Tulsa Head Basketball Coach John Phillips and wife Leah purchased 200 of the children s book Inch and Miles: The Journey to Success and donated these books to the school library of local elementary schools. The book, written by Legendary Basketball Coach John Wooden, is based upon Coach Wooden s Pyramid of Success. Inch and Miles: The Journey to Success delivers a gentle message about the personal greatness that lives within all of us. Over 160 local elementary schools have already received the books. Coach Phillips and Tulsa basketball players, Jason Parker and Jarius Glenn, spent some time at Mark Twain Elementary School on Monday, November 10, reading to the school children to kickoff the book campaign. The book's forward reads... Inch and Miles have one final assignment before summer vacation begins. Their wise teacher, Mr. Wooden, has asked them the meaning of success. Using a magic silver whistle, Inch and Miles set out on a journey to discover the blocks of the Pyramid of Success and learn how to try 100 percent to be their personal bests. From Axelrod and Ant, who teaches the two the value of Hard Work, to Albert the Alligator, who stresses Confidence, Inch and Miles meet 14 characters representing values with a certain guarantee of Success. When Inch and Miles have completed their journey and returned to the classroom, they understand when Mr. Wooden says: Success isn t having trophies or toys. It isn t a medal or friends of your choice. What is Success? That s easy to see. It s trying to be the best you can be! Don t worry what others may have or might say. When trying your best, Success comes your way. Coach Wooden amassed 10 national championships, 7 in a row, along with 4 perfect seasons, an 88- game winning streak, and 38 straight victories in tournament play as the Head Basketball Coach at UCLA. The book was written with best-selling author Steve Jamison and Peanut Louie Harper, and illustrated by Susan F. Cornelison.
