JJ Jumper, the official mascot of NCAA Basketball, will be at the WTAMU Event Center for Saturday s game. Fans can tune into the Buffalo Sports Network, on KGNC 710 AM or streamed on the Internet at About The Teams The Buffs are 12-6 overall, 2-1 in LSC South action, after pulling away from Angelo State University, 94-79, Thursday. Abilene Christian has a 10-8 overall and 1-2 LSC South record, having lost three of the last four contests, after being run over by the Greyhounds of Eastern New Mexico, 87-61, on Thursday. The Coaches WTAMU head coach Rick Cooper (Wayland Baptist, 1981), who is in his 10th year at the helm of the Buffs, is WTAMU s all-time winningest head coach. Cooper became WTAMU s all-time winningest coach with in the Buffs win at Southwestern Oklahoma on Jan. 8. Cooper currently has 210 wins, passing Sam Burton s 206 wins from With a (.681) overall record, Cooper currently is fourth on WTAMU s Best Winning Percentage list. {See WTAMU s coaching log on Page 6}. 2 Abilene Christian is coached by Klint Pleasant (David Lipscomb, 1998), who is in his third year at the helm of the Wildcats. Pleasant, who played football at ACU before transferring to David Lipscomb, has a (.511) overall record as a collegiate head coach. He came to ACU after a tenure as an assistant at Division I Kent State, where he helped lead the Golden Flashes set a Mid-American Conference record for single-season victories, with 30, and a trip to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. About WTAMU The Buffs are 12-6 overall, 2-1 in LSC South action, after pulling away from Angelo State University, 94-79, Thursday. It was the Buffs ninth win in their last 11 games. WTAMU was led in the scoring category with 22 points apiece from seniors Jason Campbell (6-4 forward) and Rod Prater (6-1 guard). Campbell was 8-10 from the field and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds to lead the Buffs to a rebounding advantage. Carlos Silva (6-8 junior forward) tallied a career-high six blocked shots as WTAMU won its third-straight over ASU and leads the all-time series 24-14, and it was also ASU s fourth-straight loss overall. As a team, WTAMU leads the conference in 3-point FG pct. (.404), and rank second in field goal pct. (.487), free throw pct. (.715) and 3- point FG made (151, 8.39 pg). The Buffs rank 20th in the NCAA-II statistics in 3-point FG pct., and 36th in 3-point FG made and 28th in field goal pct. On the season, Prater leads the Buffs with a 19.8 points per game average. Prater ranks second in the LSC in scoring. He also is ninth in the conference in both steals (1.88 spg) and assists (3.56 apg) and eighth in free throw percentage (.747). Eduardo Caviglia, a 6-4 senior guard, nets 11.0 ppg, ranking 27th in the league in scoring. Caviglia is third in the conference and 16th in the country in 3-point FG pct (.467), as well as third in the conference and 38th in the nation in 3-point FG made (50, 2.9 pg). The third member of the Buffs three-guard attack and WTAMU s sixth-man is Carl Lamb, who is 24th in the LSC in scoring with 12.2 ppg. Lamb also ranks sixth in the league in both free throw percentage (.774) and 3-point FG pct (.439), as well as seventh in assists (3.88 apg). Inside, Richard Higginbotham, a 6-7 junior forward, pulls down a team-high 6.2 rebounds per contest, which ranks 11th in the conference. 3 Higginbotham would lead the conference in FT pct (.929), but he doesn t meet the required minimum of 2.0 FT per game. He does rank tied for 11th in blocked shots (11, 0.65 pg). Silva ranks second in the LSC and is 21st in the country in blocked shots (38, 2.1 bpg). Silva would lead the conference in field goal percentage (.650), but he also doesn t meet the minimum of 3.0 FG per game. The third post player for WTAMU is Campbell, who is 19th in the league in rebounding with 5.6 rpg and adds 11.1 ppg, doubling his scoring average over the last 11 games. Keenan Hooker, a 6-0 sophomore guard, is 13th in the LSC in 3-point FG pct. (.412), tallying 3.8 ppg, but scored career-highs in back-to-back games, netting 11 points in his first career start against Okla. Panhandle State (1/13/04) and topping that with 12 points in the loss to Texas A&M-Kingsville (1/22/04). Hooker tied a career-high by draining three 3-pointers in each of those games. Campbell s Average Climbing Jason Campbell has nearly doubled his scoring average in the last 11 games. The 6-4 senior forward was averaging just 5.4 ppg through the Buffs first seven games. In WTAMU s last 11 games since that time, Campbell is averaging 15.3 ppg, including 21.0 in WTAMU s last three games, to up his average to 11.1 ppg on the season. He has averaged 6.0 rebounds per contest in those last 10 games. As far as helping the team, the Buffs have won nine of those 11 games, after losing the previous three contests. WTAMU At Home The Buffs are 6-2 at home this season, having a four-game home win streak snapped in a loss to Tarleton State on Jan. 17. Overall, WTAMU is 21-7 at the WTAMU Event Center. WTAMU s longest home win streak is six games, including the last five home games last season and the first home game this season. 