Hofstra, coming off a 4-8, 2-6 season in 2008, has an all-time record of The Pride has posted 42 winning seasons and three.500 seasons. Hofstra returns 58 players from last year s team including 40 lettermen and 20 starters. It is the largest group of returning starters since the 2005 team had the same amount during their 7-4 season. THE PRIDE IN THE FCS: Hofstra has posted a (.598) record since becoming a member of the Football CAA FOOTBALL: With the game at Richmond on September 19, the Pride kicked off their third season in CAA Football. The CAA absorbed the Atlantic 10 Football Conference in Hofstra was a member of the Atlantic 10 Football Conference from 2001 through All of Hofstra s athletic teams have competed in the CAA since The CAA, which has placed three teams in the FCS Championship Game three straight years, captured three national titles since 2003 including Richmond s championship run last year. The CAA, currently with seven of the top 25 teams in the FCS Top 25, is recognized as the top FCS conference in the country. The two teams last met in 2008 at Shuart Stadium on Long Island with a Roger Williams field goal with three seconds remaining giving the Pride a victory. 2 2003 Rhode Island (A) Hofstra (H) Hofstra (A) Rhode Island (H) Hofstra (A) Hofstra (H) THE LAST TIME - HOFSTRA-URI - SEPTEMBER 20 IN HEMPSTEAD: Hofstra freshman placekicker Roger Williams drilled a 38-yard-field goal with three seconds remaining in the contest to give the Pride a CAA Football victory over Rhode Island at James M. Shuart Stadium. Williams, a walk-on, came off the bench in the second half in place of freshman starter Brian Hanly and kicked two field goals, including the game-winner in the waning seconds of regulation, to lead the Pride to victory. Pride quarterback Cory Christopher sliced through the Rams defense with his arm and his legs, completing 25 of his 33 attempts for 265 yards while rushing for an additional 97 yards. Freshman tailback Brock Jackolski added a career-high 144 yards on 13 carries in just his second collegiate contest. With the scored tied at 20 in the final minute and no timeouts, Christopher engineered an eight-play, 58-yard drive in just 44 seconds to facilitate Williams attempt. Christopher completed two passes to Everette Benjamin before connecting on a 12- yard pass to Aaron Weaver as the Pride advanced into Rams territory. Christopher punctuated the drive by finding Ottis Lewis for 24 yards to the URI 21. After a spike to stop the clock, Williams came on and converted his second field goal of the game to give the Pride the lead. Williams would kick-off to the Rams and, after a total return of 57 yards by two URI players, would assist on the final tackle to end the game. Rhode Island mounted a comeback of its own, marching 54 yards down the field on its second-to-last possession. Rams tailback Anthony Ferrer pushed through for a 21-yard gain and then bullied his way in from the 1-yard line one play later to tie the game at 20 with 44 seconds left. But Louis Feinstein hooked his extra point attempt, keeping the score tied at 20. Hofstra scored 14 points in the final quarter, starting with Christopher s 1-yard quarterback sneak for a touchdown with 8:21 left. Head Coach Dave Cohen elected to go for the twopoint conversion and Christopher delivered by finding Weaver for a successful conversion and a lead for the Pride. Jackolski, who was playing in just his second game, nearly made it a two-score game five minutes later. The underclassman busted through a hole, completed a spin move and raced 64 yards downfield before getting hauled down just inches from the goal line. But the Pride couldn t punch it in and had to settle for a 33-yard field goal from Williams to boost the Pride lead to with 3:27 to play. The Rams came out strong, breaking open the scoring just 1:50 into the contest when Jimmy Hughes blasted through a hole for a 37-yard rushing touchdown. Hughes would lead the Rams ground game with 49 yards on 11 carries. The Pride got on the scoreboard with 5:31 remaining in the first half following