7 WOMEN S FINAL FOUR RETURNS TO TAMPA BAY IN 2015 Tampa Bay & Company is proud to announce that the NCAA Division I Women s Basketball Committee has selected Tampa Bay, and the University of South Florida, to host the 2015 NCAA Division I Women s Final Four Championship. This announcement serves as tremendous validation for all of the hard work that went into the 2008 Women s Final Four, said Executive Director of the Tampa Bay Sports Commission Rob Higgins. Hosting an event like this is usually a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, but our great community will fortunately experience the Women s Final Four a second time through the efforts of numerous organizations, countless volunteers, and the entire hospitality industry that comprises Team Tampa Bay. When evaluating prospective host cities, the committee reviewed each city s competition venue, convention center, hotel community, transportation plans, legacy programs and financial commitment, as well as the community s and prospective host institution/conference s overall commitment to the event. With the dedication and support that the University of South Florida (USF) showed for the efforts in 2008, the University will once again fill the role of Host Institution in I am extremely excited about USF again serving as the host institution for another NCAA Women s Basketball Final 4. 10 USF Basketball News & Notes 10 USF WBB Inks Another Solid Recruiting Class University of South Florida head women s basketball coach Jose Fernandez announced another solid recruiting class during the Fall 2010 early signing period. Fernandez announced the signing of three players to National Letters of Intent. The Bulls have inked 6-4 center Caitlin Rowe from Canberra, Australia (Gulf Coast C.C./Lake Ginninderra College), 5-10 guard Tamara Taylor (St. Petersburg, Fla./Boca Ciega H.S.) and 5-7 guard Shalethia Stringfield (Jacksonville, Fla./Potter s House Christian H.S.). Rowe is a very mature student-athlete and has developed her skills on the hardwood at Gulf Coast Community College (GCCC) in Panama City, Fla. She carries her outstanding work ethic onto the floor, and competes at the highest level. Rowe played for Australia s under-20 national team and was among the leaders in the U- 20 world championships in points (2nd averaging 20.2 ppg), rebounds (1st averaging 13 rpg) and blocked shots (1st averaging 2.0 bpg). She has a great face up game, soft touch to about 16 feet and can catch and finish in traffic. At GCCC, Rowe averaged 3.5 points, 3.2 rebounds and 0.7 blocked shots per game second on the team while helping the Commodores to a 32-1 record and the National Junior College Athletic Association National Championship with current USF standouts, and twin sisters, Andrea and Andrell Smith. So far this season, Rowe is netting 6.3 points per game and 3.3 rebounds per outing. She also leads the team in blocked shots (1.3 bpg) and is second in assists (1.7 apg). Caitlin will bring added depth to our front line and brings a wealth of experience from Gulf Coast Community College, said Fernandez. She won a national junior college championship as a freshman and her experience playing international basketball, and going up against high-level competition, will make her an immediate contributor to our program. She is able to guard interior post players because of her size and offensively she can create mismatch problems because she can step out and shoot the three. Taylor is an athletic off-guard who flourishes in an up-tempo style of offense, which will be ideal here at USF. Her biggest offensive threat is her ability to catch and shoot from very deep range. Tamara led her team to the 5A state championship game last year scoring a combined 39 points in the semifinals and finals. She is a back to back First Team All-Pinellas County selection. One thing that Tamara does extremely well is shoot the ball from the perimeter, said Fernandez. She scores points in bunches and it s always great to sign a player of her caliber especially being a local player from the bay area that can come in and help us with our perimeter shooting. That s one of the areas that we needed to address with this class. Stringfield is an extremely tough combo-guard that penetrates and finishes in traffic, a one-on-one creator with consistent offensive game, an excellent on-ball defender. In addition, goes well beyond the three-point arc. Stringfield came into her senior year at Potter s House Christian ranked as the 19th best guard in America and the 95th best player overall in America by ESPN HoopGurlz. Shalethia will fit into the way we play because she is an up-tempo guard, said Fernandez. She can defend all 94-feet. I really compare her to a player that we had a few years ago here, Anedra Gilmore. She has the same similar playing style and athleticism and she brings a lot of intensity on the floor. The good thing about Shalethia is that she is a freshman and we will have her for four years USF Bulls Women s Basketball
