The Lady Griz, like the Bulldogs, played the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Seattle, Wash., as part of the Oklahoma City Region. No. 13 seed Montana fell to No. 4 seed University of Pittsburgh in the first round. Gonzaga, who won its first round game, upsetting No. 5 seed Xavier, ultimately dropped a heartbreaking decision to Pittsburgh in the second round. Montana is off to a shaky start in at 2-5. The Grizzlies two victories of the season are a win over University of Denver and a victory over Great Falls. ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST MONTANA: Gonzaga University defeated the University Montana by six last December, 69-63, snapping the Lady Griz 21-game home-court winning streak. Courtney Vandersloot had 22 points and eight assists in the contest, while Aussie Kelly Bowen grabbed 10 rebounds. Montana holds the 17-9 lead in the all-time series but Gonzaga has won the last two. The last time the Zags hosted the Lady Griz in the McCathey Athletic Center was Nov. 11, 2007 with GU grabbing the victory in front of 1,838 fans. SCOUTING THE VIKINGS: Portland State University went a year ago and narrowly missed out on making the NCAA Tournament. The Vikings lost to the University of Montana in the Big Sky Conference tournament championship game, but were selected to play in the Women s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT). It was PSU s first-ever post-season appearance at the Division I level. The Vikings season came to an end in the second round of the WNIT after falling to in-state rival Oregon State University. In Big Sky Conference action, Portland State finished 14-2 for its best record ever. The Vikings have started off the season with a 4-5 record and come into their contest with Gonzaga having won two-straight. ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST PORTLAND STATE: Gonzaga University last played Portland State University Dec. 14, 2008, defeating the Vikings in the McCarthey Athletic Center. Heather Bowman registered a double-double in the victory, scoring 20 points and grabbing 14 rebounds, both game-highs. Claire Raap added 12 points for Gonzaga, eclipsing her then-career-high by two points. The Bulldogs lead the all-time series with the Vikings 9-6 and have won five of the last six meetings. Gonzaga did however lose to Portland State the last time it played in Portland. The Vikings took a victory over the Zags on Nov. 25, WHO WE LOST: Gonzaga University had arguably its best season in finishing with a 27-7 overall record and making it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Don t fret, the Bulldogs only lost two seniors from that squad, and returns 12 letterwinners, including four starters. The only players lost to graduation were Jami (Bjorklund) Schaefer and Amanda Brown - and if you look down the bench Brown is still there - this year as a Director of Basketball Operations. WHAT WE RETURN: We return a lot. As a team, Gonzaga University returns 95 percent of its scoring (2,404 of 2,534 points) and rebounding (1329 of 1398 rebounding) and 94 percent of its total field goals made (892 of 947 field goals). WHO IS BACK: Nearly everybody is back from Gonzaga University s team that went 27-7 a season ago. Headlining the group is senior Heather Bowman and junior Courtney Vandersloot. Bowman finished 20th in the nation in scoring as a junior at 19.1 points per game, while Vandersloot, the reigning West Coast Conference Player of the Year, was third in the nation in assists per game at 7.5. The Zags also welcome back senior Vivian Frieson, an All-WCC performer in , junior Janelle Bekkering, who played for the Canadian National Team this summer and garnered WCC All-Tournament honors as a sophomore, and sophomore Kelly Bowen, a member of the All-WCC freshman squad. WCC PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Gonzaga University women s basketball senior Heather Bowman has been named Co-West Coast Conference Player of the Week announced by the conference office Monday. Bowman shares the honor with Jontelle Smith of Saint Mary s College. This is the third time in four weeks a Bulldog has been tabbed WCC Player of the Week as junior Courtney Vandersloot and senior Vivian Frieson have also been honored this season. Bowman, a forward from Spokane, paced Gonzaga to a 3-0 week by averaging 19.7 points, 5.7 rebounds, 1.7 steals and 1.0 block per contest, while shooting a blistering 67.9 percent from the field and 87.5 percent at the charity stripe West Coast Conference Players of the Week Dec. 7: Heather Bowman, Gonzaga University Nov. 30: Miranda Aiym, Pepperdine & Alex Cowling, Loyola Marymount Nov. 23: Vivian Frieson, Gonzaga University Nov. 16: Courtney Vandersloot, Gonzaga University A DIFFERENT LEADER: Gonzaga University women s basketball has played nine games this season and has had a different leading scorer in seven of the nine games, including the first six. It was the seventh time a team had repeated as conference champions in the 20-year history of WCC women s play. In 2005, Gonzaga became only the second school in WCC history to run the table in league play as the Bulldogs finished the 2005 season 14-0, joining only the 1997 University of Portland Pilots as undefeated regular-season champions in the 20-year history of the league. Graves was also part of that run as an assistant coach at Portland. Along the way Gonzaga ran off a nation-leading 23-game win streak and cracked both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Top 25 polls reaching as high as No. 23. Graves earned his second WCC Coach of the Year honor and was named the WBCA Region VIII Coach of the Year as Gonzaga finished the season 28-4 and advanced to the second round of the Women s NIT, the second-straight post-season appearance for Gonzaga under Graves. The Bulldogs also had several firsts in 2005 under Graves watchful eye as Shannon Mathews became the first Gonzaga player to earn WCC Player of the Year honors and the first to earn All-America honors with an honorable mention nod from the Associated Press. Graves was named the fourth head coach in the NCAA Division I history of the program on April 11, 2000, and it s no surprise where he s taken the program in eight seasons. The turnaround began in 2002 when the Bulldogs posted an record, the first time the club had hit double digits in the win column since That success continued in 2003 as Gonzaga posted a winning record for the first time since 1994 when the Bulldogs advanced to the WNIT. Gonzaga posted 18 wins, at the time the second highest total in the school s NCAA Division I history, and received a bye to the WCC Tournament semifinals. For the efforts of his team Graves was named the West Coast Conference Coach of the Year for the first time in his six years as a head coach in the league. The Bulldogs also had one player named to the WCC first team and two additional players earn honorable mention All-WCC honors. In 2004, Gonzaga continued to make improvements under Graves as the team again posted 18 wins and a second-place WCC finish. The Bulldogs advanced to their second WCC Tournament championship game and were awarded a bid to the Women s NIT after falling to Loyola Marymount University, 61-58, in the WCC title game. Dating back to his years as an assistant coach at Portland, Graves has now coached 27 All-West Coast Conference performers, seven WCC Players of the Year, five All-Americans, two WCC Defender s of the Year, two WCC Newcomer s of the Year and 23 WCC All-Tournament selections. 6
