Both Friday and Saturday's games are set for 4:07 p.m. ET starts at the Sanford Center in Bemidji, Minnesota. LAST TIME OUT The Buckeyes made a triumphant return to their home ice with a sweep of WCHA foe St. Cloud State last weekend, winning both games by a score of 3-2. Late in the first period of Friday s series opener the Huskies jumped out to a 2-0 lead after scoring a pair of goals in a 14-second span. From there the Buckeyes took over, tying things up in the second with goals from Emma Maltais and Madison Field. Just past the midway point of the third Field lit the lamp for her second goal of the game and put OSU up for good, clinching a 3-2 win. Ohio State never trailed in Saturday s game as Tatum Skaggs notched her seventh goal of the season to put the Buckeyes up 1-0. A St. Cloud State goal early in the second tied things up, but goals from Field and Charly Dahlquist gave OSU the protection it needed as the Buckeyes skated away with a 3-2 win. SERIES HISTORY Ohio State comes into the weekend with a all-time record against Bemidji State. The Beavers proved to be a troublesome opponent last season as the Buckeyes went in four games against them. When the teams met in Columbus to wrap up the regular season in February Ohio State took the first matchup, 4-0. That win was the 21st victory of the season for the Buckeyes, making the Ohio State team the winningest team in program history. OSU dropped the regular season finale the following day, 2-1. THE BEAVER FILE Bemidji State comes into the weekend winless, but that s deceptive of how dangerous the team is. Four different players are tied for the team lead with four points each, including Clair DeGeorge and her three goals, one assist stat line. Emily Bergland and Paige Beebe each have four points from two goals and two assists, while Briana Jorde has four points, all coming from assists. The team broke into the polls last season after opening the season on a 4-0 winning streak, and haven t given up their hold on one of the spots since then. BUCKEYES EARN SPLIT AT ST. LAWRENCE The Buckeyes ventured to upstate New York for a non-conference clash with the No. 10 St. Lawrence University Saints in Canton, N.Y. on Oct Friday s series opener saw the Buckeyes plagued with penalties. St. Lawrence converted 2-of-6 power play opportunities in the first 10 minutes of the game to take a 2-0 lead into the second period. Jincy Dunne cut the lead to one with her first goal of the year in the second period, while Tatum Skaggs evened things up at 2-2 just 30 seconds into the third. St. Lawrence would have the last laugh in the series opener however as the Saints scored with less than 10 minutes to play to secure a 3-2 defeat for the Bucks. Something clicked for Ohio State on Saturday as the Buckeyes uncorked and offensive onslaught, winning the finale 6-1. Jacyn Reeves scored her first goal of the season, and Sara Saekkinen scored her first collegiate goal to go along with two goals from Charly Dahlquist and goals from Emma Maltais and Tatum Skaggs in the win. Goaltender Andrea Braendli came up huge in the rubber match, stopping 42-of-43 shots she faced to secure the nearly clean sheet. 3 THE SPLIT IN MINNEAPOLIS The Buckeyes faced their stiffest competition of the season so far when they faced off with the No. 3 Minnesota Golden Gophers on Oct in Minneapolis. On Friday Ohio State hung with the Gophers in the opening period, but the Minnesota attack proved to be too much that night as OSU fell 3-0 in the series opener. Goaltender Andrea Braendli stopped 44 of the 46 shots she faced, allowing two goals. The third Minnesota goal came late in the game when the Buckeyes had an empty net. Saturday s game saw the Buckeyes flip the script, opening the scoring with a goal from Sophie Jaques just 5:15 into the game. Minnesota tied the game later in the first, but a second period goal from Emma Maltais and a third period goal from Madison Field helped propel the Buckeyes to a 3-2 win. Braendli was stellar once again, tallying 40 saves in the win. The win marks only the second time in team history where the Buckeyes have won games at Ridder Arena against the Golden Gophers in consecutive years. TAMING THE MAVERICKS The Buckeyes opened Western Collegiate Hockey Association play with a sweep of Minnesota State on Oct , winning Friday s contest 4-0 and taking the series finale 2-1 in overtime. Ohio State controlled Friday s game from the outset, dominating shots-on-goal in the first period 19-to-8, knowing it was only a matter of time before one found the back of the net. The levee finally broke in the second when Charly Dahlquist lit the lamp to give OSU a 1-0 lead. Emma Maltais added a goal later in the second to send the Buckeyes into the final frame with a 2-0 lead. In the third, Lisa Bruno notched the first goal of her career, and Sam Bouley added a goal of her own while goaltender Andrea Braendli stopped all 22 shots she faced to secure the 4-0 shutout. Liz Schepers wasted no time on Saturday, finding the back of the net just 1:21 into the game to give Ohio State the early 1-0 lead. Minnesota State evened things up in the second with a goal from Tristen Truax, the only goal Braendli surrendered in the series. The Buckeyes tried to end things in regulation, putting 20 SOG in