Mousseau, a longtime league official, tragically passed away March 25 after suffering critical head injuries stemming from a fall to the ice during warm-ups prior to the second WCHA Final Five semifinal game on Friday, March 18 at the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich. Mousseau was 48. Butch was universally respected for his work on the ice and beloved for his kind and generous spirit to all, along with his love for the great sport of hockey at all levels. Opening Face-Off At the Polls: League-leading Bemidji State and two-time defending MacNaughton Cup champion Minnesota State continue to carry the men's Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) banner in the national opinion polls. The Beavers are No. 15 in both the USCHO.com and the USA Today / USA Hockey Magazine polls, while the Mavericks are No. 19 in the former and are receiving votes in the latter. Michigan Tech is receiving votes in both polls. Hot Huskies: An start a distant memory, Michigan Tech is in its last 18 contests. The Huskies'.750 winning percentage since Oct. 14 is tied for fifth nationally, while no NCAA team has won more games since Nov. 1 (Tech is in that span). Behind NCAA goals-against average leader Angus Redmond (the freshman goaltender sports a 1.40 mark), Tech now boasts the NCAA's sixth-ranked scoring defense at 2.14 goals allowed per game. Redmond also ranks fourth nationally with a.937 save percentage and tied for fifth with an.821 winning percentage (11-2-1). Bemidji State Sets Pace: No. 15 Bemidji State, which holds a seven-point lead in the race for the MacNaughton Cup, is tied for second nationally with 13 wins. BSU's.659 winning percentage (13-6-3) ranks ninth in the country. The Beavers lead the nation by allowing just 1.59 goals per game. Junior goaltender Michael Bitzer ranks among the top-15 nationally for: wins (t1st - 13), games (1st - 21), starts (1st - 21), minutes (1st :24), goals-against average (2nd ), shutouts (t2nd - 3), save percentage (3rd -.940), saves (4th - 483) and winning percentage (11th -.690, ). Charging Ahead: Alabama Huntsville will open the second half of league play Jan. 6 tied for fourth place in the WCHA standings. Through 16 games, the Chargers have already posted their most WCHA victories ever at UAH has posted three road sweeps (at FSU, at UAA and at NMU) and has a four-game road winning streak - both firsts for the program since the campaign. The Chargers are on the road in WCHA play. Tradition Starts Here: Four (4) of the nation's top-15 winningest teams over the past three seasons play in the WCHA - the highest representation among that upper 25% of programs of any D-I conference since realignment (Hockey East and the NCHC each have three teams apiece, the Big Ten and ECAC Hockey both have two each and Atlantic Hockey has a single program). Minnesota State ranks fourth nationally over the last three-and-a-half seasons with 87 wins, Michigan Tech is tied for 10th with 78, Ferris State is 13th with 74 and Bowling Green is tied for 14th with 72. The Week Ahead Welcome Back: Following a 10-day hiatus for the holiday break, the WCHA returns with eight teams playing 15 games from Wednesday-Sunday of this week. Holiday Tournaments: Four WCHA teams are participating in prestigious holiday tournaments this week. Michigan Tech hosts the 52nd annual Great Lakes Invitational on Thursday and Friday, the final one held at the fabled Joe Louis Arena. The Huskies skate against Michigan in one semifinal, while No. 16 Western Michigan and Michigan State square off in the other contest. Ferris State opens the Three Rivers Classic in Pittsburgh against Robert Morris on Thursday, and will play one of two ranked opponents in the second contest - either No. 6/5 Boston College or No. 14/13 Quinnipiac. Northern Michigan skates against Cornell on Wednesday in the opener of the Florida College Hockey Classic, which also features Colorado College and Merrimack. Alabama Huntsville comes to Minneapolis for the Mariucci Classic, hosted by No. 11 Minnesota. The Chargers open against Massachusetts on Friday, and will face either Mercyhurst or the Gophers on Saturday. Nonconference Games: Two WCHA teams hit the road for nonconference series, as Lake Superior State will visit No. 20 Omaha, while Alaska travels to No. 12 Notre Dame. A third league school, Bowling Green, will host a single contest against RIT on Friday night at the Huntington Center in Toledo, Ohio. No. 15 Bemidji State at Alaska Anchorage: The lone WCHA series of the weekend sees the Seawolves hosting the league-leading Beavers for a pair of afternoon contests in Anchorage. 