BarbyW&J BREEZES PAST PENN STATE-BEHREND IN 2010 OPENER (3/4) WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Senior Jessica Barby (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) {right} fired in a career-high seven goals to help Washington & Jefferson open its 2010 women's water polo season with a 13-2 victory over Penn State-Behrend on Thursday evening at the Henry Memorial Natatorium. The win marked for the first at W&J for Head Coach Greg Jones. W&J led 2-1 after one period and then tacked on 11 of the game's final 12 goals. The Presidents held the Lions (0-1) scoreless for the second and third periods. Junior Kate Van Schaik (Arnold, Pa./St. Mary's) added three goals and one assist, while senior Katie Silvestri (Kingsville, Md./McDonogh) contributed two goals and two assists. Silvestri also paced the squad's strong defensive effort. Juniors Caitlin Brown (Milford, Ohio/Milford) and Katie Wieber (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen) both added two assists. Senior Polly Ziegler (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) earned the win in goal after stopping seven shots.

15 Washington & Jefferson continues its season-opening weekend tomorrow night with a 7:00 pm match versus Wheaton (Ill.) at Chatham. W&J WOMEN S WATER POLO ATOP CWPA PRESEASON POLL (1/13) W&J Women's Polo WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Collegiate Water Polo Association released its 2010 women s preseason polls on Wednesday and Washington & Jefferson College received a pair of mentions. The Presidents enter the 2010 season as the No. 1 ranked team in the inaugural CWPA Division III Top 5 poll. Nine teams are eligible for the poll under the newly-created organization which will compete for a spot in the Division III National Collegiate Championship in May. Grove City is the No. 2 team in the poll and is followed by Carthage (Ill.), Macalester (Minn.) and Wheaton (Ill.). Connecticut College, Penn State-Behrend, Chatham and Utica also compete in the conference s inaugural season. The change marked the first time an NCAA conference has divided its membership based on institutional affiliation without a NCAA Division II or Division III championship in the sport. In addition, Washington & Jefferson is the eighth-ranked team in the Division III National Top 10 poll. Pomona-Pitzer tops the poll and is followed by California Lutheran, Occidental, Redlands, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Whittier, Chapman, W&J, Grove City and Macalester. W&J enters the season with a new head coach, Greg Jones. Jones was hired at the college in December after serving as the head men s and women s water polo coach at Salem International. Jones returns five seniors this spring, including All-America goalie Polly Ziegler (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) and Academic All-American Jessica Barby (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson). Ziegler amassed a career-high 264 saves a year ago, while Barby contributed 31 goals, 37 assists and 14 steals. W&J opens its season on March 4th when it hosts Penn State-Behrend at 7:00 pm at the Henry Memorial Natatorium. GREG JONES NAMED W&J HEAD WATER POLO COACH (12/1) W&J

16 WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson College Director of Athletics Bill Dukett announced Greg Jones as the Presidents Head Men s and Women s Water Polo Coach on Tuesday afternoon. Jones becomes the fourth water polo coach in school history. He replaces Vaughan Smith, who resigned following the fall men s season to pursue other interests. Jones has served as the head men s and women s water polo coach at NCAA Division II Salem International University (W.Va.) since July. Greg is a dedicated coach who will be a great asset to our water polo student-athletes, said Dukett. He has shown a strong work ethic at both Salem International and Ohio University and we believe he will help our men s and women s programs achieve success on the regional and national levels. We expect him to recruit talented student-athletes who want to continue their water polo careers on the college level. Jones graduated from Ohio University in 2007 and earned a bachelor s degree in exercise physiology. He also obtained a master s degree in coaching education from OU a year later. Jones thesis was entitled The Disparities of Division I, II, and III Collegiate Varsity Water Polo teams throughout the United States of America where he surveyed all NCAA varsity coaches and analyzed reasons of their performances. While at Ohio University, he was President of the OU Men s Water Polo Club. Jones was a three-time All-Conference choice and a 2006 National Collegiate Club Honorable-Mention All- America selection. He was also instrumental in helping the women s water polo club program as a student as the team s head coach from During the academic year, Jones worked as a graduate assistant for OU s Fitness Department and the Bobcats swimming and diving team. He also spent one year prior to his arrival at Salem International as a personal trainer and metabolic tester at Life Time Fitness in Deerfield, Ohio. Jones is an active runner and has competed in 14 marathon events since Aliased Page: [Not Defined]
