The victory snapped a four-game road losing skid. - The Pride is in regular season play since the start of the 1997 season. Hofstra has posted an record over the last 138 regular season games. ON THIS DAY IN HOFSTRA FOOTBALL HISTORY: Quarterback Rocky Butler passed for 215 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for 122 yards and another touchdown to lead the 14th-ranked Pride to a victory over Maine at Shuart Stadium. Receiver Kahmal Roy had four catches for 106 yards and three touchdowns as Hofstra rang up 423 yards on offense. Roy, currently an assistant coach on the Pride coaching staff, had TD grabs of 27, 31 and 30 yards. Defensive back Jason Howard posted 13 tackles including 12 solo stops while Doug Shanahan posted 11 stops and recorded a 27-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown. The Pride has played six games on September 22 since Hofstra is a perfect 6-0 in those games. In addition to the 2001 contest, Hofstra downed Wilkes (40-0) in 1956, Springfield (13-10) in 1962, Boston State (23-6) in 1972, Seton Hall (21-20) in 1973, and USMMA (27-13) in HOFSTRA-RHODE ISLAND SERIES: Saturday's game is the 22nd meeting between Hofstra and Rhode Island in a series that began in Hofstra holds a 15-6 series lead but the series is tied at 3-3 since the Pride joined the Atlantic 10/CAA in The Pride is 6-4 against the Rams in Kingston. Shuart Stadium. URI quarterback Derek Cassidy completed seven of 12 passes for 170 yards and one touchdown, while receiver Shawn Leonard posted four receptions for 120 yards to lead the Rams. Hofstra running backs Terry Crenshaw ( ) and Kareem Huggins ( ) combined for 178 of the Pride's 267 yards on the day.

2 Rhode Island scored on its first possession, going 80 yards in 13 plays with Cassidy calling his own number on a 1-yard run for the touchdown with 9:26 to play in the first quarter. The extra-point snap was high and the rush attempt failed. The big play in the Rams drive was a 14-yard run by running back Tim Allen on a third-and-four-play early in the series. After Hofstra punted the ball away on its first possession, the Rams took over on their 49-yard line. On the third play in the series, facing a third-and-14, the Pride were whistled for pass interference on Tim Allen, giving the Rams a first down at the Hofstra 41. On the next play, Tolbert Evans rushed for 35 yards to the Pride 6-yard line. Jimmy Hughes rushed the final six yards for the touchdown. Colin Gallagher's extra-point was good and the Rams had a 13-0 lead with 5:35 to play in the quarter. On Hofstra's next possession, Crenshaw fumbled at the Pride 31 as tackle Chad Waltrip stripped Crenshaw of the ball and safety Adrian Owen recovered at the 30. On the Rhode Island's first play from scrimmage, Cassidy hit Evans with a 30-yard touchdown pass. Gallagher's extra-point gave the Rams a 20-0 advantage with 4:49 to play in the first quarter. The Pride scored 10 points in the second quarter as Crenshaw led a seven-play, 58-yard drive by rushing five times for 30 yards, including a 2-yard scoring run, and caught a pass for 19 yards in the series. Rob Zarrilli's extra-point closed the deficit to 20-7 with 7:14 to play in the half. Zarrilli would then boot a 32-yard field goal with 49 seconds to play in the half, after an eight-play, 61-yard drive, to close to at halftime. After allowing 167 yards in the first quarter, the Pride defense stepped up to hold the Rams to -4 yards in the second quarter. Hofstra inched closer on its opening possession of the second half. Starting out on their own 32, the Pride marched 53 yards in 15 plays before settling for a Zarrilli 32-yard field goal with 9:06 to play in the third quarter. The Hofstra defense stood tall once again, holding the Rams to 53 yards in the period and two three-and-out possessions in their two series. In the fourth quarter URI had a chance to add some insurance points, moving the ball to the Pride 7-yard line for a fourth down play. After taking a penalty and moving the ball back to the 12-yard line, Gallagher missed a 29-yard field goal. Hofstra mounted a late drive, starting at their own 28 with 2:07 to play. Quarterback Dennis Davis ( , 106, 0TD), who was making his first start of the season, hit the A-10's receiving yards leader Shaine Smith for a 12-yard gain. It was Smith's first catch of the contest. On the next play, Davis found tight end Marquis Bonds in the middle of the field for a 25-yard pick-up to the URI 35-yard line. After