1 Men s Hockey Friday Bemidji 2 Minnesota State used a pair of third-period goals in edging Bemidji State 3-2 in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association men's hockey contest played in Bemidji Friday. The win is the first of for the Mavericks. The host Beavers jumped out to 1-0 lead at 3:51 of the first when Charlie O'Connor fired a shot from the right circle that beat Maverick freshman netminder Jason Pawloski on the gloveside. Minnesota State knotted it up at the 18:35 mark on a shorthanded tally from senior forward Bryce Gervais. Gervais took a pass from senior defenseman Carter Foguth in the neutral zone, split the BSU defense and ripped a shot past Michael BItzer high on the stickside for his first goal of the season. The goal is the seventh shorthanded marker of his career, which stands tied for seventh on Minnesota State's all-time list. Gervais' marker also ended a MSU scoreless drought that extended back to the third period of the first game of the season and lasted a total of 213 minutes and 58 seconds. It became a 2-1 BSU lead at 18:57 of the second after Gerry Fitzgerald's shot from the top of the circle beat a screened Pawloski with the Beavers in the midst of a five-on-three power play opportunity. The Mavericks scored twice in the final frame to close out their first win of the season. Sophomore forward Brad McClure slid the puck under Bitzer's pad at 5:19 to tie the game to knot things up and goal, which came shortly following a Maverick power play, is McClure's first of Then at 9:03, senior forward Teddy Blueger capitalized on a shorthanded breakaway opportunity by going backhand-forehand before beating Bitzer on the stickside in giving the Mavericks their first lead in the game. The goal is Blueger's first goal of the season, his second career shorthanded goal and his seventh career game-winning goal. The Mavericks went zero-for- six in power play chances on the night, while BSU capitalized on one-of-six chances with the man advantage in the game. Jason Pawloski, who made his collegiate debut in the game, recorded 18 saves for Minnesota State. Saturday Bemidji 2 Minnesota State downed Bemidji State by a 3-2 margin in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association men's hockey contest played in Bemidji Saturday. The win completes a league road sweep for the Mavericks and ups their record to for the season. Bemidji State took a 1-0 lead at 15:15 on Gerry Fitzgerald's power play goal that came on a one-timer from the right circle. The Mavericks responded at 16:50 with a power play goal of their own after sophomore forward C.J. Franklin bounced the puck off a defenseman's skate past BSU netminder Michael Bitzer. Shortly thereafter, at 17:14, junior forward Zach Stepan capitalized on a partial breakaway with a backhander that beat Bitzer high on the gloveside. The Beavers took advantage of a five-on-three power play advantage late in the second frame to knot things up on a slap shot from Graeme McCormack from the top of the right circle at 17:09. Senior defenseman Jon Jutzi collected a pass from Zach Stepan and proceeded to put the puck into a wide open net for what proved to be the game-winning tally with the Mavericks on the power play at 9:37 of the final period. The goal, his first of the year, is Jutzi's third career power play goal and his first career game-winning goal. The Mavericks went two-for- five in power play chances on the night, while BSU capitalized on two-of-four chances with the man advantage in the game. Junior netminder Cole Huggins registered 27 saves for Minnesota State and now stands1-4-0 for the season with the win. Minnesota State, which owns a WCHA mark, heads back to Mankato where it resumes home action next Friday and Saturday in a pair of WCHA games with the University of Alaska.

2 Women s Hockey Friday Ohio 5 The Minnesota State women's hockey team tallied its sixth loss of the season Friday evening, in front of a crowd of 382 at Schottenstein Center. The Mavericks jumped out to an early two-goal lead to start the game off. At the 5:06 mark of the first period, sophomore Elin Johansson (Hudiksvall, Sweden) took a pass from sophomore Anna Keys (Cottage Grove, Minn.) and fired a shot that freshman Emily Antony (Plymouth, Minn.) was able to put back for her second goal of the season. Then, just under five minutes later at 10:02, freshman Corbin Boyd (Minnetonka, Minn.) was able to tap in her second goal of the year on a play that was set up by fellow freshman Steph Keryluk (Verona, Wis.) and sophomore Amanda Conway (Naperville, Ill.). With just three minutes and 47 seconds remaining in the first frame, Ohio State was able to cut the Mavericks lead to one, as Maddy Field was able to put one by Minnesota State junior Brianna Quade (Newcastle, Ont.) to close out the period. In the second period, it was all Ohio State with the Buckeyes netting the game's next two goals. At 6:56 of the second stanza, OSU was given a power-play due to a checking infraction by Minnesota State junior Sara Bustad (Stillwater, Minn.). The Buckeyes capitalized on the extra-attacker opportunity, with Cara Zubko tying the game at two goals apiece. After five and a half minutes had passed, Ohio State claimed the lead with Kendall Curtis firing a shot that was saved by Quade before Claudia Kepler pounced on the rebound that gave the Buckeyes a 3-2 advantage. MSU saw two power-play opportunities after the third Ohio State goal, but were unable to capitalize as time expired in the period. To start the third period, Minnesota State had been caught with two many skaters on the ice at the 3:02 mark. Minnesota State sophomore Hannah Davidson (Kincardine, Ont.) wasn't phased by OSU's fourth power-play opportunity as she skated her way to an unassisted-shorthanded goal at 3:57 of the period tying the game a threes. Ohio State regained the lead almost 40 seconds later, still on the power-play as Kepler generated her second goal of the game for an OSU 4-3 advantage. Capping off the game and cementing the Buckeyes victory was Kendall Curtis, who recorded her fourth goal of the season with 13:53 remaining in the game. In the end Quade had made 30 stops for MSU, but that wasn't enough as Minnesota State was outshot by a clip of OSU goaltender Stacy Danczak posted 12 saves throughout the contest. The Mavericks were also edged in power-play chances going 0-4 as the Buckeyes were 2-5. Saturday MSU 0 Ohio 4 The Minnesota State women's hockey team suffered its second shutout of the season Saturday afternoon in Columbus, Ohio. Maverick sophomore goaltender Katie Bidulka was tested early in her first career start for Minnesota State. Bidulka, a product of Oakville, Ont., recorded 10 saves in the first seven minutes and 11 seconds of action in the first period. Though the young goalie made 10 stops, the Buckeyes were able to find the back of the net three times while she was in goal. After the third Buckeye goal at the 7:11 mark, Bidulka was replaced by junior Brianna Quade (Newcastle, Ont.), who made 26 saves throughout the rest of the game. Quade did, however, let up one more Ohio State netter at the 11:26 mark of the first frame while the Buckeyes were on the power play. The remainder of the game did not see any scores from either team. Both Minnesota State and Ohio State were awarded four power-play opportunities, but the Mavericks were unable to produce on the man advantage while the Buckeyes capitalized on one of their chances. The Buckeyes outshot the Mavericks by a clip of when it was all said and done, with OSU goaltender Alex LaMere recording 17 saves. LaMere earned her second win of the season while Bidulka's record starts out at Quade tallied 26 saves in the game, adding on to her season total and NCAA leading 289 stops (.920sv%). Minnesota State (2-7-1, WCHA) will continue with WCHA action next weekend as they return home to host a third-rated Wisconsin (7-0-0, WCHA), October Both matches are scheduled for 2:07 p.m. in Mankato, Minn., at.