2 WCHA Players of the Week - Games of Dec , 2016 #WCHA Offensive Player of the Week Mitch McClain Jr., F, Bowling Green Baxter, Minn. McLain was once again in the middle of a Bowling Green victory, capping a two-point weekend with what stood as the game-winning goal in the Falcons 6-3 triumph Dec. 17 at Alaska. The junior from Baxter, Minn. factored into the winning goal for the fourth time this season, scoring just 1:07 into the third period to give BGSU a 4-2 lead and igniting a three-goal outburst over the final stanza. He also picked up an assist Friday night (Dec. 16), while he finished the series with a WCHA-best 26 face-off wins. Bowling Green is now this season when McLain scores a goal and when he tallies a point, while the forward enters the holiday break second in the WCHA with a career-high 22 points overall (11g-11a). This is McLain s third WCHA weekly award of the season (all in the last four weeks) and his fifth career honor (including one Rookie of the Week accolade). Honorable Mention: Marcus Basara, Sr., F, Alaska - Lone WCHA skater with two goals on the weekend, as he gave the Nanooks a 1-0 lead en route to a 3-2 win over Bowling Green on Friday night (Dec. 16) before tying Saturday s contest at 1-1. Defensive Player of the Week Michael Bitzer Jr., G, Bemidji State Moorhead, Minn. Bitzer turned in a 60-save weekend against the nation s top-ranked team, helping No. 15 Bemidji State earn a tie before dropping a one-goal decision to No. 1 Minnesota Duluth. The junior from Moorhead, Minn. had a season-high 35 stops over 65 minutes Friday (Dec. 16) in Duluth, allowing the Beavers to earn a 1-1 tie on the road despite being outshot by a margin. Bitzer then turned aside 25 shots Saturday (Dec. 17) in a 2-1 setback, finishing the series with a.952 save percentage and 1.45 goals-against average. Entering the holiday break, Bitzer ranks in the top-15 nationally for: wins (tied 1st 13), games (1st 21), starts (1st 21), minutes (1st 1270:24), goals-against average (2nd 1.46), shutouts (tied 2nd 3), save percentage (3rd -.940), saves (4th 483) and winning percentage (11th -.690). This is Bitzer s fourth WCHA weekly award of the season and his 11th career honor, including a pair of Rookie of the Week accolades. Rookie of the Week Marc Michaelis Fr., F, Minnesota State Mannheim, Germany Michaelis led all WCHA skaters and tied for second nationally with four points during the Dec weekend, tallying a goal and three assists as No. 19 Minnesota State spit a nonconference road series at Princeton. After picking up an assist in Friday s loss, Michaelis had a three-point effort as the Mavericks halted the Tigers five-game winning streak with a 5-4 triumph Saturday (Dec. 17). The freshman from Mannheim, Germany scored his 10th goal of the season to give Minnesota State a 2-0, first-period lead, then assisted on a pair of second-period tallies (including one power-play goal) as the Mavericks extended their advantage to 4-2. Michaelis enters the holiday break leading the WCHA overall scoring race with 26 points (10g-16a), good for ninth in the NCAA (second amongst freshmen). This is Michaelis second WCHA weekly award of his rookie campaign. 3 WCHA Preseason Polls #WCHA Bowling Green Tabbed as Preseason Favorite by WCHA Coaches and Media If the league s coaches and media are correct, Bowling Green will end the regular season by hoisting its first MacNaughton Cup as champion of the men s Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA). The Falcons were tabbed as the league favorite in both the Mankato Free Press WCHA Coaches and the Bemidji Pioneer WCHA Media preseason polls. The four schools that made the WCHA one of just two Division I conferences (along with Hockey East) to have at least four, 20-win teams in sit atop both polls in identical order: Bowling Green, followed by reigning MacNaughton Cup co-champions Michigan Tech and Minnesota State, and defending Broadmoor Trophy winner Ferris State. The four programs picked to hold home ice as the league s new, on-campus postseason tournament begins next March are all among the top-15 nationally for wins since opening night of the season, with the Mavericks (76 victories) ranking fourth, the Bulldogs (67) tied for 10th, the Huskies (66) in 12th and the Falcons (63) placing 15th. Demonstrating the competitiveness that is a WCHA hallmark, all four programs received first-place votes in the media poll, while Bowling Green (8) and Michigan Tech (2) earned the coaches nods. Spots five through seven were also the same in both polls, with Northern Michigan, Bemidji State and Lake Superior State, respectively, expected to be vying for playoff positioning. Last season, the Wildcats posted their highest conference win total and finish (12 victories and fifth place) since the season, the Beavers won their most games (17) since , and the Lakers enjoyed a six-win improvement behind one of the nation s top-scoring freshmen classes. WCHA coaches picked Alaska Anchorage to grab the league s eighth and final playoff spot, ahead of Alabama Huntsville and Alaska. The media poll has the Nanooks finishing eighth and the Seawolves 10th, with the Chargers again ninth. Ferris State senior forward Gerald Mayhew was the coaches and media s choice as