an incompletion and a 4-yard run by Huggins, Davis could not complete third and fourth down passes to Smith and the Rams took over on downs and ran out the clock. Hofstra freshman linebacker Luke Bonus had an outstanding game, posting a career-best 15 tackles, 4 1/2 tackles for losses, forced and recovered a fumble, and had one sack. 4 GUTIERREZ NAMED CAA DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Hofstra linebacker Stanley Gutierrez has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Football Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in Saturday s Pride victory at Albany, the conference announced Monday. Gutierrez, a senior from Freeport, NY, topped his previous career-high of 12 tackles set on September 8 against Furman with a 15-tackle performance against the Great Danes of Albany to help boost the 19th-ranked Pride s record to 2-0 on the season. He tallied six solo stops and nine assists, two tackles for losses of 4 yards, and picked off his first pass of the season and the third of his career in the fourth quarter. Gutierrez and the Pride defense, which leads the league and ranks 15th nationally in total defense in the FCS, limited the Great Danes to just 225 yards on the evening and only 94 on the ground. The CAA also announced that New Hampshire senior quarterback Ricky Santos was named the Offensive Player of the Week, William & Mary sophomore kicker Brian Pate was selected the CAA Special Teams Player of the Week, and Delaware red-shirt freshman cornerback Anthony Walters was chosen the CAA Rookie of the Week. Santos completed 23 of 33 passes for 289 yards and three touchdowns, and rushed 13 times for 45 yards and a touchdown in the Wildcats victory over BCS Marshall. Pate was a perfect 6-for-6 in extra points, including two in the overtime, and was 2-for-2 in field goals as the Tribe defeated Liberty, in overtime. Walters posted five tackles, a tackle for a loss of eight, and forced a fumble in the Blue Hens 38-9 victory over Rhode Island. Hofstra received its highest ranking since a number 12 placement on September 16, The Pride s four-place move is the largest by a team that was ranked last week. Hofstra is one of five Colonial Athletic Association members ranked in this week s Media Poll. Massachusetts (3-0) is third, James Madison (2-1) is eighth, New Hampshire (1-1), coming off a victory over FBS Marshall, is 10th, and Delaware (3-0) is 11th. Towson, which was ranked 23rd last week, fell out of the Top 25 after losing to Massachusetts, 36-13, last Saturday. Appalachian State (3-0) remained the unanimous choice at number 1 following their victory over Northern Arizona. Montana (2-0) is second, Massachusetts (3-0) stayed in third followed by Northern Iowa (3-0) and North Dakota State (2-0). McNeese State (2-0) used a victory over an FBS opponent and old rival, Louisiana-Lafayette, to vault up two places in the poll to sixth place. Southern Illinois (3-0) stayed at No. 7 with its hammering of Southern Utah. Youngstown State fell two spots to eighth, despite a 42-6 pounding of Stony Brook. James Madison used a rout of VMI to retain its ninth-place ranking. New Hampshire jumped two spots from 12th to 10th with their win over Marshall. The UNH victory was the sixth win of the season by an FCS school over an FBS opponent. It was also the third consecutive week that FCS schools have won two games against the FBS. Savage, the junior college transfer from Springfield, PA, completed 19 of 28 passes for 262 yards and threw a 43-yard scoring pass to senior Charles Sullivan in the third quarter. Savage also rushed six times for 14 yards and recorded scoring runs of 20-yards and 1-yard in the second quarter. Sullivan tallied his second consecutive 100-yard receiving game and the sixth of his career with six catches for 125 yards. Senior Kareem Huggins led the Pride ground game with 73 yards on 26 carries and had a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown late in the first quarter. The Hofstra defense shutdown the Albany attack, which posted over 500 yards last week at Fordham, with four sacks, and interceptions by David Darby, his second of the season, and Stanley Gutierrez, his first of the year. Gutierrez also led the Hofstra defensive charge with 15 tackles and two tackles for losses. Linebacker Gian Villante added 12 tackles while Darby posted eight stops. The Great Danes got on the board first late in the first quarter. After a Hofstra punt following a long Pride