Gregory, who has previously led programs at Georgia Tech ( ) and Dayton ( ) and spent nearly a decade as an assistant coach under Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo, brings over 250 career head coaching wins and six postseason appearances, including the 2010 NIT championship, to Tampa. In his first season at the helm at USF, Gregory led the Bulls to the team s first double-digit win season since the season and tripled the team s conference win total from the previous season. The Bulls ended the regular season with back-to-back victories over Memphis (3/1/18) and SMU (3/4/18), marking the first time since 2016 that the team won consecutive conference games. The victory at Memphis was the Tigers worst home loss in 19 years. Under Gregory s tutelage, 11 student-athletes made the USF Athletics Honor Roll in his first full semester as head coach in fall Gregory also coached the team s first American Athletic Conference All-Rookie honoree since 2016 in freshman David Collins. In addition to Collins honors, four different Bulls were named to The American Weekly Honor Roll in , making five appearances on the list. The wins included top-10 victories on the road over No. 6 Miami (2013) and at No. 7 Syracuse (2014). Two Tech players earned All-ACC honors under Gregory and Glenn Rice, Jr. and Iman Shumpert went on to play in the NBA. Gregory made sure his program s academic success was exemplary. All of the four-year seniors in the Tech program under Gregory graduated and the team s Academic Progress Report (APR) and Graduation Success Rate (GSR) scores were at their highest levels since the NCAA began tracking program s academic performance. Six Tech players earned Academic All-ACC Team honors. As an assistant to legendary coaches Tom Izzo and Jud Heathcote at Michigan State, Gregory helped lead the Spartans to two NCAA Final Fours, three Elite Eights and the 2000 NCAA championship. He spent 13 years as a collegiate assistant coach under Heathcote (Michigan State, ), Izzo (Michigan State, & ), Kevin O Neill (Northwestern, ) and Stan Joplin (Toledo, ), before taking over the program at the University of Dayton as the head coach in He went 24-9 with an Atlantic 10 Tournament title and NCAA Tournament appearance in his first season. Gregory went on to earn A-10 Coach of the Year honors in 2005 and led the Flyers to five 20-win seasons and five postseason appearances in eight seasons. During his tenure, the Flyers reached as high as No. 14 in the AP Top 25 rankings, the program s highest ranking in 40 years, and knocked off numerous Top 25-ranked opponents, including victories over No. 6 Pittsburgh, No. 12 Louisville, No. 15 Marquette and No. 17 Xavier. Dayton returned to the NCAA Tournament in 2009, defeating No. 6-seed West Virginia in the first round before falling to No. 3-seed Kansas as the Flyers posted a 27-8 record. The following season Dayton went and marched to the 2010 NIT Championship defeating North Carolina in the championship game in Madison Square Garden. Every one of the 23 seniors to play for Gregory at Dayton graduated and he recruited future NBA players Brian Roberts, Chris Wright, and Chris Johnson, Dayton s first NBA players since After winning 23, 27, 25 and 22 games in his final four seasons at Dayton and posting an overall record of (.647), Gregory departed to become the head coach at Georgia Tech in He has posted a record in 14 seasons as a collegiate head coach in the A-10, ACC and American Athletic Conferences A native of Mount Prospect, Ill., Gregory attended the U.S. Naval Academy for one year, where he teamed with David Robinson to lead the Midshipmen to an appearance in the 1986 NCAA Elite Eight while posting a 30-5 record. USF enters play Saturday against Houston averaging 39.4 rebounds per game, which if the season ended today, would be the seventh-highest single season output in school history. Overall, USF is second in The American and 44th in the NCAA in rebounding. THE MAGIC NUMBER IS 70 USF scored 76 points Jan. 2 in its victory over UConn to continue a trend of success when scoring at least 70 points. In fact, USF enters play Saturday against Houston with a 17-8 record under head coach Brian Gregory when scoring at least 70 points. MAKING THEM PAY USF scored 23 points off Temple turnovers on Jan. 12. The Bulls have capitalized all season on its opponents turnovers and have 10 games this season with at least 20 points off opponent turnovers. USF enters play Saturday against Houston scoring 28.2 percent of its points off opponent turnovers. The Bulls rank first in The American and ninth in the NCAA with 9.9 steals per game. TEN FOR T.J. USF senior guard T.J. Lang scored 11 points Jan. 5 to help the Bulls to a victory over Tulane. The Bulls have enjoyed success this season when Lang reaches double figures. In fact, USF is 5-0 this season when Lang scores at least 10 points and 4-5 when he fails to score in double figures. MAY I HELP YOU? USF junior guard Laquincy Rideau finished with four assists Tuesday against Cincinnati and already has 97 helpers this season. Rideau enters play Saturday against Houston ranked first in the conference and 31st in the NCAA in assists with 5.7 per game. Rideau has collected at least four assists in every game but two thus far this season. OUND MACHINE USF redshirt freshman Alexis Yetna pulled down 10 rebounds Jan. 12 against Temple. Yetna has at least seven rebounds in 14 of 17 games this season and enters Saturday against Houston ranked 11th in the NCAA and first in The American with 10.4 rebounds per game. Yetna is also ninth in the NCAA and tops in The American with 3.8 offensive rebounds per game. Overall, USF is second in The American and 44th in the NCAA in rebounding with 39.6 per game. JUST GET TO TEN USF has enjoyed a great deal of success under head coach Brian Gregory when building a double digit lead. In fact, the Bulls open play Saturday against Houston with a 21-3 overall record under Gregory when leading by at least 10 points at any time during a game. MAKING IT RAIN