preseason Player of the Year. The Wyandotte, Mich. native ranked third in the league scoring race with 25 points (9g-16a) in WCHA play last year, while his 41 points overall (16g-25a) paced the conference. He ended his campaign by recording a point in five of six postseason contests (10 total), helping the Bulldogs to the NCAA West Regional final with five goals (including two gamewinners) and five assists. Minnesota State forward Parker Tuomie (coaches choice) and Ferris State defensemen Cameron Clarke (media pick) split the preseason Rookie of the Year votes. Tuomie, a native of Germany, finished 11th in the United States Hockey League (USHL) scoring race last season, scoring 54 points (30g-24a) for the Sioux Falls Stampede. Clarke was selected by the Boston Bruins in the fifth round (136th pick overall) of the 2016 National Hockey League (NHL) Draft. The Chargers open the weekend on Friday against Massachusetts at 4:05 p.m. CST, prior to wrapping up the Mariucci Classic on Saturday against Mercyhurst or Minnesota at a to-bedetermined time. Prior to being away from competition the past two weekends, UAH completed its third road series sweep of the season on Dec in its trip to Northern Michigan, coming away with a 4-1 win in the opener and a 3-1 victory in the finale. The Chargers are now in a two-way tie for fourth place in the league standings with 23 points on a league record, while holding a overall record. The Chargers are amidst their strongest season since joining the Western Collegiate Hockey Association prior to the season, as the squad has a program-record 23 points and seven league wins in the standings thus far. UAH s current four-game road win streak ties the program-record set in , and the Chargers hold a record in WCHA road contests so far this season. Huntsville native Josh Kestner moved back atop the UAH offense with 16 points from six goals and 10 assists in , after posting four points on two goals and two assists in the series sweep of NMU. Kestner whose 16 points are a career-high ranks tied for eighth in points (16) and tied for ninth in assists (10) within the WCHA. Junior Max McHugh has now scored in back-to-back series after netting his first goal in 10 games in the opener at NMU, which gives him 14 points from six goals and eight assists. McHugh enters the week tied for 16th in the WCHA in points (14), and leads the UAH roster with 59 career points from 25 goals and 34 assists. Brandon Parker has scored a goal in three consecutive games and in four of the last five contests, following a two-goal, one-assist performance in the sweep of the Wildcats. Parker now ranks third amongst UAH defensemen with nine points on five goals and four assists, while ranking tied for second in the WCHA with 45 blocks. Cam Knight now ranks tied for first amongst UAH defenseman with 13 points on three goals and tied for the team-high 10 assists after notching an assist in the finale at Northern Michigan. Knight has provided a consistent offensive spark over the past two months, owning three goals and nine assists since Oct. 29 at St. Cloud State. The Chargers' leading goal scorer heading into the 26th annual Mariucci Classic is two-time WCHA Defensive Player of the Week Kurt Gosselin, who has totaled seven goals and six assists for 13 points to rank tied for first for points among UAH defensemen. Gosselin s seven goals rank first amongst WCHA defensemen entering the week as well. Junior Jordan Uhelski made both starts between the pipes for the second straight series, coming away with just two goals allowed and 47 saves for a.959 save percentage on Dec at NMU. This season, Uhelski owns a record in goal and leads all UAH goalies with a 2.73 goals against average and a.908 save percentage. Seawolves University of Alaska Anchorage The Alaska Anchorage Seawolves return from the Holiday Break to host WCHA-leader Bemidji State, Dec at the Sullivan Arena in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association series. The Seawolves and Beavers meet for the 17th and 18th all-time games, which started in Overall, BSU leads the all-time series record, and in Anchorage. The only UAA win came Nov. 12, 2010 (5-4) on the road in the teams first-ever meeting, giving the Beavers a 15-game unbeaten streak and a six-game winning streak vs. the Seawolves. Earlier this season, BSU swept the Seawolves in Bemidji, 2-1 OT, 4-0 on Oct The Seawolves concluded the first half of the season following a WCHA series vs. in-state rival Alaska Fairbanks. The Seawolves split with the Nanooks; winning Dec. 9, 3-2, before losing, Dec. 10, 3-1, in Fairbanks in Game 1 & 2 of the Alaska Airlines Governor s Cup. UAA concluded the first half with a record overall and record in conference play. With the split in Fairbanks, the Seawolves are ninth in the WCHA with nine points, two points ahead of Northern Michigan and seven points behind a two-way tie for seventh. UAA is now in the last five games. In 