Should the Chippewas defeat Middle Tennessee, it would be the first time under Sue Guevara the Maroon and Gold have opened up a season 3-0 and the first time since the season when CMU started 6-0. Middle Tennessee junior Olivia Jones was voted Preseason Player of the Year in the C-USA preseason poll. Jones enters Thursday s game 36 points shy of 1,000 career points. The Chippewas had at least five double-digit scorers in their first two games led by freshman Presley Hudson scoring 21 and 32 points respectively. The Blue Raiders feature two players who scored in double-figures led by senior Brea Edwards. For the eighth consecutive season the Blue Raiders were selected as C-USA preseason favorites. The Chippewas will be collecting diapers prior to tipoff to benefit Pregnancy Services of Central Michigan and William Ellis Brockman Infant Pantry. Any fan that donates a package of diapers will receive one free ticket to the game. NCAA Record The Chippewas set a NCAA record Sunday against Oakland University scoring 45 points in the first quarter. The 45 points is the most in the ten minute span since women s basketball converted from halves to quarters this season. The next closest is 39 points in one quarter which was accomplished by Long Beach St., Robert Morris, Morehead State and Seton Hall. Im-PRES-sive Presley Freshman Presley made a statement in her opening weekend with the Chippewas tallying 53 points in two games. Her 26.5 ppg averaged is 14th-best in the country and her 21 made field goals is currently tied for second most. Hudson Turns Heads Hudson nabbed two honors after her weekend performance as she was named College Madness High-Major National Player of the Week, and MAC West Player of the week honors. Hudson s 53 points leads the Mid-American conference in addition to her 21 made field goals. Offense on Fire CMU s offense has been off to a quick start to start the season, averaging 97.5 ppg, 12th best in the nation. The Chippewas had six double-digit scorers in their first game, and five against Oakland on Sunday. CMU s 110 points on Sunday is currently fourth-most in the NCAA this season. Da Jourie Dishes it Out Senior guard Da Jourie Turner is averaging 5.5 assists this season, third-most in the conference. Turner dished out seven dimes Sunday against Oakland University, her career-high is 10. Harris With the Hot Hand Jasmine Harris has started off her Chippewa career with the hot hand from beyond the arc. The UMass transfer is shooting 50 percent on the season (6-of-12), which included an impressive five made triples in Sunday s game against Oakland. The redshirt junior is averaging 13.5 ppg, secondbest for the Maroon and Gold. New Year, New Team The Chippewas have a new, youthful squad that features 10 freshmen and sophomores. All five sophomores made at least two starts last season, the most among any MAC institution. CMU s Roster is Home Grown Central Michigan s roster features 13 of its 14 players who hail from the state of Michigan. 3 News and Notes Guevara Inks Five-Year Deal On March 27, 2015 Central Michigan University announced it has signed women s basketball coach Sue Guevara to a new five-year contract. Having joined CMU in 2007, Guevara has coached 10 of the program s 26-member 1,000-point club and six of the top-10 three point shooters. In 2013, Guevara led the Chippewas to their first MAC Tournament title and first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since CMU also won its first West Division title in During her time at Central Michigan, Guevara has coached two players to MAC Freshman of the Year honors, three to the MAC Sixth Player of the Year award and six MAC All-Freshman selections, as well as the program s second MAC Tournament MVP. Guevara has guided 21 All-MAC selections, including two-time first-team selection Crystal Bradford. The senior also became the program s first MAC Player of the Year and its first Defensive Player of the Year in Bradford earned a gold medal with USA Basketball at the 2013 World University Games. Last season Guevara tallied her 250th career win. Familiar Face Former Chippewa Shonda Long joins the CMU staff as video coordinator. Long ranks seventh all-time in career points (1,439) and second in three-point field goals made (230). She holds the program record for points scored in a single game (40). Prior to joining the Chippewas coaching staff, Long spent some time at Alma College as an assistant. MAC Tournament Last year marked the ninth consecutive season the Maroon