Hanly s 21-yard field goal. Benjamin, who added 44 yards on nine carries, gave the Pride its first lead just over a minute later, recording a 6-yard touchdown run to give Hofstra a 9-7 halftime lead. Senior defensive back Nick Altomare set up that short scoring drive, forcing Hughes to fumble after a ferocious hit. Anthony Vernaglia recovered the loose ball, giving possession to the Pride at the Rams 21-yard line. Vernaglia finished with a teamhigh six tackles, including five solo stops, and a sack. Altomare also added an interception, one of three turnovers the Pride generated. Just the seventh head coach in the history of Pride football, Cohen came to Hofstra in December 2005 after serving as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at the University of Delaware from 2002 through He also served as defensive line and linebackers coach at Delaware from 1994 through 1998 before becoming the associate head coach/defensive coordinator at Fordham University from 1999 through The Long Island native, who was a two-year starter at LIU-C.W. Post, began his coaching career at the University at Albany in 1988 as linebackers and strength coach. In 1990 Cohen became linebackers and defensive line coach at Lafayette College and held that position for four seasons. After the departure of assistant head coach/defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Mike Elko, tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator Kevin Baumann and defensive line coach Malik Hall, Cohen promoted offensive run game coordinator/offensive line coach Bill Durkin to assistant head coach/offensive run game coordinator/offensive line coach; and defensive ends coach Kevin Mapp to defensive line coach/recruiting coordinator. CHRISTOPHER NOTCHES SEASON-HIGH COMPLETIONS: Senior quarterback Cory Christopher equaled his season-high with 22 completions and passed for 223 yards and a touchdown in the Pride s loss to Maine. His 4-yard TD pass to Aaron Weaver closed the Pride deficit to late in the fourth quarter. He now has posted a 56% or better completion percentage in all six games this season. Christopher also rushed five times for 26 yards against the Black Bears. Christopher, who completed nine of 16 passes for 57 yards against, completed 17 of 27 passes for 188 yards and one touchdown at Western Michigan. At Richmond, he connected on 17 of 26 passes for 172 yards for a season-high 65.4 completion percentage. On September 12, he completed 22 of 36 passes for a career-high 321 yards and three touchdowns in the Pride s win at Bryant. It was the Miami native s first 300-yard passing game. BONUS: Senior linebacker and co-captain Luke led the Pride with nine total tackles including a game-high six solo stops, in the Pride s loss to Maine. He tallied nine tackles (6 solos) against James Madison and eight tackles (5 solos), one sack, 1.5 TFLs and one forced fumble at Western Michigan on September 26. Bonus, who tallied seven stops at Richmond, recorded a season-high 11 tackles, including nine solos, against Bryant on September 12. He now has a team-high 49 tackles on the season. MAYSONET: Freshman Miguel Maysonet had a breakout game with a career-high 95 yards on seven carries (13.8 ypr) in the Pride s loss to Maine. The newcomer from Riverhead, NY almost tripled his previous best outing of 33 yards at Western Michigan. The 95 yards are also a Hofstra rushing team-high this season. WEAVER TOPS 100; CLOSES IN ON 1,000: Junior receiver Aaron Weaver, with six catches, went over the 100-reception mark in his career against Maine last Saturday. He now has 103 catches for 981 yards in his three-year Hofstra career. He caught three passes for 21 yards against James Madison. Weaver recorded his first 100-yard receiving game of the season and the second of his career at Western Michigan on September 26. His 43-yard TD grab from Christopher gave the Pride a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter in Kalamazoo. His eight catches were one off his career best, set against Richmond in Weaver has 31 receptions for 362 yards on the season.

