If you follow the Ball State women s basketball team, you ve seen that storyline play out multiple times this season. The Cardinals nearly weaved a different tale Saturday, one that would have proven to be extremely distasteful. Frustrated for most of three-plus quarters, they needed a furious rally in the final three minutes to escape by the skin of their teeth with a victory against Western Michigan in Worthen Arena. All was good in the end, but getting there was a wild adventure. Ball State (8-7, 0-4 Mid-American Conference West) needed every ounce of fight it could muster during a game that had a choppy rhythm and tons of hand-wringing angst. The Cardinals led 7-6 with 3: left in the opening quarter, but fell behind after that and found themselves without a lead for the next 3 minutes, 45 seconds against a team they had beaten at Western Michigan on Jan. 3. The Cardinals trailed 4- at halftime, but that was nothing new. They ve had several lackluster opening halves before turning up the intensity in the second half. That burst wasn t there for much of the second half against the Broncos (5-, 7-7 MAC West), and for a long time it looked as though there might not be one. The deficit caused the level of irritation to mount.players couldn t hit shots as the Cardinals made only 6.3 percent of their field-goal attempts through the first three quarters. They committed 3 turnovers during that time. Sallee received a technical foul with one minute left in the third quarter after voicing his displeasure about several calls in the previous 9 minutes. Morrison dealt with another frustration, injuring a foot in the first two minutes of the game and being hobbled the rest of the way while playing 9 minutes. She said she simply tried to do whatever she could to help the Cardinals win. Morrison made only -of-4 shots, but tied for the team lead with five assists and didn t have a turnover. Numerous smaller contributions proved to be major factors in the comeback.frannie Frazier came off the bench to provide a career-high eight rebounds and tied her career best with three steals. Renee Bennett blocked two shots. Moriah Monaco made two free throws with seconds left in the game to give the Cardinals a five-point lead at Shelby Merder helped provide solid blockout on the boards to limit the Broncos to just one offensive rebound in the final five minutes after they snagged 3 before that. A strong dose of that came from MAC Player of the Year candidate Nathalie Fontaine. The senior forward posted her 3st career double-double with 7 points and 0 rebounds while facing aggressive inside play from Western Michigan defenders. Western Michigan had Ball State on the ropes, leading with three minutes to play. Then the Cardinals outscored the Broncos -0 the rest of the game, getting points on their final seven possessions. Fontaine s driving basket gave Ball State a lead with :35 to go, the first time it was ahead since the 3: mark of the first quarter. Five free throws by four different players after that sealed the win. Ball State shot 67 percent (8-of-) from the field in the fourth quarter. Fontaine bumped her career point total to,036, 55 shy of the school record of,09 by Tamara Bowie. Fontaine also tied her career high with five assists. Monaco finished with points and Bennett had 0. A team may use the 60-second timeout at the discretion of the coach during the first or second half of the game. Teams will be allowed to carry over three of those timeouts into the second half. Each team will be awarded one 30-second timeout in each overtime period, plus any unused timeouts remaining from the second half. In non-televised games, teams will have five timeouts (three 30s and two 60s). Four of the timeouts can carry over to the second half. Brady Ball: Head Coach Brady Sallee plays one of the toughest nonconference schedules in the Mid-American Conference year in and year out. In 03-4, Sallee faced six teams in non-conference action that were postseason participants in 0-3. In the first 35 seconds of the second half of Wednesday s women s basketball game, Central Michigan forward Tinara Moore was stranded beyond the 3-point line on the left wing with the ball. The 6-foot-3 sophomore looked to each side of her and found nobody. She peered into the post and saw teammates covered. Having lost her dribble, and Ball State defenders backing off because she s not a deep perimeter shooter, Moore picked a third option. She shot the ball, and it went in the basket for a 3-point goal. It was only Moore s third successful 3-pointer of her career, two of which came Wednesday. That was indicative of how the game unfolded for Ball State. The Cardinals sputtered and stuttered. They missed shots. They didn t defend. And in the end, they lost to the Chippewas in a showdown for first place in the Mid-American Conference West Division race. They whooped us tonight, Cardinals coach Brady Sallee said. Indeed, the Chippewas (6-7, 0- Mid-American Conference West) did as they punched Ball State (6-6, 8-3 MAC West) in the mouth in a showdown for sole possession of first place in the West Division. An overall lack of energy and poor shooting forced Ball State to fall behind early during a game in which it never led. The Chippewas were on top 33-7 at halftime and led by as many as 9 points early in the fourth quarter. Falling behind in the first half is nothing new for the Cardinals, but many times they were able to overcome a deficit. Ball State shot just 35.7 percent from the field, its third-worst number of the season. A.7 percentage from the 3-point line was its worst in the past eight games. Central Michigan s 44.6 percent shooting was the best against the Cardinals this season. Sallee believes there s value in learning by watching the video of a bad performance, but he thinks he knows what he s going to see when he turns it on. Fontaine was among a precious few positive contributors as she posted her 9th career double-double with 9 points and 4 rebounds (seven on offense). She increased her career point total to,97 and trails Ball State all-time leader Tamara Bowie by 9 points. Fontaine received little help from several other starters who struggled on offense. Jill Morrison, Moriah Monaco and Renee Bennett combined to make only 3-of-5 shots and score nine points. Morrison and Monaco combined to shoot -for-4 from the 3-point line. Shelby Merder gave a boost with eight points in the first half off the bench. Frannie Frazier provided nine off the bench in the second half and added four steals and four rebounds. Carmen Grande made 4-of-8 shots and scored 0 points. But the lack of a spark hurt the Cardinals all game. The upcoming stretch of games will be challenging as the Cardinals play four of their next five on the road. So far that hasn t included the two MAC division leaders. The Cardinals were 0- against East leader Ohio and are 0- against Central Michigan with a game at the Chippewas on Feb. 4. Two of those three losses were in Worthen Arena. Central Michigan coach Sue Guevara, an assistant at Ball State in , has led her team into first place in the West by winning seven straight games. Moore led the Chippewas with 0 points and rebounds.
