RG3 and Cam Newton share the ability to beat teams with their arms and their legs. Let s face it, Matt Cassel of the Chiefs has nothing in common with them. This should be a return to more normal preparation for the Saints defense. On top of that, the offense hasn t really missed a beat, scoring 29.5 PPG and averaging 422 YPG in the first two outings. They should have a field day against the porous Chiefs defensive unit that has allowed 75 points in their first two contests. Plus, this is nearly a must win for New Orleans with a trip to Green Bay next on the docket. Saints win big here. VI Jason says Real tough loss for the Buccaneers last week in New York, and a win in that type of game really could have propelled this team for the rest of the season at 2-0. Instead they are now 1-1 and face a difficult contest in Dallas as the Cowboys play their home opener. At 1-1, Tampa Bay has to be concerned by the fact that it is allowing over 450 YPG of offense while being outgained by 170 YPG. They are also allowing 7.4 yards per play, and Tony Romo s Cowboys offense should be licking its chops for this one. At the same time, Dallas has played fairly well in the first two games and not much should be made of the final score in the Seahawks contest as the game was far more competitive than the score indicates. The Forecaster and Effective Strength Ratings both indicate Dallas should be favored by double digits. I agree. Dallas puts a hurtin on the Bucs in front of the home folks this Sunday. VI Paul says While there are several reasons to respect New England for its history with Tom Brady at the controls, Baltimore is the better team. The Ravens know they should have played the Giants in the Super Bowl last February and will be out to extract some semblance of revenge against the Patriots. The Baltimore offense has a new explosive element, being able to score from anywhere on the field and how they are utilizing Ray Rice is brilliant in the run and pass game. Look for the Ravens to set a tone throwing the ball down the field, before coming back to the running game. The Birds are a sensational home favorite and knock off New England by 10. In the chart below, you ll find the ratings, along with potential edges shown for the upcoming games. The Power NFL STRENGTH Ratings columns are in-house ratings kept and maintained manually for every game throughout the season. The Effective Strength RATINGS (Effective Strg) Ratings quantify a team s performance against varied schedule strengths. The Simulation is run using a formula factoring in a number of variables, most notably stats in recent games. Finally, the Bettors Ratings (Bettors Rtng) are built using a unique formula of a team s closing lines in relation to its past opponents and game performances, giving a good indication of how bettors feel about a team. Each rating is built exclusive from the others, and thus has its own merits. Track the results of the ratings weekly and see which one works best for you. 7 AUGUST 30 SEPTEMBER 3 NFL HEAD-TO-HEAD 6 NFL HEAD-TO-HEAD SERIES BREAKDOWN For every issue of the Vegas Insider this season, we ll take a look at each upcoming NFL matchup from a head-to-head series standpoint, searching for edges on either side or total wagering option. Here are this week s breakdowns, in rotation number order. September 20, 2012 (303) NY GIANTS at (304) CAROLINA New York and Carolina met only once in the first eight year existence of the Panthers franchise but have played six times since. In those contests, the SU & ATS ledger are both split 3/3, with the Giants having won the only ever series meeting in Charlotte, in 06. Road teams are 4-2 ATS in that span. OVER the total has been a winning wager in four straight games of this set. The Panthers are 0-2 SU & ATS all-time on Thursday nights. September 23, 2012 (401) ST LOUIS at (402) CHICAGO Chicago has beaten St Louis in three straight h2h games after losing the four prior. The most recent meeting was 2009, a 17-9 decision in the Windy City, with the hosts playing as 9-point favorites failing to beat the Vegas number. Road teams are on a significant run of 6-2 ATS in the L8 between these teams while UNDER the total shares that same 6-2 mark in that span. (403) TAMPA BAY at (404) DALLAS It has been nine years since Tampa Bay last beat Dallas in a NFL game. In that time, the Cowboys have won four straight games in the series, both SU & ATS, while outscoring the Bucs Dallas will also be looking to extend a winning