possession, Albany got the ball on their own 22-yard line. Behind quarterback Vinny Esposito and tailback David McCarty, the Great Danes went on an 18-play, 64-yard drive that chewed up 7:36 only to have the Pride defense stop them on the Hofstra 14-yard line. Albany had to settle for a 31-yard field goal from Jason Fralicker for a 3-0 lead with 1:21 to play in the first quarter. But the lead was short-lived as Hofstra senior Kareem Huggins took the ensuing kickoff and returned it 98 yards for the first kickoff return touchdown of his career. It was also Hofstra s first kickoff return for a touchdown since Robert Thomas 97-yard return against Liberty in Robert Zarrilli s extra-point gave the Pride a 7-3 lead with 1:08 to play in the first. The Pride defense forced Albany to three-and-out on its next possession and got the ball back at its own 16 yard line to start the second quarter. Quarterback Bryan Savage and receiver Charles Sullivan directed a seven-play, 84-yard drive with Savage keeping the ball on the option for a 20-yard scoring run. Savage and Sullivan hooked up twice in the drive for gains of 17 and 25 yards as the Pride took a 14-3 lead with 12:37 to play in the half. Hofstra, which held the Great Danes to three-and-out in all three possessions in the second quarter, boosted the lead to 21-3 late in the second quarter. Starting out at the Albany 45 following a Great Dane punt, the Pride went 55 yards in eight plays with Savage calling his own number for a one-yard touchdown run with 6 seconds remaining in the half. Zarrilli, who missed a 32-yards field goal attempt earlier in the period, booted the extra-point as Hofstra took an 18-points lead into the locker room at halftime. The Pride racked up 229 yards in the first half while holding Albany to 89 including just 32 rushing. Albany scored on its first possession of the second half. Following a 39-yard runback by Dieuseul Joseph to the Hofstra 41, the Pride defense held Albany to just 17 yards in eight plays and the Great Danes had to settle for a 41-yard field goal by Fralicker with 11:16 to play in the third quarter to close the gap to Hofstra came right back and went on a six-play, 63-yard drive with the scrambling Savage finding Sullivan for a 43-yard touchdown with 8:24 to play in the period. Neither team would score the rest of the way. Esposito completed 15 of 29 passes for 131 yards but was picked off twice. He rushed for 28 yards on 12 carries and scored once. Flanker Jason Smith caught four passes for 42 yards while Daniel Bocanegra added four receptions for 20 yards. The Great Danes running game was led by David McCarty with 47 yards on 16 rushes. It is Hofstra s first 2-0 start since 2005 and only the second 2-0 start in the last seven seasons (01-07). The Pride had seven 2-0 starts in the 1990s (90-99). The last time Hofstra opened the season 3-0 was in 1999 when the Pride won their first six games on the way to a 10-1 regular season. PRIDE DEFENSE: The Pride defense, which held Albany to six plays or less in eight drives on September 15, allowed just 225 yards including 94 on the ground. Hofstra ranks first in the CAA in total defense (269.0 ypg), scoring defense (15.0 ppg) and turnover margin (2.0 /gm), and second in rushing defense (89.5 ypg), pass efficiency defense (99.18 rating), and third in pass defense (179.5 ypg). The Pride is in the top 20 nationally in the FCS in all of those categories except for pass efficiency defense. MORE DEFENSIVE NOTES: - Albany s 225 total yards including just 94 rushing was Hofstra s lowest opponents total since New Hampshire had 140 yards in a storm-washed contest in The last time a Hofstra opponent had less than 100 rushing yards was last year at Delaware when the Blue Hens had just 99 yards. - Pride defense picked off two passes for the second consecutive game as senior David Darby recorded his second of the year and seventh of his career, and Stanley Gutierrez had his first of 2007 and the third of his career. K ROB ZARRILLI: Senior kicker Rob Zarrilli, Hofstra s two-time All-American, tied one school record and equaled his career-long field in the Pride s victory over #9 Furman last Saturday. The Orlando native made four field goals in six attempts to tie the Hofstra mark held by three others. Zarrilli s first field goal of the contest tied his careerbest of 52 yards in the first quarter. He later hit field goals of 33, 22 and 26 yards. He also added two PATs to post a 14 point night. - In 2006 