1 PENN STATE-BEHREND TOPS W&J IN ECAC VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT (11/12) ERIE, Pa. - The Washington & Jefferson College volleyball team was defeated by Penn State- Behrend, 3-2 (25-19, 21-25, 13-25, 25-19, 15-13), in the opening round of the ECAC Division III Volleyball Tournament on Wednesday evening. The third-seeded Lions (23-9) roared back from a 2-1 set deficit to earn the victory. Penn State- Behrend now advances to the ECAC Tournament semifinals, while the sixth-seeded Presidents' season ends at overall. Junior outside hitter Monika Linden (Manassas, Va./Osbourne Park) and sophomore middle hitter Courtney Sherwin (Greensburg, Pa./Latrobe) both collected a team-high 11 kills for W&J. Linden added five blocks and four service aces, while Sherwin notched six blocks and one ace. Sophomore outside hitter Courtney Holdrieth (Coraopolis, Pa./West Allegheny) had 22 digs to go with her three kills and two blocks, while junior libero Nellica Davis (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier) amassed a team-high 26 digs. The Presidents made their third appearance in the ECAC Tournament in the past four seasons. THREE W&J TEAMS HEADING TO ECAC POSTSEASON PLAY (11/10) WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) released its postseason tournament brackets on Monday and three Washington & Jefferson College teams have been selected. The W&J volleyball squad earned the No. 6 seed for the ECAC Division III Tournament and will travel to Penn State-Behrend for a 7:00 pm match in Erie, Pa., Wednesday night. The Presidents are making their third appearance in the past four seasons. Head Coach Fred Wallace guided W&J to a third-place finish in the Presidents Athletic Conference standings and a record overall in The Presidents field hockey team was awarded the No. 7 seed for the ECAC Division III Mid- Atlantic Tournament and travels to Wilkes on Wednesday afternoon for a 2:00 pm match. W&J is making its second consecutive appearance in the ECAC Tournament. W&J finished as the runner-up in the Empire 8 Conference Tournament for the second consecutive season, falling to Stevens by a 3-1 margin. Last year, Stevens edged W&J, 1-0, in the ECAC first round at Cameron Stadium. That match marked the first postseason match in

2 W&J field hockey history. Washington & Jefferson is led by 2007 E8 Coach of the Year Jomara Coghlan. Finally, the men s soccer team received its fifth postseason bid in the past six seasons, earning the No. 7 seed for the ECAC Division III Tournament. The Presidents will travel to Frostburg State for a 6:00 pm match in Maryland on Wednesday. Head Coach Ian McDonald has led the Presidents to their third ECAC bid since W&J has also played in the 2005 and 2007 NCAA Division III Tournaments during that period. The men s soccer program dropped a heartbreaking 2-1 double-overtime decision at Westminster in the PAC Tournament Championship Match Saturday evening. SUNY-IT LINDEN AND MISKIS-NEILSON EARN ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT HONORS (11/6) WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Five Washington & Jefferson College student-athletes earned Academic All-District II College Division honors on Thursday by ESPN The Magazine and the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). W&J has now had a total of 10 student athletes

3 receive recognition for their academic and athletic achievements this fall. The District II region includes all NCAA Division II, Division III and NAIA colleges and universities in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Junior volleyball players Monika Linden (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) and Anna Miskis- Neilson (Pittsburgh, Pa./City Charter) received third-team honors. Linden has quickly developed into one of the premiere strikers on the W&J squad, leading the team in kills with 276. She ranks 10th in the PAC in that same category. The junior accounting major has also accumulated 55 service aces on the year, which ranks second among PAC servers. Linden, who has maintained a 3.33 GPA at W&J, was named as the PAC Volleyball Player of the Week on September 15th. Miskis-Neilson has maintained a 3.62 GPA, while studying child development education at Washington & Jefferson. The junior ranks third on the team in service aces with 28, while also helping the defensive unit by recording 149 digs. The Presidents will take on No. 2 seed Thomas More on Friday evening at Westminster in a PAC semifinal contest. The winner of the match will advance to Saturday s PAC Championship match, which is scheduled for 1:00 pm in Buzz Ridi Gymnasium on the campus of Westminster College. PRESIDENTS FALL TO THOMAS MORE IN PAC SEMIFINALS (11/7) NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Second-seeded Thomas More claimed the third and fourth sets to record a 3-1 victory (25-18, 18-25, 26-24, 25-14) over third-seeded Washington & Jefferson on Friday evening in the semifinals of the Presidents Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament at Westminster s Buzz Ridl Gymnasium. The Saints (28-6) will now take on top-seeded Westminster (23-10) in the PAC Tournament Championship Match tomorrow at 1:00 pm. The winner receives the league s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

