LCU, who is preparing for their first season with postseason eligibility in NCAA Div. II, opens their exhibition season Saturday in Boston facing Fisher College followed with a meeting with three-time defending NCAA Division I University of Connecticut Monday in Hartford. The exhibition schedule will close Nov. 7 inside American Airlines Center in Dallas with LCU facing former Sooner Athletic Conference foe John Brown. They begin the regular season schedule on Nov. 13 at Colorado State - Pueblo. LOOKING BACK AT THE LAST SEASON The Lady Chaparrals went 21-7 overall last season and 15-3 in conference to finish with at least a share of the best Heartland Conference record for a second straight season (their second season in the conference). It was their final season without postseason eligibility and another year wondering how far they could have gone if postseason play was an option. LCU produced four All-Conference selections last season, with Kellyn Schneider claiming Defensive Player of the Year honors and Tess Bruffey garnering Freshman of the Year. WHO RETURNS Lubbock Christian University returns four starters from last season s squad, including leading scorer Haley Fowler (13.8 points a game). Returning from a redshirt season last season is Nicole Hampton and Kelsey Hoppel, who have combined for 2,258 points. Hoppel enters the season 15 points away from marking the third consecutive season a Lady Chaps player has eclipsed the 1,000-point mark. It was Hampton achieving the honor two season s ago, and Haley Burton capturing the achievement last season. WHO THEY LOST The one starter lost season was Haley Burton, who closed out a 122-game career (118 starts) with 1,328 points. Burton finished her career ranking third in threepointers (204) and assists (439) in program history. Last season, Burton completed the season with 184 assists for the fifth highest single-season mark in program history. In her four active playing seasons, Burton helped LCU combine for a overall record and a conference record. Incoming freshmen Bobbi Chitsey (Wall, Texas) and Olivia Robertson join transfer Allea Harris (Argyle, Texas) as the new kids on the LCU block. CHARITY LCU is consistently one of the nations leaders in free-throw shooting and this season should be no different. Nicole Hampton (91.7%), Kelsey Hoppel (90.5%) and Allison Szabo (86.8%) are a combined 597 for 659 (90.6%) from the line over their career. WALK DOWN MEMORY LANE Lady Chaps head coach Steve Gomez is 3-0 in games involving NCAA Div. I programs. Here is a look at those contests: Dec. 11, LCU 75 - Houston Baptist 72 Carolyn Manning recorded 20 points and LCU also received 17 points from Sierra Lovorn and 15 points from Jordan Hampton (11-for-13 from the free-throw line) to lead the Lady Chaps to a regular season win at Rip Griffin Center. It was HBU s first season playing a NCAA Div. I schedule. Nov. 9, LCU 71 - Texas Tech 65 No. 19 Lubbock Christian University used 22 points from Brittany Hampton and a rebound advantage to upset Texas Tech University at United Spirit Arena. Hampton scored 14 of her 22 points in the second half, and went 15-for-15 from the free-throw line, which would have been a school single-game record for free throws made without a miss if it had been a regular season game. LCU was 26-for-30 (86.7%) from the line in the game. They also received 15 points from Severyn Smith. Nov. 2, LCU 80 - Houston 73 Nicole Hampton produced a double-double (20 points and 15 rebounds) and Kelsey Hoppel produced 21 points leading to a exhibition victory over the University of Houston at Hofheinz Pavilion. Emily Pool added 14 points for LCU, who hit 41 percent from the field, nailed 11 three-pointers and outrebounded Houston The Coogs were held to 29 percent shooting. FAMILIARITY The opportunity to face the No.1 team in NCAA Div. I is unfamiliar grounds for most NCAA Div. II student-athletes. The key word was most. For LCU s Kellyn Schneider, it is a second go-around. Schneider was with Texas Tech when they prepared and faced then No.1 Baylor featuring Brittney Griner. LCU s only other active player with key Div. I experience is Allea Harris. As a freshman at Texas- Arlington, Harris received her first collegiate start against then-no.10 Oklahoma. WATCH THIS On Monday, Nov. 2, there is a watch party scheduled at the Rip Griffin Center for fans and students to attend to watch the LCU vs Connecticut contest. Doors open around 5 p.m. and the game tips off at 6 p.m. (Central). The game will be displayed on the videoboard inside and a limited amount of shirts will be given away to LCU students attending the event. throw double bonus after the fifth personal foul (team) and will reset at the start of the next frame. Previously, teams reach the one-and-one bonus after seven fouls and the double bonus after 10 fouls were committed. In the fourth and overtime periods, a full timeout will now result in the advancement of the ball to half court when under 59.9 seconds (similar to professional basketball). Additional notable rule changes were to post defense and music. Post defenders will now be allowed to place a forearm or open hand with a bend in the elbow on an offensive post player with the ball when there back is to the basket. For music, the NCAA is permitting bands or music to be played during any dead ball situation, not just during timeouts and intermissions. ABOUT FC The Fisher Falcons are an NAIA Division II program based in Boston and they are an independent program. At press time, no roster had been submitted by Fisher and they were seeking to finalize the roster, as injuries and multi-sport student-athletes (some players are still participating in in-season sports) were leaving uncertainty as to who would be on the active roster. The Falcons went 3-19 last season. They ranked 26th in the NAIA in rebounds per game (43). THE SERIES AGAINST FC No prior meetings. ABOUT UCONN The record speaks for itself. Three consecutive NCAA Div. I championships, with a combined record during the span. And the goal this season for the Huskies is to claim a fourth consecutive title and the 11th in program history. If they can complete the goal, seniors Breanna Stewart, Moriah Jefferson and Morgan Tuck will have won a national title in each season at UConn. In addition, UConn legendary head coach Geno Auriemma is a title away from passing John Wooden for most coaching titles. Like LCU, the Huskies return four starters from last season. Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis is the only primary starter from last season that is no longer on the squad. THE SERIES AGAINST UCONN There are no prior meetings. NAIA NATIONAL FINALIST 2006 NEW RULES With efforts to enhance the flow of the game, the NCAA Women s Basketball Rules Committee has some new rules the NCAA has implemented for the upcoming season. The biggest change is splitting the game into four, 10-minute quarters, turning away from 20-minute halves that have been the norm. Due to the quarter format, teams will be in the free

