1 Men s Hockey Friday MSU 3 Alaska-Anchorage 0 Anchorage, Alaska --- Junior netminder Cole Huggins stopped all 15 shots as #18 Minnesota State skated to a gritty 3-0 win at Alaska Anchorage in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action Friday in Anchorage. Senior forward Bryce Gervais worked a give-and-go with Zeb Knutson and Jaden Schmeisser before beating Olivier Mantha on a breakaway at 1:37 of the first period to give Minnesota State a 1-0 lead and that's the way the score remained throughout the opening stanza. The goal is the 13th of the year for Gervais and his 64th career goal. The Mavericks scored twice in the middle frame in taking a 3-0 lead. Senior forward Dylan Margonari jammed the puck past Olivier Mantha on a goal-mouth scramble at 9:26 for his fourth tally of the year and sophomore forward C.J. Franklin went end-to-end before ripping a wrist shot past Mantha on the stickside at 17:32 for his team-best 14th goal of the year. The two teams battled through a scoreless third period as Minnesota State upped its record to in the last six games. Both teams went scoreless in three power play chances on the night (the Mavericks did have nine shots on goal during the course of its man advantage chances) and Minnesota State outshot UAA by a margin in the game Junior netminder Cole Huggins earned his second shutout of the year and evened his record at with this evening's decision. He now stands for his career and has moved into a tie for eighth at Minnesota State in career wins. His nine career shutouts ranks second all-time at the school. Minnesota State, which clinched home ice in the first round of the league postseason play-offs with tonight's victory, stands overall and is in WCHA action. Alaska Anchorage falls to overall, WCHA for With the win, the Mavericks maintain their lead atop the WCHA standings, standing two points in front of Michigan Tech and Bowling Tech with three games left in the regular season. Saturday MSU 2 Alaska-Anchorage 1 Anchorage, Alaska --- #18 Minnesota State scored the game's first two goals and held on in earning a 2-1 victory at Alaska Anchorage in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action Saturday in Anchorage. Senior forward Bryce Gervais maintained his torrid pace, getting his 14th goal of the season when his shot along the ice from 15 feet in front of the net beat Olivier Mantha at 9:02 of the opening period. The goal is the 65th career marker for Gervais and puts him in a tie for third with Tim Wolfe (Minnesota State ) on the school's all-time list for the NCAA DI-era. That goal held up as the only scoring in the game until 2:50 of the third period when Dylan Margonari forced a turnover behind the UAA net and Jimmy Mullin shoveled a pass to Teddy Blueger, who out-waited Mantha before depositing the puck into the back of the net. The goal is Blueger's ninth of the year and gives the Riga, Latvia native his 103rd career point ( ). The pesky Seawolves tallied a shorthanded goal with less thant two minutes remaining in the game, but could not get the equalizer and the game ended with the Mavericks claiming the 2-1 win. The Mavericks, who went zero-for-six in power plays in the game, outshot UAA by a margin in the game. Junior netminder Cole Huggins stands on the season with tonight's win and owns a for his career. Huggins now stands eighth at Minnesota State in career wins. Minnesota State, which has gone in its last ten games, stands overall and is in WCHA action. With the win, the Mavericks maintain their lead atop the WCHA standings, standing two points in front of Michigan Tech and Bowling Tech with two games left in the regular season. The Mavericks close out the regular season next weekend with Bemidji State visiting Mankato for a pair of WCHA games at Verizon Wireless Center Friday and Saturday.
2 Women s Hockey Friday MSU 0 Wisconsin 4 MADISON, Wis. -- The Minnesota State women's hockey team took a loss Friday night in Madison, Wis. against the No. 3 Badgers of Wisconsin in the first game of the best-of-three WCHA first-round playoff. The third-rated Badgers took the game's first lead at the 18:15 mark of the first frame. After MSU was whistled for a body-checking call, Badger forward Emily Clark swatted at a loose puck in the crease for her 21st of the season. At the end of the first 20 minutes, Minnesota State goaltender, junior, Brianna Quade collected 18 stops on 19 Badger shots while Quade's opposite, Ann-Renee Desbiens saved all eight Maverick shots she was challenged with. Neither team was able to break the puck past their opposing netminder in the second period as Quade added 23 more saves for a total of 41 through 40 minutes while Desbiens stopped one more Maverick shot in the second for a total of nine. The Badgers netted two goals in the first five minutes of the third period and carried the tasking lead the rest of the way. Fifty one seconds into the frame, Mellissa Channell took a shot from the top of the left circle on a screened Quade. The puck found the back of the, putting UW ahead 2-0. A couple of minutes later, Sarah Nurse skated the puck down the left side into the Maverick's end. Nurse wristed the puck past Quade at 4:42 for a 3-0 lead. Wisconsin added on more tally at 14:12 as Sam Cogan wristed a shot stick side for her ninth of the season. By the time the final horn sounded, Quade had tallied a career-high 52 saves in the match while the Mavericks generated 13 shots of their own. SAturday MSU 0 Wisconsin 6 MADISON, Wis. --- The Minnesota State women's hockey team was defeated Saturday afternoon by Wisconsin in Madison, Wis. The Badgers scored two goals in the first period and never looked back. Minnesota State's season came to a close at La Bahn Arena in front of the sellout crowd of 2,273. The Maverick's record finalized at ( WCHA) in action. Just over six and a half minutes in to the first frame was what it took for the third-rated Badgers to pick up from Friday evening's game. At 6:47, Sophia Shaver skated the puck across the slot and snapped one on net. Baylee Wellhausen put another shot on net before she was able to bat in her own rebound to put Wisconsin up 1-0. Sydney McKibbon capped off the first-frame scoring, putting in a rebound with 9.4 seconds on the clock. Minnesota State goaltender, junior Brianna Quade recorded 15 saves on 17 Badger shots in the first 20 minutes while Badger goaltender, Ann-Renee Desbiens stopped all three Maverick attempts on her way to her 18th shutout of the season. Wisconsin tallied their third goal of the game half way through the second period when Mellissa Channell released a slapshot from the left point. The puck hit the back of the net at 9:58 of the period, beating Quade glove-side for her third goal of the season. Quade added 11 more saves in the frame for a total of 26 through the first 40 minutes. The Badgers put the game out of reach 22 seconds into the third period when Annie Pankowski drove to the middle of the ice, and then passing to an open Emily Clark at the bottom of the left circle, to tap home for her 22nd of the season.. Wisconsin added two more goals in the frame from Pankowski at 2:46 with her 21st of the year and Jenny Ryan at 5:01 for her seventh of the season. Quade was relieved of duties in the third period, recording 29 saves in the contest. Sophomore goaltender Katie Bidulka entered the game and collected six saves. Bidulka ended the game with a 37-save performance while the Maverick power play capitalized on one of its four opportunities.