4 Thomas More was led by Hillary Monnin s 13 kills and eight digs. Katie Sullivan added 12 kills, while Michelle Clifford collected 37 assists. Junior middle hitter Samantha Butler (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) {left} paced Washington & Jefferson with 10 kills and seven blocks. Junior outside hitter Monika Linden (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) also added 10 kills, while sophomore outside hitter Courtney Holdrieth (Coraopolis, Pa./West Allegheny) had nine kills and 11 digs. Senior right-side hitter Summer Baumgard (Vincent, Ohio/Warren) and sophomore middle hitter Courtney Sherwin (Greensburg, Pa./Latrobe) both contributed six kills. Sophomore setter Mia Serine (Mohnton, Pa./Holy Name) accumulated 31 assists and six digs and junior libero Nellica Davis (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier) finished with a team-high 13 digs. Washington & Jefferson (17-14) will await word Monday on a possible bid to the ECAC Division III Tournament. The Presidents have competed in the postseason tournament in two of the last three years. W&J VOLLEYBALL ADVANCES TO PAC SEMIFINALS (11/4) WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Sophomore middle hitter Courtney Sherwin (Greensburg, Pa./Latrobe) {right} collected 10 kills and 10 digs to help third-seeded Washington & Jefferson defeat sixth-seeded Grove City, 3-1 (25-14, 23-25, 25-13, 25-19), on Tuesday in the opening round of the PAC Volleyball Tournament at the Henry Memorial Center. The Presidents (17-13) will now advance to the PAC Semifinals Friday at Westminster where they will take on second-seeded Thomas More. The match time will be announced Wednesday. Sherwin added four digs and one service ace for the Presidents, while junior middle hitter Samantha Butler (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) added a team-high 12 kills. Butler also posted four blocks. Sophomore setter Mia Serine (Mohnton, Pa./Holy Name) dished out 38 assists and added 11 digs and two blocks, while sophomore outside hitter Courtney Holdrieth (Coraopolis, Pa./West Allegheny) contributed finished with eight kills, five digs and three blocks.

W&J FALLS TWICE AT ELIZABETHTOWN TOURNAMENT (11/1) ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Washington and Jefferson College volleyball team dropped two non-conference matches on Saturday afternoon at the Elizabethtown Halloween Tournament, falling to Gallaudet in its first match, 3-2 (25-17, 12-25, 20-25, 25-20, 12-15) and Eastern in the second contest, 3-0 (23-25, 10-25, 20-25). Junior Samantha Butler (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) posted seven kills and five blocks against Gallaudet, while sophomore Courtney Sherwin (Greensburg, Pa./Latrobe) finished the match with five kills, five blocks and three service aces. Sophomore setter Mia Serine (Mohnton, Pa./Holy Name) handed out 34 assists, while junior Anna Miskis-Neilson (Pittsburgh, Pa./City Charter) led the defense with 15 digs in the loss. Sherwin continued her offensive display for the Presidents in match two, recording eight kills and seven blocks against Eastern. Serine also dished out 21 assists in the loss. The defense was led by junior Nellica Davis (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier), who recorded 11 digs, while Miskis-Neilson added seven digs of her own. With the losses the Presidents bring their overall record to 16-13, including a 10-4 mark in the Presidents Athletic Conference. The Presidents will begin PAC tournament action next week The conference office will release more information regarding the post season tournament upon completion of the regular season schedule, which concludes this afternoon. W&J SPLITS OPENING MATCHES AT ELIZABETHTOWN HALLOWEEN TOURNAMENT (10/31) ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - Washington & Jefferson College split a pair of matches on Friday at the opening round of the Elizabethtown College Halloween Volleyball Tournament.

