Led by three-time NFHCA Coach of the Year SALLY SCATTON, William Smith has earned a spot in 14 NCAA frays (including this year) during her 17 seasons, winning national championships in 1992, 1997, and AND COUNTING Over the past 34 seasons, the William Smith field hockey team has posted 399 victories against 172 losses, and eight ties for an all-time winning percentage of.696. Five-time Liberty League Coach of the Year SALLY SCATTON has accounted for a mark (.786) in her 17 seasons. STREAKS Following a 1-1 start, the Herons rattled off nine consecutive wins before suffering a setback at then-fifth ranked Cortland. William Smith rebounded with six straight triumphs, a streak the Herons will look to build on today. POLL POSITION William Smith is ranked fifth in the final NFHCA Coaches Poll. The Herons began the season unranked, but debuted at No. 17 on Sept. 21 and steadily worked their way into the top-5. CONSISTENCY The Heron Field Hockey program has been a model of consistency over the past three decades. Since 1983 s mark, William Smith has not suffered a losing season, posting at least 11 wins in 20 straight seasons. The Herons have posted three 20-win seasons, each ending in a national championship. Coincidentally, four more wins would give William Smith 20 wins and the national championship. NORTH-SOUTH Seniors back LEA DESFORGES and midfielder SARAH SILVERIO have been selected to the North roster for the annual NFHCA Division III North-South Senior All-Star Game. LEAGUE HONORS William Smith dominated the 2004 Liberty League postseason awards, placing 10 players on the first, second, and honorable mention teams. LEA DESFORGES, SARAH SILVERIO, and SOPHIE DENNIS garnered first-team honors. Senior forward LILY GILLETT, junior forward MAGGIE DOLAN, junior midfielder AMY KUZIO, and junior goalie SUE JORDAN earned second-team praise. Junior back LAUREN FULLER, sophomore midfielder BROOKE ATWOOD, and sophomore back LIZ SAUCIER received honorable mention. ONE A DAY Sophomore forward SOPHIE DENNIS is the top goal scorer in the Liberty League. With 18 tallies entering the weekend, she is averaging a goal per game. In fact, Dennis total places her fifth on William Smith s single season list, one shy of JENNIFER JOINNIDES 97 (4th, 19 in 1995) and two behind MELISSA CROWLEY 91 (t-2nd, 20 in 1990) and JACKIE HALL 02 (t2nd, 20 in 2000). PLAYMAKERS Seventy percent of William Smith s 33 assists this season have come from three players, SOPHIE DENNIS (9), junior forward MAGGIE DOLAN (8), and junior midfielder AMY KUZIO (6), second, fourth, and seventh in the conference, respectively.

As long as we re on the topic, SOPHIE DENNIS is already 11th on the Herons career scoring list. With 82 career points (35-12), she needs just one more to move into a tie for 10th with KATHERINE OLCOTT 91 ( ). GOOSE EGGS Junior goalie SUE JORDAN has enjoyed a very successful first season as a starter. In 16 wins this season, she has eight shutouts, a sterling 0.69 GAA, and an.800 save percentage. STONEWALL William Smith s back line LEA DESFORGES, LAUREN FULLER, JANIE O DONNELL, and LIZ SAUCIER have protected goalie SUE JORDAN like a secret service detail. Heron opponents have averaged fewer than seven shots per game. SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW William Smith captured its sixth Liberty League championship this season. While the result was not surprising, the final standings were. For the first time since the league was founded in 1995, the Herons and Skidmore did not finish 1-2 in some order. This season, St. Lawrence finished second in the regular season and in the tournament standings. SCOUTING THE TIGERS: Champion of the North Coast Athletic Conference, Wittenberg enters the weekend with a 15-4 record. The Tigers have made six previous NCAA Tournament appearances, but they are still looking for their first postseason win. Blair Ufer is the team s leading scorer with 17 goals and 13 assists. Defensively, Wittenberg sports five All-NCAC selections, including first-year goalie Nicole Irvin (1.34 GAA,.818 SV%, 7 Sho).
