Jo Leedham Luol Deng Did You Know? Basketball was created in 1891 by Dr James Naismith in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA. Naismith, a physical education professor was trying to keep his class active on a rainy day so decided to nail two peach baskets onto a 10ft elevated track and wrote the basic rules of the game. Where it All Began Some Key Dates Canadian born Dr James Naismith creates the game and basic rules. The first professional league, the National Basketball league is created. Peach baskets replaced by metal hoops with backboards. The International Basketball Federation formed by eight founding nations: Argentina, Czechoslovakia, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Portugal, Romania and Switzerland. Men s Basketball is included for the first time at the Berlin summer Olympic games. The British & Irish Basketball Federation (BIBF) formed later changing its name to Great Britain Basketball after Ireland opted to leave. Women s basketball played for the first time at the Montreal summer Olympic games. The British Basketball Federation (BBF) was formed from England Basketball, Basketball Scotland and Basketball Wales. Great Britain men s & women s teams competing at the London Olympic games, their first appearance at the Olympics for 64 years. 3
Pops Mensah Bonsu Steph Collins General basketball information Basketball has evolved many commonly used techniques of shooting, passing, and dribbling, as well as specialised player positions and offensive and defensive structures (player positioning) and techniques. Typically, the tallest members of a team will play center, small forward, or power forward positions, while shorter players or those who possess the best ball handling skills and speed play point guard or shooting guard. While competitive basketball is carefully regulated, numerous variations of basketball have developed for casual play. Competitive basketball is primarily an indoor sport played on carefully marked and maintained basketball courts, but less regulated variations are often played outdoors in both inner city and rural areas. 4
Classroom Activities General Students should discuss 1) Have you played basketball before? - If yes, how did you like it? - If no, would you like to try basketball? Art 1) Draw a picture of what you imagine a basketball competition to look like. 2) Create a collage using pictures of basketball players. Can you represent each type of court position in the collage? 3) Design banners for your trip to the event to cheer on the Standard Life Great Britain teams. 4) Create a display in your school to show what your class has achieved. English 1) Research about some great basketball players and write a short story about their accomplishments or achievements - For example Luol Deng, Michael Jordan 2) Write a short story about your class travelling to the Game On Sheffield event. Which basketball players will be featured in your story? 3) Think about some questions that you would like to ask the players. Discuss them with your class and write down five to bring with you to the event. Your teacher could also them to us as we will be asking the players some of them before the event. Mathematics Imagine you are selling tickets for Game On Can you help these customers using the ticket prices below? (Ticket prices on page 10 of this Pack) 1) Peter wants to buy a Student ticket for himself and an Adult ticket for his friend to come with him on Saturday 14 July. How much do the tickets cost altogether? 2) Mary wants to buy a Family package for both Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 July. How much does this cost? 3) John is planning to purchase two Courtside tickets and one Adult ticket for Saturday 14 July. What will the cost be for John? 4) How much would it cost to buy Adult tickets for your family members for Saturday? Is it better to buy a Family package or Adult tickets for each person? Geography 1) Look at a map of the world and make a list of all the countries you can find. Can you find all the countries who are playing in Sheffield? 2) Can you find the capital cities of these countries? 3) Research basketball players that might attend Game On 2012 who come from other countries. Pin-point them on a map of Europe and display it in your classroom. 4) What is the furthest an athlete will have to travel to compete at Game On 2012 in Sheffield? What country would they be coming from? 5
Health and Nutrition 1) Discuss what you think should be included in a nutritious lunch for a basketball player. - What types of food should they eat to keep healthy and strong? What proportions of each do you think they should eat and why? - Do you think they need to eat more or less than you? Why? 2) What are some of the important things to remember in order to keep yourself healthy if you were an athlete? - Break into groups to talk about this and write down the three things that you think are most important. Once your group has decided discuss the answers with your class. Activities for the Sports Hall / Gym / Playground Physical Education Place the group into pairs and encourage them to find different ways of shooting at the basket, e.g. using two hands or using one hand, jumping whilst shooting (jump shot), different distances etc. One student will shoot the ball and the other will collect. Students take it in turns to shoot. Discuss with their partner what they best way to shoot is. In pairs they will show another pair what they think the best way to shoot at the basket is. Discuss with the group how points are scored and play the following game; 12! In pairs, each student must score from the free throw line, inside the 2-point area and score a 3-point shot (from outside the arc). Once both students have scored from each spot they shout 12! To signify they have completed the task. Pairs can play against another pair, or lots of pairs can take part, if multiple baskets are available, and compete against each other. Variations; Place markers on the floor and pairs have to score from each marker to win the game. 2 players can go head to head. 6
Chantelle Handy Luol Deng Further Activities Basketball is one of the few games that requires jumping as a skill. Not that you cannot play without being able to jump, but it becomes a fundamental part of being able to consistently score. In order to get better at jumping you will need to practice. Remember to warm up properly before doing any physical activity. Have a go at these: Jump Squats Stand with your feet together, jump up as high as you can. When you're feet touch the ground, bring your butt all the way down until they touch your heels, then spring back up into a standing position. Long Jumps You'd be surprised, but jumping at an increasing distance, can also help you jump higher! This is a great way to strengthen your leg muscles and also increase your confidence! There are lots of ways you can do long jumps. The easiest way is to draw to lines with chalk about 1-2 meters apart, stand one end and jump to the other. As this becomes easier increase the distance between the lines of chalk. Getting Involved England Basketball If one of your students is keen to find out more about basketball the link below will help them: - Find their local basketball club - Details about upcoming basketball events. - Read the latest basketball news. 7
Class Quiz Questions Take the Standard Life Game On 2012 quiz to learn more about the sport. The answers are provided at the end for your convenience. 1) Who invented basketball? 2) In what year was the first professional basketball league formed? 3) Name four of the countries that founded the International Basketball Federation. 4) When was the last time Great Britain competed in basketball at the Olympic Games and where was it held? 5) In what year did women s basketball first feature at an Olympic games? 6) What is the name of the competition arena for the Game On 2012?
