12 WCHA Team Notebooks Chargers University of Alabama in Huntsville The Chargers (1-15-0, WCHA) earned a WCHA series split last weekend at Bowling Green, winning in dramatic fashion on Saturday (Dec. 7) with a game-winning goal in overtime with :03.4 seconds remaining. UAH fell 3-0 on Friday before earning a hard-fought 4-3 win on Saturday. Defenseman Frank Misuraca scored his first goal of the season, the most important goal for UAH so far this season, in overtime of last Saturday s game with just :03.4 seconds left. Misuraca was assisted on the goal by Matt Salhany, who dropped a perfect puck in front of the blue line. Forward Matt Salhany played his best game of the season last Saturday, scoring an unassisted shorthanded goal and assisting on two others, including the game-winner. The freshman now leads UAH in points with six on the season. Scoring their first goals of the season on Saturday (Dec. 7) were forwards Jack Prince and Cody Marooney. It marks a career first for both players, scoring their first-ever goals in an NCAA game. The four goals scored by the Chargers in the win at Bowling Green last Saturday are the most since 2011, when they scored four goals against Bemidji State. Mike Corbett got the monkey off his back and picked up his first-ever head coaching victory on Saturday in an exciting 4-3 overtime WCHA road victory over the Falcons. Freshman goaltender Carmine Guerriero earned a career first, as the he notched his first-ever victory in overtime fashion. Guerriero saved a career-high 41 shots against Bowling Green, including crucial saves in overtime. The 3-0 shutout defeat at Bowling Green last Friday marked the seventh time this season the Chargers have not scored a goal. Alabama Huntsville will now host Minnesota State this upcoming weekend for another challenging WCHA series. The Chargers will host the Mavericks before having a weekend off, followed by a visit to Wisconsin for a non-conference series. This weekend s series between UAH and Minnesota State will be the 44th and 45th meeting all-time between the two schools. The teams have played to an even all-time record against one another. In last year s non-conference meeting, Minnesota State won 4-1 on Oct. 12 before a 2-2 (ot) tie on Oct. 13. The 4-3 victory over Bowling Green on Dec. 7 is also the program s first-ever WCHA win. The team earned its first two points in WCHA play, in what hopes to be the first of many. After a solid weekend offensively, 14 players have recorded two or more points this season. Of those 14, seven are freshman. Seawolves University of Alaska Anchorage The Alaska Anchorage Seawolves will host Lake Superior State, Dec at the Sullivan Arena. The games are scheduled to commence at 7:07 pm AST both evenings. This will be the fifth and sixth all-time meetings between the teams. LSSU enters the weekend leading the all-times series, The last meeting between the teams was March 27, 1992 with LSSU winning 7-3 in the NCAA First Round. The teams also met in the NCAA First Round on March 16-17, 1990 with LSSU sweeping, 6-2, The only other meeting occurred, Nov. 29, 1986 LSSU won, 5-3. Before seeing the Lakers, the Seawolves split a WCHA series with in-state rival Alaska Fairbanks, 3-2, 4-5 on Dec. 6-7 at the Sullivan Arena. UAA is now at home, the best home record for UAA since joining Div. 1. The previous best home record as a Div. 1 member was 6-2-0, registered in With the win last Friday, the Seawolves broke a three-game losing streak to the Nanooks. UAA collected the win with a season-low 13 shots on goal. Also on Friday, the Seawolves went 1-for-2 on the power-play, their first PPG since Nov. 23 vs. Michigan Tech. Last Saturday, the Seawolves went 2-for-8 on the power-play. In WCHA overall stats, UAA leads the league with 19-for-84 on the power-play (22.6%), while UAA is second in league only games on the power-play, going 15-for-59 (25.4%). The Alabama Huntsville sweep on Nov. 8-9 gave UAA its first WCHA points, while UAA s six wins already surpassed the win total from a year ago (4). The Seawolves hadn t started at home since the season when they swept Kent, RIT and U.S. International for a start at home. The last time UAA posted five straight wins at home was in , sweeping Air Force, Denver and Wisconsin. UAA failed to score first at either game at MSU on Dec. 6-7, but is when doing so. On Nov. 9, the Seawolves registered a season-high six goals, including a season-high five power-play goals just one shy of the school record. The four PPGs in the third period broke the school record the Seawolves managed three in a period vs N. Arizona in 1984 and Notre Dame in UAA is now in WCHA openers since joining the league in , compared to the program s in season openers since The only UAA wins in WCHA openers came in and UAA started the season with a record its best since when the Seawolves started The Seawolves are in the last eight Kendall Classic games and produced the program s first start since the season. The victory over Air Force (Oct. 12) gave UAA their own tournament title for the eighth time in 23 tries and marked their first-ever Kendall three-peat. Individually, the Seawolves are led by junior F Scott Allen with 16 points and a team-high 10 goals. In WCHA overall stats, Allen is fifth in points (10) and tied for third for goals. Leading UAA in helpers are senior F Jordan Kwas and sophomore F Blake Tatchell with nine apiece, good for a tie at No. 12 in the WCHA overall stats. Kwas and Allen are tied for No. 1 in power-play points (9). Senior F Matt Bailey, who has 14 points this season, is tied for No. 1 in the nation for game-winning goals (4).

BSU was 1-for-7 on the man-advantage at MTU, bringing it to 14-of-72 (.194) on the season, and are 10-for-48 (.208) to rank fourth in the league standings. The Beavers are 3-for-13 in their last two games (.230). BSU has averaged more than a goal more on Friday (31) than it has in Saturday (21) games. That works out to an average of 3.44 per Friday contest and 2.33 goals per game Saturday. This season slow first period starts have been an issue for the Beavers. BSU has scored 12 first period goals to its opponents 19, while it has been out scored 11-7 in the first period of WCHA play. When BSU leads after one period it is unbeaten at 2-0-1, while it is when trailing after the first period. Cory Ward (8g-1a) and Markus Gerbrandt (7g-2a) currently lead BSU in WCHA scoring while ranking 11th with nine league points. The duo also ranks two and three in WCHA goal scored this season. At just 10.3 penalty minutes per game, BSU is the least penalized team in the WCHA. The Beavers welcome Alaska to Sanford Center for the first meeting between the teams as WCHA foes. BSU is vs the Nanooks all-time. The three previous meetings have taken place in Bemidji. BSU hosted UAF March 10-11, 1984 with the NCAA Div II National title on the line.
