Hopkins Turning Up The Heat Senior G Darren Hopkins has turned up his production since league play began six games ago. After 13 non-conference games he was averaging 7.9 points on 32 percent shooting (just 28 percent from outside) and 3.5 rebounds, but in the last six games his numbers have escalated to 13.7 ppg on 45 percent shooting (42 percent from outside) and 6.0 boards Balanced Scoring Has Been The Key Through six conference games, Lamar has five players averaging double figures in scoring with the first and fifth scoring options separated by just 2.5 points per game. In fact, six different players have led the team in scoring over the course of the first six games. Best shooters in the league? Lamar Sanders ranks second in FG Pct at 64.3 pct, Currye Todd is first in 3-Point FG Pct at 48.3 pct and Kenny Dawkins is first in FT Pct. at 88.3 pct. No school has had two players lead the league in FG and FT shooting in the same season, let alone all three categories. Hopkins Named SLC Player of the Week - Jan. 28 Senior G Darren Hopkins was named the Southland Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week after leading the Cardinals to a 4-1 start in league play. It is the second-career honor for Hopkins, as he first won the honor on Feb. 26, Hopkins is also the second Cardinal to win the honor this season, as Lamar Sanders was selected on Jan. 14. Hopkins had his two highest-scoring games of the year last week, as he averaged 17.5 points and 5.5 rebounds while shooting.619 (13-of-21) from the floor helping Lamar sweep road games at UCA and Northwestern State. In the team's overtime win at Central Arkansas, he netted a team and season-high 20 points (on 7-of-11), which snapped the Cardinals' eight-game road losing streak. He was perfect in the second-half alone, scoring 10 points on 3-of-3, 2-of- 2 from outside and 2-of-2 from the FT line; adding 4 points, 2 rebounds and an assist in overtime. D-Hop came back two days later and finished with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting against the Demons, adding a team-best seven rebounds. He dished out three assists in each game, tying his season-best, while his three steals also tied his career high. Lamar s win over Northwestern State snapped a seven-game losing streak to the Demons. The last win over a NW State squad came on Feb. 3, 2005 in Natchitoches. The 91 points scored by LU were the fifth-highest in series history.... And 8-Game Road Skid Stopped At UCA Lamar s win at Central Arkansas was its first road victory of the year (1-6) and snapped an eightgame road losing streak that dated back to last season. The Cardinals last win in an opponent s arena came at UCA last season. LU has won all three meetings with UCA since the Bears joined the SLC a year ago. Lamar Plays Second-Consecutive OT Game For just the third time in school history, Lamar played consecutive overtime games (SHSU and at UCA). In January of 1997, Grey Giovanini s squad actually played three-straight overtime games - going and actually had another two games after the last one for a stretch of four OT battles in five games. Pat Foster s bunch played free basketball in the second and third games of their season. More Overtime Notes Lamar is now all-time in overtime games and 2-0 this season. The last time a Cardinal squad won two OT games in the same season came during the campaign. Furthermore, it is just the fourth time to win two conference OT games ( , 94-95, 96-97). Offensive Rebounding Pleasing To Coach Roc Head coach Steve Roccaforte has always wanted his players to play hard for 40 minutes. He is starting to get that response on the glass. In the last four games, Lamar is averaging 41.5 rpg and has attacked the offensive glass to the tune of 14, 20, 20 and 19 which has resulted in an average of 16.5 secondchance points per game. The Cardinals rank third in the SLC in offensive rebounds at Lamar In The NCAA Rankings Lamar enters the Nicholls State contest ranked in the top 60 in the NCAA in three categories: scoring offense-14th, assists per game-23rd and steals per game-25th. Sanders.643 FG Pct Ranks Eighth In The Nation... Sort Of Senior F Lamar Sanders ranks second in the Southland in FG pct with a.643 clip (he also is shooting.688 in 6 SLC games) and ranks eighth in the NCAA... sort of. His 92 field goals made average out to 4.8 per game, which is just shy of the 5.0 per game required by the NCAA. So, for him to appear in Thursday s leaders he needs to make at least eight shots on Thursday. The Magic Number is Lamar is 10-4 this season when scoring at least 70 points and 8-2 when holding its opponents under 70. The Cardinals are now in two seasons under coach Steve Roccaforte when reaching the 70-point plateau. Big Red s 92.6% FT Effort vs. SHSU Second-Highest In The Southland This Season In the span of 48 hours, Lamar went from converting 60 percent (second lowest all year) of its free throw attempts last Thursday at SFA to making a seasonhigh 92.6 percent on 25-of-27 in