The others are Arkansas, Arkansas State, Arizona, Connecticut, Mississippi State, North Carolina State, Santa Clara and Tulane. USF hosts No. 7 Texas Tech tonight in perhaps the most anticipated game of the Jerry Ann Winters era. The Lady Raiders (7-0) jumped from No. 12 to No. 7 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll Monday. One of the nation s most prominent programs, Texas Tech has a current streak of 10 consecutive NCAA Tournament bids as well as five Sweet Sixteen appearances in the last eight seasons. Texas Tech may be the most high-profile team to play at the Sun Dome since the 1980s when Old Dominion would make an every-other year appearance when both the Bulls and the Monarchs were Sun Belt Conference members. South Florida is attempting to open a season 8-0 for the first time in 23 years. The Bulls only previous 8-0 start was in the season. The Bulls won 10 of their first 11 on the way to a 15-4 record. The streak is the third-longest in history. USF won 10 straight when it took the final two games of the season and the first eight on the season. The Bulls won nine consecutive in its inaugural season, USF has been bolstered by the addition of five newcomers senior forward Monica Echeverria, sophomore guard Melissa Fairley, freshman guard Aiya Shepard, freshman forward Lindsey Smith and freshman center Ashley Teets. Echeverria, a two-time junior college All-American at Central Florida Community College, leads the Bulls in scoring with 15.9 points per game, in rebounding with 11.3 per game and in assists with 4.6 per game. She recorded Conference USA s first-ever triple-double two weeks ago against Cal Poly SLO. Fairley scored 22 points and grabbed six rebounds in back-to-back games against Cal Poly SLO and Delaware. She brings current averages of 4.3 ppg and 2.2 rpg into the Jacksonville game. Shepard may be the most pleasant early-season surprise. The back-up point guard scored a career-high 15 points in 26 minutes against Bethune-Cookman Saturday and followed that with 10 points and six steals at Jacksonville Wednesday. Her averages include 6.4 ppg. The inside game, already stronger with Echeverria s presence, is solid with Smith and the just-eligible Teets. Smith is averaging 7.5 ppg and 3.3 rpg over the last four games. Her season averages include 5.1 ppg and 3.4 rpg. Teets made her debut against Bethune-Cookman Saturday and picked up three points and a rebound in four minutes.
2 University of South Florida Basketball Game Notes... Page 2 A long-time USF weakness -- shooting -- has turned into a strength. Generally one of C-USA s poorest shooting teams, USF has finished seventh, 10th and sixth among C-USA s 12 teams over the last three seasons, respectively. The Bulls, though, are currently second in the league, connecting on 45.3 percent of its field goal attempts, just behind Tulane s 48.2 percent. The statistics took a jolt Wednesday at Jacksonville, though. The Bulls took a 48.4 percent statistic into the game but shot a season-low 31.1 percent (23-of-74). That figure includes a 5-of-21 night from the three-point line. USF s field goal percentage leaders include Dione Smith (57.1 percent), Monica Echeverria (55.7 percent), Aiya Shepard (48.7 percent) and Denetrice Stinson (58.1 percent). Echeverria, the only Bull to record the necessary number of attempts to rank among C-USA leaders, is second behind Marquette s Lisa Oldenburg. USF can be found near the top of other C-USA statistical categories, as well. The Bulls rank No. 3 in scoring with 74.0 ppg, a figure that, if maintained, would be the third highest ever at USF. The offense has averaged 85.0 ppg in three consecutive games with Florida State, Florida Atlantic and Cal Poly SLO but has struggled at times, too. The Bulls were heled to 65 against Delaware, 62 in the season-opener at Central Florida and a season-low 61 at Jacksonville Wednesday. Scoring could be another challenge against Texas Tech. The Lady Raiders are holding opponents to just 50.7 ppg. Texas Tech is ranked No. 3 in this