6 The Presidents (16-11) dropped their opening match to SUNY-Cortland, 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-15), but bounced back to top the host Blue Jays by a 3-1 margin (25-15, 21-25, 25-19, 25-22) in the nightcap. In the win over Elizabethtown, junior outside hitter Monika Linden (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) had 11 kills, eight service aces and seven digs. Senior middle hitter Summer Baumgard (Vincent, Ohio/Warren) added eight kills, three blocks and two aces. Junior middle hitter Samantha Butler (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) contributed nine kills and four blocks, while sophomore outside hitter Courtney Holdrieth (Coraopolis, Pa./West Allegheny) had seven kills and 18 digs. Sophomore setter Mia Serine (Mohnton, Pa./Holy Name) dished out 34 assists. W&J takes on Gallaudet (10:00 am) and Eastern (Noon) on Saturday in the final day of the tournament. W&J GOES FIVE SETS AGAIN; TOPS BETHANY, 3-2, IN WEST VIRGINIA (10/30) BETHANY, W.Va. - Washington & Jefferson had to hold off a late Bethany rally before posting a 3-2 victory (25-17, 26-24, 17-25, 23-25, 15-11) over the Bison on Thursday evening in Presidents' Athletic Conference volleyball action at Hummel Field House. The Presidents (15-10, 10-4 PAC) played a five-set match for the fifth time in their last six matches. W&J holds a 5-3 record in matches that last five sets this season. Bethany's record dropped to 5-24 overall and 2-12 in the PAC. Sophomore middle hitter Courtney Sherwin (Greensburg, Pa./Latrobe) paced the Presidents with seven kills and nine blocks. Classmate Courtney Holdrieth (Coraopolis, Pa./West Allegheny) added nine kills, 10 digs and three service aces. Junior outside hitter Monika Linden (Manassas, Va./Osbourne Park) posted eight kills and five aces and junior middle hitter Samantha Butler (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) finished with a team-high 10 kills. Butler also collected five blocks. The Presidents will round out their regular-season schedule this weekend at the Elizabethtown Halloween Classic. W&J plays two matches on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon.

7 PRESIDENTS HANG ON TO DEFEAT GENEVA, 3-2, IN PAC VOLLEYBALL (10/27) BEAVER FALLS, Pa. - Washington & Jefferson grabbed a two-set lead and then hung on to knock off Geneva, 3-2 (25-19, 26-24, 19-25, 19-25, 15-12), on Tuesday evening in Presidents' Athletic Conference volleyball action at Metheny Fieldhouse. The Presidents evened the season series with the Golden Tornadoes (21-10), who claimed a 3-1 decision in Washington, Pa., on Sept. 17th. The match does not count towards PAC standings due to Geneva's NCAA Division III provisional status. W&J (14-10) was led by senior outside hitter Monika Linden's (Manassas, Va./Osbourne Park) 18 kills, six digs and two service aces. Sophomore Courtney Sherwin (Greensburg, Pa./Latrobe) added 11 kills, six blocks and one ace, while sophomore setter Mia Serine (Mohnton, Pa./Holy Name) contributed 43 assists, six digs and two blocks. Junior libero Nellica Davis (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier) led the defense with 20 digs. Washington & Jefferson rounds out its conference schedule on Thursday when traveling to Bethany, W.Va., for a 7:00 pm match with the Bison. GROVE CITY RALLIES FOR 3-2 PAC VOLLEYBALL WIN (10/23) WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Grove City rallied from a two-set deficit to record a 3-2 Presidents Athletic Conference victory (20-25, 21-25, 28-26, 25-22, 16-14) over Washington & Jefferson on Thursday evening at the Henry Memorial Center. The Wolverines improved to overall and 4-6 in the PAC following the come-from-behind win. The Presidents (13-10, 9-4 PAC) were led by junior outside hitter Monika Linden (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park), who posted 15 kills, seven service aces and five digs. Sophomore outside hitter Courtney Holdrieth (Coraopolis, Pa./West Allegheny) added 13 kills and 13 digs, while junior middle hitter Samantha Butler (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) and senior outside hitter Summer Baumgard (Vincent, Ohio/Warren) notched 11 and 10 kills, respectively. 8 WESTMINSTER SWEEPS VOLLEYBALL SEASON SERIES FROM W&J (10/21) NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Westminster took another step towards hosting the Presidents' Athletic Volleyball Tournament after defeating Washington & Jefferson, 3-1 (25-16, 18-25, 25-19, 25-21), on Tuesday evening at Buzz Ridl Gymnasium. The Lady Titans (18-8, 10-1 PAC) earned the season sweep over the Presidents with tonight's victory and a 3-2 triumph on Sept. 17th in Washington. Sam Botzum led Westminster with 16 kills, while Lindsay Speidel added 15. W&J (13-9, 9-3 PAC) was led by senior right-side hitter Summer Baumgard (Vincent, Ohio/Warren) and sophomore outside hitter Courtney Holdrieth (Coraopolis, Pa./West Allegheny), who both collected 10 kills. Holdrieth also contributed 16 digs. Sophomore middle hitter Courtney Sherwin (Greensburg, Pa./Latrobe) pitched in with seven kills and five blocks, while classmate Mia Serine (Mohnton, Pa./Holy Name) handed out 36 assists to go with nine digs and one service ace. Junior libero Nellica Davis (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier) paced the defense with 19 digs. The Presidents close out their regular-season home schedule on Thursday when hosting Grove City at 7:00 pm. W&J GRABS FOURTH-STRAIGHT PAC VICTORY (10/18) WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Sophomores setter Mia Serine (Mohnton, Pa./Holy Name) and middle hitter Courtney Sherwin (Greensburg, Pa./Latrobe) {right} helped lead the Washington and Jefferson College volleyball team to a 3-2 (26-28, 25-23, 10-25, 25-22, 15-11) win over Thiel (12-13, 7-4 PAC) on Saturday afternoon in Presidents Athletic Conference play. The Presidents trailed 2-1 going into the fourth set, but proceeded to win the final two sets to extend their PAC winning streak to four games. Serine finished the match with 47 assists, while Sherwin added a career-high 24 kills and nine blocks to lead the W&J offensive attack on the afternoon.