18 games, UAA is averaging 1.56 goals per game, while allowing 3.22 goals per game. UAA is sitting at 83.8% on the penalty kill, stopping 88 of 105 power plays. Meanwhile, the Seawolves man-advantage unit is to 8-for-87 (8.2%). Individually, the Seawolves are led by junior captain Matt Anholt. Anholt has a team-high 11 points and seven helpers and a team-high-tying four goals. With a guaranteed 16 games left, Anholt has already bypassed his rookie season production and needs 12 points to top his sophomore season. Anholt is currently enjoying a four-game point streak (1-3 4). Junior F Tad Kozun is tied for second on the team with eight points. Kozun is tied with Anholt with a team-high four goals and has four assists. Kozun picked up UAA s third shorthanded goal of the season on Dec. 3, joining sophomores Mason Mitchell and Nils Rygaard with shorties. Kozun is also one of four UAA skaters that hasn t been tagged for a penalty this season. Kozun leads all current UAA skaters with 43 career points and 23 career goals. Also with eight points is sophomore F Jonah Renouf. Renouf contributed over the UAF weekend with two assists on Dec. 9 his second multi-point game of the season. Leading UAA from the blueline is junior D Jarrett Brown with six points. Brown s 29 career points rank 34th all-time on the UAA defenseman list. Senior D Chase Van Allen posted a goal on Dec. 9, giving the Anchorage local 39 career points good for a tie at No. 25 on the UAA defenseman record book. Both of Van Allen s goals this season have come on the power play and were the game winners. Dressing in 17 games for UAA is junior G Olivier Mantha. Mantha a twotime UAA MVP is , while sporting a.909 save percentage and a 2.93 goals-against average. Mantha s career save percentage of.908 still ranks No. 1 on the all-time UAA list, while his 2.90 gaa ranks No. 3. Mantha has played in 78 career games, good for sixth all-time in the UAA record book. On Nov. 12, Mantha posted a career-high 53 saves for the Seawolves. The Nooks (6-12-2, WCHA) are now in seventh place in the conference standings, trailing sixth-place Ferris State by a single point. UAF is four points out of fourth place. Senior forward Marcus Basara leads the Nooks in scoring, collecting seven goals and eight assists for 15 points on the season. Basara is currently riding a four-game point streak after recording goals in both games against BGSU. Basara also leads the team in goals and points per games played (0.75). Sophomore forward Chad Staley (6G, 7A) and junior defenseman Zach Frye (4G, 9A) are tied for second on the team with 13 points apiece. Frye is also tied for the team lead with nine assists, while leading the Nanooks with eight power-play goals. Senior forward Brandon Morley (1G, 9A) and freshman forward Troy Van Tetering (6G, 4A) are the only other Nooks who have surpassed double-digit scoring this season, with both at ten. Freshman forward Colton Leiter scored the game-winning goal on Dec. 16 against Bowling Green and leads the team with two game-winners this season. He is now on a four-game point streak, with two goals and two assists in the span. Van Tetering is one of three freshman who have appeared in all 20 games this season, while eight of the nine freshmen who have dressed in at least one game have posted at least one point. Sophomore goaltender Jesse Jenks currently leads the team in saves (387), goals against average (3.30), save percentage (.890) and win percentage (.393). The Nooks are when Jenks is in net and when he is not. As a team, the Nooks rank sixth in the conference in scoring, averaging 2.60 goals per game. The Nooks lead the conference in unassisted goals (7 - tied), goals in ties (8) and goals when trailing (25). Alaska is tied for third in the conference in power play goals for with 19. Alaska has scored at least one power play goal in 14 of their 20 games this season, behind held to zero power play goals in just six contests during the year. After taking a lead just seconds into Dec. 17 s contest, the Beavers saw the Bulldogs score once in the second and again late in the third to take the game, 2-1, and the series. This season BSU is in overtime games and has not lost an OT contest since Jan. 22, 2016 (2-0-5). BSU is also perfect when extending the game beyond 65 minutes, getting two 3-on-3 goals and a shootout win. Michael Bitzer allowed three goals in the series vs. UMD. He moves to on the season. He leads the country in wins (13), is second in goals against average (1.46), while he is tied for second in shutouts (3) and ranks third in save percentage (.940). Bitzer has played 1,270:24 of the Beavers 1,338:42 this year that is 94.9 percent of the team s season. Bitzer has played in all but one game this season and leads the country in minutes played. Following a season-high 35 saves Dec. 16 and 25 more Dec. 17, Bitzer moves within striking distance of the top 10 at BSU all-time. In his career he has 