and Gold made it to Cleveland, Ohio for the Mid-American Conference tournament. The Chippewas bowed out in the second round against in-state rival Western Michigan, Bradford L.A. Bound Crystal Bradford became the first Chippewa ever selected in the 19-year history of the WNBA draft and just the third player from a Mid-American Conference school to be selected in April. Her seventh overall pick was highest ever in school and conference history. Four Quarters = New Rules Media timeouts will occur at the first dead ball at or below the five-minute mark of each period and at the end of the first and third periods. Additionally, the first team-called timeout of the second half will become a media timeout. In the new four-quarter format, teams will have four timeouts (three 30-second timeouts and one 60-second timeout). A team may use the 60-second timeout at the discretion of the coach during the first or second half of the game. Teams will be allowed to carry over three of those timeouts into the second half. Each team will be awarded one 30-second timeout in each overtime period, plus any unused timeouts remaining from the second half. In non-televised games, teams will have five timeouts (three 30s and two 60s). 8 Sue guevara Head Coach Ninth Season Sue Guevara has rebuilt Central Michigan back to its former glory during her time with the Chippewas, leading the team to its first Mid-American Conference Tournament title and NCAA Tournament appearance since 1984 during the 2013 season. Bradford also became the program s first MAC Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year in In 2015, Bradford was selected seventh overall in the WNBA draft by the L.A. Sparks. Her first round pick made her the highest ever selection in the MAC and first ever in program history. Also among the honors received under Guevara s tenure are two MAC Freshman of the Year honors, three MAC Sixth Players of the Year awards and six MAC All-Freshman selections, as well as the program s second MAC Tournament MVP in Crystal Bradford. Bradford is also the only player in program history to earn WBCA Region 4 All-American nominee honors, claiming the distinction in both and In addition, 10 players have joined CMU s 1,000-point club under Guevara, five of whom currently rank in the program s top 10 in career scoring. In 2014 Bradford, Taylor Johnson, Niki DiGuilio and Jessica Green appeared in the 1,000-point club, making CMU just the 12th program in NCAA history to feature four 1,000-point scorers on the same roster. Other highlights during Guevara s tenure include setting a single-game attendance record with 5,195 fans against Georgetown on Nov. 25, 2010, defeating the highest ranked team in program history, No. 12/14 Purdue on Dec. 11, 2011, an upset of No. 23 Louisville on Dec. 2, 2010, both the final win in Rose Center and the first win at McGuirk Arena, back-to-back trips to the MAC Tournament and the first title since 1984, four-straight 20-win seasons and four-straight postseason appearances. CMU played No. 2 Duke at the Paradise Jam and visited No. 7 Kentucky, No. 4 Notre Dame and No. 17 Purdue during the regular season. CMU s non-conference schedule prepared it for a Mid-American Conference season in which it started 12-0 and finished 16-2 to claim the first MAC West title in program history. In , the Chippewas faced the third-toughest non-conference schedule in the country, taking on likes of No. 5 Notre Dame, Purdue, Green Bay twice, St. Joseph s and South Dakota State. The non-conference schedule prepared the Chippewas for MAC play where they started 8-0 for their best start since the campaign. During the season, Guevara s team went on a seven-game win streak, the longest since the , to make an appearance in the MAC Tournament championship game. CMU came within 1.5 seconds of advancing to the NCAA Tournament, but No. 2 seed Eastern Michigan scored a layup just before time expired to claim the conference title. The win campaign marked the program s best season since (21-8). The 10.5-game improvement in (18-14) from Guevara s first season is the third-largest in MAC history. Prior to CMU, Guevara served as an assistant coach at Auburn for three seasons under Nell Fortner, head coach of the gold medal winning 1998 World Championship and 2000 Olympic teams. The Tigers advanced to the WNIT Elite Eight in and sent a pair of players to the WNBA during Guevara s time there. Guevara is a native of Saginaw, Mich. where she attended Saginaw St. Stephens High School.
