THE CLASS OF 2022 ASSEMBLES Ohio State announced four members of it's 2018 signing class during the early signing period: - Madison Bizal (Elk River, Minn.) - Sophie Jaques (Toronto, Ontario) - Gabby Rosenthal (Blaine, Minn.) - Paetyn Levis (Rogers, Minn.) MAKING HISTORY IN THE POLLS The No. 4 ranking the Buckeyes held for two weeks in the USCHO and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls is the highest ranking in school history, eclipsing the previous high of No. 6 reached in MUZZLING THE BULLDOGS The Buckeyes returned to Columbus after the Minnesota series to host the No. 5 Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs. While the risk of coming out flat after a big weekend was real, the Buckeyes bucked that trend. Kassidy Sauvé made a then season-high 35 saves while Maddy Field and Julianna Iafallo scored goals to give OSU its third shutout of the season in a 2-0 win. The second game of the series saw the scoring increase, but a similar result at the end of the game. Emma Maltais opened the scoring with a goal just over four minutes into the game. UMD responded quickly, tying the game just over a minute later, and taking the lead just past the eight minute mark of the period. From there the Buckeyes regained control of the game, scoring three straight goals and Sauvé holding the Bulldogs scoreless for over 51 minutes, only giving up a goal when UMD brought on an extra attacker with less than a minute to play, to secure a 4-3 win. RISING UP TO EARLY CHALLENGES After a successful opening weekend, the Buckeyes faced a much stiffer challenge in their second weekend with a trip to No. 4 Minnesota. Ohio State jumped out to an early lead in the first game of the series thanks to Jacyn Reeves scoring two goals in the opening four minutes. OSU took a 2-0 lead into the second, which is where Minnesota struck back with a two-goal period of their own to tie the game, 2-2, heading into the third. Junior transfer Charly Dahlquist netted her first goal as a Buckeye in the third to secure the 3-2 win for Ohio State, giving the Buckeyes their first win over Minnesota in nearly 10 years, and their first win at Minnesota in over a decade. Game two saw the teams combine for five goals in the first period, tying the total from the entire first game. In what turned out to be a shootout, Emma Maltais, Julianna Iafallo, and Dani Sadek all scored a goal each, while Tatum Skaggs score twice to give OSU a 5-5 tie with the Gophers. In the shootout Skaggs and Iafallo scored, while Sauvé blocked both shots she faced to earn the extra point in the WCHA standings AWARDS NCAA No. 1 Star of the Week... Overall Pts GP W-L-T SW GF-GA Record GF-GA 1 Wisconsin Ohio State Minnesota Minnesota Duluth Bemidji State St. Cloud State Minnesota State I m so grateful and humbled for the opportunity to coach the women s ice hockey team at The Ohio State University, Muzerall said. The opportunity to work with [athletics director] Gene Smith, Diana Sabau, and the rest of this support staff is such an honor for me. I m proud to be the newest member of the Buckeye family; the respect this university receives from around the country and around the world is unparalleled. Earlier this year, Muzerall was named an assistant coach for Canada s National Women s Development Team, specifically with the U-18 team, one of four coaches on the staff. AROUND THE WCHA Saturday, March 3 Bemidji State vs Wisconsin... 3:07 p.m. ET Minnesota vs Ohio State... 6:07 p.m. ET Sunday, March 4 Winner of Game 1 vs Winner of Game :07 p.m. ET Ohio State is ushering in a new era for its women s ice hockey program. Nadine Muzerall has been named the fourth head coach in program history. Our journey to excellence in women s ice hockey begins, Diana Sabau, Ohio State senior associate athletics director, said. Nadine Muzerall has earned a reputation as one of the top coaches in the sport. She is uniquely qualified as the leader of our program. She has won four NCAA National Championships as a coach. She has more than 15 years of experience both nationally and internationally, played professionally in Europe and had a record-setting career as a student-athlete. Nadine is a teacher and an exact fit with the core values that we hold dearly at The Ohio State University. A two-time All-American at Minnesota, Muzerall spent five years behind the bench as an assistant coach with the Golden Gophers. The first women s hockey player to be inducted into her university s hall of fame, she helped guide her former team to four national championships and five-consecutive spots in the title game. A prolific player in her own right, she still sits atop the all-time goals scored list with 139 and graduated as the career points leader Prior to her return to Minneapolis, Muzerall made a couple significant career stops. She spent two seasons playing for Hockey Club Lugano in Switzerland, skating on the first line and leading her team in both points and goals. During her tenure, the team won a Swiss National Championship and advanced to the European Cup, where they won a bronze medal. She also was a teacher and hockey coach at Northfield Mount Hermon School in Mt. Hermon, Massachusetts, from 2002 to In addition to serving as the head women s hockey coach, Muzerall was a physical education teacher. She also has contributed as an instructor to several wellknown hockey camps, helping young hockey players across the country. I d like to thank the University of Minnesota for everything it has given me over my career, Muzerall said. To be able to coach at my alma mater means more than words can say, and to be a part of the group of players that helped build the program into what it is now is something I will always cherish. That being said I m ready to hit the ground running. We have the potential and the talent to make great things happen for this program. I m really looking forward to getting to know these young women, as well as the opportunity to serve as a mentor for them and not just make them better hockey players, but more importantly to prepare them as they enter the real world. 5