week s NCAA statistical rankings at 52.3 ppg, a figure that does not include Wednesday s win over Lamar. The Bulls are also No. 2 in field goal percentage defense (38.3 percent), No. 2 in turnover margin (+5.71) No. 3 in scoring defense (61.4 percent), No. 3 in scoring margin (+12.6), No. 3 in steals (12.43) and No. 5 in three-point field goal percentage (32.1 percent) USF and Texas Tech are meeting for the first time. The Bulls are winless in three games against teams from the Big 12 after Baylor stopped USF s season-opening five-game win streak with a victory a year ago in the finals of the USF Thanksgiving Classic. The Bulls are also 0-1 against Iowa State (93-70 in ) and Nebraska (91-50, ) USF coach Jerry Ann Winters is 0-1 against Texas Tech and is 5-13 against the Big 12. Winters took her Arkansas State club to Lubbock and lost Texas Tech went on to post a 33-4 record while ASU finished That season was Winters last at ASU as she moved on to South Alabama the following year. Against the rest of the Big 12 Winters is 5-12: 0-1 vs. Kansas, 1-0 vs. Kansas State, 0-1 vs. Missouri, 2-2 vs. Nebraska, 1-2 vs. Oklahoma, 0-3 vs. Oklahoma State, 0-1 vs. Texas and 1-0 vs. Texas A&M. Jerry Ann Winters next victory will be No. 250 since she began coaching at Arkansas State in She is in 16 seasons coaching at the Division I level. She was in eight seasons at Southern Baptist, then a two-year school, in Walnut Ridge, Ark. Over 24 career seasons she is USF s seven three-pointers against Cal Poly two weeks ago rank No. 2 on the school s all-time single-game list, just behind the eight hit against Missouri- Kansas City in the season. Two Bulls sophomore guard Meagan Leggett-Smith and freshman guard Aiya Shepard are Texas natives. Leggett-Smith was a two-time Class 5A all-state selection at Longview High School while Shepard was a two-time allstate pick at Palestine High School. USF s season-opening win over Central Florida has added significance considering the Golden Knights are one of seven teams on the schedule that advanced to the NCAA Tournament a year ago. UCF won the Trans America Athletic Conference regular-season and postseason championships before losing to Louisiana Tech in the first round of the NCAA Championship. USF has 10 games against teams that participated in the post-season a year ago and eight games against teams that were in the NCAA Tournament field. USF opponents in the NCAA Tournament a year ago include Conference USA schools Cincinnati, Louisville, Marquette and Tulane and non-conference opponents Central Florida, Texas Tech and Wisconsin-Green Bay. Memphis participated in the Women s NIT. Wanda Guyton, rookie USF assistant coach and veteran professional player, is one of the Top 100 Tampa-area athletes of the 20th century according to The Tampa Tribune. Guyton, who starred at USF from 1985 through 1989, was a product of Tampa s Hillsborough High School. After playing professionally overseas, the Houston Comets made her the fifth overall pick in the WNBA Elite Draft in Guyton played two seasons with Houston and played last season with the Detroit Shock. She was No. 64 on the list of the top 100 athletes of an 11-county Tampa Tribune coverage area. Her bio can be found on page18 of the USF Media Guide. Last Saturday s game with Bethune- Cookman was the first of three doubleheaders with the USF men. USF s games with IUPUI, Wednesday, Dec. 29, and Wisconsin-Green Bay, Wednesday, Jan. 5, are the other doubleheader dates. Tip off is at 4:15 both afternoons. The men host Harvard, Dec. 29, and UAB, Jan. 5. Those games each tip off at 7 p.m. Nine Bulls have made starts thus far, due in part to Charmain Leslie s sprained ankle suffered in practice Dec. 1. Leslie, a senior forward, is not yet 100 percent but did return to the starting lineup at Jacksonville Wednesday. She was held scoreless in 20 minutes. She did not play against Cal Poly SLO two weeks ago, played just three minutes against Delaware the next night and five minutes against Bethune-Cookman last Saturday.
