Wisconsin didn t hesitate to get the game going as Emily Borgmann notched her first goal of the season in the 6th minute of action. The sophomore forward was able to find the back of the net on an unassisted play from inside the penalty area which put Badgers on top, -0. But it only took Santa Clara a little more than two minutes to avenge the Badgers goal when the Broncos Julie Vass swiped one past junior goalkeeper Caitlyn Clem to find the back left of the net, tying the game at -. For the remainder of the first half, SCU kept getting good looks at Wisconsin s goal, but no shots were able to fall in and the teams headed into halftime knotted up at -. The Cardinal and White had a chance to come away with the win late in regulation when sophomore Steph Fabry launched a shot into an open goal in the 87th minute, but the ball bounced off the crossbar. Santa Clara also had a last-minute opportunity to take the game when Katie Pingel took two back-to-back shots at the Badgers net in the 89th minute, but Clem dove into action to save both of Pingel s attempts. With both teams failing to net a goal, the game went into its first period of overtime still deadlocked at -. The first ten minutes of overtime proved to be a struggle for both teams to get an effective offensive strike going as SCU s Brittany Ambrose was the only player from either team to get off a shot, and with that the game was forced to go into double overtime. The Badgers offense came out a bit more energetic in the second overtime period with both Fabry and Borgmann getting off shots, but in the end the team had to settle with a - draw. Overall the game proved to be a physical one, with both teams collectively drawing 3 fouls over 0 minutes of play. While Santa Clara may have outshot Wisconsin -0, the Badgers produced more opportunities near the net tallying seven shots on goal while the Broncos recorded four. Senior Micaela Powers helped the Badgers to cut Stanford s early -0 lead late in the game but UW (--) dropped its second contest of the season as the Cardinal improved to 4-0. The Cardinal struck quickly, scoring both of its goals nearly just one minute apart in the 0th minute and th minute of the game. Stanford s Andi Sullivan had the assist on the first goal, which was scored by Kyra Carusa, and netted the second goal off of a penalty kick for her first goal of the season. Wisconsin s goalkeeper Caitlyn Clem was tested plenty more after the Cardinal took a two-goal lead, but she and the Badger defense were able to hold Stanford off as she recorded a season-high six saves on the night. But it was Powers who brought the Badgers back into the game in the 80th minute of the match. With time winding down, Emily Borgmann crossed the perfect pass to Powers who headed in the shot, cutting Stanford s lead to -. It was Powers second goal of the season, already making it the most season goals she s had in her career. Stanford outshot Wisconsin -5 with eight shots on goal compared to UW s WISCONSIN SOCCER 06-7

Lavelle had the second-most shots in the game at two behind Stanford s Ceci Gee who fired off three. BADGERS AND BULLDOGS BATTLE TO SCORELESS DRAW The Wisconsin women s soccer team battled Drake to a 0-0 draw through double overtime on Sunday afternoon at the McClimon Soccer Complex. In the ninth minute of the first overtime period, Wisconsin had a chance to take the game when a penalty on Drake s Hannah Wilder put senior midfielder Rose Lavelle up to take the penalty kick. But the kick hit the right goal post, narrowly missing the net, and the game was forced into a second overtime period. In the two teams first-ever meeting, the Badgers offensive prowess was in full swing during the first half as they recorded nine shots, six of which came within a span of less than nine minutes. In the second half, the Cardinal and White s offense kept gaining momentum recording shots, two of which were on goal. The team s defensive front was also productive, only allowing the Bulldogs to get off two shots in each period of regulation. The final 0 minutes of play saw both teams playing their best defense as senior midfielder Micaela Powers was the only player from either team to get off a shot, but ultimately the game ended in a 0-0 draw. The Badgers overwhelmingly won the statistical battle earning more shots (4-4), shots on goal (6-) and corner kicks (5-). Lavelle was a dominant force on the pitch recording eight shots, tying her career best and also earning a new season-high three shots on goal. The Badger defense did their job as junior goalkeeper Caitlyn Clem was only tested once and tallied one save as the offense forced Drake s Morris to make five. STICK WITH WHAT YOU KNOW The Badgers are keeping the backline steady with defenders Allie Winterfield and Kylie Schwarz, who have started all six games for the Badgers. Winterfield is the only freshman to have started all six games. BET ON BORGMANN Sophomore Emily Borgmann is the only Badger to tally both a goal and assist this season. ONE FOR THE RHODES It didn t take long for the excitement of a new season to begin for the Wisconsin women s soccer team, just over two minutes to be exact, as Dani Rhodes scored an early goal and the Badgers shut out Illinois State, -0, on the road in their season opener on Friday night. A freshman forward from Waukesha and a twotime Wisconsin Gatorade Player of the Year, Rhodes fired in the lone goal in the third minute of the game to lead the Badgers to a seasonopening victory in her debut. Off of a corner kick and assist from junior Sydney McGinnis, which created a great scoring opportunity, Rhodes knocked in the Badgers first goal of the season in the bottom right corner of net just under three minutes into her Wisconsin career. Junior Caitlyn Clem was in net for the