CONVOCATION CENTER GET CAUGHT UP The Broncos are 8-4 and are coming in to this game as winners of six of their last eight games and are fresh off a win over Ferris State Wednesday night, a game in which they allowed their least amount of points in a game all season. WMU started the season 7-2, equaling the best start in school history through nine games since the season. Its five-game winning streak was snapped by No. 8/9 Mississippi State at the Puerto Rico Classic, ending the longest winning streak since the 2008 season. Three of the four losses on the Broncos schedule have come against top-25 teams in No. 24 Michigan State, No. 20 Northwestern and No. 8 Mississippi State. SERIES HISTORY The overall series has been tight, with the Bobcats leading including a record in Athens. The Broncos have won two straight games and three of the last four meetings. The last meeting ended with a WMU win in Kalamazoo where Alex Morton tied for the team lead with 15 points and Miracle Woods added 13. Under head coach Shane Clipfell, the Broncos are 3-1 against the Bobcats. SHARING THE ROCK The Broncos are fourth in the MAC averaging 13.9 assists per game with junior Meredith Shipman leading the way with 3.6 per game and senior Alex Morton averaging 3.0. Morton is just eight assists away from reaching the 300 mark for her career, a milestone that nine others have done in WMU history. BLOCK PARTY Sophomore Teagan Reeves has been a force down low leading the team and the MAC with 26 blocks averaging 2.2 a game. She has recorded at least one block in ten of the team s 12 games this season and set a new career-high with five blocks against Bradley in the Broncos win over the Braves on Tuesday Nov. 24. Freshman Breanna Mobley is not far behind, averaging 1.4 blocks per game, a mark good for fourth in the MAC. As a team, the Broncos lead the MAC with 64 total blocks. PUERTO RICO RECAP The Brown & Gold went 1-2 at the Puerto Rico Classic facing some top-tier competition whose records combined to be at the conclusion of the weekend. The Broncos won in their first game over Gardner-Webb, a team who knocked off No. 20 North Carolina earlier this season. In their final two games, WMU fell to No. 8 Mississippi State and dropped the next game to reigning Atlantic Sun Conference champions Florida Gulf Coast. BOBCATS SCOUTING REPORT The Bobcats, who were picked to finish as MAC East regular season champions and MAC Tournament champions in the preseason coaches poll, are off to an 8-3 start and are coming into this game as winners of three straight and five of their last six games. Like the Broncos, they have a perfect home record (3-0) with wins over IPFW, St. Francis and Middle Tennessee State. Against the two like opponents in Florida Gulf Coast and IPFW, the Bobcats are 2-0 and Broncos are 1-1. The team lives from beyond the arc having made 93-of-313 this season, a mark that leads the MAC. The team is led by senior guard Kiyanna Black who is fourth in the MAC with 17.5 points per game. 2 SEASON STORYLINES A LOOK AT LAST YEAR The Broncos, who are coming off a overall, 11-7 MAC record last season were picked third in the West Division behind Eastern Michigan and Ball State. The campaign was one of Western Michigan s most successful in program history, as the team was one victory shy of tying the school record for wins (21) set in It s just the fourth 20-win season in school history. WMU also went 11-7 during MAC regular season play, finishing tied for second in the MAC West and fourth overall in the conference, the team s best finish since The Broncos won two games in the MAC Tournament for the first time since 2003, defeating Bowling Green and Central Michigan. THE HEAD COACH The Broncos are under the direction of fourth-year head coach Shane Clipfell. After inheriting a program that had only achieved 46 wins in the five seasons before, Clipfell has already amassed 44 wins in his first three seasons. WMU has increased its win mark every season under Clipfell, winning 11 games his first season, 13 games in and posting 20 wins this past year. Clipfell received a five-year contract extension in October 2015 that runs through May 31, WHAT WE RE WORKING WITH Western Michigan graduated four seniors last year, however returns three of its top four scorers from last year in senior trio, forward Miracle Woods (15 ppg/6.8 rpg), point guard Alex Morton (8 ppg/3.3 apg) and forward Jessica Jessing (7.3 ppg/4.5 rpg). The three seniors, as well as junior Meredith Shipman will serve as team captains this season. WMU also returns five sophomores - LaTondra Brooks, Aneisha Carlisle, Alexis Parks, Teagan Reeves and Najee Smith. Four freshmen - Logan McCane, Meredith Miller, Breanna Mobley and Deja Wimby also join the roster, as well as fifth-year senior Deborah Meeks who will be eligible