9 Junior Nellica Davis (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier) again led the defensive unit for the Presidents, tallying 20 digs. Sophomore Maggie Blicha (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) added two service aces and five digs as well for the red and black. W&J (13-8, 9-2 PAC) travels to Westminster on Tuesday evening for a 7:00 pm contest with the PAC-leading Lady Titans. W&J FIGHTS BACK TO EDGE WAYNESBURG IN PAC VOLLEYBALL (10/16) WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson fought back from a 2-1 deficit and rallied to defeat Waynesburg, 3-2 (25-23, 21-25, 23-25, 25-23, 15-10), in Presidents Athletic Conference volleyball action on Thursday evening at the Henry Memorial Center. The Presidents (12-8, 8-2 PAC) trailed late in the fourth set, but bounced back to earn their eighth consecutive victory over the Yellow Jackets (8-15, 4-7 PAC). Sophomore setter Mia Serine (Mohnton, Pa./Holy Name) paced the Presidents with 37 assists, 16 digs, three service aces and two blocks. Classmate Courtney Sherwin (Greensburg, Pa./Latrobe) added 12 kills, five blocks, five digs and a pair of aces, while sophomore outside hitter Courtney Holdrieth (Coraopolis, Pa./West Allegheny) finished with 11 kills and 13 digs. Junior middle hitter Samantha Butler (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) posted 10 kills and seven blocks, while junior outside hitter Monika Linden (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) notched eight kills and three service aces. W&J ROLLS TO 3-0 VICTORY OVER CHATHAM IN PITTSBURGH (10/14) PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Junior outside hitter Andrea Fletcher (Indiana, Pa./Penns Manor) posted seven kills, five digs and three blocks to help Washington & Jefferson earn a 3-0 Presidents' Athletic Conference volleyball victory over Chatham on Tuesday evening. Fletcher also added one service ace for the Presidents, who recorded set wins by scores of 25-14, 25-20, Washington & Jefferson defeated the Cougars for the 22nd time in 24 chances in history.