1,917 saves. He is on the heels of Mark Liska ( ) in 10th place (2,013). Marinaccio's career-high 17 points (7g-10a) leads the team. With an assist Dec. 16, sophomore Jay Dickman moves to double-digit points for the first time in his career, establishing career marks for goals (4) and assists (6) during the first half of the season. Brendan Harms has 10 points (3g-7a) in BSU s last 10 games. Kyle Bauman scored his seventh goal of the season Dec. 17, he is now tied with Marinaccio and Harms for the team s lead. Bauman has scored in five of the Beavers last six games (3g-2a), which includes a game-winning goal Dec. 2 at Michigan Tech. Tommy Muck s assist Dec. 17 marked the end of a 10-game scoring drought for the freshman defender. The BSU penalty-kill unit was 7-for-8 versus UMD to move to 77-of-85 (.906) overall. The BSU unit is third in the country. The Beavers were 1-for-9 on the power play versus UMD. BSU is now 19-for- 94 (.204) overall to rank 17th in the nation, while the team is 15-for-70 (.214) in league play to lead the WCHA. BSU has not allowed a power-play goal in league play since the first period of its Nov. 12 contest at Minnesota State a streak spanning 24 opponent opportunities and seven games. Harms leads the team with a career-high six PPG and has 10 points on the man advantage to pace the team. BSU continues to lead the country in goals allowed (1.59). The Beavers have allowed more than two goals just four times this season. All four have resulted in losses. In its last 10 games, BSU has been carried by its upperclassmen. Bowling Green returns Kevin Dufour, who scored with just 3:04 remaining in regulation to for an overtime in Blue Cross Arena. Assisting Dufour was Pierre-Luc Mercier and Matt Pohlkamp, who also return to the lineup for the faceoff against the Tigers. The BGSU hockey team has once again partnered with the ECHL's Toledo Walleye to feature the Falcons at Toledo's Huntington Center. This year, the Falcons will host the RIT on Dec. 30 at 5:07 p.m. in the first game of a doubleheader with the Walleye. BGSU last skated in the Huntington Center on Dec. 30, 2015 against Western Michigan, which resulted in a narrow 1-0 Broncos win. Prior to the event last season, the last time the Falcons played in the Huntington Center was during the season against Michigan. When he scored the first goal of the game to give the Falcons the early lead, freshman Jacob Dalton netted his first career goal in the 6-3 Bowling Green victory Dec. 17 at Alaska. Dalton also made it his first career multi-point night with the first assist on Mitch McLain s game-winning goal early in the third period. At Alaska Saturday night (Dec. 17), Bowling Green snapped a three-game losing streak by downing the Nanooks by a 6-3 mark. The Falcons also marked the most shots in a period since Oct. 29 when they tallied 18 in the opening period, leading to the most shots in a goal in a game since the 4-1 win at Miami with 39. Senior Matt Pohlkamp regained the Falcons lead Saturday night at Alaska with a goal scored with just 33 seconds remaining in the opening period. The even strength goal put the Falcons up 2-1, and marked Pohlkamp s first goal since Nov. 12 and his seventh of the season. Also marking a goal in the Saturday night win at Alaska was sophomore Connor McDonald, making it his first of the season and second of his career. McDonald s goal regained Bowling Green s lead by a 3-2 mark on the Falcons way to a 6-3 win. In the final goal of the night, Dufour was assisted by junior Tyler Spezia. Spezia had also assisted on McLain s game-winning goal, making it his fourth multi-point night of season. McLain was named WCHA Offensive Player of the Week for the third time in a four week time span after marking his first game-winning goal of the season in the 6-3 win at Alaska. It was McLain s team-leading 11th goal of the season putting him on a two-game point streak. The Baxter, Minn. native has earned points in 14 of the Falcons 22 games and is fourth in the WCHA with 1.05 points per game, and second overall in the conference with 0.52 goals per game average. Matt Pohlkamp played in his 142nd career game Dec. 17 against the University of Alaska Fairbanks. As the active career leader for the Bowling Green squad, Pohlkamp leads six current Falcons who have 100+ games of collegiate experience, including Sean Walker (141), Mercier (139), Dufour (135) and Mark Friedman (102). The most recent addition to the century men is McLain, who clocked ice time in his 101st game Saturday night at the Carlson Center. Fellow junior Spezia tallies 93 career games played, on track to be the next Falcon to hit the century marker. Bulldogs Ferris State University Ferris State Hockey will visit Pittsburgh for the first time in program history as they catch up with esteemed alum and current Pittsburgh Penguin Chris Kunitz. Kunitz, a three-time Stanley Cup Champion and two-time Olympic Gold Medalist headlined