to compete this season. First-year transfers Marley Hill (Cincinnati) and Asia Robeson (Auburn) will not be eligible until next season. WMU TO FACE FOUR TOP 30 TEAMS Four of Western Michigan s non-conference opponents for have a received Top 30 ranking in the AP Top 25 women s basketball coaches poll.two of those opponents will come in WMU s first four games (MSU and Northwestern). Mississippi State (12/20), Northwestern (11/22) and Michigan State (11/15) all landed in the top 25, currently the Bulldogs have earned a No. 10 ranking, the Wildcats are ranked No. 20 and MSU has moved up to No. 23. Florida Gulf Coast (12/21) is No. 28 in the poll. WMU DEFEATS UW PARKSIDE IN OPENER The Western Michigan women s basketball team officially got underway with a win over visiting Division II UW Parkside in the season opener Friday. Sophomore post Teagan Reeves scored a career-high 21 points on 9-of-19 shooting and grabbed six rebounds. She also set a career high for minutes played (28) and tied her career high for blocks (3). Junior guard Meredith Shipman knocked down 4-of-8 attempts from behind the arc and finished with 12 points, four assists and three steals. Western Michigan led Parkside at the end of the first quarter, but was outscored 11-5 in the second 10 minutes and the game was tied at the half, Western Michigan outscored the Rangers in the paint and scored 16 points off 21 turnovers. Shipman and senior Jessica Jessing (seven points) each finished with a game-high seven rebounds. WMU shot 34.4 percent from the floor. WMU DEFEATS LAKE ERIE IN EXHIBITION The Western Michigan women s basketball team scored 46 second half points on its way to a rout of visiting Division II opponent Lake Erie College in an exhibition outing last Sunday afternoon. Ten players saw action in the exhibition outing for Western Michigan. The Broncos went with a starting lineup of senior Alex Morton, junior Meredith Shipman and sophomore Najee Smith at the guard positions and senior Jessica Jessing and sophomore Teagan Reeves in the post. Freshman forward Breanna Mobley came off the bench to record 11 points and six rebounds, four of which were on the offensive end. Shipman led Western Michigan with a game-high 14 points, shooting 5-for-7 from the floor, including 4-for-5 from behind the arc. She also grabbed seven rebounds. Jessing tallied 11 points and tied Shipman with a team-high seven rebounds. The Broncos had 17 assists in the game, however turned the ball over 18 times. Western Michigan shot 36.5 percent from the floor and went 7-for-16 (43.4 %) from downtown. CLIPFELL PERFECT IN SEASON OPENERS Western Michigan head coach Shane Clipfell is 4-0 in season openers, becoming the first Bronco head coach to win their first four season openers. WESTERN MICHIGAN WOMEN S BASKETBALL WOODS NAMED SECOND TEAM ALL-MAC Junior forward Miracle Woods was named Second Team All-Mid-American Conference for the second straight season... it was the third MAC honor of her career, as she was also named to the All-Freshman team her first season... Woods led Western Michigan and ranked in the top 10 in the MAC in both scoring and rebounding during conference play, averaging 15.6 points and 7.8 rebounds per game... her field goal percentage was third best at 52.7 percent, she ranked fifth in blocks per game with 1.3 and 11th in free throw percentage, connecting on 71 of 90 attempts (78.9%)... her 71 made free throws were the second most during the regular season... Woods had five double-doubles against conference opponents. WOODS PRESEASON ALL-MAC SELECTION, ON THE RISE IN RECORD BOOK For the second year in a row, Western Michigan senior forward Miracle Woods has been named to the Preseason All-MAC Team. Woods enters her final season at WMU ranked 15th in career points (1,171), fifth in blocked shots (106) and eighth for career field goal percentage (49.8 percent), as well as free throws made (294). She has been a Second Team All-MAC selection at the season s end each of the past two years and was Honorable Mention All-MAC as a freshman. Woods averaged 15.4 points and 7.7 rebounds per game during conference play a year ago. BRONCOS PICKED THIRD IN MAC WEST PRESEASON POLL Western Michigan was picked third in the MAC West in the preseason coaches poll, behind Eastern Michigan and Ball State. BSU won the division last year and EMU and WMU tied for second. The Eagles however advanced to the MAC Tournament championship game before falling to Ohio. Behind WMU in fourth in the West is Toledo, followed by Central Michigan and Northern Illinois. Defending regular season and tournament champion Ohio was picked to win the East, followed by Akron, Bowling Green, Miami and Buffalo and Kent State tying for fifth. KAMRIN REED AND EMMA VANZANTEN SIGN NLI S On Nov. 11, high school seniors, 5-8 guard