3 University of South Florida Basketball Game Notes... Page 3 Veterans Sarah Wilson and Meagan Leggett-Smith have made their first career starts in the last two weeks and rookies Melissa Fairley and Lindsey Smith have also earned starts. Monica Echeverria became the first woman in South Florida and Conference USA history to record a triple-double two weeks ago and then became just the third Bull to earn league Player of the Week honors. The senior from Armenia, Colombia, had 21 rebounds, 13 points and 10 assists while leading the Bulls to an win over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Echeverria, who also had six steals that night, followed her history-making performance with 11 points, nine rebounds and three steals in a win over Delaware. What can I say about Monica that her game doesn t say for itself, said USF coach Jerry Ann Winters. She says it all by the way she plays and her work ethic and the way she makes everyone around her better. The fun thing is she is liable to do it again. Her two-game averages that week included 15 rebounds, 12 points, 7.5 assists and 4.5 steals. Echeverria leads USF with 15.8 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. Every time I play I concentrate and want to improve more and more, said Echeverria. Cal Poly s defense was the toughest I ve had on me this season. Every time I took the ball they were on me and my teammates did a very good job of getting open and I was able to find an open teammate. Sonya Swick and LaTonya Greer are the only previous Bulls to earn C-USA Player of the Week honors. Swick picked up the award last February when she averaged 29.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in wins at UNC Charlotte and at Houston. Greer became USF s first Player of the Week winner in February, 1997, when she averaged 19.5 points and 12.5 rebounds in wins against Southern Miss and No. 24 Tulane. Quoting Coach Jerry Ann Winters From Her Thursday Press Luncheon On Texas Tech... The biggest concern is their freshman post player who s phenomenal. We really thought this was a great time to get Texas Tech. They had graduated a lot of their key players from last year and we thought we d get them in a rebuilding year but even in their rebuilding years they re still pretty good. They have the kind of program we are striving to get, the kind of program you don t rebuild, you just reload. That is definitely what they ve done this year especially with Plenette Pierson and certainly she s not the only weapon they have which makes it extremely difficult for us. They will be without a doubt, the most athletic team we will face to date and possibly the most athletic team we ll face all year. On Texas Tech coach Marsha Sharp... Marsha Sharp just does a great job. Her whole staff. She has two assistant coaches who have been with her forever and they are just great people. They do a tremendous job recruiting. They get the best players in the state of Texas. They re always going to be tough, no matter what. On what a win would do for the USF program... The most exciting part if we win is that we would be on Sportsticker on the bottom of ESPN. I hope that being 7-0 is important to the Tampa Bay area. If we were able to do what most people think right now is the impossible, then I think it would be important on a much larger scale. I think at least momentarily it would give us some nation-wide attention. I think it would send a message to not only our conference, but to some other people who watch our scores and are monitoring our progress. It s an opportunity. It s an opportunity. On senior forward Monica Echeverria... I chewed her out at halftime last night. I gave her the erasable pen and said would you pleasee come up here and draw e the offense you re running? I had no clue. I don t even look at the stats at halftime most of the time because I m too busy running my mouth. She had a double-double at the end of the half and I m chewing her out. But I was unhappy with her performance. We ve just come to expect so much from her, when she lets her girl catch the basketball we re disappointed, when she doesn t block out, we re disappointed. She wasn t playing well (at Jacksonville). She was letting her girl catch the basketball in the post and we had worked on denying that pass to the post. She wasn t blocking out anybody. I don t care if she did have 12 rebounds (at halftime). My goodness, when you miss as many shots as we did they all should have had 12. There were a lot of opportunities for them to increase their rebounding average. The toughest adjustment I think that she s had to make (since coming from Colombia) is for her to realize that she has to operate within a system. She s just so good in the open court and she s so good freelancing. On the team reaching its potential... I told them all a while ago in the middle of the court that none of them have reached their potential and if they think they have they need to find another program to play in. We re just doing things that we ought not to be doing and unless they finally get it through their heads that we aren t going to accept anything less than what we want out of them we are going to continue to be unhappy with them. We didn t play very well last night. On USF s future... We are very excited about the future of our program with these young ladies. When we look out there and see two or three freshman out there on the floor at one time holding their own, and they re doing really well, we think maybe we are making some progress. On freshman guard Aiya Shepard against Jacksonville... Aiya Shepard came in twice last night and had a really good game. She comes in and creates the biggest spark on both ends of the floor. She creates some problems for the opponents. Her only drawback is her size, she s so little, but she gets it done.