he made 18 of 21 field goals and 15 of 17 extra points for 65 points. He led the A-10 and was second in the FCS in field goal average last season. For his career, he has made 39 of 46 field goal attempts (.848) and extra point attempts. QB BRYAN SAVAGE: Junior Bryan Savage rushed for two touchdowns and passed for a third in the Pride s victory at Albany on September 15. The junior signal-caller completed 19 of 28 passes for 262 yards. Savage scored twice in the second quarter on runs of 20 yards that boosted the score to 14-3, and on a one-yard plunge with 16 seconds to play in the half that gave Hofstra a 21-3 lead at the break. - For the second straight week, he hooked up with senior receiver Charles Sullivan for a 43-yard touchdown strike in the third quarter. 14 2007 HOFSTRA GAME SUMMARIES GAME 1 - SEPTEMBER 8 VS. #9 FURMAN: - Junior quarterback Bryan Savage passed for 285 yards in his college debut, senior Charles Sullivan tied his career-high with 12 receptions, senior Kareem Huggins posted the second 100-yard rushing game of his career and the Pride defense held the Paladins to 313 yards as Hofstra (1-0) defeated #9 Furman (1-1), 32-17, in a nonconference FCS game at James M. Shuart Stadium. The Pride christened their new FieldTurf at Shuart Stadium with their first 400-yard game in total offense (410) since Savage, a junior college transfer making his first start for the Pride, completed 24 of 36 passes for 285 yards and a 43-yard scoring strike to Sullivan that boosted the Hofstra lead to with 9:41 to play in the contest. Sullivan, who jumped two places to fifth on the Pride career receptions list with 164, caught 12 passes for 147 yards and tied his 2004 single-game high set against Rhode Island. Huggins rushed 25 times for 116 yards and added touchdown runs of three and six yards in the second half to erase a 17-9 halftime deficit. Senior kicker Rob Zarrilli, a two-time All-American, tied the school record with four field goals. It was a battle of the kickers and the defenses early on as Furman s Scott Beckler opened the scoring with a 37-yard field goal 2:38 into the contest. But Zarrilli tied his career-long with a 52-yard kick four minutes later, and then gave the Pride a 6-3 lead with a 33-yard field goal with 3:55 to play in the first quarter. Furman quarterback Renaldo Gray ( , 161, 1TD) mounted the first long drive of the game, leading the Paladins on an eight-play, 80-yard drive capped with an 11- yard scoring pass to tight end Chris Truss with 37 seconds to play in the first period. Zarrilli closed the gap to 10-9 with a 22-yard field goal with 8:13 to play in the half. But the Paladins boosted the lead to 17-9 on a Jerome Felton 1-yard run with 1:08 remaining in the half. Furman posted 196 yards in the first half and held the Pride to 135. Hofstra came out of the locker room at halftime and picked up the pace on both sides of the ball. After Zarrilli hit the upright on a 26-yard field goal attempt, the Pride defense forced Furman to a three-and-out possession and started their comeback. Savage, who played at Coffeyville Community College in Kansas last year after spending two seasons on the roster at the University of Wisconsin, led the Pride on a 9- play, 56-yard drive capped by Huggins 3-yard touchdown run. The junior signal-caller completed three of five passes for 45 yards and rushed twice for six more yards as the Pride cut the deficit to Despite no more scoring in the quarter Hofstra took command of the game in the period, racking up 139 yards of offense while holding the Paladins to just 22 yards. The Pride opened the game up in the final quarter, scoring on each of their first three possessions in the period. Hofstra got the ball back with 54 seconds to play in the third following a fumble by Jerome Felton ( ). The Pride drove 38-yards in five plays with Huggins giving Hofstra a lead on a 6- yard scoring run. It was a lead Hofstra would not relinquish. After the Pride defense stopped the Paladins once again, Savage hooked up with freshman Anthony Nelson for two catches for 33 yards, and two to Sullivan for 47-yards including a 43-yard scoring grab down the middle of the field for a lead with 9:41 to play in the game. After the Pride stopped Furman once again, Zarrilli capped a short drive with a 26-yard field goal, to tie the school record with his fourth field goal of the game, and close out the scoring. Hofstra posted its first win over a top 10 opponent since the final game of the 