FG% Knight Notes 'n Trends St. Catherine shot 44.8 percent against the Knights on Saturday, marking the first time a Carleton foe has connected on better than 40 percent of its shots against the Knights this season. In 10 games, nine opponents have shot worse than 40 percent and four have shot 30 percent or worse. Dating back to last season, only three times in 26 games have Knight foes shot better than 40 percent. The Knights are 21-5 in those contests. Carleton's last three opponents, Concordia, St. Thomas and St. Catherine, have combined to go 11-for-60 (18.3 percent) from three-point range. Carleton, the leading rebounding team in the MIAC, has posted rebounding margins of +21 against St. Thomas last Wednesday and +17 against St. Catherine. For the season the Knights own a +9.0 rebounding margin, tops in the MIAC. Carleton has won 10 straight over St. Mary's and 14 of the last 16. Carleton head coach Tammy Metcalf-Filzen is 15-4 against SMU as Carleton's head coach. Carleton's opening MIAC slate featured five road games, with four of those five opponents being MIAC Playoff qualifiers a year ago. They beat Bethel and Hamline and lost to St. Benedict and Concordia-Moorhead. The Knights end the MIAC's first half by traveling to the fifth MIAC Playoff qualifier a year ago, Gustavus, on Wednesday, Jan. 17. Carleton plays nine of its final 11 regular-season games at West Gym, where the Knights are an astounding 56-6 against conference opponents over the last six seasons. Head coach Tammy Metcalf-Filzen coached her 300th career game in the Dec. 6 win over Bethel and coached her 250th game as Carleton's head coach on Dec. 11 against Concordia. She recorded her 200th career win with Carleton's Nov. 24 win at Pomona-Pitzer (Calif.). Metcalf-Filzen was as head coach at her alma mater, St. Olaf, from , and is now in her 10th season at Carleton. She is the second winningest active coach in MIAC women's basketball in terms of overall victories. Carleton won for the first time this season when trailing at the half when they beat Bethel on Dec. 6. Last year Carleton was 5-6 when trailing at the half and 13-1 when leading at the half. Carleton leads the MIAC field-goal percentage defense (33.3%), field-goal percentage (45.9%) and rebounding margin (+9.0/game). The Knights, though, rank last in turnover margin at -6.4/game. Carleton St. Mary's Scouting the Cardinals Under rookie head coach Shawn Stimmel, the Cardinals are in the midst of a major rebuilding project after making the MIAC Playoffs in 2001, 2002 and The Cardinals have struggled offensively in a major way, ranking second-to-last in the MIAC in scoring offense with their 25.8 turnovers per game the worst mark in the conference. SMU has yet to break the 60- point barrier in a single game this season. Rebounding has also been an issue for SMU, as they rank ninth in the MIAC in rebounding margin. Junior forward Jessica Weisbrod has been the Cardinals most consistent scorer, averaging 10.5 points per game and shooting a decent 42.3 percent from the floor. Junior guard Kelly Tanke provides an outside threat and averages 9.1 points per game. After that, though, the Cardinals have lacked any sort of consistent offensive threat. Sophomore post Danielle Dehning averaged 6.2 points and 5.6 rebounds a year ago, but both of those numbers have dipped in her second season. Last Season at Winona: (W), Carleton 55, SMU 40 Megan Vig '06 scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds and Carleton held SMU to 22 percent shooting in beating the Cardinals, The Knights allowed only five field-goals in the second half. Ashley St. Olaf Luehmann added 11 points and five rebounds for the Cardinals. The outcome was never really in doubt, as Carleton scored the first nine points and stretched the lead to 23-7 on an Anna Biewen three-point play at the midway point of the first half. The Knights stretched the lead to 17 on a Kari Christianson '06 three-point play before settling for a halftime advantage. Biewen added nine points off the bench for the Knights while Christianson and Annie Isler added seven points each. The Knights blocked eight shots and had a +6 turnover margin, turning it into a 13-2 edge in points off turnovers. at Northfield: (W), Carleton 68, SMU 40 Megan Vig '06 scored 15 points, 13 in the first half, as Carleton used an 18-0 run late in the first half to race past St. Mary s. The Knights shot 50 percent in the first half, broke from a slim margin to lead at the half, Annie Isler added 12 points and four assists as Carleton won for the ninth time in its last 11 games. SMU was led by Ashley Luehmann s eight points and four rebounds. The Cardinals shot only 26 percent for the game and turned the ball over 22 times, leading to 22 Carleton points. Carleton St. Olaf Scouting the Oles The Oles have struggled in the early portions of this season, winning only once over the first 10 games. St. Olaf ranks fourth-worst in scoring offense, third-worst in scoring defense, third-to-last in turnover margin and second-to-last in rebounding margin. Still, though, the Oles are a dangerous foe for the Knights, as Carleton's Northfield counterparts always seem to rise to the occasion against their archrivals. The Oles do sport one of the conference's top threepoint shootint attacks, led by senior Christina Sampson. The guard is knocking down 34.4 percent of her long-range attempts and ranks fourth in the conference with 2.10 long-range shots made per game. Her backcourt mate, senior Holly Grimsrud, is fifth in the MIAC in three-point accuracy at 41.7 percent and fifth in three-pointers made at 2.00 per game. Inside the Oles rely on the sister combination of juniors Kristina and Danielle Stoermer. The duo combines more than 14 points and nine rebounds a contest. Sophomore guard Kelsey Oja rounds out Pat Buresh's starting rotation. The reserves are a bit thin in the scoring department, as sophomore Mary Kleingard in the team's top-scoring sub at 4.5 points per game. Last Season at St. Olaf: (W), Carleton 70, St. Olaf 58 Megan Vig '06 scored 26 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and added four steals as Carleton ended the game on a 15-6 run in beating St. Olaf. Hannah Oken-Berg and Sarah Lincoln added 11 points each for the Knights, who beat the Oles for the 11th time in the last 12 meetings. Holly Grimsrud paced the Oles with 15 points, canning five 3-pointers, and added five assists and Danielle Stoermer added 10 points and five boards. at Carleton: (W), Carleton Megan Vig'06 scored 15 points but Carleton made only 8-of-21 from the line and St. Olaf canned 10-of-20 from three-point range in upsetting the Knights, The win gave the Oles possession of the Presidents Cup. Christina Sampson paced St. Olaf with 24 points, canning six 3-pointers, while Paige Bromen came off the bench to tally career highs with 18 points and 11 rebounds. The Knights lost for the first time in eight game at West Gym to their Northfield rivals, dating back to the season.