for the Bulldogs from In his four years in Big Rapids, he racked up 175 career points to finish sixth all-time in program history. In 2003, Kunitz led the Bulldogs to a 31-win season with 79 points (including 35 goals) to capture the CCHA Championship and punch Ferris State s first ever NCAA Tournament Ticket. Kunitz remains the last player in program history to register more than 30 goals, more than 40 assists and more than 70 points in a season. Kunitz finished second in the Hobey Baker voting to Colorado College s Peter Sejna that season. Ferris State s 3-0 victory Dec. 9 over nationally 16th ranked Minnesota State saw a number of highlight moments for the program. Sophomore goaltender Darren Smith continued on his bounce-back performances with a sparkling 36-save shutout to backstop the Bulldogs to victory. It was Ferris State s first shutout over Minnesota State since the two joined the WCHA. Also for Ferris State, it was the second shutout in their last three home games. Senior forward Gerald Mayhew registered his 99th and 100th collegiate points in the second period of the Friday night game. Mayhew became the First Bulldog since Greg Rallo on Feb. 11, 2006 to reach 100 collegiate points. Smith has put together three solid starts in a row following a slow start. Since his start against Alabama Huntsville on Sunday, Dec. 4, Smith has compiled a record with a.956 save percentage (fourth nationally in that span). Smith last year backstopped the Bulldogs to a WCHA Broadmoor Championship as a freshman, and helped upset the nation s no. 2 overall seed, St. Cloud State, in the NCAA tournament. Ferris State owns a all-time record against the Robert Morris Colonials in four prior games. Ferris State last saw Robert Morris at the beginning of the season when the Bulldogs swept the Colonials. Ferris State has never met Robert Morris on neutral ice, but went on Oct , 2008 on the road. The Bulldogs have seen the Boston College Eagles three times in program history and have an record, including the 2012 National Championship game against the Eagles. The Bulldogs tied the Eagles back on Dec. 30, 2005 at Magness Arena in Denver, Col. in a 3-3 game. The Bulldogs lost their first meeting on Dec. 28, to the Eagles. Ferris State and Quinnipiac have not met as Division I opponents. Freshman defenseman Joe Rutkowski took over the defenseman pointscoring lead for Ferris State with his second goal of the season coming on Saturday (Dec. 10). Rutkowski is now tied for fourth on the team in total point scoring and leads all freshmen. Rutkowski now has points in 10 of his last 11 games as he settles in at Ferris State. The Crystal Lake, Ill. native is fourth in the WCHA in freshman scoring behind fellow teammate Craig Pefley, and second in the WCHA in freshman defensemen scoring behind Alec Rauhauser of Bowling Green. Rutkowski is fifth in the nation in freshman defenseman scoring as well on the strength of two goals and 10 assists for 12 points. Generally known for penalty kill prowess, this installment of Ferris State hockey hits the halfway point of the season tied with Michigan Tech for the most power play goals in the WCHA with 20. Ferris State has netted a power play goal in all but three games this season and is riding a six-game streak of power play goals. After capping 2016 in Omaha, the Lakers return to league play with consecutive weekends of home-and-home action against Upper Peninsula rivals Northern Michigan Jan. 6-7 and Jan Last time out, the Lakers skated to a 1-1 tie at Bemidji State (Dec. 9-10) before falling to the Beavers in a shootout to decide the extra league point. n the series finale with the Beavers, the Lakers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, 23 seconds into the game before the Beavers scored three unanswered goals in picking up a 3-2 victory. The Mavericks, former Central Collegiate Hockey Association rivals with LSSU, and the Lakers have met 28 times in the all-time series, all as CCHA opponents. The Mavericks hold a advantage overall. Sophomore forward Mitch Hults leads the Lakers and ranks second among WCHA players in scoring with six goals and 15 assists for 21 points in 18 games this season. He is followed by linemate Gage Torrel with Diego Cuglietta ( ), J.T. Henke ( ), and Owen Headrick ( ) are tied for third among the Lakers lineup in scoring. Torrel and Cuglietta currently sit tied with Minnesota State s Brad McClure for fourth in total goals scored among WCHA players with eight Following a start to the season and averaging 5.0 goals per game, the Lakers have since been held to two or fewer goals in eight of their last 13 games. In their last 11 games the Lakers are and average 2.0 goals per game. Still, the Lakers lead the WCHA with a 3.17 goals per game mark. On the power play the Lakers are connecting on just 13.0 percent of their opportunities and have allowed a league-high five shorthanded goals, tying three other teams in