LAST TIME OUT: NORTH DAKOTA Ohio State faced conference foe North Dakota in Grand Forks, Nov The Buckeyes tied UND, 2-2, Friday evening, earning their first shootout victory of the season. On Saturday, Ohio State fell to North Dakota by a 4-3 margin. Game One Ohio State 2, North Dakota 2 Claudia Kepler scored two late goals to force overtime. She fueled the Buckeye comeback, scoring the equalizer with two seconds remaining in regulation. She originally put the Buckeyes on the board at 16:25 off a feed from Sara Schmitt and Julia McKinnon. COLONIAL COMMENTS Robert Morris played its fourth consecutive overtime contest Saturday, which resulted in a 1-1 tie with Syracuse. After trailing the Orange 1-0 in the first, the Colonials posted the tying goal with 5:17 remaining in the second period on a power play. The team is led in scoring by Ashley Vesci, Katie Fergus and Katherine Murphy. Each have posted eights points so far this season. Rikki Meilleur is the leading goal scorer for RMU with six netted. Jessica Dobbs has started in 10 games in goal this season for Robert Morris, contributing a goals against average of 3.16 and a save percentage of.898. 2 BUCKEYES VS. COLONIALS Ohio State and Robert Morris have met five times in program history. Last season, the teams suited up in Columbus with the Buckeyes falling to the 10th-ranked Colonials, 2-1. Ohio State is all-time against RMU. All four Buckeye victories came by three or more goals. OSU head coach Nate Handrahan served as head coach of RMU for five seasons starting with the season. BETWEEN THE PIPES Redshirt junior Stacy Danczak started both games in goal vs. North Dakota. She has suited up in four games for the Scarlet and Gray this season, recording a goals against average of 2.12 and a save percentage of.887. goalie Kassidy Sauve has started in 12 games for the Scarlet and Gray, recording a save percentage of.912 and a goals against average of Against Minnesota, Sauve was credited with 70 saves in the series. She ranks second nationally among freshmen goalies in saves with 279, and stands fourth among her peers in save percentage (.912) and goals against average (2.32). SCORING STATS Ohio State is led in scoring by team captain Sara Schmitt. Schmitt has recorded three goals and nine assists for 12 points on the season. She ranks seventh on Ohio State s all-time list for scoring by a defenseman with 73 career points. With five more points, Schmitt will pass Shannon Reilly for sixth all-time Kepler and McKinnon have produced a team-high five goals this season. McKinnon s total includes a hat trick vs. Bemidji State (Oct. 17). Taylor Kuehl has been a force for the Buckeyes of late, scoring four goals in the last four games. Overall, 19 players have recorded one or more points for the Buckeyes, including three rookies. THE ROOKIES Seven freshmen joined the Buckeye roster this season Dani Sadek (Lakeville, Minn.), Alison Gasuik (Buffalo, N.Y.), Jessica Dunne (O Fallon, Mo.), Julianna IaFallo (Eden, N.Y.), Lauren Spring (Kelowna, B.C.), Alex La- Mere (Albertville, Minn.) and Kassidy Sauve (Whitby, Ontario). Offensively, Spring has posted one goal and two assists for three points, while Dunne and Iafallo have each contributed an assist. SELFE SIGNS WITH THE BUCKEYES Erin Selfe, a fifth-grader at Liking Valley Intermediate, was adopted by the Buckeyes through Team IMPACT, a national nonprofit organization that matches children with life-threatening illnesses with college sports teams. Selfe signed her honorary letter of intent at a press conference following Ohio State s home matchup vs. Minnesota, making her an official Ohio State Buckeye. It s honestly the biggest honor to have Erin as a member of our team, senior forward Kayla Sullivan said. We re so thankful to be able to carry this relationship out for the rest of the year. OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN Sara Schmitt, a senior this season, will don the captain s C for the Scarlet and Gray during the season, while her teammates Kari Schmitt, Kara Gust and Melani Moylan will be recognized as the team s assistant captains. I believe they are very capable and responsible to lead our team to where we want to be, Ohio State head coach Nate Handrahan said. Sara is an excellent person who has been an unrecognized leader in her time as a Buckeye. She has shown to be well rounded in all areas of her life and will be able to interact with all team members in a positive, constructive way. I trust her and her abilities to lead us effectively. BEHIND THE BENCH Handrahan is in his fourth season at the helm of the Ohio State women s hockey program. In his first three seasons as a Buckeye, Handrahan has compiled an overall record of A graduate of Niagara University, he is joined by assistant coaches Carson Duggan, Keith Maurice and Dave Caruso. THE BUCKEYES ARE BACK Ohio State returns 17 letterwinners from a season ago, including nine forwards, seven defensemen and one goaltender. On offense, the Buckeyes will be led by nine of the Top 10 point earners from the campaign. With a line of , Sara Schmitt ranks as Ohio State s top returning point producer, while Kepler led the Buckeyes with 13 goals last season. In three seasons as head coach Handrahan has compiled an overall record of In , Handrahan s team finished fifth in the WCHA with an overall record of , in league play. During the season Handrahan led the Buckeyes to a 19-win season, second most in program history and most since the season. Ohio State finished the year overall and advanced to the WCHA Final Face-Off for the first time since 2010, sweeping Minnesota Duluth on the road in its WCHA First Round Playoffs series. In Handrahan s first season in charge of the program he guided the Buckeyes to a overall record, in the WCHA. Handrahan is the second women s hockey coach in the 12-year history of the women s hockey program. Handrahan joins Ohio State after serving five years as head coach of the Robert Morris women s hockey program. Taking over the team following its inaugural season in , Handrahan s coaching style has established a young program that has shown great strides of growth each year. Under his direction, the Colonials contended with some of the top teams in the nation as the squad has picked up key victories over nationally-ranked opponents. During the season, Robert Morris knocked off the eventual national champion Minnesota-Duluth, 4-1, on the road. The Colonials followed with a 3-1 upset over defending national champion Wisconsin. Several student-athletes have reached exceptional levels during their careers under Handrahan s guidance. Among those was goaltender Brianne McLaughlin who became the NCAA Division I all-time career saves leader in She also earned a spot on the U.S. National Team and competed for the U.S. Olympic team at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, winning a silver medal. During his time at Robert Morris, Handrahan has produced two All-CHA First Team, three Second Team and three All-Rookie Team selections. The Colonials have also had success in the classroom as Handrahan s teams have earned 46 CHA All- Academic team honors. Before taking the helm of the women s program, Handrahan served as an assistant coach to the RMU men s hockey team for two seasons under head coach Derek Schooley. He assisted in the day-to-day operations of the team as well as instructing on and off the ice. A 2000 graduate of Niagara University, Handrahan assisted his alma mater in 2001 under Dave Burkholder and served as assistant coach for three seasons. His duties included recruiting, producing game strategy and practice plans, skill development, scouting, equipment management and strength and conditioning. While at Niagara, the team earned an automatic berth to the 2004 NCAA Tournament after capturing the CHA tournament title. While with the Purple Eagles, Handrahan recruited and coached four players who would see action in the NHL. A standout defenseman for the Niagara, Handrahan was a two-time All-ECAC West selection for the Purple Eagles. He played in every game during his four-year career and led the team to a No. 6 seed in the 2000 NCAA Tournament. He finished his collegiate career with 13 goal and 68 assists for 81 points, ranking 10th on Niagara s all-time assist list. 4
