In Review 9 Record Book 10 About Grove City College Schedule 12 The James E. Longnecker Competition Pool is one of the nation s top small-college aquatic facilities. The 8-lane facility is regarded as one of the fastest pools in the region and is reserved solely for use by the College s swimming and water polo athletes. The shallow end of the Pool is seven feet; thus the Pool is able to host several Collegiate Water Polo Association events that are restricted from shallow-deep pools. Since 2000, Grove City College has hosted several CWPA championship events. In 2008, Grove City hosted the CWPA Western Division Championships. The James E. Longnecker Competition Pool is 25 yards in length and 56 feet wide. It holds 408,913 gallons of water. The seating capacity of the Pool area is approximately

3 WOMEN S WATER POLO 2010 HEAD COACH JON MILLER A new era of Grove City College women s water polo begins this season as Jon Miller takes over as the Wolverines head women s water polo coach. He is the third head coach in program history and is looking to take Grove City s rising program to even greater heights as the Wolverines begin their second decade of intercollegiate competition. Miller joined the Grove City athletic department in August 2009 as head women s water polo coach and assistant swimming and diving coach. He came to Grove City after spending the academic year as assistant men s and women s water polo coach at California Baptist University. A native of Fresno, Calif., Miller is a 2008 graduate of California Baptist. He earned four letters as a goalkeeper for CBU s men s water polo team. During his playing career, Miller racked up a school-record 1,025 saves. As a junior in 2007, he set a single-game school record with 22 saves against Pepperdine. As a junior he led all of collegiate water polo (both NCAA and NAIA) in saves with a school-record 415 stops. He owns each of the three highest single-season save totals in CBU history. He helped California Baptist compile 86 victories during his four seasons. Miller earned a bachelor s degree in kinesiology from California Baptist. He completed a master of science degree in kinesiology. He also is an assistant professor of physical education and exercise science at Grove City. He recently completed his first season as assistant swimming and diving coach and helped Grove City s women s and men s teams compile a combined 24-3 dual-meet record. 4 GROVE CITY COLLEGE 2010 SEASON PREVIEW SEASON PREVIEW Grove City Continuing Its Climb Into Division III s Elite The Grove City College women s water polo team enters its second decade of intercollegiate competition with seven returning letterwinners back in the fold. While many familiar faces dot the 2010 roster, two significant changes are also quite notable with the program. First, Jon Miller takes over as head coach after spending time as an assistant coach at his alma mater, California Baptist. Secondly, the Wolverines schedule features a new look this spring. For the first time, Grove City will compete in a College Water Polo Association Division III conference after battling against Division I and II foes in the CWPA Western Division for the past several years. Grove City is coming off the finest won-loss record in program history and appears to be in great position to surpass that level of success in Grove City returns five of its top six scorers along with a pair of experienced goalkeepers. Versatile senior Kate Stiebler is a two-time Association of College Water Polo Coaches All- American. She is a three-year letterwinner. Junior Brittany LaPalme returns for her third season at Grove City. She is a two-year starter and letterwinner for the Wolverines. Several other contributors are also back and are expected to step forward in Seniors Kate Stiebler and Amanda Thompson both return for their fourth year as starters after assembling outstanding junior seasons. Stiebler led Grove City with 43 goals and 21 assists while also accumulating 48 steals. She earned Division III All-America Honorable Mention from the Association of College Water Polo Coaches following the season. Thompson returns after racking up 34 goals during the 2009 campaign. She will be counted on at both ends of the pool again this season. Juniors Lauren Baur and Brittany LaPalme return as starters after posting strong sophomore seasons. Baur recorded 52 steals and also won a team-high 50 sprints in Like Baur, LaPalme is a two-year letterwinner and will be counted on at both ends of the pool. LaPalme tallied 13 goals and eight assists in Junior Allison White emerged as one of Grove City s top reserves last year and earned her first 4

