4 GROVE CITY COLLEGE SEASON PREVIEW SEASON PREVIEW Familiar faces abound for the Grove City College softball program as the Wolverines prepare for the 2014 season. Ten letterwinners return from last season, including seven players who started regularly in Although the Wolverines feature a new head coach, that person is also no stranger to the program as former standout Christine Slater has taken over for the 2014 season. The Wolverines feature plenty of depth, experience and versatility in both the infield and outfield. Three players who started extensively in 2013 are back in the outfield - junior Erica Gmuer, junior Caitlyn Vidovic and sophomore Megan Lynskey. Gmuer made 30 starts as a sophomore and is the incumbent in center field. Lynskey and Vidovic may have the inside track to start in the corner outfield spots after playing regularly last year. Lynskey made an immediate impact as a freshman by starting 25 games and hitting.384. Vidovic made 22 starts last year and is a two-year letterwinner. She could also help fill the void in the pitcher's circle this year. Junior Caitlyn Vidovic is a returning starter in the outfield for Grove City. Junior catcher Sarah Morris is a two-year starter behind the plate for Grove City. Versatile senior Baylie Jones, sophomore Emily Rothbard, freshman Madison Brubaker and freshman Allison O'Hearn will all contend for time in the outfield this year. In the infield, juniors Kelsey Shirey and Allison Rayburn return up the middle to give Grove City a strong foundation. Shirey is a two-year starter at shortstop and is a two-time All-Presidents' Athletic Conference honoree. She hit.441 last year while also posting a.696 slugging percentage. Rayburn has sparked Grove City from the top of the lineup in each of her first two seasons. She started at third base as a rookie before settling in at second base last year. Rayburn teams with Shirey to give Grove City one of the top returning keystone combinations in the region. Jones played in 26 games last year and could play second, third and shortstop. Sophomore Casey Woodcock also returns after starting at both first and third base last year. She hit.264 in 27 starts as a freshman. Sophomore Brianna Bals will also look to break into the lineup after playing a reserve last year. First-year sophomore infielder Allie Schellin and freshman Alaina Kunselman will also challenge for time this year. 4
5 SOFTBALL 2014 SEASON PREVIEW Junior Sarah Morris returns for her third season behind the plate. A two-year starter and letterwinner, Morris hit.306 last year and will look to remain a force in the middle of the lineup. Freshman Katy Gibson will push Morris at catcher. While Grove City features plenty of experience around the diamond, the Wolverines will have to answer questions in the middle of the diamond as the roster features players with a total of 19 collegiate innings pitched to their credit. Rothbard pitched 12 innings in relief last season while Vidovic threw seven relief innings in Both players could be integral parts of the pitching staff this season. Several newcomers are also in the pitching mix, including freshman Erika Aughton, Katie Watts and Aimee Wootton. Grove City opens its season with a 10-game trip to Clermont, Fla., in early March. The northern portion of the schedule begins March 18 at Pitt-Greensburg. The Wolverines will open their home schedule March 20 against Hiram in non-conference play. Presidents Athletic Conference action starts March 29 with a doubleheader against visiting Saint Vincent. Grove City concludes the regular season April 26 with a doubleheader at Thiel. The top four teams will qualify for the season-ending conference tournament. Sophomore Emily Rothbard will look to provide leadership to a young Grove City pitching staff in She appeared in 11 games last season as a rookie ROSTER No. Name Pos. Yr. 9 SOFTBALL 2014 THE PRESIDENTS ATHLETIC CONFERENCE Founded in 1955, the Presidents Athletic Conference continues its mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Comprised of 10 select private colleges and universities - Bethany College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Thomas More College, Washington & Jefferson College, Waynesburg University and Westminster College - the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high-pressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member s philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself. Thorn Field is home to the College s football and track and field teams. The College installed CSTurf at Robert E. Thorn Field. CSTurf is a synthetic playing surface that features polyethylene LSR grass fibers and a rubber infill system. The College also installed lights and resurfaced the 8-lane track around the field. Grove City also reconfigured its setup for track meets during these renovations. In 2011, the College installed a new state-ofthe-art scoreboard and new bleachers on the visitors side at Thorn Field. These upgrades benefit the entire campus community as the complex is used by both the College s club sports teams and its intramural program, along with the varsity teams. The track is also available for use by recreational walkers and joggers. The complex also features 10 all-weather tennis courts next to the stadium. Phillips Field House, located at the north end of the complex, features several locker rooms, an athletic training room, meeting rooms and coaches offices. It is used by the football, track and tennis programs throughout the academic year. The Physical Learning Center (PLC) houses the Grove City College Arena, home to the College s basketball and volleyball programs. In summer 2012, the College renovated the Arena by installing new lighting and a new playing floor. In recent years, the Arena has also received new scoreboards and scorers tables. The James E. Longnecker Pool is one of the nation s premier small-college venues for both swimming and diving and water polo. The home of Grove City s football and track and field teams, Robert E. Thorn Field has received numerous renovations in recent years. In addition, the PLC features the James E. Longnecker Pool, one of the premier aquatic facilities in the region. Each year, Grove City hosts the Presidents Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at the state-of-the-art facility. In 2012, the College also hosted the Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III Championships at the James E. Longnecker Pool. The PLC also features a second pool, the Recreational Pool, which is used by members of the College community year-round. A fitness room featuring aerobic and Cybex equipment and a separate weight room with free and mechanized weights are also keystone areas of the facility. The PLC also features six racquetball/handball courts as well as two adjacent intramural rooms. The intramural rooms feature four basketball courts, four indoor tennis courts, four volleyball courts, an indoor track and two indoor jumping pits. The College installed new synthetic flooring and several new electronic scoreboards throughout the intramural rooms. The Physical Learning Center houses the athletic training room, locker rooms and offices for coaches and physical education faculty. The College recently constructed a new office suite for coaches and athletic administration, while also incorporating its Athletic Hall of Fame area. Grove City s outdoor athletic facilities have also received numerous upgrades in recent years. The varsity soccer field, College Field, was expanded and re-sodded during the summer of College Field also received a new press box during the summer of Meanwhile, Grove City s baseball and softball facilities recently received major facelifts as new dugouts, new fencing and electronic scoreboards were installed on both fields.