5 NELSON TOPS 1,000; CLOSES IN ON 100: Junior receiver Anthony Nelson climbed over the 1,000-receiving yards mark in his career with his six-catch, 60-yard performance against Maine last week. He now has 97 receptions for 1,033 yards in his Hofstra career. STAT SHEET DOMINANCE: Despite outgaining the Black Bears , and picking up 32 first downs to Maine s 11, the Pride fell to Maine on Homecoming at Shuart Stadium last Saturday. Hofstra s 533 yards of offense against Maine was the Pride s most since 2005 against New Hampshire in a loss. Hofstra also posted 533 yards that day. TURNOVERS WILL COST YOU: The Pride entered the Maine game with nine turnovers (2 interceptions and seven fumbles) on the season and almost equaled that total with five interceptions thrown and two fumbles. They results in 10 Black Bear points. The five interceptions equals a school record set against Bucknell in 1990, and New Hampshire in 2003 and MOVING BETWEEN THE GOAL LINES: Hofstra s 32 first downs ( ) last week against Maine was three short of tying the school mark set in 1997 against both Lehigh and Youngstown State. The Pride offense ran 85 plays in the contest. BIG RUSHING NUMBERS: Hofstra rushed for a season-high 293 yards against Maine as Miguel Maysonet ran for a careerhigh 95 yards as did quarterback Steve Probst with 91 yards on 12 carries. CRAZY SIXES: Sophomore receiver Christian Dennis was one of three Pride receivers with six receptions against the Black Bears of Maine last week. Dennis tallied a career-high 80 yards. Junior Anthony Nelson posted six catches for 60 yards and classmate Aaron Weaver added six for 53 and a touchdown catch. MELENDEZ NOTCHES CAREER-HIGH: Sophomore linebacker Greg Melendez posted a career-high 12 tackles, including eight solo stops, and had one forced fumble in the Pride s loss at FBS Western Michigan. His previous best was 10, achieved against both Maine and Massachusetts in Melendez followed up his WMU performance with a seven-tackle, one fumble recovery game against James Madison. He posted another solid game with nine total tackles, including four solos, with an interceptions and one tackle for a loss against Maine. He now has 42 tackles on the year. IN THE RIGHT PLACE: Senior Ray McDonough recorded four total tackles and had two fumble recoveries against Maine last Saturday. BENJAMIN RETURNS AND TOP 1,000: Junior running back Everette Benjamin returned to the line-up against James Madison on October 3, after missing the previous two games, and led the Pride with 58 yards on 12 carries (4.8 ypr) and picked up several key first downs on fourth down plays. In the process, he also went over the 1,000-yard rushing mark in his career. He added 43 yards on 10 carries last week and now has 236 career carries for 1,050 yards. Despite missing the two games, he is third on the team in rushing with 160 yards on 33 carries. THREE-WAY PLAYER JACKOLSKI: Sophomore Brock Jackolski continues to play at three positions for the Pride and posted his best single game kickoff return effort against JMU. He returned three kickoffs for 100 yards. Jackolski also caught one pass for 17 yards and rushed twice for two yards against the Dukes. He posted his best defensive effort at Western Michigan posting eight tackles including seven solos. He also rushed five times for 21 yards, caught one pass for 11 yards, Jackolski also had three kickoff returns for 65 yards against WMU. EDMOND: Sophomore safety Chris Edmond, who sat out the Western Michigan game with an injury, posted six tackles last week against Maine. He returned to the line-up to lead the Pride with 11 tackles against James Madison on October 3. He recorded nine tackles at Richmond on September 19. The Freeport, New York native, who tallied 71 tackles, including 13 tackles against Maine and Massachusetts, in 2008, has 37 stops on the season. HUDEEN: Sophomore linebacker Basim Hudeen posted a career-best 11 tackles (8 solos) at Western Michigan. He topped his previous best of 10 stops at Bryant on September 12, Hudeen added six tackles and was in on a sack against James Madison, and added six stops against Maine last week. He is second on the Pride defense with 45 tackles in GRECO FROM WALK-ON TO STARTER: Senior kicker Henry Greco, the former 2008 walk-on, posted career-best numbers by booting two field goals and making four of five extra point attempts at Bryant on September 12. After adding a field goal and three extra-points last week against JMU and two points against Maine, he leads the team in scoring with 27 points on five-of-nine field goals and 12 of 13 extra points. OG JIMMY MANGIERO: Senior offensive lineman Jimmy Mangiero, who had his eight knee surgery last year, played in just one game (Rhode Island) in Mangiero, who was expected to return to a starting role in 2008, was sidelined until the URI game with the knee. SIDARAS HURT: Red-shirt freshman quarterback Joe Sidaras is expected to miss 3-5 weeks with an injury sustained in the Richmond game on September 19. He made his Hofstra debut against Stony Brook on September 5, relieving Cory Christopher in specific situations, and completing his only pass attempt for eight yards. He also rushed four times for five yards. LOOK WHAT I FOUND: Pride junior tackle Brian Frederick moved into the elite group of scoring linemen against Stony Brook on September 5 when he recovered a Joe Sidaras fourth quarter fumble in the end zone for the Pride touchdown. HOFSTRA S NEW STARTERS: In stark contrast to last season when many first-time starters saw action, the 2009 Pride has just four players who made their first start in a Hofstra uniform in the season opener against Stony Brook. Junior tight end Jose Cruz (Johnstown, PA), who transferred to Hofstra last winter from the University of Akron, had two catches for 17 yards against Stony Brook. Junior cornerback Garrett Heron (South Orange, NJ), who played in all 11 games on special teams and as a reserve defensive back as a redshirt freshman in 2007, sat out last season with an injury. STONY BROOK: Reserve quarterback Joe Sidaras ran for one touchdown, offensive lineman Brian Frederick fell on a fumble in the end zone and the Pride defense held the Seawolves to 234 yards of offense, including just 46 on the ground, to lead Hofstra to a non-conference victory over Stony Brook in the season opener for both teams at James M. Shuart Stadium. A crowd of 7,160, the 15th largest home crowd in school history, watched Hofstra win for the 24th time in its last 27 season openers as well as the 13th time against Stony Brook without a loss.

