lewang Cup. NIU fi n- ished the year , making Luzzi the first NIU men s soccer coach since 1969 to have a winning record in his opening season. Following a 2010 season that saw the Huskies post a record, including a perfect record against the Big Ten with victories over Northwestern and Wisconsin, as well as a Lewang Cup victory over Milwaukee, Luzzi took NIU to new heights in His third season at the helm saw the Huskies post a record, tying the program-record for wins, en route to a Mid-American Conference championship and a bid to the 2011 NCAA Tournament. NIU defeated Western Illinois 3-0 in the fi rst round of the tournament before bowing out to second-seeded Creighton. Northern Illinois was ranked as high as No. 13 in the adidas/nscaa national ranking and No. 16 in the RPI during the 2011 campaign, finishing with a program-best RPI of 24. Following the season, five Huskies received All-MAC honors and four players received NSCAA All-Great Lakes region honors - the most in the region. In 2012, Luzzi and the Huskies played one of the most diffi cult schedules in the country, playing five foes that were ranked in the top-fi ve in the country. After winning just one of its fi rst eight games, Luzzi s Huskies rallied to reach the MAC Championship game for the secondstraight season. Along the way, NIU earned quality wins against Big Ten champion Northwestern and MAC newcomer West Virginia, beating the Mountaineers twice, including in the MAC Tournament semifinals. Five Huskies earned Academic All-MAC honors in 2012 while three Huskies, including goalkeeper Jordan Godsey, earned MAC All-Tournament team recognition. In four years as Luzzi s starting goalkeeper, Godsey recorded a school-record 35 career shutouts, 13th-best in NCAA history, and also fi nished with a school-record 0.80 goals against average. Luzzi was promoted to associate head coach of the Huskies in March In 2006, he helped guide Northern Illinois to the Mid-American Conference regular season and tournament championships. That year, under the tutelage of Luzzi, goalkeeper Joe Zimka set an NCAA record for goals allowed average, and the Huskies set the NIU record for shutouts in a season with 14. In 2008, Luzzi was part of the staff that coached the Huskies to eight shutouts, a win over No. 2-ranked SMU, and a trip to the MAC Championship game for the second time in three years. A native Chicagoan, Luzzi followed up a stellar prep goalkeeping career at St. Ignatius High School as a four-year letterman and starting keeper at Saint Mary s (Minnesota). His résumé includes two campaigns as head coach for Schaumburg High School prior to his return to his alma mater, where he spent fi ve seasons guiding the Cardinals. Luzzi holds a USSF National A License, NSCAA Premier National Diploma (with distinction) and Level III National Goalkeeping License, a USSF Youth License and a Dutch Soccer Federation Youth Coaching Certificate.
