Two other freshmen, Jenay Bojorquez and Te'a Adams, also contributed in their first collegiate appearances, logging 19 and 17 minutes, respectively. Bojorquez, a point guard, grabbed three rebounds and served up a pair of assists with a steal while Adams also had a pair of assists and a steal to go alongside four points. Gomez, a two-year letterwinner, is one of four returning starters for San Diego State. The mastermind behind the Aztecs' offense on the court, she shot at a.360 clip (36-for-100) from 3-point range last season, the league's sixth-best percentage. Three-time MW All-Academic Team honoree and three-year letterwinner Thorderson helped SDSU engineer the program's best 3-point shooting season last year and will be relied upon heavily from beyond the arc for her final campaign. Welcome Back! In addition to having six newcomers, including the nation's 23rd-ranked and the Mountain West's best incoming class, the Aztecs welcome back an impressive amount of offensive output from a year prior. Four starters from last year's team will once again don the Scarlet and Black: seniors McKynzie Fort, Geena Gomez, Lexy Thorderson and Khalia Lark. Five letterwinners from the squad are also expected to contribute this season: Arantxa Gómez Ferrer, Cheyenne Greenhouse, Abby Lowe, Monique Terry and Baylee Vanderdoes. The sophomore guard tied her career-best with 10 field goals and came up with three steals to help SDSU raise its record to 4-6 on the season and send the Titans (2-10) to their 10th loss in a row. The Aztec defense enjoyed a spectacular day, limiting the Titans to an opponent season-low field-goal percentage, as the visitors connected on just 17 of 59 attempts (28.8 percent) from the floor, including a 6-for-30 clip (20.0 percent) from three-point territory. SDSU didn't fare much better overall, sinking 22 of 62 shots from the field (35.5 percent), including a 2-for-15 effort (13.3 percent) from beyond the arc. However, the Aztecs forced 21 turnovers while committing a season-low nine miscues of their own. Despite a rebounding deficiency, SDSU also outscored CSUF in the paint and maintained a sizable 15-2 spread on fast-break points to help key its win. For the first time this year, the Aztecs led wire-to-wire, building a pair of 13-point cushions in the second quarter, including a advantage on a jumper by senior Ahjalee Harvey (Mountain View, Calif.) with 3:40 remaining before intermission. The Titans responded with a Samantha Logan three-pointer and a basket by Dhanyel Johnson to cut the deficit to single digits before Fort nailed a jumper with just over a minute left in the period to give the contest its score at halftime. SDSU held CSUF in check throughout the third quarter, fashioning a lead on another basket by Fort with 10 seconds elapsed in the fourth period. The Titans threatened to make a game of it at this juncture, reeling off nine straight points, capped a Dani Craig three-pointer, to narrow the gap to with 4:43 remaining in the contest. However, the Aztecs kept the visitors off the scoreboard for the rest of the afternoon, as CSUF missed six field goals down the stretch and committed four turnovers. Meanwhile, Fort fittingly notched six of the game's final nine points to account for the margin of victory. In addition to Fort's performance, SDSU received seven points from sophomore Geena Gomez (Huntington Beach, Calif.) during a crucial 9-2 Aztec run in the second quarter, while Harvey and fellow classmate Deidra Smith (Aurora, Colo.) grabbed six rebounds apiece. Last Game Recap - CSUN - Nov. 14, 2017 With its senior class leading the way, San Diego State women s basketball held off a late fourth-quarter comeback attempt by CSUN and beat the Matadors, 58-55, Tuesday night in Viejas Arena. For the first time since the season, the Aztecs open the season 2-0, making an outstanding 23 3-pointers over that time (11 tonight). The Matadors, picked to finish second in the Big West this season, fall to 0-2. Seniors Lexy Thorderson (17), McKynzie Fort (16) and Khalia Lark (13) combined to produce 79.3 percent of the team s total offense and nine of the team s 11 3-pointers. Lark was one rebound away from her first career double-double (9), making a pair of crucial free throws to help her team take the lead with nine seconds on the clock. Senior Geena Gomez dished out a career-high 10 assists, while junior Arantxa Gomez Ferrer blocked a pair of shots while grabbing five boards. SDSU blocked five shots in total, the most since the team blocked seven shots in the season finale against Colorado State. The first quarter was a battle for both teams, who each struggled offensively. San Diego State was 5-for-20 (25 percent) from the floor, and 2-for-9 from beyond the 3-point arc, while the Matadors shot 27.8 percent (5-for-18), making just one long ball on nine attempts. San Diego State s offense perked up a bit in the next frame. Freshman Najé Murray opened the period by putting in a layup and knocking down a trey, propelling SDSU to a lead 1:11 into the quarter. After CSUN took the lead, 18-17, two-and-a-half minutes in, Lark had an outstanding play, deking around a defender and lifting the ball into the basket 3:02 into the quarter to regain the lead. Fort tacked on another layup 22 seconds later for the margin. San Diego State continued its attack, out-scoring the Matadors, 10-4, to enter halftime with a lead. The Scarlet and Black continued to fire on all cylinders in the ensuing frame. Thorderson opened the period with a long ball and after CSUN matched that with one of their own, the Aztecs went on a tear with an 11-point run, including a pair of threes by Thorderson and one by Lark. Thorderson knocked down a fourth trey to end the quarter, a last-second three from the right side of the basket for the score after 30 minutes of play. But the fourth quarter saw CSUN display renewed vigor and buckle down defensively, limiting San Diego State to just one shot on 15 attempts, while shooting 6-for-14 on its own. After scoring nine unanswered points in the final half of the period, the Matadors were able to cut the margin to within one at But the Scarlet and Black shut out the Matadors from the 2:21 mark on, and Lark s pair of free throws with nine ticks on the clock sealed the Aztec victory. CSUN out-rebounded SDSU, 44-39, and had more assists, 18-15, second-chance points, 6-5, and fast-break points, 5-4. The teams had equal shooting percentages (32.8 percent), and each blocked five shots.