streak by favorites in this h2h set to six games straight against the pointspread. Tampa s last win in Dallas was 2001, a 10-6 decision. (405) SAN FRANCISCO at (406) MINNESOTA Minnesota has won two straight games versus San Francisco and four of the L5 (3-2 ATS). The most recent meeting was in 2009, a home win for the Vikings but an ATS victory for the 49ers (+6.5). That was the closest San Francisco has come to winning in Minneapolis since their victory in 92, as they are 0-4 SY & 1-3 ATS since at the Metrodome. (407) DETT at (408) TENNESSEE Detroit has never beaten the Titans since the franchise moved out of Houston back in the mid-90 s. The Titans are 3-0 SU & 2-1 ATS in the series since then, including a upset victory (+2.5) in the only game played in Nashville back in 05. However, the Lions were 4-0 SU & 3-1 ATS vs. AFC foes in 2011 and have won five straight non-conference clashes overall. (409) CINCINNATI at (410) WASHINGTON Cincinnati-Washington might be the rarest of all NFL head-to-head series of late, as thanks to scheduling changes and other factors, the matchup has only occurred twice in the last 20 years. The Bengals won both of those games, in 04 & 08, by a touchdown margin. The 04 contest was in Washington, as Cincinnati snapped a 3-game all-time losing at the Redskins. (411) NY JETS at (412) MIAMI The Jets and Dolphins have split the season series in each of the L4 NFL campaigns so it s a good bet that whichever team wins this time out, the other will return the favor in the second meeting at the end of next month. In any case, for this particular matchup, the Jets hold a sizeable edge in the recent matchups in Miami, ATS going back to 98. Furthermore, road teams are ATS in the L11 overall. (413) KANSAS CITY at (414) NEW ORLEANS New Orleans has won the only two h2h matchups with Kansas City in the L15 years. The most recent meeting was in 08, a decision at Arrowhead Stadium. In the last game in New Orleans in 04, the host Saints pulled a upset at 3.5-point underdogs. Both of those games fell below totals posted in the 50 s. (415) BUFFALO at (416) CLEVELAND Three of the L4 series games between Buffalo and Cleveland produced less than 20 points combined. In fact, two of those contests featured just 8 & 9 points. Needless to say, those three games easily went UNDER the total. The Bills (-1) won the most recent matchup, 13-6 at home in 2010, snapping a strong of three straight wins by the Browns, both SU & ATS. Despite that winning streak, Cleveland has scored just 56 points in the L5 series games. (417) JACKSONVILLE at (418) INDIANAPOLIS Even before Peyton Manning missed the 2011 series sweep by Jacksonville, the Colts have for long struggled in head-to-head play versus the Jaguars. In fact, going back to 05, this series is just 6-5 in favor of Indy, but the Jaguars own a 7-4 ATS edge. Furthermore, Jacksonville has gone 6-2 ATS in its L8 trips to Indianapolis. Both games of this series in 2011 went UNDER the total, but prior to that, OVER was on a 6-1 run. (419) PHILADELPHIA at (420) ARIZONA Arizona won its biggest game in franchise history back in 2009 against Philadelphia, the game that sent the Cardinals on to their only ever Super Bowl. Including that win, the Cardinals are now 3-1 SU & ATS in their L4 games versus the Eagles. 8 17 upset in Philly as a 13-point dog. OVER the total is on a 4-1 run in this series. (421) ATLANTA at (422) SAN DIEGO San Diego and Atlanta have met eight times previously with the Chargers having won exactly once in the series, that coming way back in It s been a struggle for the Chargers in this matchup, as they ve scored just 11.8 PPG. Fortunately for them, the series is played just once every four years nowadays. All but one of the eight games has gone UNDER the total as well. (423) HOUSTON at (424) DENVER Home teams have won all three of the previous meetings between the Texans and Broncos, and Denver will look to make it four in a row when the teams go head-to-head on Sunday. In the most recent meeting back in December of 2010, Houston played as a 1.5-point road favorite, rare at that time, and was upset UNDER the total is in the three prior matchups. (425) PITTSBURGH at (426) OAKLAND One of those rare scheduling historical oddities in the NFL, Pittsburgh has been in Oakland just one time in the L17 seasons, losing to the Raiders back in Since that 95 clash, six of seven games between these old fierce rivals from the 70 s were played in the Steel City. Underdogs have proven to be