3 HEAD COACH STEVE GOMEZ AT LCU: 12th Season ( ) OVERALL: 12th Season ( ) PERSONAL HOMETOWN: Lubbock, Texas SPOUSE: Shawna CHILDREN: Hayden, Landon EDUCATION Lubbock Christian / 1988 COACHING EXPERIENCE Lubbock Cooper High School (7 seasons) LCU (12th season) GOMEZ S YEAR-BY-YEAR RESULTS COACHING STAFF ASSISTANT COACH: CALEB HENSON VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT COACH: VIC SELF GRADUATE ASSISTANT COACH: KAYCIE BOYLES STUDENT TRAINER: GABY BECKER In 10 seasons at the helm while an NAIA institution, the Lady Chaps made 10 consecutive trips to the NAIA Division I Women s Basketball National Championship tournament. Coach Gomez s arrival to the LCU women s basketball program has certainly changed the foundation of the program. In those 10 seasons at the helm, LCU posted a record under Gomez in the NAIA. As they moved into their transition to NCAA Div. II, the results have not changed. LCU went a remarkable 25-1 overall in and they completed the Heartland Conference with a perfect 20-0 mark for their first perfect conference record in program history. They followed in claiming Co-Heartland Conference Regular Season title honors after a 15-3 stretch in conference and a 21-7 overall season. In their final two seasons in the NAIA ( , ), LCU set program single-season win records in each of the seasons. The Lady Chaps went 31-4 in , setting a program single-season wins mark (31). The Lady Chaps won their first ever Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament title en route to their final trip to the NAIA National Championship tournament. In , LCU went 28-6 and made their second ever appearance in the Semifinals of the NAIA National Championship Tournament. They lost out to eventual national champions Oklahoma City to mark the second consecutive season in which they lost out to the team who would claim the title. LCU claimed their second Sooner Athletic Conference crown in program history, as they joined Oklahoma City as conference co-champions with a 21-1 record. They handed OCU their only loss of the season. LCU went in and marched into the Elite Eight for a third time in program history. The Lady Chaps, who finished third in the Sooner Athletic Conference, lost in the NAIA National Championship to evential national champion Azusa Pacific. LCU went in the season, which included a 13-9 finish in the Sooner Athletic Conference, and had their season come to an end in the National Tournament. The highlight of the season was an exhibition victory inside the United Spirit Arena against Texas Tech University. In , the Lady Chaps finished with a solid 27-7 record and made a trip to the Sweet Sixteen of the National Tournament following a second-place Sooner Athletic Conference season. Gomez chalked up a milestone during the season, becoming the all-time women s basketball wins leader at LCU. LCU had a memorable campaign, as the Lady Chaps made another voyage to the NAIA National Tournament. The Lady Chaps completed a season, which included a trip to the Elite Eight in the tournament for their second best finish in program history. In , Gomez led the Lady Chaps to a myriad of firsts in their near thirty year history. Lubbock Christian never left the top-10 in the NAIA National Poll, and set a school mark for wins in a season with 26, eclipsing the school mark of 23 they set the prior season. In addition, LCU made its fourth consecutive trip to the NAIA National Tournament, finishing in the Sweet Sixteen and most impressively, the Lady Chaps captured a share of the Sooner Athletic Conference regular season championship, becoming the first school from outside of the State of Oklahoma to do so in the thirty-one years since the conference was founded. In , Gomez s Lady Chaps enjoyed what was arguably at the time the best season in school history, as they finished with an overall record of 23-12, and made an unparalleled run at the NAIA National Tournament. Seeded sixth in their eight team bracket in the tournament, Gomez s girls proceeded to oust four of the top six teams in the nation and become the lowest seed ever to reach either the Fab Four or National Championship; appropriately enough, he was named the SAC s Coach of the Year. In his first season, Gomez s Lady Chaps went and finished fifth in the Sooner Athletic Conference. While this might appear to be an average year, big wins for the Lady Chaps and entry into the NAIA National Poll for the first time proved good enough for an at-large bid to the NAIA National Tournament: LCU women s first trip to the big dance. In his second season, the Lady Chaps were able to maintain that level of success. After getting off to the best conference start since joining the Sooner Athletic Conference at 6-2, LCU finished SAC play at 10-8, good enough for another fifth place finish, and for the second season in a row, Coach Gomez guided the Lady Chaps to the NAIA National Tournament. An LCU graduate, Gomez was a standout perimeter player for Coach John Copeland in the late 1980s, and to this day, he still holds the school record for career free throw percentage at.855. He graduated in 1988 with a Bachelor s of Science Degree in Mathematics and consistently used his degree to teach in the classroom while pursuing coaching on the sidelines. Gomez s career began at Lubbock Monterey High School where he served as an assistant coach in the men s basketball program from 1988 to In 1996, Gomez accepted the men s basketball head coaching position at Lubbock Cooper High School, where he remained until returning to Lubbock Christian University to take over the reigns of the Lady Chaps in During his seven seasons at Cooper, the basketball program broke new ground making the playoffs four times, managing the school s first state ranking, and capturing the Pirates only district championship in Gomez s final season. One of the main reasons Coach Gomez is so successful on the court is the support he receives off of it. Steve has been married to his wife Shawna for 25 years, and the couple has two children: Hayden and Landon.
