The lead extended to 2-0 midway through the second half when Peery redirected a pass from freshman midfielder Hannah Lott (Aspers, Pa./Biglerville) for a goal. Juniata (1-6) became the first team to score against the Presidents in 2008 with 8:17 left in the contest. Junior forward Brittany Kauffman (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) netted the Eagle goal which snapped W&J freshman goalie Roslynn Reynoso s (Fallbrook, Calif./Fallbrook Union) scoreless streak at 201:43.

15 The Eagles had a few late chances, but Reynoso turned aside three shots in the final three minutes to record her third victory. Washington & Jefferson held a shot advantage. Reynoso finished with six saves, while junior goalie Denalyn Spratt (Haddon Hts., N.J./Haddon Hts.) suffered the loss for Juniata after making nine saves in 62 minutes of action. The Presidents return to action at Cameron Stadium tomorrow when hosting Shenandoah (Va.) for a noon contest. PRESIDENTS' FIELD HOCKEY IMPROVES TO 2-0 (9/6) OBERLIN, Ohio - The Washington & Jefferson College defense limited an opponent to only one shot on goal for the second-straight game as the Presidents defeated Oberlin, 2-0, in field hockey action on Saturday afternoon. Freshman Roslynn Reynoso (Fallbrook, Calif./Fallbrook Union) made one save to collect her second-straight shutout. W&J took the lead with 8:35 remaining in the first half as senior forward Laura Peery (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) scored off a pass from sophomore forward Julie Zackey (Easton, Pa./Moravian Academy). The Presidents (2-0) added an insurance run with six minutes left as sophomore forward Kolbey Seidel (Oley, Pa./Exeter) scored. Senior midfielder Carley Riggin (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) assisted on the goal. Washington & Jefferson held a 30-6 shot advantage and attempted 16 penalty corners to OC's four. Manya Lulek amassed 19 saves for the Yeowomen. The Presidents open their 2008 home schedule on Saturday at noon when hosting Juniata at Cameron Stadium. W&J OPENS 2008 CAMPAIGN WITH 1-0 VICTORY OVER WILSON (9/3) CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Sophomore forward Julie Zackey (Easton, Pa./Moravian Academy) scored the lone goal just under three minutes before halftime to help Washington & Jefferson College open the 2008 field hockey season with a 1-0 victory over Wilson College on Wednesday afternoon.

16 Zackey scored the unassisted goal at the 32:39 mark and freshman goalie Roslynn Reynoso (Fallbrook, Calif./Fallbrook Union) made the lead hold up. Reynoso was making her first collegiate start in her first-ever game with the Presidents (1-0) and finished with one save. W&J out-shot Wilson (1-1) by a 34-5 margin, including a 24-3 count in the first half. Senior midfielder Laura Peery (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) and Zackey combined for 17 of the W&J shot attempts. Nikola Grafnetterova suffered the loss for the Phoenix despite making 15 saves. Washington & Jefferson returns to action on Saturday at Oberlin (1:00 pm). Empire 8 ChampionshipW&J CHOSEN FOURTH IN PRESEASON FIELD HOCKEY POLL (8/18) WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington and Jefferson College field hockey team was selected to finish fourth in the annual Empire 8 Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. Three-time Empire 8 Champion Hartwick (31 points) is the preseason favorite after garnering two first-place votes in the close poll. Stevens Institute was picked to finish second with 30 points and three first-place votes. Nazareth notched third place, receiving 26 points and two first-place nods. Coming off their school record 15-5 campaign in 2007, the Presidents received 20 points, finishing in front of Ithaca (18), Utica (16) and Elmira (6). W&J returns four seniors from last year s squad which captured the Empire 8 regular-season title and fell one game shy of claiming the tournament championship. The Presidents will rely on leadership from the seniors to guide an otherwise inexperienced pool of underclassmen, which includes 11 freshman and sophomores. This season marks the first time that the Empire 8 champion will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship Tournament. W&J will open the 2008 season on Sept. 3rd at Wilson College. The match is slated to begin at 4:30 pm.