2005 season against #7 Massachusetts (21-10). Shuart Stadium Attendance: 5,028 Weather: 80 degrees and clear GAME 2 - SEPTEMBER 15 AT ALBANY: Hofstra quarterback Bryan Savage rushed for two touchdowns and passed for a third, and the Pride defense held the Great Danes to just 225 yards of offense as 19 th -ranked Hofstra (2-0) posted a nonconference victory over Albany (1-2) at University Field Saturday night. Savage, the junior college transfer from Springfield, PA, completed 19 of 28 passes for 262 yards and threw a 43-yard scoring pass to senior Charles Sullivan in the third quarter. Savage also rushed six times for 14 yards and recorded scoring runs of 20-yards and 1-yard in the second quarter. Sullivan tallied his second consecutive 100-yard receiving game and the sixth of his career with six catches for 125 yards. Senior Kareem Huggins led the Pride ground game with 73 yards on 26 carries and had a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown late in the first quarter. The Hofstra defense shutdown the Albany attack, which posted over 500 yards last week at Fordham, with four sacks, and interceptions by David Darby, his second of the season, and Stanley Gutierrez, his first of the year. Gutierrez also led the Hofstra defensive charge with 15 tackles and two tackles for losses. Linebacker Gian Villante added 12 tackles while Darby posted eight stops. The Great Danes got on the board first late in the first quarter. After a Hofstra punt following a long Pride possession, Albany got the ball on their own 22-yard line. Behind quarterback Vinny Esposito and tailback David McCarty, the Great Danes went on an 18-play, 64-yard drive that chewed up 7:36 only to have the Pride defense stop them on the Hofstra 14-yard line. Albany had to settle for a 31-yard field goal from Jason Fralicker for a 3-0 lead with 1:21 to play in the first quarter. But the lead was short-lived as Hofstra senior Kareem Huggins took the ensuing kickoff and returned it 98 yards for the first kickoff return touchdown of his career. It was also Hofstra s first kickoff return for a touchdown since Robert Thomas 97-yard return against Liberty in Robert Zarrilli s extra-point gave the Pride a 7-3 lead with 1:08 to play in the first. The Pride defense forced Albany to three-and-out on its next possession and got the ball back at its own 16 yard line to start the second quarter. Quarterback Bryan Savage and receiver Charles Sullivan directed a seven-play, 84-yard drive with Savage keeping the ball on the option for a 20-yard scoring run. Savage and Sullivan hooked up twice in the drive for gains of 17 and 25 yards as the Pride took a 14-3 lead with 12:37 to play in the half. Hofstra, which held the Great Danes to three-and-out in all three possessions in the second quarter, boosted the lead to 21-3 late in the second quarter. Starting out at the Albany 45 following a Great Dane punt, the Pride went 55 yards in eight plays with Savage calling his own number for a one-yard touchdown run with 6 seconds remaining in the half. Zarrilli, who missed a 32-yards field goal attempt earlier in the period, booted the extra-point as Hofstra took an 18-points lead into the locker room at halftime. The Pride racked up 229 yards in the first half while holding Albany to 89 including just 32 rushing. Albany scored on its first possession of the second half. Following a 39-yard runback by Dieuseul Joseph to the Hofstra 41, the Pride defense held Albany to just 17 yards in eight plays and the Great Danes had to settle for a 41-yard field goal by Fralicker with 11:16 to play in the third quarter to close the gap to Hofstra came right back and went on a six-play, 63-yard drive with the scrambling Savage finding Sullivan for a 43-yard touchdown with 8:24 to play in the period. Zarrilli s extrapoint boosted the Pride lead to But there was still more fight in the dogs as the Great Danes went on a 66-yard drive in seven plays after the kickoff, with quarterback Vinny Esposito scoring on a nine-yard run. Fralicker booted the extra point to close the deficit to with 5:23 remaining in the third quarter. Neither team would score the rest of the way. Esposito completed 15 of 29 passes for 131 yards but was picked off twice. He rushed for 28 yards on 12 carries and scored once. Flanker Jason Smith caught four passes for 42 yards while Daniel Bocanegra added four receptions for 20 yards. The Great Danes running game was led by David McCarty with 47 yards on 16 rushes.
