Compassionate. Dedicated. These are just a few words that come to mind when talking with Jim Jabir. On April 8, 2003, the University of Dayton introduced Jabir as the women s basketball team s eighth head coach and first male head coach in the history of the program. Since taking over as Dayton s head coach in 2003, Jim Jabir has earned a mark of at UD and is in 22 years overall. With two Women s National Invitation appearances, two Atlantic 10 Semifinal appearances (the program s highest-ever finish), and 11 A-10 All-Conference performers under his belt while at the helm of the Flyers, Jabir has undoubtedly led the University of Dayton to its most successful stint in modern program history. Jabir is focused on making success more of the rule than the exception and the results speak for themselves. The Flyers have finished the last two seasons with 20-wins or more and have made back-to-back appearances in the postseason WNIT. When UD made its second-straight appearance in the Atlantic 10 Semifinals in 2009, defeating nationally-ranked Xavier in the quarterfinals behind a group of underclassmen; the win marked a significant moment for a team and a program on the rise. The Flyers record in was the second-most wins since the program turned Division I and UD finished the year with most postseason individual honors ever. It s no surprise that Jabir was named the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year after mentoring the Flyers to a modern-program record 25-9 record including an 12-6 mark in games decided by 10 points or less. Dayton went on to earn their second postseason berth in modern history with a trip to the WNIT. UD improved by 11.5 victories from to on the strength of a schoolrecord 16-game winning streak that was the longest in the nation at one point. The Flyers also earned their first ever votes in the AP Top 25 Poll in as they were listed in two different weeks. UD has been one of the most improved teams in the nation under the direction of Jabir. In addition to the strides made in , UD had the fourth best single-season turnaround in the nation in the season with an improvement of nine wins over the previous campaign. Jabir continued the trend in with an improvement of five more wins, giving UD the second best improvement over a two-year span in the nation. The season also saw two Flyers earn Atlantic 10 All-Conference accolades as UD finished sixth in a conference that sent five teams to postseason play. Dayton also advanced to the quarterfinals of the A-10 Tournament and finished with a winning record for the first time in five years. UD returned to the Atlantic 10 Quarterfinals at the conclusion of the season marking the third time in school history that the Flyers had advanced past their opening round in the Atlantic 10 Tournament. Dayton played close games throughout the campaign as 15 of its 31 games were decided by single digits despite having just one senior in the starting lineup. She ranked among the Top 70 players nationally in the Class of 2007 according to the Blue Star Report. UD SIGNS CASSIE SANT TO RECRUITING CLASS With only one scholarship available, University of Dayton women s basketball coach Jim Jabir and his staff landed one of the top local basketball products in several years when Fairmont High School star Cassie Sant signed her letter of intent to attend UD and play basketball for the Flyers. Sant, Fairmont s much sought-after 6-foot-2 center, is a three-year starter and averaged a team-high 14 points and nine rebounds as a junior last season, leading the Firebirds to a 22-4 record. Just as impressive, she also has a 3.7 grade point average.on the national recruiting rankings, Sant is rated the ninth-best power forward in the nation and the 82nd best prospect overall by the ESPNU HoopsGirlz 100. In her junior season, Sant was an Honorable Mention All-Ohio selection. She is a two-time First Team All-Greater Western Ohio Conference selection. With just one recruit the Flyers are still one of six A-10 schools ranked in the All-Star Girls Report (ASGR) Top 100 recruiting classes. THE EUROPEAN INFLUENCE The freelance style of Dayton s offense comes from a theory of attacking the defense with momentum and fluidity. UD Head Coach Jim Jabir got the idea for the new offense from former Marquette men s basketball player Tony Miller. Miller (point guard from ) and Jabir (coach from ) were both at Marquette and have kept in touch while Miller has been playing in Europe for several years. Miller came to Dayton and taught Jabir and his staff the new system before the Flyers 10-day trip to Europe during summer FOLLOW THE FLYERS Flyer fans can follow the UD women s basketball team on Twitter and Facebook.