Kamrin Reed (Holt, Mich./Holt HS) and 6-4 post Emma VanZanten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview HS) officially committed to continue their academic and athletic careers at Western Michigan. Reed averaged 16.6 points per game as a sophomore and earned Class A all-state honorable mention honors before missing her junior year after tearing her ACL in the first game of the season. Vanzanten received offers from nine Division I schools and averaged nearly 11 points and 10 rebounds a game as a junior. TEAM CAPTAINS Seniors Jessica Jessing, Alex Morton and Miracle Woods, along with junior Meredith Shipman will serve as team captains for the season. THE SCHEDULE This year s slate features 13 regular season home games and one preseason exhibition. Western Michigan will be on the road at Michigan State, Northwestern, Bradley, IPFW and Loyola-Chicago. The highlight of the non-conference schedule comes at the end of December when the team travels to the Caribbean for the Puerto Rico Classic. WMU will play three games over three days in Puerto Rico, facing Gardner-Webb, Mississippi State and Florida Gulf Coast. Western Michigan will travel to reigning league champion Ohio to start its MAC schedule on Jan. 2. The Broncos host Bowling Green for their first home game, Wednesday, Jan. 6. MAC women s basketball teams will play 18-games over 10-weeks (9 home, 9 away) this season. Each school will play seven teams (5 in division, 2 cross division) twice and four (cross division) teams once. BRONCO HOME GAMES TO BE AIRED ON ESPN3 The Western Michigan Division of Intercollegiate Athletics has announced that home regular-season men s and women s basketball broadcasts, as well as other select Olympic sports contests will be broadcast live on ESPN3 for In all, roughly 35 WMU sporting events will be shown on ESPN3. The ESPN3 platform is a piece of a 13-year media rights deal that was agreed upon last August between the Mid-American Conference and ESPN and runs through MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT RUN Western Michigan was the No. 5 seed and defeated No. 12 Bowling Green in a home first round MAC Tournament game, to advance to a second round game in Cleveland Ohio at Quicken Loans Arena... WMU went on to defeat No. 9 Central Michigan in the second round before falling to No. 4 Buffalo in the quarterfinals, it was the first time since the 2003 championship season WMU had won two games in the tournament.

3 ELITE GROUP - WNIT HISTORY The Broncos became the fourth WMU team to play in the WNIT, joining the 1999, 2000 and 2004 squads and the Brown & Gold has a 2-3 all-time record in the tournament... in its last appearance in 2004, the Broncos posted wins over Louisville (63-61) and Charlotte (85-83, OT) before falling to Richmond (82-66) in the quarterfinals... WMU hosted Michigan in a first round loss in 1999 and fell at DePaul in 2000, DOING IT WITH DEFENSE The Broncos finished with an RPI ranking of 103, fourth highest in the MAC, and played a tough non-conference schedule that included road games at Big Ten opponents Ohio State and Michigan, as well as Horizon League champion Green Bay. WMU ranked 35th in the nation in scoring defense - only allowing 57.4 ppg - and 34h in field-goal percentage defense, holding opponents to 36.7 % from the floor. NOTABLE MAC WINS WMU s 30-point (82-52) win over BGSU last year was the program s largest margin of victory ever over the Falcons, and the Broncos first 30-point plus MAC victory since WMU has now won three straight against Bowling Green in Kalamazoo with victories in 2011, 2013 and WMU s win at Kent State was just its eighth ever in 24 total road trips at Kent State... the Broncos also defeated Kent State on the road in 2013, giving WMU back-toback road wins at Kent State for just the third time ever, and the first such stretch since 1990 & WMU s win over Central Michigan on Feb. 7 was the first for the Bronco program over its rival since Feb. 27, 2010, and a first ever for the Bronco senior class. BRONCOS ONLY TEAM TO DEFEAT TOP 4 SEEDS In Western Michigan and MAC West counterpart Eastern Michigan were the only two teams to defeat No. 1 seed Ohio in the regular season; WMU downed the Bobcats in Kalamazoo, 61-51, on Jan the Broncos are the only team to defeat each of the top four seeds - WMU split two-game series with Ball State, Akron and Buffalo... WMU defeated 10 of the 11 teams in the conference last season - the only team the Broncos couldn t get past was Toledo, who defeated the Brown & Gold twice. SUCCESSFUL 2015 SENIORS The 52 wins by the 2015 senior class were the most wins since the 2007 senior class (57)... seniors: Marquisha Harris, A.J. Johnson, Michelle O Brien, Jazmine Windham. RESPECTABLE NON-CONFERENCE LOSSES Western Michigan had four non-conferences lossesin , all of which came on the road and against formidable opponents... two of those were against Big Ten foes - Ohio State and Michigan, and a third was against the No. 1 ranked mid-major program Green Bay... the Broncos fourth non-conference loss was a tight decision at Stony Brook. MORTON GIVING MORE Point guard Alex Morton (#30) has added an offensive element last season and scored in double figures in 10 games... she was WMU s third-highest scorer with 8.0 ppg and leads the team with 109 assists... as a sophomore she was named the team s Most Improved Player... she dished out 116 assists in , the most by a Bronco since season... she tied a career high with nine assists last season at Miami. JESSING STEPS INTO STARTING ROLE After earning the team s Sixth Man Award her freshman and sophomore seasons, junior Jessica Jessing JJ (#52) has stepped into a starting role last season and was one of three players to start every game last season... she scored in double figures in 10 games, hitting a career-high 17 points against Central Michigan... she had her first careeer double-double with 11 points and a career-high 11 rebounds against Akron. Clipfell has strong ties in the state of Michigan, the Mid-American Conference and the Midwest and has worked at every level of women s basketball : Western Michigan is coming off one of its most successful seasons in program history, boasting a overall record - one victory shy of tying the school record for wins (21) set in The campaign was just the fourth 20-win season in school history. WMU went 11-7 during MAC regular season play, finishing tied for second in the MAC West and fourth overall in the conference, the team s best finish since The Broncos also won two games in the MAC Tournament for first time since 2003, defeating Bowling Green and Central Michigan. The success was rewarded as Western Michigan received a postseason bid, appearing in the WNIT vs. Arkansas State. It was just the fourth time WMU earned a spot in a WNIT bracket, joining the 1999, 2000 and 2004 squads. The Broncos finished with an RPI ranking of 103, fourth highest in the MAC, and played a tough non-conference schedule that included road games at Big Ten opponents Ohio State and Michigan, as well as Horizon League champion Green Bay. WMU ranked 35th in the nation in scoring defense - only allowing 57.4 ppg - and 34h in field-goal percentage defense, holding opponents to 36.7 % from the floor. Miracle Woods was named Second Team All-MAC for the second straight season. She led the MAC and ranked 36th in the nation for field-goal percentage, shooting 51.4 % : Western Michigan continued its ascend in Clipfell s second season, posting the most wins for program since with a overall record, 8-10 MAC record. The Broncos finished fourth in the MAC West after being picked fifth in the preseason poll. The team improved its overall win total & MAC win total by two from Clipfell s first season. The Broncos also improved their seeding by two from the previous year in the MAC Tournament, earning a first round home game as the No. 7 seed, where they defeated Miami, WMU went on to make its second straight trip to Cleveland in as many years under Clipfell, after failing to advance to Quicken Loans Arena for tournament play the previous four years prior to his tenure. Coming off a sweep of Toledo in the regular season for the first time since 2006, Western Michigan could not get past the Rockets for a third time in the year, bowing out in the second round of the tournament with a loss to UT. WMU s win on the road in the regular season was the Broncos first in Toledo since During the MAC season, Western Michigan protected its home floor, going 6-3 at University Arena and 1-0 in the MAC Tournament against its league counterparts. Regardless of venue, the Broncos were not easily disposed of, as five of the team s conference losses were by less than 10 points. WMU s offense had improved significantly, averaging 68.1 ppg in during MAC games, nearly 13 ppg more than the season before. For the second straight year, the low post duo of Miracle Woods and Marquisha Harris earned recognition from the conference. Woods was named Second Team All-MAC, becoming the first Bronco since 2008 to pick up the award, and Harris was named Honorable Mention All-MAC. Both were also MAC Player of the Week selections during the season. Progress could be seen across the board in Clipfell s first season. The team posted an overall and 6-10 MAC record, marking the most wins in five years. The team also advanced to the second round of the MAC Tournament for the first time since 2008 after defeating higher-seeded Eastern Michigan on the road in the first round. Another signature win for the Broncos was a victory over then eight-time defending regular season MAC champion Bowling