the overtime win over Sam Houston State. Aside from 3-for-3 and 7-for-7 efforts by McNeese State and Northwestern State, that figure is the second-highest in the SLC this year behind SELA s 92.9 (13-of-14) effort against Millsaps on Nov. 29. Close Ones The Cardinals have lost eight games this season but four have been especially agonizing for the LU faithful. In losses to Wyoming (75-71), Oral Roberts (65-57) and at Northern Illinois (65-63), Lamar was unable to maintain second-half leads in each contest. LU led Wyoming by 12 with 18:03 left and by 5 with 5:36 left; five days later against ORU the Cards had an 11-point lead in the first half and led with 7:41 to play before being surrendering 11-consecutive points over the next 3:41; and after taking a 13- point lead on NIU with 16:54 remaining, LU was outscored the rest of the way as the Huskies second-chance tip-in at the buzzer proved to be the difference. The Cardinals nearly pulled off a big upset last Tuesday at Texas Tech when the game was tied at 77 with 1:20 to play. But following a pair of Tech free throws with 22.5 seconds to play, Brandon McThay s 3-point attempt rimmed out as time expired. Forcing Turnovers The Cardinals defense has done a very good job in forcing turnovers this season. Lamar has forced 358 turnovers while committing 291 miscues. The Cardinals have forced their opponents into at least 20 turnovers 10 times this season, including three of the last four. UTSA, Rice, Lyon College, Louisiana College and LeTourneau all committed more turnovers than field goals made. Another 14-Point Comeback Win Lamar now has a pair of 14-point come-from-behind victories to its credit this season. On Saturday the Cardinals trailed Sam Houston State by 14 late in the first half and rallied to win in overtime The same thing happened three games earlier in LU s final non-conference contest against Utah Valley State. Both occurrances marked the largest margin overcome to win a game under second-year coach Steve Roccaforte.Since the season, they are tied for the sixth-largest deficit a Lamar team has come back from and won the game. Cards Turning Into A Second-Half Team While head coach Steve Roccaforte has preached to his players that they need to play 40 minutes every game, it might be comforting to the second-year coach to know that his halftime adjustments and encouraging words are having a positive effect on his troops. In the last five games, Lamar has shot 39 percent from the floor and 31 percent from outside in the first half, compared to 53 percent and 39 percent from those locations in the second half. Sharing The Rock - 75% of the Time In the win over Lyon College (12/29), Lamar assisted on 28 of its 40 baskets for a 70 percent rate - a season high. That is until Tuesday when the Cardinals dished out 21 assists on 28 buckets for a new seasonhigh of 75 percent. Other top assists-to-field goals made ratios included: 62.5% (15a to 24 fg) vs. Wyoming and 60.9 (14a to 23 fg) vs. Rice. Lamar With Three In SLC Top 15 In 3-Pointers Lamar is the only school in the SLC with three players ranking in the top 15 in 3-point field goal percentage. Currye Todd ranks first at 48.3%, Brandon McThay is second at 47.1 percent and Kenny Dawkins is rated 10th at 38.1%. As a team, the Cardinals are third at 35.9% and third in 3-pointers made per game at More On The 3-Ball Since Steve Roccaforte took over at Lamar last season, the Cardinals have made 416 total 3-pointers for an average of 8.2 per game. The season-high 16 made against Louisiana College on Dec. 8 are tied for the third-most in school history, 13th-most in the NCAA in and the second-most in the SLC this season. Only once in the past two seasons have the Cardinals failed to make less than four in a game (vs. NSU in the 2007 SLC Tournament). 7 Steve Roccaforte Head Coach, Second Season Embarking on his second year at the helm, Steve Roccaforte had Lamar University within a game of playing for the Southland Conference Tournament championship in his first year as head coach. Roccaforte guided the Cardinals to a overall record and an 8-8 mark in SLC play last year. Lamar finished tied for third in the SLC East Division. As the No. 7-seed in the SLC Tournament, Lamar upset No. 2-seed Sam Houston State in the opening round before falling to No. 3-seed Northwestern State in the semifinals. Among the Cardinals 15 victories was a thrilling overtime win over Brigham Young, who won over 20 games and was an at-large NCAA Tournament selection. Lamar ranked 12th in the NCAA in assists at 17.3 per game, 31st in threepointers made per game (8.3) and 52nd in three-point percentage (.379). Individually, Lamar Sanders led the SLC and ranked 12th in the NCAA in rebounding at 9.8 rpg. The Cardinals set a new single-season school record for three-point attempts (702) and posted the second-best mark in three-pointers made (266). Roccaforte s first recruiting class as the head coach paid immediate dividends as forward Lamar Sanders was named SLC