the side of choice in wagering, 7-2 ATS in the L9 meetings of this series. (427) NEW ENGLAND at (428) BALTIMORE Like just above, trips to Baltimore have been rare for the Patriots, as they ve been there just once since 96, winning in December of 07. If you recall, that was New England s perfect regular season, and HC Bill Belichick s team played as an unprecedented 18.5-point favorite on the road. Including that game, the Patriots are 7-1 in the L8 h2h matchups, but the Ravens hold a ATS edge in the L5. However, was this really a Trojans undoing or a simple fact that Stanford has been badly underrated all season long so far? I would tend to side with the latter more than the former, and USC should prove it this weekend against Cal. The power ratings show that USC should be favored by 22 points in this game, and that even includes a 2 or 3 point drop from last week s loss. Don t lose sight of the fact that Cal has allowed at least 31 points in all three outings thus far, so the maligned Matt Barkley should bounce back. The other thing I am looking at his series history. Let s face it USC has been Stanford s whipping boy the last half decade, losing five of six. On the other hand, the Trojans have owned Cal, winning eight straight times in the series. Look for USC to make it nine in a row over the Golden Bears in a romp. VI Jason says Louisiana Monroe has played itself into respectability by beating Arkansas and then narrowly losing at Auburn. The Warhawks will face another tough test here when they host Baylor on Friday night. One of the things I like to do early in the season is to look for major line movements from the results of the first few games. In this case, had this game been played three weeks ago, the pointspread would have been Baylor by about 12 points, and that was assuming a Baylor team downgraded significantly from the loss of RG3, now tearing up the NFL. Whether or not this Bears team should even be downgraded at all is certainly questionable at this point, as they have proven themselves offensively worthy by scoring 53.5 PPG in wins over SMU and a strong FCS squad in Sam Houston State. Baylor should light up the scoreboard and pull away late to get the win & cover over LAM on Friday. VI Paul says The Georgia offense has been piling up the points in averaging 47.3 per game, led by quarterback Aaron Murray. While I do not expect them to tally as many against a good Vanderbilt defense, I hardly believe they will be contained. The Commodores have offensive concerns, as head coach James Franklin benched starting quarterback Jordan Rodgers for Austyn-Carta Samuels. This creates a no-win situation, with Rodgers not pleased and Samuels having to produce at a level his likely uncomfortable with, especially on the road. Matching points with this Georgia offense is not in the cards for the Commodores. With Vandy 5-17 ATS off a home win by 17 points or more, the Bulldogs take care of business and win by 20. Here are this week s breakdowns, in rotation number order. September 19, 2012 (301) KENT ST at (302) BUFFALO Kent State and Buffalo start the Wednesday night weekly MAC schedule with their first head-to-head game since 09, a 9-6 doozy of an affair won by the visiting Bulls (-3). Including that game, road teams are 6-2 SU & ATS in the L8 of this series. As another sign of a series featuring poor teams, favorites are just ATS in those games. (313) SOUTH FLORIDA at (314) BALL ST Last year was the first time ever that South Florida and Ball State met on the gridiron and USF reminded the Cardinals why it wasn t a regularly scheduled game. The Bulls (-20.5) dominated, outgaining Ball State , en route to a 37-7 win. This time around the scene shifts to Muncie, IN however. (315) MEMPHIS at (316) DUKE It s surprising, but this will be the first ever meeting between Duke and Memphis in football. These two schools, known primarily for their basketball prowess, are actually separated by nearly 12 hours. The Tigers have won just one of their L19 road games. (317) E MICHIGAN at (318) MICHIGAN ST Michigan State has hosted in-state foe Eastern Michigan five times since 1996, scoring five blowout wins while going 4-0 ATS. The combined scores of the contests has been an overwhelming to 248 to 44, with the two most recent games ( 06 & 08) being the closest, each decided by 32 points. (319) BOWLING GREEN at (320) VIRGINIA TECH Bowling Green and Virginia Tech last met in 93, and owns a 2-0 record in the series. However, the games were