10 Freshman setter Hayley Hilgenberg (Frewsburg, N.Y./Falconer) dished out 23 assists, including seven to junior outside hitter Stephanie Lucsko (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park). Sophomore Kayla Spridik (Bentleyville, Pa./Bentworth) and freshman Tessa Slifka (Latrobe, Pa./Derry Area) led the Presidents' defense. Spridik finished with seven digs, two service aces and one kill, while Slifka contributed eight digs. W&J (11-8, 7-2 PAC) returns to conference play on Thursday when hosting Waynesburg at 7:00 pm. The Presidents will honor the lone senior on the 2008 squad, Summer Baumgard (Vincent, Ohio/Warren) in a ceremony prior to the match. PRESIDENTS SPLIT A PAIR OF PAC MATCHES IN KENTUCKY (10/11) CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. - The Washington & Jefferson College volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-17) Presidents' Athletic Conference match at Thomas More, but salvaged a split after knocking off Bethany by a 3-1 (25-23, 19-25, 25-14, 25-16) margin on Saturday at the Connor Convocation Center. The Saints (17-5, 5-2) evened the season series with the Presidents (10-8, 6-2) after falling to W&J by the same 3-0 margin nearly a month ago. W&J and TMC are the only two teams in the PAC with two losses as both trail Westminster (15-7, 8-0) atop the league standings. In the loss to Thomas More, W&J was led by sophomore middle hitter Courtney Sherwin (Greensburg, Pa./Latrobe), who collected seven kills, five blocks, five digs and one service ace. Junior middle hitter Samantha Butler (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) added five kills and four blocks. 11 PRESIDENTS TAKE DOWN BEARCATS, 3-1, IN PAC VOLLEYBALL (10/8) WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Junior outside hitter Monika Linden (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) recorded 16 kills, five blocks and two digs to help Washington & Jefferson defeat Saint Vincent, 3-1 (25-15, 25-23, 17-25, 25-17), in Presidents Athletic Conference volleyball action on Wednesday evening at the Henry Memorial Center. The win does not count towards PAC standings due to SVC s provisional status in NCAA Division III. W&J (9-7) also improved its all-time record versus the Lady Bearcats (15-6) to Sophomore middle hitter Courtney Sherwin (Greensburg, Pa./Latrobe) added eight kills and four blocks, while junior Samantha Butler (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) contributed eight kills and three blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Courtney Holdrieth (Coraopolis, Pa./West Allegheny) finished with seven kills, seven digs and three service aces, while sophomore setter Mia Serine (Mohnton, Pa./Holy Name) handed out 42 assists. W&J SPLITS AT HIRAM QUAD (10/4) HIRAM, Ohio -- The Washington and Jefferson College volleyball squad split a pair of non-conference matches on Saturday afternoon at the Hiram Quad, falling to No. 5 Trinity (Tex.) 3-0 (18-25, 22-25, 16-25) and defeating host Hiram 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-19) in the nightcap. With the split, the Presidents bring their overall record to 9-7, including a 5-1 mark in the PAC. W&J hosts Saint Vincent at Henry Memorial Center on Wednesday evening. PRESIDENTS TOP THIEL IN GREENVILLE (10/2) GREENVILLE, Pa. - Washington & Jefferson posted two-point victories in all three sets to record a 3-0 triumph (27-25, 27-25, 25-23) over Thiel in Presidents' Athletic Conference volleyball action on Thursday evening at Rissell-Beeghly Gymnasia. The Presidents (7-6, 5-1 PAC) and Tomcats (7-9, 4-2 PAC) were locked in a second-place tie in the conference standings prior to the match. Sophomore Courtney Sherwin (Greensburg, Pa./Latrobe) led the way with eight kills and seven blocks versus Penn State-Altoona, while Butler and Linden provided five kills each. W&J takes on Muskingum (10:00am) and Capital (2:00 pm) WASHINGTON & JEFFERSON COLLEGE SEASON PREVIEW (8/8) Gaining experience and leadership will be two of the key issues for Head Coach Fred Wallace as he prepares for his sixth preseason camp with the Washington & Jefferson College volleyball program this August. Returning just one senior, middle hitter Summer Baumgard {right}, Wallace is hoping leaders emerge early in the preseason. W&J looks to bounce back from an injury-plagued 2007 campaign which saw the Presidents post a overall record and earn a trip to the ECAC Division III Tournament semifinals. Wallace anticipates a core group of returning players: Baumgard, juniors outside hitter Monika Linden and middle hitter Samantha Butler and sophomores middle hitter Courtney Sherwin and outside hitter Courtney Holdrieth to guide the team during the first half of the schedule. Linden leads the returnees in nearly every offensive category. She averaged 3.01 kills per game in 2007 and amassed 301 kills on the year which was over 100 more than any other President. Baumgard battled injuries all season and was limited to only 16 matches. However, she has proven to be a force when healthy as she averages nearly two kills per game throughout her career.

19 Holdrieth came on strong towards the end of the season and totaled 167 kills (3rd on team) and 204 digs (4th on team). Sherwin is an athletic player with a powerful arm who amassed 127 kills and 82 blocks (3rd on team). With the graduation of setter/defensive specialist Emily Yaros, Wallace must look to fill the roll with one of the many young and inexperienced players on the roster. Yaros' presence will also be missed on the service front as she led the team with 49 aces last season; however, junior defensive specialist Nellica Davis recorded 36 aces last year and will be counted on to continue that production.. Defensively, Davis (563 digs) and Butler (104 blocks) led the team in their respective categories. Butler was also second on the squad with 190 kills. Juniors Andrea Fletcher, Stephanie Lucsko and Anna Miskis-Neilson provide solid experience and will be looking to fill in for players lost to graduation. The defensive unit will ultimately be anchored down by whoever wins the job at the libero position, an opening that Wallace feels could be filled by any one of the defensive specialists. Davis, Miskis-Neilson, junior Erin Ponter and sophomores Maggie Blicha and Kayla Spridik are all vying for that spot during the preseason. Wallace will also depend on a host of freshman and sophomores to fill key contributing roles for the Presidents throughout the season. The Presidents will open the 2008 season on September 6, when they host the "2008 Holiday INNvitational" at the Henry Memorial Center. The tournament is a two-day, round robin event.
