4 Andy Sharpe Head Men s Basketball Coach 5th Season at SAU Reinhardt (Ga,) (2002) Andy Sharpe enters into his fifth season as the head men s basketball coach at Southern Arkansas. Prior to his appointment at SAU, Sharpe served five years as head coach at NAIA-affiliated Martin Methodist College in Pulaski, Tenn. While at Martin Methodist, Sharpe turned that program into a national title contender as his RedHawks made three trips to the NAIA National Tournament, advancing to the Sweet Sixteen in his final season and as far as the Final Four in A three-time TranSouth Conference Coach of the Year and Don Meyer Award Winner (NAIA National Coach of the Year), Sharpe brings over 12 years of coaching experience to this year s Mulerider men s basketball team. 11 of those years have been spent as a head coach, in which Sharpe has compiled a career mark of for a.634 win percentage. Over the past two seasons, Sharpe has begun to turn the Muleriders into serious contenders in the Great American Conference as SAU has won 24 conference games and have finished in the top half of the standings each year as well. Overall in the past two seasons, Sharpe has guided the Muleriders to a record while also posting consecutive winning seasons for the first time since the and seasons. Last season, Sharpe s Muleriders went overall record and finished tied for fourth in the GAC with a 13-9 mark in the league. The 17 overall wins set a new program record for wins in a season since SAU joined NCAA Division II prior to the season. Additionally, the 13 conference wins were the most in the DII era. As far as post-season play is concerned, Sharpe has led the Muleriders to the GAC Tournament all four years and has advanced the team to the semi-finals twice with opening round wins in and So far at SAU, Sharpe has coached six all-conference players including GAC Defensive Player of the Year/All-GAC First-Team selection, Alre k Brown and GAC Freshman of the Year, CJ Elkins. During his five-year tenure at Martin Methodist, Sharpe led the RedHawks to a (.748) record, claiming two TranSouth Conference regular season and tournament championships. Sharpe also coached five All-America players while at Martin Methodist, including 5-10 guard James Justice, a two-time first-team honoree. Justice drew national fame when he was the Dark Horse Dunker at the 2012 Denny s Slam Dunk championship at the State Farm College Slam Dunk and Three-Point championships in New Orleans, which was in conjunction with the NCAA men s basketball championship tournament. During his final two seasons at Martin Methodist, Sharpe s teams spent 21 consecutive weeks ranked in the top 10 of the national poll. In the season, Sharpe s squad set school records with a 34-3 finish, and finished ranked sixth in the country. Their conference season championship was the first-ever for the school and they opened the season with a school-best 16-0 start. Sharpe s team finished on the year, while the squad was and ranked as high as 16th. In Sharpe s first year at Martin Methodist in , he guided the team to a 25-8 mark, an appearance in the national tournament, and to a final season ranking of No. 11. Prior to arriving at Martin Methodist, Sharpe began his collegiate coaching career in as an assistant at Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, Ga., before taking over the program the following season and serving two years as head coach, compiling a (.565) record. He inherited a 4-28 program his first season and improved them to in , and then set the school record for wins with a mark the next year, advancing the team to its first Southern States Athletic Conference tournament championship game, and being named the SSAC coach of the year. Sharpe received his B.S. in business administration in 2002 from Reinhardt (Ga.) University and a M.Ed. in physical education from North Georgia College & State University in He is married to the former Mandy Bonifacious of Tunnel Hill, Ga., and they have a son, Asher, and two daughters, Ava and Addie-Jayne. 5 David Anderson Asst. Men s Basketball Coach 5th Season at SAU Martin Methodist (Tenn.) (2008) David Anderson enters his fifth season as assistant coach for the Mulerider basketball team. Prior to coming to SAU, he served two seasons ( ) as assistant coach at NAIA-affiliated Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College under current SAU head coach Andy Sharpe. In his time at SAU, Anderson has helped turn the men s basketball program around into a serious contender within the Great American Conference. In each of the first four years at SAU, Anderson has helped the Muleriders better their overall and conference records including posting a overall record and a 13-9 conference mark this past season. The 17 wins set a record for most wins in a season since SAU joined NCAA Division II prior to the season; while the 13 conference wins were the most at SAU in the DII era. In his two years prior to SAU while at Martin Methodist, Anderson helped guide the RedHawks to back-to-back TranSouth Conference tournament and regular season championships. The RedHawks advanced to the final four of the NAIA national tournament in 2011 and the Sweet 16 in In those two years the RedHawks compiled an impressive mark highlighted by a record-breaking season of 34-3 in while spending 21 consecutive weeks ranked in the top 10 of the national poll. Anderson s tenure as assistant at Martin Methodist was capped off by 5-10 guard James Justice claiming the Denny s Slam Dunk championship at the State Farm college slam dunk and three-point championships in New Orleans in conjunction with the NCAA men s basketball championship tournament. Justice, a two-time NAIA first team All-American and TranSouth Conference player of the year, was entered in the contest by winning the Dark Horse Dunker voting competition. Before coaching at Martin Methodist, Anderson coached in at Nashville Christian High School as assistant under legendary coach Charlie Anderson, no relation. Charlie, with over 1,000 career wins, was a longtime coach at Aquinas College in Nashville where he led the team to the 1991 NJCAA national championship. He is also a member of the Junior College Sports Hall of Fame, Tennessee Junior College Hall of Fame, Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, and TSSAA Hall of Fame. Ted Waller Volunteer Assistant Coach 7th Season at SAU Ted Waller enters into his seventh season as a volunteer assistant coach for the men s basketball team at Southern Arkansas. A former Mulerider basketball player, Waller returned to his alma mater after a lengthy and successful run as a prep basketball coach at Village, Emerson, and Magnolia High Schools. During a career that spanned 25 years, Waller guided his teams to four state championships while also averaging over 20 wins per year and amassing a winning percentage of 75%. 11 times Waller was named the District Coach of the Year, and four times he was honored as the Arkansas Basketball Coach of the Year. Additionally, Waller received the Lowell Manning Award as the Arkansas Coach of the Year for all sports. Capping his list of coaching accomplishments, Waller was named to the Arkansas High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame in Outside of coaching, Waller has served as superintendent of Genoa Central School District (Texarkana, Ark.) and as the Director of Guidance and Counseling at Haynesville High School (Haynesville, La.). Currently, Waller is the Director of Guidance and Counseling at Columbia Christian School (Magnolia, Ark.). Waller is married to Barbara Morgan Waller and has three children: Trey and his wife Lana, Kory and his wife Roxie, and Kelli Sawyer and her husband Tom. Waller also has eight grandchildren: Tara, Tyler, Hayden, Hali, Landon, Jack, Kate, and Anna. While at Nashville Christian, Anderson was also assistant coach of the middle school team under Head Coach Chris Coleman. They led the squad to the Greater Athletic Conference tournament championship while going undefeated in the conference with an overall record of Prior to coaching, Anderson played guard for Martin Methodist from and played his last season under former Martin Methodist head coach and current Southern Arkansas head coach Andy Sharpe. He received his B.B.A. in management from the school, and is currently working towards an M.B.A. at SAU. Anderson is a native of Nashville, Tenn., and a 2004 alum of Nashville Christian School. While playing for the Eagles, he helped lead the team to the 2003 Region 5A tournament championship and the 2004 District 10A tournament championship. For his efforts, he was named the 2003 Region 5A tournament MVP and received all-tournament honors in the 2003 and 2004 District 10A tournament. Anderson scored over 1,000 points in his career at Nashville Christian.