the third, but 60 minutes was not enough to settle the score and the teams went to overtime. With 53 seconds left to play in the OT period Madison Field attacked the net, firing a shot into the back of the net to give the Buckeyes a 2-1 win and a WCHA sweep. BUCKEYES SPLIT WITH COLGATE AT HOME The Buckeyes took to the ice in Columbus to host No. 8 Colgate for their home opening series on October 5-6. Friday s series opener saw both teams throwing haymakers as if it were a heavyweight fight. The Raiders landed the first blow to take a 1-0 lead before Tatum Skaggs netted an equalizer. Another Colgate goal put the Buckeyes down, but back-to-back goals from Rebecca Freiburger and Charly Dahlquist gave OSU the lead. The Raiders tied it again briefly before Lauren Boyle scored her first goal of the season to secure the 4-3 win. Dahlquist also notched two assists in the game. Emma Maltais tied her with two assists of her own, while Jincy Dunne, Sophie Jaques and Sara Saekkinen finished with one assist each. Ohio State jumped out to an early lead in Saturday s game thanks to goals from Skaggs and Liz Schepers. OSU put 19 shots-on-goal in the opening period, taking a 2-0 lead into the locker room. From there, however, the Colgate offense caught fire. The Raiders scored three goals in the second period to take the lead, and then added an insurance goal late in the third. With an empty net for the Buckeyes, Colgate tacked on another goal to hand Ohio State its first loss of the season, 5-2. Dunne, Maltais, Jaques and Madison Field accounted for the OSU assists. OPENING THE SEASON IN STYLE The Buckeyes opened the new season with a road sweep of Quinnipiac on Sept Emma Maltais scored the first goal of the season for OSU in the opening contest. Liz Schepers and Madison Field added goals to give the Bucks a 3-2 win on Friday. Saturday s game saw Tatum Skaggs score twice, and a goal from Liv Soares helped secure the sweep with another 3-2 win. Amanda Zeglen stopped 38 of the 42 shots she faced over the weekend. Maltais finished with four points on the weekend (1g-3a). Freshmen Paetyn Levis, Gabby Rosenthal, Sophie Jaques and Eve Savander all earned the first points of their career with each player getting an assist in the series. Jincy Dunne, Lisa Bruno and Charly Dahlquist also tallied assists. ANDREW CASSELS JOINS STAFF Retired NHL player and former ECHL coach Andrew Cassels joined the Buckeye hockey staff as an interim associate head coach on September 24. Cassels enjoyed a 16-year NHL career with stops in Montreal, Hartford, Calgary, Vancouver, Washington and Columbus. After not tallying any points in the series opener, a pair of Buckeyes got on the scoresheet in the second game. Maltais notched the first Buckeye point of the series with an assist on the first goal of the game. Not to be outdone, Dunne picked up her first assist of the series after her shot was redirected into the back of the net, tying the game at 1-1. The 2018 captain for the Buckeyes wasn t finished as she scored the game winning goal as the U.S. team took the second game 3-1. In the series finale, the U.S. team took an early 1-0 lead before Maltais scored to tie the game, 1-1, before eventually falling to the U.S. team 2-1. Both Maltais and Dunne finished with one goal and one assist each for the series. Despite not tallying any points, Boyle had her share of ice time in the series, including sharing a line with Dunne. O' CAPTAIN MY CAPTAIN! The backbone of every great team is the group of leaders that set an example for the rest of the team, and the Buckeyes have put together a solid group for the new season. Jincy Dunne and Erin Langermeier have taken over the captain roles, while Madison Field and Olivia Soares will serve as assistant captains. BUCKEYES RAKE IN 2018 HONORS With the history being made on the ice last season, the Buckeyes were sure to bring home some hardware when awards were given out, the only question was how hefty would the haul be? She finished the year with the second highest point total in the WCHA, and tied for the second highest assist total in the league. Head coach Nadine Muzerall brought home the WCHA Coach of the Year award, the first in program history for the Buckeyes. In the two years she s been at the helm in Columbus the Buckeyes have flipped the script on what s expected for women s ice hockey at OSU On top of her Rookie of the Year award, Maltais earned All-WCHA First and Rookie team honors, the first Buckeye to earn that double honor in the same year. During her tenure she coached five Olympians (Mira Jalosuo, Megan Bozek, Amanda Kessel, Anne Schleper, and Lee Stecklein), none of whom had made Olympic rosters prior to Muzerall s arrival. While serving as a member of the Golden Gophers staff, Muzerall s teams accrued a record of , including a perfect record during the season. 13 Minnesota team records are held by squads the she either coached or played for. Prior to her return to Minneapolis, Muzerall made a couple significant career stops. She spent two seasons playing for Hockey Club Lugano in Switzerland, skating on the first line and leading her team in both points and goals. During her tenure, the team won a Swiss National Championship and advanced to the European Cup, where they won a bronze medal. 6