4 The Wildcats are tied for second in the conference in scoring offense (78.2 ppg), and are third in the league and 39th in the country in 3-point FG made (146, 8.11 pg). On Thursday, ACU shot 35.9 percent (23-64) from the field, including 6-20 (30.0 percent) behind the 3-point arc. The Wildcats outrebounded by the Greyhounds, ENMU jumped out to a 25-5 lead and had a halftime lead. David Baxter, a 6-3 junior guard, leads the Wildcats and is 12th in the conference in scoring (15.7 ppg) and leads the league in both free throw percentage (.870) and 3-point FG made (60, 3.33 pg). Baxter ranks 15th in NCAA-II in 3-point FG made. Baxter had a team-high 13 points in the loss to ENMU on Thursday, draining four 3-pointers. Rodney Lee, a 6-4 senior guard, is 17th in the LSC in scoring (13.5 ppg) and is tied for fourth in 3- point FG made (47, 2.61 pg). Lee tallied eight points against ENMU, hitting two treys. Cliff Green, a 5-11 senior guard, leads the conference, as well as sixth in the nation in steals (3.28 spg) and leads the league and is 25th in the country in assists (5.83 apg). Green dished out seven assists to go with five points Thursday. Tucker Pierson, a 6-5 senior forward, is 18th in the LSC in scoring (13.6 ppg). Pierson also leads the conference and is 26th in the country in rebounding (9.2 rpg). Pierson netted 11 points and had five rebounds in the loss to ENMU Thursday. WTAMU-ACU Series History The Buffs lead the all-time series, 57-21, having won the last eight meetings, including both last year. WTAMU won at Abilene on Jan. 25, 79-63, behind three players in double-digits, led by Rod Prater s 21 points, along with six assists and three steals. Kyle Caldwell netted 18 points, while Matt Madison recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. ACU was led by Rodney Lee s 24 points, while Tucker Pierson added 18 points. The Wildcats shot a paltry 38.5 percent from the field, including 23.5 percent (4-17) from 3-point land. The Buffs dropped the Wildcats, 79-64, on Feb. 20 at Canyon, as four WTAMU starters tallied doublefigures, led by Caldwell s 15 points, along with a game-high nine rebounds. 5 Last Action: Buffs Rout Rams, 94-79, Thursday (Jan. 29, 2004) Four Players In Double-Figures as WTAMU Wins Third-Straight Over ASU The West Texas A&M University Buffaloes showed they were the better of the horned mascots Thursday night at the WTAMU Event Center, as the Buffs gored the Angelo State University Rams, 94-79, in a Lone Star Conference South division contest. It was the third-straight for WTAMU over ASU, as the Buffs now lead the all-time series, The win improved WTAMU to 12-6 overall and 2-1 in LSC South action, while ASU suffered its fourthconsecutive loss and is now 10-8 overall and 0-3 in LSC South play. Senior forward Jason Campbell continued his hot streak, tying fellow senior, guard Rod Prater for high-point honors with 22 points apiece. Campbell, who netted 15 first-half points, has doubled his scoring average in the Buffs last 11 games, helping WTAMU to nine wins in that span. Campbell was one rebound short of a doubledouble, pulling down a game-high nine boards, helping the Buffs to a rebounding edge. Junior guard Carl Lamb, WTAMU s sixthman, netted 16 points, all in the second half, and dished out a game-high seven assists. Senior guard Eduardo Caviglia tallied 10 points, as every WTAMU player in uniform scored at least two points. Junior forward Carlos Silva swatted away a career-high six shots and pulled down six rebounds and tied a career-high with four assists. Prater netted 18 second-half points and dished out six assists. ASU also had four players in double-figures, led by Kenny Smith s 18 points, 13 in the first half, while Matt Hardin tallied 16 points. Heath Bailey added 13 points to go with his team-leading eight rebounds and Rashawn Childs recorded 11 points before fouling out. The Buffs shot 50.0 percent (31-62) from the field, including 9-24 (37.5 percent) from 3-point land. ASU had a 44.9 shooting percent, draining 9- of-27 3-point shots. The big difference in the game was at the free throw line as WTAMU outscored ASU, The game was nip-and-tuck throughout the first half, as WTAMU would take a five or six-point lead, only to have ASU claw back and stay close. The Buffs had its biggest advantage at 18 points twice in the game, the first with 5:41 to play on a pair of free throws from Prater, and the second with 1:20 to play at following a three-point play by Campbell.
