The Pirates most recently were outshot by No. 16 NC State, but held the Wolfpack to just a single goal for a 1-1 road tie. It is the seocnd straight year ECU is unbeaten through three games after starting ECU has already had five different Pirates find the back of the net and 10 pick up at least one point leading scorer Courtney Cash is once again leading the Pirates offensviely, with a team-best five points on a pair of goals and an assist. Tori Riggs, Jenna Dages, Grace Doran, Carsen Parker and Kat Gonzalez have all scored so far this season as well. Scouting the Wildcats Davidson enters the weekend with a record, losing to Coastal Carolina and beating USC-Upstate. The Wildcats will hit the road for the first time this season, playing at Gardner-Webb on Friday and then in Greenville on Sunday. Cameron France, Natalie Connell and Alexis Pheng have all scored one goal while Perry Zollicoffer has a pair of assists. The Series ECU has historically dominated the rivalry between the two schools, winning all seven matchups and outscoring the Wildcats Last season, ECU traveled to Davidson and left with a 2-1 win. The Pirates goal was scored by Courtney Cash and assisted by Chentay Warnes and Morgan Dewey. The goal came off a corner kick and it was the fourth time this season, including exhibition matches, that ECU has scored off a Dewey corner kic. It was the second straight official match, after Dewey found Jenna Dages with a corner during the Radford match. Dewey and Cash also both connected on corner kicks in both the VCU and Gardner-Webb exhibitions. Defensive Might In both road games this season, the Pirates have been outshot, but are still able to hold their opponents to a draw. In the season opener, Old Dominion outshot ECU and 6-1 in the two overtimes, but the ECU defense held the Monarchs to just a single goal. In Thursday s game at NC State, the shot disparity was even greater as the Wolfpack held a edge. But thanks to eight saves from Stiles and the defensive quartet of Jayda Hylton-Pelaia, Kim Sanford, Carsen Parker and Dewey, who all played 110 minutes, NC State could only get on the scoreboard once. One big reason for the defensive solidity is that ECU has allowed opponents to take 54 shots, but only 18 of those have been on goal. AAC Weekly Honors In the first conference weekly honor of the season, ECU had a pair of Pirates honored. Jayda Hylton-Pelaia was named the AAC Defensive Player of the Week Hylton-Pelaia played 186 minutes in ECU s two games last week, including all 110 in a 1-1 draw at Old Dominion. After giving up a goal and losing a player to a red card all within the first 15 minutes, the junior from Brampton, Ontario helped hold Old Dominion scoreless the rest of the way. Hylton-Pelaia made a key contribution to keep the game tied, sliding to block a Monarch shot in the second overtime period. Hylton-Pelaia played 72 minutes in the 5-1 win over Radford on Sunday and picked up her first point of her collegiate career when she tallied an assist on Courtney Cash s goal. She also earned the penalty kick that Carsen Parker converted for ECU s fourth goal of the day. Hylton-Pelaia becomes the first Pirate to be named AAC Defensive Player of the Week since Kim Sanford earned the honor on Sept. 18, Also honored was Courtney Cash, with the senior earning a spot on the conference Honor Roll. Cash finished the week with three points after scoring a goal and adding an assist against Radford. Cash had an assist on Grace Doran s goal against the Highlanders and added a goal of her own, all in the first half. Although she did not get on the scoresheet against Old Dominion, she still had a large impact on the proceedings, playing all 110 minutes and drawing a penalty kick for the Pirates. Non-Conference Success Over the past two seasons, ECU has gone against non-conference opponents. ECU is at home in that span and on the road. One of the two losses came against the Wolfpack last season when the Pirates fell 2-1 on the road. Chentay Warnes scored ECU s lone goal of the day, with Ashley Kendrot providing the assist. Newcomers Blending In Since the arrival of head coach Jason Hamilton in December 2017, the roster has undergone significant changes, with 16 newcomers arriving this season to go along with 13 returners. In the first two games, eight new arrivals have made at least one start and 14 have made an appearance. Melanie Stiles has stabilized the goalkeeper position, starting both games. Offensively, Doran, Dages, Parker, Gonzalez and Dewey have all recorded points so far. Cash On Career Leaderboards With another goal and two points, Cash is creeping up on the career leaderboards at ECU. The senior from Cary has 34 career points, leaving her four shy of Chrissy Gratz s ninth-best total. Cash now has 14 goals in her career and needs six more to become just the eighth Pirate to score 20 career goals. Finally, with two more assists, she will move into a tie for ninth on the all-time list as she currently holds six career helpers. AAC Preseason Poll The Pirates were picked to finish eighth in the American Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. ECU will hope to exceed that prediction and return to the conference championship for the first time since That season the Pirates finished in sixth, their highest ever AAC finish, and won a pair of postseason matches to reach the AAC semifinals. Up Next ECU will hit the road once again, traveling to Richmond to play the Spiders. The match is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 30, with kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