shorthanded goals allowed. The penalty kill has been successful 83.8 percent of the time, ranking fifth in the WCHA. The Lakers have also scored a WCHA s best five shorthanded goals this season. With a combined 31 goals and 53 assists for 84 total points, the Lakers sophomore class leads all other classes in combined goals, assists and points this season. After registering his third-straight weekend tallying eight or more blocked shots on the weekend at Bemidji State, freshman defenseman Collin Saccoman continues to lead the nation with 53 blocked shots. Saccoman s 2.94 blocked shots per game is also a national best. Junior defenseman Aidan Wright leads the WCHA in plus-minus rating (+12) and ranks tied for eighth nationally among defensemen. The Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., native also ranks tenth in the WCHA with 37 blocked shots. Wright s defensive partner, Kyle Chatham (1-6--7), is tied for second among WCHA players with a +10 rating and has 31 blocked shots on the season. Headrick is tied for third in overall defenseman scoring with 14 points on the season. His 12 assists are tied for the most by a WCHA defenseman. Huskies Michigan Technological University The Huskies host the 52nd annual Great Lakes Invitational the final at Joe Louis Arena on December Tech opens up against Michigan for their third meeting of the season. The puck drops at 3:30 p.m. Michigan State and Western Michigan faceoff in the second semifinal at 7 p.m. Tech is overall and in the WCHA. The Huskies have won four of their last five games and are unbeaten in 10-of-11. Tech has 10 GLI titles and is all-time. Tech last won the GLI in 2012 with a 4-0 win over Western Michigan, while the Huskies have played in the GLI Championship in three of the last four years. Tech has finished second 14 times, third 11 times, and fourth 16 times Mel Pearson is as a head coach at the GLI. Pearson scored the gamewinning goal in the third overtime of the 1979 GLI Championship game. The Huskies defeated Michigan 5-4. Tech is all-time vs. Michigan, dating back to The Huskies are in neutral site games. The teams met earlier this year at Yost Ice Arena, with Michigan winning 4-3 in overtime Oct. 21 before the teams skated to a 3-3 tie the next night. Seven Huskies have double-digit points this season. Jake Lucchini (7-5), Joel L'Esperance (6-6), and Matt Roy (2-10) lead the team with 12 points. He is also fourth in save percentage (.937), and fifth in winning percentage (.821) with his record. Cliff Watson is fifth in the country with 43 blocked shots. Hanna ranks 14th with 39 blocks. Tech's 22 overall games and 15 road games lead the country. The Huskies have played 15 of their first 22 games on the road. Tech is on the road and in conference road games. Tech is at home this season all in WCHA contests Tech is sixth in the nation in scoring defense, giving up 2.14 goals per game. The Huskies have surrendered only one goal in 10 of the last 14 games. The Huskies have outshot their opponents in 12 straight games. Tech was outshot in its first four games this season but have outshot teams in 17 of the last 18 games. The Huskies are when outshooting the opponent. Hanna's 140 games played are the most among all NCAA Division I players. He has never missed a game in his career. Michigan Tech All-American Tanner Kero was called up to the NHL's Chicago Blackhawks on December 22 after leading the Rockford IceHogs with seven goals and 20 points this season. He notched two-point games in two of the IceHogs' last three contests to help lead the team to a three-game winning streak. He had one goal and two assists in 17 games with the Blackhawks last season. The Mannheim, Germany native leads the WCHA in scoring, ranks ninth in the country in scoring and is tied for second amongst all freshmen skaters in the nation in scoring. Michaelis, who has accrued at least one point in 15 of 20 games played in his debut season with the Mavericks, enters the New Year riding a three-game pointscoring streak (1-4--5). Junior forward Brad McClure, who racked up in the last eight games prior to the Holiday break, leads Minnesota State with 77 shots on goal. The Stratford, Ont., native ranks second on the Mavericks in points with on the season. Junior forward C.J. Franklin, who leads the Mavericks with three gamewinning goals, ranks fifth in the nation with six power play markers. He leads the Minnesota State with 196 face-off wins this year and with in 98 career games, the Forest Lake, Minn., product stands as Minnesota State s active career scoring leader. Sophomore defenseman Dan Brickley scored his fourth goal of the season in Minnesota State s 5-4 win at Princeton Dec. 17 and stands fourth on Minnesota State s scoring charts with in 12 games this year. He leads all WCHA defensemen in scoring despite missing a month of playing time due to an upper body injury. Senior forward Michael Huntebrinker scored his third goal of