newcomer of the year and earned second-team all-slc honors. Center James Davis was a third-team all- SLC performer and guard Darren Hopkins was an honorable mention selection. With the addition of another top-notch recruiting class, which includes an NJCAA second-team All-American and an honorable mention All-American, the future looks very bright for the Cardinals under Roccaforte s leadership. University president Dr. James Simmons and athletics director Billy Tubbs could not have found another person on the planet with as much enthusiasm, passion and desire to be the men s basketball coach at Lamar University than Steve Roccaforte, who was hired March 21, Roccaforte grew up in Port Arthur, was a prep basketball and baseball player at Thomas Jefferson High School and was a Lamar basketball fan for as long as he can remember. He attended every Cardinals game he could and was often a ball boy. I ve always stated that Lamar is the one place I wanted to be the head coach when I ve been asked that question as an assistant coach over the years, said Roccaforte. I grew up here, went to school here and this is home. I feel I know a lot of people here and I m very comfortable with the situation. There is a lot of support already in place from the community and administration. I ve always viewed this as a premier job with lots of potential. I watched all those good Lamar teams of the 1970s and 1980s, and I will do my best to get this program back to that level of success. Having worked along side some of the best college coaches in Billy Tubbs, John Calipari and Perry Clark, Roccaforte brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to job Lamar Cardinals Roster Roccaforte was listed as one of the top four assistant coaches ready to take over their own program according to Dan Wetzel of CBS Sportsline.com and was voted the seventh best assistant coach in the country by Basketball Times for the season. As reported by recruiting analyst Dave Telep, Roccaforte is one of the 25 hardest working coaches in the nation as well as one of the top 15 recruiters in the country. Clark Francis of HoopScoop listed Roccaforte as the top mid-major assistant coach in the country in Roccaforte is also no stranger to postseason play, having served on the staff of seven teams that extended their seasons. He has been to a pair of NCAA Tournaments, one each with Tulane and Memphis, and five NITs with Tulane, Wyoming and Memphis. Tulane advanced to the NIT Final Four at Madison Square Garden in New York in Memphis made a pair of trips to MSG including winning the NIT championship in Known as a relentless recruiter, Roccaforte put together Top 25 recruiting classes at Tulane, Memphis and Lamar. In fact, Memphis had the top rated recruiting class in Lamar s class in 2004, the first full recruiting class with Roccaforte on staff, was rated among the Top 10 in the country by HoopScoop Online. Roccaforte, who served on Billy Tubbs staff for three seasons ( ) as the recruiting coordinator, put together a stellar recruiting class for this season that included a pair of NJCAA All-Americans. The recruiting class also included the addition of five players that weigh over 230 pounds, which was a need area following the departure of the Cardinals top four inside players. Roccaforte spent three years as an assistant coach at the University of Memphis before coming home to Lamar. He helped the Tigers advance to the NIT final four in 2001, won the NIT championship in 2002 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2003 for the first time in seven years. The Tigers had Top 10 recruiting classes in all three years of his tenure, including the No. 1 rated class in 2001, and he recruited two McDonald s All-Americans. Prior to Memphis, Roccaforte spent two seasons as an assistant coach on the Wyoming staff ( ). The Cowboys were during his tenure which included a trip to the NIT, where they advanced to the second round. He helped put together the top-rated recruiting class in the Mountain West Conference in his first season. Before heading to Wyoming, Roccaforte worked at Tulane where he coordinated the Green Wave s recruiting activities. During his four years at Tulane, the Green Wave consistently ranked among the Top 25 recruiting classes in the nation and included an All-American and seven all-conference USA selections. The final recruiting class that he helped sign was ranked eighth nationally. Roccaforte was part of a Tulane staff which coached the Green Wave to three consecutive 20-win seasons during his tenure ( ). The Green Wave advanced to the NCAA Tournament Second Round in 1995, the NIT Final Four in 1996 and a second NIT appearance in Prior to coaching stints at Tulane and Wyoming, Roccaforte was an assistant coach at Centenary College for five seasons ( ). Centenary won its first TAAC regular-season championship during his tenure. Roccaforte has come full circle after beginning as a student assistant coach for three seasons at Lamar ( ). No. Name Pos.