USF sophomore guard David Collins hit one three-pointer Tuesday against Cincinnati and is fourth on the team with 19 treys thus far this season. Collins is just one more triple shy of matching his entire output from a season ago. Collins went 20-for-48 from three-point range last season as a freshman. SCORING AT WILL USF sophomore guard David Collins recorded his fourth game of at least 20 points when he finished with 20 points Nov. 30 against Colgate. Collins, who was named to the 2018 American Athletic Conference All-Rookie Team, has already surpassed his entire output of 20-point games from a season ago. Collins scored 20 points in three games last year. IN RARE COMPANY USF redshirt freshman Alexis Yetna scored 15 points to go along with 10 rebounds on Nov. 21 in a win over Florida A&M to register his second straight double-double. Yetna had 11 points and a career-high 17 rebounds Nov. 18 against Georgetown. Yetna became the first Bull since Jaleel Cousins in 2015 to have a double-double in back-to-back games. Cousins accomplished the feat against Boston (12 pts, 14 rebs) and Albany (12 pts, 13 rebs) on Nov. 21 and Nov. 24, Yetna duplicated that feat with consecutive double-doubles in wins over Alcorn State (16 pts, 11 rebs) and Fairleigh Dickinson (16 pts, 16 rebs). Yetna is currently on a three-game double-double streak having done so against Tulsa (13 pts, 13 rebs), Tulane (15 pts, 11 rebs) and Temple (24 pts, 10 rebs). WATCH YOUR BACK USF tallied 17 steals Jan. 12 against Temple and has recorded at least six steals in all but one of its games this season. The Bulls enter play Saturday against Houston ranked ninth in the NCAA and first in The American with 9.6 steals per game. Junior Laquincy Rideau ranks first in the league and third in the NCAA with 3.3 per game and sophomore David Collins stands second in the AAC and 12th in the NCAA with 2.6 thefts per game. DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS USF held Tulane to 48 points Jan. 5 in its victory over the Green Wave. The Bulls have proven to be a strong defensive unit since the arrival of head coach Brian Gregory prior to the start of the season. In fact, of the 49 games in which Gregory has coached at USF, the Bulls have held opponents to fewer than 70 points 23 times SOUTH FLORIDA MEN S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES

7 HALFTIME HIGH USF built a lead at halftime Jan. 5 in its win over Tulane. The Bulls have enjoyed success when holding a halftime lead under head coach Brian Gregory. In fact, the Bulls are 17-6 (73.9 percent) all-time under Gregory when leading at halftime. NEW BULLS USF signed two players to a National Letter of Intent in November in B.J. Mack and Jamir Chaplin. A 6-foot-7 forward at Oak Hill Academy in Virginia, Mack is ranked as a three-star prospect according to 247Sports and chose the Bulls over offers from Ole Miss, ECU, Arkansas, James Madison and DePaul. A 6-foot- 5 guard at Meadowcreek High School, Chaplin is a three-star prospect who chose USF over offers from Georgia Tech, Tulane, Illinois State and Middle Tennessee. As a junior at Meadowcreek High School, Chaplin led his team to a 26-6 overall record and capped the season with a state championship in Georgia s highest classification. He averaged 16 points, 5.9 rebounds and two steals per game. NOVEMBER TO REMEMBER USF made it a November to remember when it defeated Colgate on Nov. 30. That victory gave the Bulls their sixth of the month, which tied them with the team for the most wins in school history during the month of November. BIG TIME BENCH USF received 36 points from its bench Dec.21 in its victory over Alcorn State. It s the most points by a USF bench since the Bulls received 39 points from its reserves in a victory over ECU on Feb. 11, 2017 in Tampa. USF featured just two games last season in which it received at least 30 points off the bench. BELIEVE IN BG USF head coach Brian Gregory is in his second season with the Bulls after finishing his first year with USF with a overall record. Gregory, however, has showed incredible success in his second year with a program. In fact, Gregory has won at least 16 games in year two of each of his two previous head coaching stops. Gregory won 18 games at Dayton during the season and 16 games at Georgia Tech during the campaign. Gregory enters play Saturday against Houston just four wins shy of reaching 16 wins in his second season at USF. CLIMBING THE CHARTS USF head coach Brian Gregory tallied 10 wins during his first season with the Bulls and earned his 12th win of the season with a win over Tulane on Jan. 5. Gregory enters play Saturday against Houston eighth all-time at USF in wins and needs 12 more wins to move into seventh place on the USF all-time wins list. Don Williams ranks seventh all-time at USF. Williams won 33 games from in his three seasons with the Bulls. SPREAD THE GOOD NEWS USF received a jolt in the arm on Oct. 30 when the Bulls were informed by the NCAA that sophomore forward Mayan Kiir had received a waiver and would be eligible to play this season. Kiir, a transfer from LSU, is a four-star recruit that played at Victory Rock Prep in Bradenton, Fla., before enrolling at LSU. WELCOME TO TAMPA USF will welcomed a new face to the sideline when the Bulls hosted Alabama A&M in the season opener. New assistant coach Larry Dixon joined Brian Gregory s staff this summer and replaced the departed Chad Dollar. Dixon comes to Tampa after five seasons as an assistant coach at Georgia Southern. Prior to his stint with the Eagles, Dixon had coaching stops at Winthrop ( ), ECU ( ), South Carolina State ( ) and St. Andrews College ( ). HEADS UP The USF men s basketball team features two seven-footers in senior Nikola Scekic (7-2) and freshman Michael Durr (7-0). The Bulls enter the season as one of only nine teams in the NCAA with at least two seven-footers on its roster. Hawaii (3), Utah (3), ETSU (2), Valparaiso (2), Austin Peay (2), Saint Mary s (2), Washington (2) and Wisconsin (2) also have multiple seven-footers.