Green in Kalamazoo. Clipfell s totals set a new mark for the most overall wins (11) and MAC wins (6) as a first-year head coach at Western Michigan. He also became the first women s basketball coach to win his first game at WMU (defeated American, 57-53) and win a MAC Tournament game in his first season. Two Broncos were recognized for their play by the conference. Sophomore forward Marquisha Harris was named Honorable Mention All-MAC and freshman center Miracle Woods was one of five named to the All-MAC Freshman team. PRIOR TO WMU: In the previous 14 years prior to Western Michigan, Clipfell worked in different capacities on a Suzy Merchant staff. He began with Merchant as an assistant at Eastern Michigan during the season and coached alongside Merchant at Michigan State for five years after Merchant took the Spartan helm in For the final three years, Clipfell served as the associate head coach at Michigan State, coordinating the program s recruiting efforts, including organizing official, unofficial, off-campus and home visits. In addition to recruiting, Clipfell focused on MSU s offensive game preparation, in-game adjustments and skill development of perimeter players. The Spartans captured their first outright Big Ten title in school history in and advanced to the NCAA Tournament four-straight seasons. While Clipfell was at Michigan State, the Spartans produced 17 All-Big Ten recognitions, 20 Academic All-Big Ten selections, and several players collected major Big Ten awards. Kalisha Keane was named Player of the Year in , after earning Sixth Player of the Year the season prior. The Spartans had back-to-back Defensive Players of the Year in Alyssa DeHaan ( ) and Lykendra Johnson ( ). Both Keane and DeHaan were named All-Americans following their senior seasons and DeHaan finished her career second all-time in NCAA history in blocked shots. In the nine seasons at Eastern Michigan, Clipfell helped build the Eagles into one of the top programs in the MAC. EMU compiled a record of (.608), including three 20-win seasons, three postseason appearances and two MAC West Division titles. The team claimed the MAC West Division and MAC Tournament championship for the first time in school history, earning the program s first-ever bid to the NCAA Tournament en route to a 22-8 record. Clipfell was the acting head coach at Eastern Michigan for all but four games of the season, while Merchant was on maternity leave. He guided the Eagles to a record and a second place finish in the MAC West with an 11-5 record. For his efforts, Clipfell received votes for MAC Coach of the Year honors. Individually, senior Sarah VanMetre became EMU s first women s basketball player to be named an Academic All-American, senior Patrice McKinney was named MAC Defensive Player of the Year and freshman Alyssa Pittman was named MAC Freshman of the Year. PREVIOUS HEAD COACHING EXPERIENCE: Prior to coaching at the Division I level, Clipfell spent five seasons at Glen Oaks Community College, including three as head coach, and 11 years as the varsity head coach at Colon High School. After spending two seasons as an assistant at Glen Oaks Community College ( ), Clipfell took over the program in 1996 and tallied a overall record. His 1997 team finished with a No. 3 final ranking in the NJCAA after a 28-8 record and a fifth-place finish in the NJCAA Tournament. For his efforts, he landed numerous coaching awards, being named Coach of the Year for the Michigan Community College Athletic Association, the Western Conference, and the National District. In addition, he also earned the NJCAA Tournament Sportsmanship Award. Clipfell coached a NJCAA second-team All-America player in 1997, and a third-team All-America honoree in While at Colon High School ( ), Clipfell tallied a career varsity head coaching record. His teams captured seven conference championships, three district championships, two regional championships and one Final Four appearance. He assisted in seven of his players receiving collegiate scholarships. He was named the area Coach of the Year by the Sturgis Journal in 1990 and He was also named the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan Regional Coach of the Year in 1992, 1994 and In 2005, Clipfell was inducted into the Colon High School Athletic Hall of Fame for his achievements. In 1996, Clipfell coached an all-star team for 10 days in Austria and then was selected to coach Athletes In Action for a summer tour in Bolivia in He also served as the co-director of Glen Oaks Community College summer basketball camps for three years. PERSONAL: Clipfell (DOB: 8/29/63) earned a bachelor of science degree in communications at Eastern Michigan in Before Clipfell joined the coaching profession full-time at the collegiate level, he worked in the manufacturing industry.