5 WOMEN S WATER POLO SEASON PREVIEW New Coach Looks To Lead Veteran Squad In New Conference letter. She will challenge for a starting position this spring. Two sophomores are back after starting as rookies in Second-year performer Chelsea Johnson fired in 36 goals as a freshman starter. A force at the 2-meter position, she also drew 29 kickouts last year. She will likely start again this spring. Sophomore Amy Fleming saw time in both the field and in goal last year and is expected to again be a key contributor. Fleming led Grove CIty in saves last year and could see time in goal as well as in the field. Newcomers Amanda Brush, Amy Fallas, Amanda Johnston, Michelle Shimrock, Andrea Wilson and Kaitlin Yeatts will all look to break into the lineup during the 2010 season. 9 WOMEN S WATER POLO IN REVIEW The Grove City College women s water polo team concluded its first decade of intercollegiate competition with one of the finest seasons in program history. Grove City compiled a 13-7 record against Division III opponents and capped the season with an eighth-place finish at the Collegiate III Championships. Senior Liza McRuer and junior Kate Stiebler earned Honorable Mention All-America from the Association of College Water Polo Coaches following the season. After opening with a rugged early-season schedule that included a trip to California and bouts with Michigan and Indiana, Grove City rolled past Colorado College March 12 in the home opener. Freshman Chelsea Johnson fired in four goals to help the Wolveriens to the win. Setbacks against Division II foes Gannon and Mercyhurst in CWPA Western Division play fueled the Wolverines late-season surge. Grove City began a season-best seven-match win streak March 28 by pulling out an win over archrival W&J. Amanda Thompson tied the match at 10 with a goal while moments later, Stiebler scored off a set play with 22 seconds left to give Grove City the dramatic win. The Wolverines then concluded Western Division play with a a 13-3 win at Chatham March 31. Later in the week, the Wolverines pushed their win streak to seven by going 5-0 at the Carthage Invitational in Kenosha, Wis. Grove City picked up wins over Wheaton, Macalester, Colorado College and Carthage in the tournament s first four games. Grove City then sewed up the tournament title by downing W&J Six different Grove City players scored in the win, led by Johnson s three goals. Following a sixth-place finish at the Western Division Championships at the University of Indiana, Grove City qualified for the Collegiate III Championships in Thousand Oaks, Calif. The Wolverines began the tournament with a pair of matches against California powers Occidental and UC-Santa Cruz in pool play. Grove CIty then wrapped up pool play with a 7-4 win over Macalester. Thompson scored three times in the win while Lauren Baur added a goal and a game-high five steals. The Wolverines racked up 38 shots against W&J in the fourth match of the tournament but dropped an 8-7 decision. 11 WOMEN S WATER POLO 2010 ABOUT GROVE CITY COLLEGE The beautifully landscaped campus of Grove City College stretches over 150 acres and includes 27 neo-gothic buildings. It is considered one of the loveliest in the nation. While the College has changed to meet the needs of the society it serves, its basic philosophy has remained unchanged since its founding in It is a Christian, liberal arts institution, dedicated to the principle of providing the highest quality education at the lowest possible cost. Wishing to remain truly independent and to retain its distinctive qualities as a private school governed by private citizens (trustees), it is one of few colleges in the country that does not accept federal funds. Affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), but not narrowly denominational, the College believes that to be well-educated a student should be exposed to the central ideas of the Judeo-Christian tradition. Grove City College offers undergraduate degrees in liberal arts, sciences, engineering, business, and music and is distinguished as a national leader in education. Grove City s programs in electrical and mechanical engineering are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission Board of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. The big business school curriculum prepares students for today s global business reality. An extensive variety of internship opportunities are provided across the curriculum. Grove City College wants its students to be prepared in this age of mobile information technology. Each entering freshman receives a notebook computer which is his or hers to keep upon graduation with a four-year degree. ABOUT THE COLLEGE Grove City College s Breen Student Union This is part of the Information Technology Initiative, a total program integrating technology across the curriculum. The College believes that its student body has a unique mix of talents and abilities. Its Career Services program helps students identify those key assets during the first year and then builds a four-year strategy to help them pursue a satisfying career. Personal counseling, professional speakers, databases, alumni contacts, summer internships, corporate visits, employer presentations and more are incorporated into the career preparation experience. Grove City follows the semester calendar plan, in addition to offering two-week sessions in January and May. Most of the 2,500 students live in separate men s and women s dormitories. The rest are local commuters or married students. A full program of cultural, professional, athletic and social activities is offered, including 19 intercollegiate varsity athletic teams. Grove City, a town of 8,100 people, is located 60 miles north of Pittsburgh. It is located near Interstates 79 and 80 and has a municipal airport.