14 Hofstra starting quarterback Cory Christopher passed for 149 yards and added another 44 on the ground while Sidaras completed his only pass attempt and scored on a 2-yard run on Hofstra s opening possession. Junior receiver Aaron Weaver caught a team-high five passes for 39 yards. Sophomore running back Brock Jackolski rushed for 26 yards on four carries while junior Everette Benjamin added 25 yards on four carries to help the Pride ground attack. The Pride took the opening kickoff and marched 72-yards on 10 plays with Sidaras carrying the ball to paydirt just 4:25 into the contest. Senior Henry Greco s point-after gave Hofstra a 7-0 lead. After holding Stony Brook on their first possession, Hofstra got the ball with good field position when the Seawolves punt snap sailed over the head of Drew Evangelista as the Pride took over on the Stony Brook 30-yard line. Seven plays later, Greco, a former walk-on, kicked the first field goal of his career from 32 yards for a 10-0 lead with 4:23 to play in the first quarter. While the Pride squandered two more scoring opportunities in the second quarter, missing field goal opportunities from 34 and 47 yards, the Hofstra defense shut down the Seawolves, holding their visitors to just 10 yards of offense in the first quarter and 44 in the first half. Stony Brook put three points on the scoreboard on heir first drive of the second half, as quarterback Michael Coulter engineered a 13-play, 63-yards drive capped by a Wes Skiffington 30-yard field goal. Coulter hooked up with receiver Matt Brevi three times in the drive for 45 yards. While the Seawolves showed some signs of life in the opening drive, the Pride defense held their opponents to three-and-out on their next two possessions in the third quarter. Hofstra mounted another scoring drive at the end of the third and into the fourth quarter, that almost ended in disappointment. The Pride, who jumped out to a halftime lead, improved to 2-0 on the season while Bryant fell to 1-1. Christopher completed 22 of 36 passes for 321 yards and tossed scoring passes to juniors Everette Benjamin and Anthony Nelson, and sophomore Christian Dennis. Nelson led the Pride with six catches for 80 yards including a 9-yard scoring grab in the second quarter. Dennis, who took the opening kickoff 86 yards for the touchdown, caught one pass in the contest for a 45-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. Freshman Miguel Maysonet rushed five times for 18 yards including an 8-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Kwabena Asante led the Pride ground game with 60 yards on eight carries. The Spiders improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the CAA while the Pride fell to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play. Richmond quarterback Eric Ward completed 12 of 16 passes for 165 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Spiders, who recorded their third straight victory over the Pride to take a 4-3 lead in the series. The Pride posted 329 yards on the night. Hofstra, playing without starting fullback Everette Benjamin for the second straight game, racked up 140 yards on the ground with sophomore Kwabena Asante posting a team-high 50 yards on 10 carries and freshman Miguel Maysonet adding 33 yards on five carries. The Pride rebounded from a mistake-laden game last week to impress the partisan crowd of 16,116 at Waldo Stadium. After the Pride offense moved the ball into Bronco territory on their first possession but was forced to punt, the Hofstra defense stood tall on their first test of the contest. Western, taking over on its own 20 drove 77 yards to the Pride three-yard line in 13 plays behind the arm of Hiller, who completed his first five passes. But the Pride stopped the Broncos on third and fourth and-one plays from the three to take over on downs as Greg Melendez and Luke Bonus came up with the big tackle. It looked like it would be a scoreless first quarter but on Western's next possession after a Hofstra punt, Hiller, from his own 28, was picked off by Pride safety Ray McDonough at the Hofstra 46.
