The Chippewas lead the all-time series 0-8 and have won the last six match-ups. The Bulls last victory came on Jan. 26, 20 when they defeated CMU in Mount Pleasant. Under Coach Guevara the Chippewas have only fell to the Bulls three times. CMU is 8-3 during Guevara s tenure. A season ago CMU finished 3-8 (.49) overall, - (.389) in the MAC while UB ended its campaign 9-3 (.594) overall, -7 (.6) MAC. After winning its first six games of the season, Buffalo is 2-4. UB leads the conference in scoring defense, allowing just 55.2 points per game, the Chippewas currently average 73.9 ppg, second best in the MAC. UB s junior guard Joanna Smith leads Buffalo in scoring and is sixth in the MAC, averaging 6. points per game. Mailing Address...00 Rose Center...Mount Pleasant, MI Press Box Phone /3594 News and Notes Return of the MAC Reyna Frost exploded for a career-high 27 points Saturday, as the Central Michigan women s basketball team claimed an 8-6 victory over Kent State in its Mid-American Conference opener at McGuirk Arena. The Chippewas are 6-3 in MAC openers under Coach Guevara. Five Chippewas scored in double figures, in addition to Frost s 27 points Tinara Moore had, and Presley Hudson, Cassie Breen and Jasmine Harris had 0 each. CMU outscored the Golden Flashes, 44-3, in the second half to record its fourth victory of at least 20 points this season. Making it Reyna Freshman Reyna Frost recorded a career-high 27 points in CMU s MAC opener Saturday. The Reese, Mich. native shot 3-of-20 (65 percent) from the floor, pulled down nine boards, dished out three assists and added one steal. Saturday s game marked the fifth consecutive start for the freshman. Breen Machine Cassie Breen has been a steady threat from behind the 3-point line this season. Breen has made 33 3-pointers on the season, a number that ranks second in the conference. Breen is knocking down triples at a 44 percent rate, which also ranks second. The Sophomore was lights out against SIUE scoring a career-high 30 points, making a career-high eight triples. Breen s eight 3-pointers is a game-high among the conference this season. 70 is the Magic Number The Chippewas are 6-0 this season when they score 70 points or more. All of the Maroon and Gold victories besides Loyola, the Chippewas have scored more than 70 points. CMU defeated Loyola on Nov. 25. Offensive Weapons Central Michigan has featured six different high scorers this season. Presley Hudson, Tinara Moore, Jewel Cotton, Cassie Breen, Da Jourie Turner and Reyna Frost have all led the Chippewas at least one game in scoring. Im-PRES-sive Presley Freshman Presley Hudson has made a statement to begin her Chippewa career. The Wayland, Mich. native is averaging 6.0 ppg to lead the Chippewas and puts her seventh in the conference. She is the only freshman within the top 20 in scoring in the MAC. NCAA Record The Chippewas set a NCAA record Sunday, Nov. 5 against Oakland University scoring 45 points in the first quarter. The 45 points is the most in the ten minute span since women s basketball converted from halves to quarters this season. The next closest is 39 points in one quarter which was accomplished by Long Beach St., Robert Morris, Morehead State and Seton Hall. 3 News and Notes College Madness High-Major National Player of the Week, and MAC West Player of the week honors (/6). New Year, New Team The Chippewas have a new, youthful squad that features a combined 0 freshmen and sophomores. All five sophomores made at least two starts last season, the most among any MAC institution. CMU s Roster is Home Grown Central Michigan s roster features 3 of its 4 players who hail from the state of Michigan. The 3 student-athletes from Michigan ranks first among the state s Division I programs, followed by, Oakland (0), Michigan State (7), Eastern Michigan (5), Western Michigan (5) and Michigan (3). Guevara Inks Five-Year Deal On March 27, 205 Central Michigan University announced it has signed women s basketball coach Sue Guevara to a new five-year contract. Having joined CMU in 2007, Guevara has coached 0 of the program s 26-member,000-point club and six of the top- 0 three point shooters. In 203, Guevara led the Chippewas to their first MAC Tournament title and first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 984. CMU also won its first West Division title in 204. During her time at Central Michigan, Guevara has coached two players to MAC Freshman of the Year honors, three to the MAC Sixth Player of the Year award and six MAC All-Freshman selections, as well as the program s second MAC Tournament MVP. Guevara has guided 2 All-MAC selections, including two-time first-team selection Crystal Bradford. The senior also became the program s first MAC Player of the Year and its first Defensive Player of the Year in 204. Bradford earned a gold medal with USA Basketball at the 203 World University Games. Last season Guevara tallied her 250th career win. Familiar Face Former Chippewa Shonda Long joins the CMU staff as video coordinator. Long ranks seventh all-time in career points (,439) and second in three-point field goals made (230). She holds the program record for points scored in a single game (40). Prior to joining the Chippewas coaching staff, Long spent some time at Alma College as an assistant. MAC Tournament Last year marked the ninth consecutive season the Maroon and Gold made it to Cleveland, Ohio for the Mid-American Conference tournament. The Chippewas bowed out in the second round against in-state rival Western Michigan, Bradford L.A. Bound Crystal Bradford became the first Chippewa ever selected in the 9-year history of the WNBA draft and just the third player from a Mid-American Conference school to be selected in April. Her seventh overall pick was highest ever in school and conference history. Freshman within the top 6 in MAC rebounding Reyna Frost ranked 3rd 8.3 rpg Freshman within the top 20 in MAC scoring. During her time with the Chippewas Guevara has compiled 30 wins in the last eight seasons, including four consecutive seasons of at least 20 wins from Her 30 wins at CMU are already second-most in program history, while her victory at Miami (Oh) on January 4, 205 marked career victory No Guevara has guided 2 All-MAC selections, including two-time first-team selection Crystal Bradford. Bradford also became the program s first MAC Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year in 204. In 205, Bradford was selected seventh overall in the WNBA draft by the L.A. Sparks. CMU played No. 2 Duke at the Paradise Jam and visited No. 7 Kentucky, No. 4 Notre Dame and No. 7 Purdue during the regular season. CMU s non-conference schedule prepared it for a Mid-American Conference season in which it started 2-0 and finished 6-2 to claim the first MAC West title in program history. In 202-3, the Chippewas faced the third-toughest non-conference schedule in the country, taking on likes of No. 5 Notre Dame, Purdue, Green Bay twice, St. Joseph s and South Dakota State. The non-conference schedule prepared the Chippewas for MAC play where they started 8-0 for their best start since the campaign. During the 20-2 season, Guevara s team went on a seven-game win streak, the longest since the , to make an appearance in the MAC Tournament championship game. CMU came within.5 seconds of advancing to the NCAA Tournament, but No. 2 seed Eastern Michigan scored a layup just before time expired to claim the conference title. The win campaign marked the program s best season since (2-8). The 0.5-game improvement in (8-4) from Guevara s first season is the third-largest in MAC history. Prior to CMU, Guevara served as an assistant coach at Auburn for three seasons under Nell Fortner, head coach of the gold medal winning 998 World Championship and 2000 Olympic teams. The Tigers advanced to the WNIT Elite Eight in and sent a pair of players to the WNBA during Guevara s time there. Guevara is a native of Saginaw, Mich. where she attended Saginaw St. Stephens High School.