decided by just 17 & 14 points. Since those games, Bowling Green has only been in ACC country two times, going 0-2 SU & 0-1 ATS, the most recent game being a loss at Boston College in September 20, 2012 (305) BYU at (306) BOISE ST Boise State and BYU square off in what should be a nice test for both BCS-buster teams. Of course, the Broncos are out of the talk for a BCS bowl at this point after losing to Michigan State in the opener, but they still have their sights set on a title in the Mountain West, the conference BYU left after Boise comes in with an 18-game winning streak (12-5 ATS) at home in non-saturday games, and was 2-0 SU & 1-1 ATS in two games vs. BYU back in 03 & 04. September 21, 2012 (307) BAYLOR at (308) LA MONROE Still riding high after its upset of Arkansas on the road two weeks ago, Louisiana-Monroe gets a rare chance to host a BCS conference school in primetime on national television. LAM has only hosted one such school in lined action previously, that same Arkansas team back in 2008 and nearly pulled the upset before losing as 14.5-point dogs. This is Baylor s road opener and the first time ever contesting the Warhawks. September 22, 2012 (309) ARMY at (310) WAKE FOREST Army and Wake Forest last squared off in the 2007 season, with the host Demon Deacons (-19.5) scoring a victory. It was the fifth straight outright victory for Wake in the h2h series. However, Army has fared well overall on the ACC road, going ATS in its L4 trips, including the 2007 game in Winston-Salem. (311) CLEMSON at (312) FLORIDA ST Like a few other ACC series that Florida State grew accustomed to dominating in the 90 s and early 00 s, Clemson has turned the tide of late, going 5-2 SU & 6-1 ATS since 05. In last year s game, the Tigers (-1) held the Seminoles to 29 yards rushing and scored a win. This has been a high scoring series for the last decade-plus, with OVER the total going 9-3 since (321) C MICHIGAN at (322) IOWA Central Michigan made trips to Iowa back in 94 & 98, losing both games by a combined score of The Chippewas have been far more competitive of late when visiting Big Ten foes however, going 2-3 SU & 4-1 ATS, including upsets at Michigan State in 09 and Indiana in 08. (323) UAB at (324) OHIO ST Ohio State hosts its last non-conference game of the season against UAB before heading into Big Ten play next week at Michigan State. It will be the first ever meeting between the Blazers and Buckeyes, and just the second time that UAB is on the road in lined action against a Big Ten school. In the last outing, in 07, UAB lost in East Lansing (325) EAST CAROLINA at (326) NORTH CAROLINA North Carolina is 5-1 SU & ATS versus East Carolina in head-to-head play over the last decade, with the only outright loss coming at Greenville back in 07. The Tarheels have covered the pointspread in the L5 of the series and have won three straight by at least 14 points, playing as favorites each time out. (327) TEMPLE at (328) PENN ST If Temple ever had a chance to end its lengthy losing streak against Penn State, this would have to be the season. The Owls have dropped 29 straight games in this so-called rivalry, but after covering the pointspread in three straight and coming within 4 points of an upset last November, Temple has its best shot on Saturday. Five straight games in the series have gone UNDER the total. (329) MARYLAND at (330) WEST VIRGINIA Since Maryland routed West Virginia 41-7 back in 04, this h2h series has been completely one-sided. The Mountaineevrs have won six straight games over the Terps, including the L4 as favorites. (333) MASSACHUSETTS at (334) MIAMI OHIO Miami Ohio and Massachusetts meet for the first time on Saturday and it will be a first of another sort for the Minutemen, as they play their grand opening game in the MAC. The Redhawks also play their conference opener for 2012 after going 11-6 ATS over the L2 seasons in league play. (335) VANDERBILT at (336) GEORGIA Vanderbilt last beat Georgia in 2006, but has lost five straight in the series since. That said, the Commodores have been competitive for the most part, going 4-2 ATS in the L6. In last year s game, Vandy nearly pulled the upset on a late punt block that came up short of the end zone. The Bulldogs won as 13.5-point favorites. Four of the L5 between these teams went UNDER the total. (337) UTAH ST at (338) COLORADO ST Colorado State pulled its biggest upset in five years last September at Utah State, rallying for a win in double overtime as 12-point underdogs.