Badgers and clinched her first shutout of the season with a total of four saves. SECOND HALF SURGE NOT ENOUGH Despite a strong second half surge, the Wisconsin women s soccer team suffered its first loss of the season to Notre Dame at Memorial Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Caitlyn Clem started at goalkeeper and made three saves, with two coming in the second half. She allowed one goal against her. Notre Dame s goalkeeper, Kaela Little, managed seven saves. Wisconsin took back the momentum and walked away with the corner kick advantage outdueling ND 4-3 with all four corners coming in the second half for UW. 8 WISCONSIN VS. SOUTH DAKOTA STATE/LOYOLA-CHICAGO HEAD COACH PAULA WILKINS COACHING HISTORY University of Wisconsin Head Coach: 007-Present Penn State Head Coach: Penn State Assistant Coach, HEAD COACH PAULA WILKINS 0TH SEASON One of the most accomplished college soccer coaches in the country, Paula Wilkins completed her ninth season as head coach of the Wisconsin women s soccer program in 05. With a pair of College Cup Semifinal appearances and 0 NCAA tournament berths, Wilkins has elevated herself among the game s elite coaches. During her time in Madison, Wilkins has established a winning culture and produced consistent success with the women s soccer program at Wisconsin. Among Big Ten women s soccer coaches with 0 or more years of experience, Wilkins is the all-time leader in win percentage (.706). She ranks third in Big Ten history for career coaching wins (7). Wilkins also ranks second all-time in Big Ten history with seven Big Ten titles, and that doesn t even include her three Big Ten tournament titles. Wilkins work in establishing a winning culture at Wisconsin culminated in one of the program s most remarkable seasons in 05. Despite beginning the year 3-4- overall, Wilkins rallied the Badgers to a nine-game unbeaten streak. The remarkable run included a -0 victory at Maryland, which clinched UW a share of the Big Ten regular season title the program s first title since 994. Wilkins was named Big Ten Coach of the Year for the sixth time in her career and became the second ever to win the award at Wisconsin, joining only Dean Duerst (996). Under the mentorship of Wilkins, Rose Lavelle became the first NSCAA first-team All-American at Wisconsin since 99 and the program s first-ever Big Ten Midfielder of the Year. Victoria Pickett was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year, just the second in UW history joining only Lavelle both coached by Wilkins. Wilkins was recognized as the 05 Madison Sportswoman of the Year by the Madison Sports Hall of Fame Club. Wilkins and Wisconsin put together the winningest season in program history in 04. The Badgers finished the year with a 9-3- overall record, claimed the Big Ten tournament title and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament. Wilkins coached Rose Lavelle and Genevieve Richard to become the program s first NSCAA All-Americans since 000, while Richard also became just the second player in UW history to be named Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year. Cara Walls, Rose Lavelle and Kinley McNicoll joined Richard in earning First-Team All-Big Ten accolades, while Brianna Stelzer was Second Team All-Big Ten. Lavelle, McNicoll, Richard, Stelzer and Walls each earned All-Great Lakes Region recognition, as well. Guiding the Badgers to a 0-win campaign in 03, Wilkins became just the second coach in school history to earn double-digit victories in five consecutive seasons. A former All- American herself, Wilkins helped acclimate her heralded rookie class to the college game, while also aiding Rose Lavelle in becoming Wisconsin s first ever Big Ten Freshman of the Year award winner. Lavelle went on to become the 6th UW player to earn first-team All-Big Ten honors, the first since 0. In 0, Wilkins guided Wisconsin an appearance in the NCAA tournament, the team s third in the last four seasons, and eclipsed 0 wins for the fourth-straight year. In 0, the Badgers made their third-straight appearance in the Big Ten Tournament. Wilkins guided UW to the NCAA Tournament in 00, the school s best finish in 5 years, after reaching the third round of the NCAA tournament in just her third season with the program. In her second season, UW finished with a 9-9- record finishing the season at.500, and narrowly missed a berth into the Big Ten Tournament. In her first season Wilkins led the Badgers to a 6-- record, marking a three-game improvement overall and a one-game improvement in the Big Ten from 007 to 008. Following the conclusion of her first season Wilkins scored one of the top recruiting classes for 008, ranking st in the nation and marking the highest ranking in UW history. Prior to her start at Wisconsin, Wilkins was the head coach at Penn State for six years. The Nittany Lions earned six NCAA tournament berths, which included two College Cup appearances during her tenure. In addition, Penn State won six-straight Big Ten regular season championships, along with a pair of Big Ten tournament titles. Penn State dominated Big Ten women s soccer for most of the 3 seasons of the school s sponsorship of the sport and Wilkins was part of the coaching staff the entire time. She joined the Nittany Lions as an assistant coach when the program debuted as a varsity sport in 994 and served in that role until she was named head coach at the end of the 000 campaign. Wilkins coached nine All-Americans at Penn State, including four-time All-American Christie Welsh, the 00 player of the year and winner of the prestigious M.A.C. Hermann Trophy. Wilkins also recruited and guided Tiffany Weimer, a three-time All-American, two-time Big Ten offensive player of the year and the conference s record holder in career goals.
