1 Men s Hockey Mavericks Rated First in WCHA Polls Minnesota State is rated ﬁrst in Western Collegiate Hockey Association Preseason Polls conducted by both the Bemidji Pioneer and Mankato Free Press. The Mavericks, who earned eight ﬁrst-place votes and 89 votes in the Free Press poll (coaches), were followed by Bowling Green (one ﬁrst-place vote, 79 points), Michigan Tech (one ﬁrst-place vote, 78 points), Bemidji State (61), Alaska (55), Ferris State (51), Northern Michigan (49), Alabama Huntsville (29), Alaska Anchorage (27) and Lake Superior State (22). Minnesota State earned 12 ﬁrst-place votes (out of 29) and 265 votes in all in the Pioneer poll (media). Minnesota State senior forward Bryce Gervais and junior defenseman Casey Nelson were selected Preseason All-WCHA in the Free Press and Pioneer polls. Gervais was named WCHA Preseason Player of the Year in the Pioneer poll. Minnesota State went in and was in WCHA games in claiming the league regular-season (MacNaughton Cup) and postseason (Broadmoor Trophy) championships. The Mavericks advanced to the NCAA Central Regional where they lost in a ﬁrst-round game to RIT. Minnesota State is scheduled to open the campaign Oct. 4 with a home exhibition game vs. the University of Alberta. Men s Hockey Preseason Partial Prospectus The Minnesota State men's hockey program got its start in 1969 and in the past 45 years have forged a (.566) record in 1,565 games. The Mavericks are entering their 17th season as members of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. Not including 45 games of league post-season action in which MSU owns an mark, the Mavericks sport a (.491) mark against league opposition since entering the league in MSU is beginning its 20th year as a member of NCAA Division I (ﬁrst DI season was ). The Mavericks are (.509) all-time as members of DI. MSU went (.861) in 18 games played at Verizon Wireless Center in and in the last two years there, are MSU's record in 21 seasons in the facility stands at (.606). The Mavericks averaged 3,980 fans per home game in (82.3% capacity), which ranked 21st in the nation in average attendance per game. Under head coach Mike Hastings Minnesota State boasted a overall mark and a WCHA record in The 29 wins represent an all-time NCAA DI-high for Minnesota State and the 21 wins in league play represent the most ever by a MSU team in WCHA games in a season. The Crookston, Minn., native, who was selected as the recipient of the Spencer Penrose Award as the national coach of the year, led MSU to its ﬁrst-ever MacNaughton Cup as WCHA regular-season champions, a second-straight Broadmoor Trophy championship as league play-oﬀ champions and a third consecutive invitation to the NCAA postseason tournament. Under his guidance the last three seasons, the Mavericks have forged a mark, with the 79 wins representing more wins than any other program in the country during that time. The Mavericks have won 20 games in a season during their NCAA Division I-era ﬁve times, but never in back-to-back-to seasons until the past three years. With the tie, Minnesota State's record opens as under new head coach John Harrington. In the ﬁrst period of play, the Mavericks came out ﬂying producing 13 shots while holding the Dutchwomen to four. At the 12:12 mark of the period, Kathryn Tomaselli gave Union a 1-0 lead on the power-play, coming oﬀ of a rebound shot from Alli Devins and the second assist coming from Jessica Kaminsky. Just over four minutes later at 16:39 of the period, junior defenseman Anna Fiegert (Landshut, Germany) scored her ﬁrst career goal as a Maverick. The goal came oﬀ of a face-oﬀ win by sophomore Hannah Davidson (Kincardine, Ont.) to senior Katie Johnson (Anoka, Minn.) who passed the puck over to Fiegert at the right point. At the end of two periods, the score was tied 1-1 with Minnesota State outshooting Union combined through the two periods. The third frame saw just as much action as the second as each team scored a goal a piece. Tomaselli was able to hit the twine for the second time of the night. The goal came at 4:18 of the frame in front of a screened Quade and was assisted by Devins and Elizabeth Otten. Later on, right before the period was about to expire, junior defenseman Sara Bustad (Stillwater, Minn.) found freshman forward Corbin Boyd (Minnetonka, Minn) in front of the goal mouth who put rubber past Dutchwomen goalie Melissa Black to tie the game at 2-2 with 1:48 left in the period. Both teams compiled seven shots each to close out regulation. The overtime period saw four shots from Minnesota State as Union was held to just one. In the end, Minnesota State out shot Union by a mark of 46-19, while Quade saved 17 Dutchwomen shots. Quade moved her career record to as a Maverick. MSU ﬁnished the game 1-7 on the power-play producing seven shots on the man advantage while Union was 2-4 and produced ﬁve shots on the power-play. Saturday MSU 3 Union 0 The Minnesota State women's hockey team scored two goals in the ﬁrst period of action and didn't look back in gaining a 3-0 home nonconference win over Union Saturday at All Seasons Arena in Mankato. With the win, Minnesota State's record increases to on the season while Union moves to In the ﬁrst period of action, Minnesota State jumped out early, scoring just ﬁve and half minutes in. Senior Katie Johnson (Anoka, Minn.) ﬁred a shot from the slot past Union goaltender Leah Patrick giving the Mavericks a one-goal lead. Sophomore Hannah Davidson (Kincardine, Ont.) recorded her second assist of the season on the play while freshman Emily Antony (Plymouth, Minn.) jumped in the mix producing her ﬁrst collegiate point with the second assist. Ten minutes later, at the 15:50 mark of the period, junior Anna Keys (Cottage Grove, Minn.) ripped a shot from the top of the point recording her ﬁrst goal on the season and the fourth of her career. The play started with Johnson dishing the puck to Davidson before passing it up to Keys, giving MSU a 2-0 lead to close out the period. The second 20 minutes played out more evenly than the ﬁrst. The Dutchwomen outshot the Mavericks 9-7 in the frame while MSU held a advantage through two periods. At 6:59, MSU intercepted a Union breakout pass that ended up on the stick of freshman Corbin Boyd (Minnetonka, Minn.). The play featured a pretty give-and-go with sophomore Amanda Conway (Naperville, Ill.) ﬁnishing for her ﬁrst goal of the season. The third period held solid as neither team was able to put the puck in the back of the net. Minnesota State held a advantage in shots in the contest and ﬁnished 0-4 on the power-play. Union ﬁnished 0-3 on the power-play. With the win Quade improves her record to on the season and acquired her ﬁrst career shutout. The three stars proved to be all Mavericks including Johnson (1st star-1g and 1A), Davidson (2nd star- 2A) and Quade (3rd star- 19 saves and shutout). The win also marks the ﬁrst at Minnesota State for new women's hockey head coach John Harrington.