the season in Minnesota State s 5-4 win at Princeton Dec. 17. The goal is the first career game-winning tally for the Chesterfield, Mo., native and gives him in 105 career games with the Mavericks. Freshman defenseman Ian Scheid has in the last nine games. He has on the year to rank second amongst all WCHA first-year blueliners. Sophomore forward Max Coatta, who has in 56 career games, assisted on Nick Rivera s goal in the Mavericks' 5-4 win at Princeton Dec. 17. Senior forward Jordan Nelson ranks second on the Mavericks with 166 faceoff wins and leads the team in face-off percentage (.564). The Williston, N.D., native has 15 goals and 18 assists for 33 points in 120 career games played. Freshman forward Parker Tuomie has in 20 games in his debut season with the Mavericks and ranks fourth on the team with 55 shots on goal. Junior defenseman Clint Lewis, who stands tied for second on the Mavericks in plus/minus with a +8 on the year, has 21 blocked shots and 18 shots on goal in Minnesota s freshmen have racked up in 20 contests so far this season to stand fourth in scoring in the nation as a group. Minnesota State has outshot its opponents in 14 out of 20 games this year and rank eighth in the nation in shots on goal margin at Minnesota State is in its 48th year of college hockey and owns an all-time record of (.567). The Mavericks are in their 18th year of membership in the WCHA and stand (.505) all-time in regularseason games vs. WCHA opponents. Wildcats Northern Michigan University The Wildcats will travel to Estero, Fla. for the Florida College Hockey Classic on Dec They are set to face the ECAC's Cornell in their tournament opener and will take on either the Hockey East's Merrimack or the NCHC's Colorado College in their second game. Northern Michigan last faced the Big Red in 2001 and the Tigers in The Wildcats have never taken on the Warriors. Northern Michigan last attended this tournament, then called the Everblades College Classic, in The Wildcats won the title after edging Cornell, 4-3, in double overtime and dispatching Maine, 5-4. Goaltender Craig Kowalski was named the tournament's MVP. Now in its 41st season, Northern Michigan has participated in 20 holiday tournaments in late December and early January. The Wildcats' first holiday tournament was the 1982 Jeno's Holiday Classic in Duluth, Minn., and their most recent was the 2015 Great Lakes Invitational in Detroit, Mich. In holiday tournament action, Northern Michigan owns a record. The Wildcats won titles at the 1985 Phoenix Mutual Hockey Classic (Hartford, Conn.), the 1991 Nissan/Jeep Classic (Anchorage, Alaska), the 1996 Saskatchewan Chillout (Saskatoon, Sask.), the 2001 Everblades College Classic (Estero, Fla.) and the 2010 Dodge Holiday Classic (Minneapolis, Minn.). Through 20 games, Northern Michigan's top three point producers are Robbie Payne (5g-9), Gerard Hanson (3g-7a) and Zach Diamantoni (1g-9a). Two freshmen, Darien Craighead (4g-5a) and Philip Beaulieu (2g-7a), are tied with leading goal scorer Dominik Shine (6g-3a) for fourth on the team in points. Beaulieu and Craighead remained in the WCHA rookie scoring race's top 10 despite being held off the score sheet during the Alabama-Huntsville series. The duo is in a six-way tie for ninth in points. Beaulieu is also tied for sixth in helpers while Craighead is tied for eighth in goals. With seven blocked shots during the Alabama Huntsville series, Rylan Yaremko's season total moved to 41, placing him in a tie for fifth in the WCHA. He ranks second among WCHA freshmen and is one of only three in the top 15 overall. Nationally, he is tied for third among newcomers and tied for ninth overall. Northern Michigan's penalty kill has made strides since Nov. 25. In their past six games, the Wildcats own a penalty kill percentage of.879. They held Omaha (0-4, Nov. 26), Alaska-Anchorage (0-7, Dec. 3) and Alabama- Huntsville (0-6, Dec. 9) scoreless on the man advantage during that stretch. Before that, they had held their opponent scoreless on the power play only two times in their first 15 games. Northern Michigan has struggled on the man advantage in , scoring just eight power-play goals in 20 games. The Wildcats'.083 power play percentage ranks second to last in the WCHA and third to last in the country. Head coach Walt Kyle announced on Dec. 19 that Demico Hannoun and Brett Heikkila will join the Wildcats for the second half of the campaign. Hannoun played for three teams over the course of five BCHL seasons, totaling 177 points (78g-99a) in 228 regular-season games. Heikkila spent the past three seasons with the Minnesota Wilderness (NAHL), posting 56 points (30g-26a) in 147 regular-season games. Former Northern Michigan goaltender Jared Coreau ( ) earned his first National Hockey League victory on Dec. 23. Coreau, who was making his second career NHL start, stopped 31 shots to help the Detroit Red Wings down the Florida Panthers, 4-3, in a shootout.
